Category:Hereditary peers elected to the House of Commons

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This category lists those hereditary peers who have sat in the British House of Commons while holding a substantive title (as opposed to a courtesy title, or being made a hereditary peer at a later date), a state of affairs which became possible following the House of Lords Act 1999. It also includes holders of hereditary titles in the Peerage of Ireland who were elected to the English or British House of Commons prior to the Acts of Union 1800, or who were elected to the British House of Commons following the Acts of Union and were not elected to the House of Lords as representative peers.

It is not to be confused with Category:Hereditary peers elected under the House of Lords Act 1999, which lists people elected to one of the remaining 93 seats for hereditary peers in the House of Lords reserved by the House of Lords Act, Category:Scottish representative peers, which lists people elected to one of the 16 seats for Scottish peers in the House of Lords which existed from 1707 to 1963, Category:Irish representative peers, which lists people elected to one of the 28 seats for Irish peers in the House of Lords which existed from 1801 to 1922, or with people holding courtesy titles (who may or may not have ultimately succeeded to hereditary peerages) who have been elected to the House of Commons, which, by contrast, is a practice that dates to the earliest days of the English Parliament.
