Bayy ag Akhemuk (1903/1905 - 1 June 1975[1]) (ruled c. 1950 – 1975) was the Amenokal, or traditional leader, of the Kel Ahaggar, a Tuareg confederation in present-day Algeria. His reign spanned a period of significant change, including Algerian independence from France and the evolving relationship between the Kel Ahaggar and the new Algerian state.[2]
Accession to Power
[edit]Following the reign of Messar ag Amayas, Bey ag Akhamouk assumed the leadership of the Kel Ahaggar around 1950. The exact details surrounding his succession are unclear, but it likely followed established hereditary practices within the confederation.[3][4]
Algerian Independence (1962)
[edit]A pivotal event during Bey ag Akhamouk's reign was Algeria's achievement of independence from France in 1962. This fundamentally altered the political landscape for the Kel Ahaggar, who had previously operated under French colonial rule.[5][6]
