- Comment: This article is about a proposed strike in almost four years' time. I think this fails WP:NOTCRYSTAL Mgp28 (talk) 11:32, 3 August 2024 (UTC)
The 2028 American General Strike is a proposed general strike put forward by the United Auto Workers (UAW) to start on International Workers' Day, May 1, 2028.[1] The UAW organized for their contracts with the Big Three, General Motors, Ford and Stellantis (historically Chrysler), to simultaneously end on May 1 2028, going on strike from there, and has urged other unions to do the same.[2] They have also added that they wish to expand the strike beyond the Big Three, to other large automobile manufacturers.[2]
In a speech he gave at the UAW national political conference, UAW president Shawn Fain stated that "We have to pay for our sins of the past. Back in 1980 when Reagan at the time fired PATCO workers, everybody in this country should have stood up and walked the hell out. We missed the opportunity then, but we’re not going to miss it in 2028. That’s the plan. We want a general strike. We want everybody walking out".[1] Fain went on to explain that the type of strike he wants would be similar to that of general strikes outside the United States, as he put it, "just like they have in other countries".[1] This is in reference to the fact that general strikes are very uncommon in the United States compared to other countries, particularly countries in Europe that have a much longer history of labor organizing.[2][3]
Participants
[edit]No other major union has publicly announced participation in the general strike.[2]
