Adriano Manocchia is an artist, born in New York in 1951.[1] He has a degree in literature from Pace University in New York. He was also a journalist, running his own film and photo agency that distributed for television and print media.[1] He currently resides in Cambridge, New York.[2] His papers are housed at the Montana State University Library in the Trout and Salmonid Special Collection.
Life and career
[edit]Manocchia grew up in a family of journalists; his father is a well-known Italian journalist and Manocchia began working as a freelance photographer while still in college. As a child, he grew up in the suburbs of the Bronx, he spent some time working with his dad, where he got interested in photography.[2] The day his classmates graduated from high school, he was off shooting pictures of the Indy 500.[2] He met his wife, Teresa, in Italy his junior year of college, marrying her in 1973.[2] Manocchia started his career in photo-journalism while completing his BA degree for literature from Pace University in New York. After graduating college, he ran his own photo and film agency covering events for television and print media. His work has taken him all over the world and is often accompanied by his wife. He has been aboard carrier USS Nimitz, on mid-air refueling missions, on the Goodyear Blimp, and on numerous White House assignments.[3] When he was first getting into oil painting, he had difficulty finding a topic he enjoyed painting, until he visited the Bronx Zoo, resulting in a wildlife painting of a Harris’s hawk. This caused Manocchia to turn to the great outdoors for painting subjects,[2] resulting in him traveling to Yellowstone every year to paint. One day, a man came to Manocchia’s gallery and asked if he had any “sporting art,” requesting a sketch of himself casting. This led to Manocchia developing a love for painting the waters & fly fishing.[2]
Famous works and Artistry
[edit]Manocchia calls his style “contemporary realism.” Using vibrant colors, his emotions are captured within his oil paintings. Teresa Manocchia describes how Adriano “takes a moment to absorb - to be absorbed by - his surroundings”.[2] He enjoys painting the water and the way it reflects and refracts light.[2] Manocchia’s favorite part of painting is to capture water, saying he feels “reborn near water,” and relating it to Norman Maclean’s quote “I am haunted by waters,” from A River Runs Through It.[3] He was selected “Artist of the Quarter” for the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation in 1991 & 1995.[3] Several of his art pieces were featured in the hardcover collector’s book Fine Art of Georgia’s Fairways.[3] His art has appeared on television as well, such as NBC’s Today Show.[3]
Conservation Support
[edit]Through his art, he has supported Ducks Unlimited, Atlantic Salmon Federation, Trout Unlimited, Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, American Cancer Society, & the Special Olympics. His work helped to raise over $250,000 for Ducks Unlimited from their Sponsors Print Program from 1990-1992.[3]
