Brendan Patrick Murray[1] (born August 13, 1995),[2][3] known professionally as BigHead or BigHead on the Beat, is an American record producer, songwriter and DJ. He is best known for his work in the SoundCloud rap genre. He has produced music for, and performed with, artists such as Lil Pump, Lil Tracy, Famous Dex, YoungBoy Never Broke Again and Lil Peep.[4]
He was named in XXL's list of the 30 best hip hop producers of 2017, adding "You can't listen to this year's rising rap stars without hearing music from BigHead".[5] He is also noted for his producer tag, "Oouu, Bi-BigHead on the beat!".
Early life
[edit]Brenden Patrick Murray was born on August 13, 1995, in Palmdale, California. He began his music production career at the age of 17, using the popular digital audio workstation FruityLoops (FL Studio). He drew inspiration from artists like Wiz Khalifa, who also utilized the program in their work. Bighead prefers creating beats in the presence of rappers, often crafting them on the spot. He views this approach as ideal, stating, "It doesn’t add any pressure to me. If they don’t like the beats, that’s fine—I’ll come back another time." He also noted that working live prevents him from overcomplicating his beats, a tendency he experiences when producing alone. He became a full-time record producer at the age of 18 after his father moved to Arkansas.[4] He grew up in Palmdale and Lancaster.[4]
Career
[edit]He was one of the first to musically establish the emo hip-hop genre, producing numerous beats for Lil Peep and becoming one of the earliest producers in this style. He initially made beats in the style of Meek Mill and Drake before in 2017 beginning to compose in his own way, "probably 'cause I was high".[4] He first made the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100 with Lil Pump's "Gucci Gang" that year.[4] He produced six tracks on Pump's self-titled album that year.[5] One of those songs, "Molly", was co-produced with Ronny J.[2] He has worked with Gucci Mane, Chief Keef, Lil Pump, Lil Tracy, Lil Peep, SmokePurpp, Famous Dex, Soulja Boy and many others.
Artistry
[edit]Bighead has spoken of his inspiration from Blink-182, whom he considers made the Billboard chart with simple compositions: "if a three-year-old or a four-year-old can sing it, that's what I aim for. Like "Gucci Gang"".[4]
Music style
[edit]Musically, there are elements similar to rock (which draws from genres like punk and metal), such as electric guitars. Another major influence is synthesizers, which, like electric guitars, are electronic musical elements. These are also found in hip-hop, particularly in trap and other modern subgenres like crunk and bounce.
