Australia has sent participants to every Quiz Olympiad since the inaugural event in 2016. Representative teams are selected by the nation's peak quiz association Quizzing Australia[1] and are known as the Quokkas.

Event history

[edit]

Quiz Olympiads are held every four years and organised by the International Quizzing Association which also runs the annual World Quizzing Championship among other events.

2016

[edit]

The inaugural Quiz Olympiad was held from 3-6 November 2016 in Athens, the host city for the inaugural Modern Olympics in 1896. It attracted 201 participants from 26 nations with Australia sending a team of eight.

2021

[edit]

The II Quiz Olympiad was originally scheduled to take place in Krakow in November 2020 but was postponed to 5-8 November 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It attracted 182 participants from 24 nations. Federal government travel restrictions in place at the time meant Australians resident in Australia were unable to attend, resulting in a single Australian competitor.[2]

2024

[edit]

The III Quiz Olympiad took place in Fuengirola, Spain from 5-8 November 2024. It attracted 227 participants from 24 nations. Australia sent a team of seven including The Chase Australia's "Supernerd" Issa Schultz. It is Australia's most successful Olympiad to date with two medals, and a fourth-place finish on the Medal Table.

Records set at this Olympiad include:

  • Marc Cheong became Australia's first-ever medallist by taking Bronze in the Digital World specialist quiz.
  • Ross Evans claimed Australia's first Gold medal, in the inaugural edition of the Individual (>70 category) quiz.
