Crusoe the Dachshund is a fifteen-year-old, miniature black and tan dachshund living in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada[1] who gained internet fame for his homemade costumes and viral videos.[2][3] He plays characters including chef, superhero, captain, fisherman, golfer, hockey player, jazz man, and accountant.[4][5][6]
He is often joined by his brother, Oakley. Oakley is owned by Ryan's parents. Two female long haired dachshunds joined the families--Daphne with Crusoe's and Delilah with Oakley's. The four have appeared in latest videos.
Life
[edit]Crusoe began appearing on social media with the self-appointed title of “celebrity” as a sarcastic moniker. After starting on social media in 2011, Crusoe has gained over 4 million followers.
Crusoe published "Crusoe the Celebrity Dachshund: Adventures of the Wiener Dog Extraordinaire", a New York Times Bestselling book.[7][8] In 2018, he published his second book, "Crusoe, the Worldly Wiener Dog: Further Adventures with the Celebrity Dachshund".[9]
Crusoe won Best Animal category at the Shorty Awards[10] and the 2018 People’s Choice Award for Animal Star,[11] leading to him being branded an “internet celebrity”.[1][2][12][13]
Crusoe underwent emergency surgery in August 2016 for a ruptured disc in his spinal cord, a condition called IVDD, or Intervertebral Disc Disease, a common condition for Dachshunds.[14][15] His recovery was successful he was declared healthy.
In 2024 Crusoe has battled a toe infection resulting in amputation of the toe. Liver issues appeared earlier, but seen to be under control.
Cornell veterinary takes care of Crusoe. Crusoe sponsored fundraisers to thank Cornell have raised raised hundreds of thousands. The money goes directly to Cornell for research on IVDD. "Crusoe Strong" .
Social media
[edit]Crusoe has over 3 million Facebook Likes and over a billion total video views, 700,000 Instagram followers, and over 1,000,000 subscribers to his YouTube Channel with over 150 million channel views.[16] Crusoe was present on Vine with over 10 billion loops. As of 2020[update], his TikTok profile has over 10 million views.

[edit]Crusoe has appeared on such media outlets as Good Morning America,[17] Mashable,[4][6] New York Mag,[12] Buzzfeed,[5] NHL.com,[2] and ESPN. His travels have been covered by Metro,[9] Lonely Planet,[18] and HuffPost.[15] Crusoe also attended the 2018 People’s Choice Awards in Los Angeles.[11]
An online advertisement for GoPro and a television commercial for the Recreational Boating & Fishing Foundation both featured clips of Crusoe fishing.[19][20] Crusoe was also the face of the Heinz Wiener Stampede Super Bowl ad campaign in 2016.[21]
