Cart Narcs is an American group from Burbank, California, formed by Sebastian Davis, also known as "Agent Sebastian".[2][3]
The group is known for its videos where they confront retail customers who leave their shopping carts in parking lots.[3][4] They do this through what are purported to be humorous or lighthearted interactions, aiming to promote good etiquette and habits. During an appearance on an episode of Dr. Phil, Davis stated that the group's mission is to ensure public decency.[5]
A popular catchphrase with the group is "lazybones," a name given to those who refuse to take their carts back. Occasionally, the Cart Narcs might also call out those who litter.
Although "Cart Narcs" is based in California, they have conducted "investigations" in New Jersey,[3] New York, Texas, Hawaii, Oregon, and Pennsylvania.[6]
Criticism
[edit]The Cart Narcs have received criticism, with some referring to their actions as "harassing," and stating that the group is not trying to protect public decency, but instead purposely provoke, then publicly shame people for the purpose of entertainment at their expense.[7]
Safety concerns
[edit]Sebastian Davis has discussed retaliation against their activities, including the pointing of guns, throwing drinks, chasing them, and hurling the magnets they leave back at them.[3] To mitigate the risk of harm, Davis says he and all other Cart Narc agents wear bulletproof vests,[citation needed] receive training in Krav Maga, will leave the property when asked by an employee, and will flee when considered prudent.
