On November 8, 2024, Hannah Kobayashi went missing after leaving Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). She arrived at LAX on November 8 as a layover on a trip from Maui, Hawaii to New York. For unknown reasons, she did not board her connecting flight and left the airport.
The next day, Kobayashi was spotted at a Taschen bookstore at The Grove shopping center in Los Angeles, her sister said, and it is unclear why she was there. Kobayashi then sent a Venmo payment to two people whose names her family did not recognize.[1]
On Sunday, November 10, a video was posted on YouTube showing Kobayashi at the LeBron XXII Trial Experience, an event held at the Nike store in the same shopping center. A photo of the event was also posted on her Instagram account, her sister said.[1]
On November 11 – the last day anyone heard from Kobayashi – her mother texted her, asking whether she made it to New York. Kobayashi responded in the negative. Kobayashi’s sister told the media that her sister’s friend has reached out to the family about “strange” text messages Kobayashi reportedly sent. Kobayashi allegedly texted her friend about her ID being stolen and expressed concern that someone "she thought she loved" was trying to take her money.[2]
On November 11, she was seen in surveillance footage with an unknown individual at a downtown Los Angeles Metro train station.[3][4]
On November 24, 2024, Hannah's father, Ryan Kobayashi, who had traveled to Los Angeles to assist in the search for his daughter, was found dead in a parking lot near LAX. He is believed to have committed suicide.[2][5][6]
The Kobayashi family said in a statement released through a nonprofit group helping with the search: "After tirelessly searching throughout Los Angeles for 13 days, Hannah’s father, Ryan Kobayashi, tragically took his own life. This loss has compounded the family’s suffering immeasurably."[1]
