Brian Mushana Kwesiga is a Ugandan-born engineer, author, and civic leader.[2][3] He is the former President and CEO of the Ugandan North American Association (UNAA)[4][5] and previously served as the General Manager of the Uganda men's national lacrosse team.[6][7][8]

Early life and education

[edit]

Kwesiga was born in 1987 at Nyakibale Hospital in Rujumbura County, Rukungiri District, Southwestern Uganda. He completed his O-level education at Kibuli Secondary School, Kampala before moving to the United States at the age of 15. He lost both parents when he was young.[9]

Kwesiga attended Rukungiri Kindergarten and Primary School in Rukungiri, Boma Primary School in Mbarara, and later completed his Primary Leaving Examination (PLE) at St. Peters Primary School, Nsambya, in Kampala, in 1998.[10]

After relocating to the U.S., he earned an Associate of Science in Mathematics from the Brookhaven Campus of what is now Dallas College in May 2005, where he was later named a Distinguished Alumni Award recipient in 2020.

He transferred to Southern Methodist University (SMU), receiving both a B.S. degree in electrical engineering from SMU's Lyle School of Engineering and from SMU's Dedman College of Humanities and Sciences, a B.A. degree in international studies in May 2009.[11] Kwesiga further earned a M.S. in systems engineering from SMU's Lyle School of Engineering in December 2018.[12][13]

At SMU, Kwesiga participated in a cross-cultural engineering study abroad program in Brazil aimed at promoting global security through manufacturing.

As of 2024, Kwesiga is pursuing a Master's in Global Business Administration at Tufts University's Fletcher School of Law & Diplomacy, with a study-abroad stint in Athens, Greece.[12]

Career

[edit]

Kwesiga has worked with companies such as Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, and Raytheon Technologies. His contributions include work on the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter and collaborations with Korea Aerospace Industries on the T/FA-50 combat aircraft.[14]

He is a fellow in the Africa Policy Accelerator program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) in Washington, D.C..[15][16]

Leadership and community engagement

[edit]

In 2009, while at Southern Methodist University, Kwesiga founded the Dallas Cranes F.C., a Ugandan soccer team that competed in the African Unity Cup Soccer Tournament. His efforts earned him the 2009 Outstanding Student Leadership Award from the DFW International Community Alliance.[17]

In September 2013, at age 26, Kwesiga was elected as the youngest President and CEO of the Ugandan North American Association where he successfully lobbied for reductions in visa and dual citizenship fees for Ugandans abroad through direct engagement with President Yoweri Museveni.[18]

In May 2023, the Uganda Lacrosse Association appointed Kwesiga as the General Manager of the Uganda men's national lacrosse team, making him the first native Ugandan to hold the position.[19][20] Under his leadership, the team represented Uganda at the World Lacrosse Championship held in San Diego, California, in 2023, the only African country to participate.[21]
