[edit]Achmad Rizal Purnama began his career at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Indonesia in 2002. His initial assignment was as a Public Diplomacy Officer, where he served from 2004 to 2006.[2]
Permanent Mission to the United Nations
[edit]Between 2007 and 2010, Purnama served as Third Secretary for Economic Development and Environmental Issues at Indonesia’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York. During this time, he proposed the "Troika+1" framework, which included Indonesia, Poland, Denmark, and the UN Secretary-General,[2] to sustain Indonesia’s leadership in climate change negotiations following the adoption of the Bali Roadmap in 2007.[4][5] He was also trusted as the Group Coordinator for the G77 and China, particularly focusing on defending developing countries' interests in agriculture.[2]

In this role, he accompanied the Minister during official bilateral, regional, and multilateral engagements, contributing significantly to Indonesia’s Chairmanship of ASEAN in 2011 and APEC in 2013. He was instrumental in facilitating ASEAN’s response to the Thailand-Cambodia border conflict through the Informal ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting held in Jakarta in February 2011.[6] Additionally, he contributed to the adoption of ASEAN’s Six-Point Principles on the South China Sea.

He played a pivotal role in lifting the U.S. military embargo on Indonesia’s Special Army Forces (Kopassus), which was officially announced by then-U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry in 2014.[7] Purnama also facilitated President Joko Widodo’s official visit to Washington, D.C., in 2015, which resulted in the elevation of U.S.-Indonesia relations to a Strategic Partnership and the signing of key agreements in defense and maritime cooperation.[8][9]
Director for Middle East Affairs
[edit]In 2019, Purnama was appointed Director for Middle East Affairs, overseeing Indonesia’s diplomatic relations with countries in the Middle East and North Africa. He held this position until July 2020.[2]
