Adding opera companies category to musical groups category makes no sense
[edit]Given the notation at the top of that category's page, Category:Opera companies, does not belong there.

I must say that I don't see your argument. The text at the top of the Category:Musical groups page to which I presume you are refering states "This category contains musical ensembles. For individual musicians, see Category:Musicians." Primarily this text is intended indicate that individual musicians do not belong in the musical groups category. If that's the source of your objection, then this text could be refined. However, I don't believe that it needs to be changed as if you take a look at the musical ensemble page you will see that the term "musical ensemble" covers opera.
I would ask that you consider the following:
- Opera is form of musical expression.
- An opera company is a group of people.
- Therefore an opera company is a musical group (ie a group of people who come together for the purpose of making music).
Additionally:
- The musical groups category is broad (everything from Category:Orchestras to Category:Marching bands).
- It is a good idea for a category to have at least two parent categories (see Wikipedia:Categorization#How_to_create_subcategories). Currently this category only has one parent.

At 03:09, 16 December 2006 (UTC) Vivaverdi placed the following text on Category talk:Musical groups:
- "THIS SAYS IT ALL: "This category requires continual maintenance to avoid becoming too large. Please diffuse articles into relevant subcategories as needed: discuss large-scale changes on the talk page first. If an article exists in both this category and a relevant subcategory, or it simply does not belong, remove its category marker"."
I'm guessing that Vivaverdi wrote the above in response to a note I left on his/her talk page requesting a comment on my remarks here dated 15 December 2006. I have copied Vivaverdi's remarks here so that the thread of discussion can be seen.
The catdiffuse text indicates that articles need to be diffused into subcategories; not that there are too many subcategories. For the reasons I've outlined above, I'm making this cat a subcat the musical groups category. I request that anyone who wants to revert my edit address the points I've made above.
