[edit]- February 22 – Laken Riley, a 22-year-old nursing student at Augusta University, was murdered by Jose Antonio Ibarra, a 26-year-old Venezuelan migrant.[1]
- March 12
- The Democratic Party holds presidential nominating contests in Georgia.[2]
- The Republican Party holds presidential nominating contests in Georgia,[3]
- June 17 – Six people, including three children, are killed in a house fire in Newnan, five others are hospitalized.[4]
- June 27 – A Presidential Debate hosted by CNN between incumbent President Joe Biden and Former President Donald Trump takes place in Atlanta.[5]
- August 14 – The United States Drug Enforcement Administration announces that it seized more than 2,300 lb (1,000 kg) of methamphetamines hidden in celery at a farmers market in Forest Park. A Mexican citizen was arrested in relation to the seizure.[6]
- August 27 – Two workers are killed and one other is injured in a aircraft tire explosion at a Delta Air Lines maintenance facility near the Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport in Atlanta.[7]
- September 4 – 2024 Apalachee High School shooting: Four people are killed and nine people are wounded in a mass school shooting at Apalachee High School in Winder.[8]
- September 27 – At least 25 people are killed and more than 900,000 people are reported to be without power due to high winds and flooding caused by Hurricane Helene in Georgia. A rare flash flood emergency is also issued for the Atlanta metropolitan area.[9]
- September 29 – Approximately 17,000 people are ordered to evacuate their homes and more are ordered to shelter in place after a fire, potentially causing hazardous chlorine contamination, occurs at a BioLab facility in Conyers.[10]
- October 1 – The 39th President of the United States, Jimmy Carter, turns 100 years old, becoming the first centenarian former President in US history.[11]
- October 19 – At least seven people are killed and several others are reported missing when a dock collapses on Sapelo Island.[12]
- November 20 – José Antonio Ibarra is sentenced to life in prison without parole for the brutal murder of 22-year-old nursing student Laken Riley.[13]
