Good Article review for Causeway Bay Books disappearances - would welcome some help
I have started a GA review for Causeway Bay Books disappearances. Many of the references are in Chinese, would welcome assistance is checking them from any WP:HK participants who can speak/translate the various references. If you could weigh in at the GA review page with your comments that would be helpful. I am going to check the English languages references myself. 2016 Community Wishlist Survey Proposal to Revive Popular Pages
Greetings WikiProject Hong Kong/Archive 10 Members!
This is a one-time-only message to inform you about a technical proposal to revive your Popular Pages list in the 2016 Community Wishlist Survey that I think you may be interested in reviewing and perhaps even voting for:
If the above proposal gets in the Top 10 based on the votes, there is a high likelihood of this bot being restored so your project will again see monthly updates of popular pages.
Further, there are over 260 proposals in all to review and vote for, across many aspects of wikis.
Thank you for your consideration. Please note that voting for proposals continues through December 12, 2016.
Best regards, Stevietheman — Delivered: 18:01, 7 December 2016 (UTC)

Commons:Photo challenge February 2017 is Multilingualism
FYI, take a look in commons:Commons:Photo challenge/2017 - February - Multilingualism. I'm sure there is some nice picture regarding also Hong Kong that can be proposed, if you have it stored it somewhere. Please double-check Template:Special schools in Hong Kong
Hi! I started Template:Special schools in Hong Kong to be the English version of zh:Template:香港特殊學校列表, but there's two things: I haven't yet found the English names of all of the schools on the list, and there is one row name I haven't found the translation of? Categorization of Hong Kong related topic
As HK company had seperate company law, seperate nationality (BNO only, Canadian passport with HK id , HKSAR passport, etc.), I saw often other wikipedian remove the cat from the container cat "XYZ by country" and put HK related topic as a subcategories of China only, is that appropriate or did it had an administrator consensus before? Matthew_hk tc 06:57, 17 February 2017 (UTC)
- The categorization of things to do with Hong Kong (and other dependent territories) in lists of things by country is a longstanding stalemate situation. The current practice seems to be "don't mess with the list as set-up". If an editor unilaterally moves Hong Kong out of the "by country" category even though the previous situation was stable, you should revert them, discuss on the talk page, and notify the rest of us here. Deryck C. 12:12, 17 February 2017 (UTC)
- Category:Bookshops of Hong Kong you talk to the revertor. Matthew_hk tc 20:05, 17 February 2017 (UTC)
- @Deryck Chan: and @Matthew hk: I noticed that Category:Companies by country seems to have many entities which are technically not really countries. Isle of Man for example is considered a country - self governing, but reliant on the UK for defence and foreign policy. What is the definition of a country here? --Lemongirl942 (talk) 18:23, 21 February 2017 (UTC)
- We generally try follow the relevant topic definitions. When it comes to football, England, Scotland, and Wales are separate countries too. But then on the internet, the person with the most time wins. So it's up to each of us to argue our case. Deryck C. 18:34, 21 February 2017 (UTC)
Proposed user group for Hong Kong
As I don't know about any discussion spaces for Hong Kong editors who are not active in Chinese Wikipedia, I'll put my message there. After AffCom decided to de-recognize Wikimedia Hong Kong several Hong Kong editors in Chinese Wikipedia and I has proposed a brand new user group for our local Wikimedian community. Now I would like to invite any editors interested in to take part in the process of the user group's formation. The page doesn't provide much details, because everything is in planning stage, but we are drafting on this - with assistance from experience editors in other parts of Greater China. Should you have any questions, feel free to ask me. --Spring Roll Conan ( Talk · Contributions ) 15:42, 26 February 2017 (UTC)

Hong Kong–Singapore relations
Hi, I recently tagged Hong Kong–Singapore relations with {{proofreader needed}}. The quality of the English looks fine, but as a non-Chinese speaker I can't evaluate the accuracy of the translation; I'm only tagging it because this is an important article translated from 香港與新加坡關係 with virtually all the work done by a single editor, and additional eyeballs are always helpful. Thanks, Mathglot (talk) 23:52, 8 May 2017 (UTC)
"This is a Hong Kong name"
We have a lot of articles with the hatnote "This is a Chinese name. The surname is ___". But for many of those articles the name actually takes the form [European-language given name] [Surname] [Chinese-language given name] which is unique to Hong Kong and Southeast Asia. Should there be a new template that says "This is a Hong Kong name. The surname is ___"? Deryck C. 15:14, 26 April 2017 (UTC)
- I like this idea, although I'm disinclined to call it "Hong Kong name", bcause as you said this form used across SE Asia. Perhaps something like, "This is a combined Chinese & Western name. The surname is ___." Thoughts?
- That sounds like a good idea too. Deryck C. 11:57, 12 May 2017 (UTC)

You're receiving this message because your WikiProject or task force is signed up to receive the popular pages report. Every month, Community Tech bot will post at Wikipedia:WikiProject Hong Kong/Archive 10/Popular pages with a list of the most-viewed pages over the previous month that are within the scope of WikiProject Hong Kong.
We've made some enhancements to the original report. Here's what's new:
- The pageview data includes both desktop and mobile data.
- The report will include a link to the pageviews tool for each article, to dig deeper into any surprises or anomalies.

Request for comment on proposal at Template:Gazetted beaches in Hong Kong
Please comment on my proposal to omit the word Beach from the names of beaches in this template, for the reason redundancy. The discussion so far is below.
I propose we remove the word "Beach" from the titles of beaches in this box, as the name of the box makes clear this is about beaches. All these redundant, repetitive words are no more than visual clutter. —A L T E R C A R I ✍ 04:59, 19 May 2017 (UTC)
: I don't feel strongly either way, but – there must be a precedent out there we can refer to? This discussion is also relevant to Template:Public libraries in Hong Kong. Citobun (talk) 17:31, 1 June 2017 (UTC)
::* Template:Protected areas of California may be a relevant example of leaving out redundant words like Forest, Park, Sanctuary in this example.
::* Template:Beaches of New South Wales is a little inconsistent but seems to omit mostly.
::* Template:Beaches in Puerto Rico is also inconsistent but retains Beach and Playita at least once each.
:: Thank you for linking Public libraries in Hong Kong. I'll crosspost this to WT:HK for more responses. —A L T E R C A R I ✍ 13:36, 2 June 2017 (UTC)

Disambiguation links on pages tagged by this wikiproject
Wikipedia has many thousands of wikilinks which point to disambiguation pages. It would be useful to readers if these links directed them to the specific pages of interest, rather than making them search through a list. Members of WikiProject Disambiguation have been working on this and the total number is now below 20,000 for the first time. Some of these links require specialist knowledge of the topics concerned and therefore it would be great if you could help in your area of expertise.
A list of the relevant links on pages which fall within the remit of this wikiproject can be found at http://69.142.160.183/~dispenser/cgi-bin/topic_points.py?banner=WikiProject_Hong_Kong
Please take a few minutes to help make these more useful to our readers.— Rod talk 15:56, 3 December 2017 (UTC)
Categorizing Hong Kong images at Commons
Odd request, asking editors to help categorize photographs from my recent trip to Hong Kong, but I've posted them here, if any project members are interested in helping out by sorting images without captions. I've been working to identify subjects and sort accordingly, but you'll still see there are chunks of "unidentified" (by location) images, mostly showing streets and buildings. If you're familiar with Hong Kong, and like working over at Commons, I'd appreciate any help!

Railway and Station capitalization
The following discussion is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on the appropriate discussion page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.
Is there some special consideration about caps for Hong Kong related articles that I should know about? My case fix was revert at Hung Hom Station, but it looks like sources don't consistently cap it, so per MOS:CAPS, neither would we, right? Dicklyon (talk) 05:01, 16 December 2017 (UTC)
- @Dicklyon: I think they should have Station de-capitalized per consensus from the November RfC, as should most other metro and subway stations in the East Asia region; I've already done South Square of Chongqingbei Railway Station station. Citobun, note that individual WikiProjects should not govern article titling, and that generally Wikipedia practice tends to defer towards not capitalizing where it does not need to be done and where reliable sources use a mixture of capitalized and not capitalized. While Hong Kong does have its own variety of English I'm not aware of any major differences between it and British English in the written form. Jc86035 (talk) 05:11, 16 December 2017 (UTC)
- I do not see the logic in Hong Kong articles automatically following an RfC on Chinese railway stations. If an RfC found consensus on changing all Chinese railway station names from English to pinyin, as some people advocate, we would not automatically follow that here as the Hong Kong context is simply different. Likewise, for the English names of Hong Kong stations, we can refer to a breadth of English language popular and professional media that doesn't exist for any Chinese metro system.
- Anyway, my position is that "station" should be capitalised for Hong Kong stations as it forms part of the proper name, and it reflects how the name is invariably presented on the station buildings. In the mainland Chinese context there is often no English name, or pinyin is used instead, as at Beijing South. In Hong Kong, the English name is established and official. "Station" is often included as part of the proper name in publications and news media.
- If WPHK is not the venue to seek consensus on article titling, fine – I just feel that a Hong Kong-specific consensus should be sought somewhere for making a change this significant. Maybe I will be vastly overruled here, in which case I won't object – but there should be a discussion with the involvement of more Hong Kong editors. Citobun (talk) 05:56, 16 December 2017 (UTC)
- Presentation on station buildings is going to be either title case or all caps, naturally. What matters here is whether independent reliable sources treat these as proper names; that is, cap them in sentences, as opposed to in title/heading contexts. If you look at books, it's pretty clear that "station" is not usually treated as part of proper name of Hung Hom station. Same as in other countries. Nothing new here, is there? Dicklyon (talk) 06:03, 16 December 2017 (UTC)
- There are 10 results on that page. Of them, seven have "Station" capitalised. I have politely asked for a consensus to be developed with the involvement of more Hong Kong editors, so why do you insist on continuing to move articles, as at University station (MTR), rather than let a discussion take place? Citobun (talk) 06:11, 16 December 2017 (UTC)
- And 6 of 10 use it in lowercase (maybe we're not seeing the same hits?). Nowhere near the "consistently capped in sources" criterion of MOS:CAPS, and no indication of anything special about Hong Kong. I didn't notice that another article I was working on was HK-related. Dicklyon (talk) 06:17, 16 December 2017 (UTC)
- @Dicklyon and Citobun: could you link to the sources found? I think it would be best to avoid moving these pages until the discussion ends, partly because there are a number of templates which rely on the titles having a standard format to generate links. Jc86035 (talk) 07:41, 16 December 2017 (UTC)
- I gave this books search link above. When I go there, here's the first 10 I see:

- [1] – caps Station in Regulating Information Asymmetry in the Residential Real Estate Market (however, it references recent Wikipedia articles, so may be biased by what it found here)
- [2] – "Hung Hom station" in The Rough Guide to Southeast Asia On A Budget
- [3] – "Hung Hom station" in Lonely Planet China
- [4] – both way in the same section in Time Out Hong Kong"
- [5] – "Hung Hom station" in Hong Kong & Macau"
- [6] – capped Station in Hong Kong & Macau
- [7] – capped Station in Hong Kong Tuttle Travel Pack
- [8] – "Hung Hom station" in Hong Kong ( Hongkong), Macau (Macao) and Guangzhou (Kanton)
- [9] – "Hung Hom station" in Swimming with Asian Sharks
- [10] – "HUNG HOM STATION" in Hong Kong Mass Transport Study (you might need to go back to the search hits to see the snippet on this one).
So this time I got 5 lowercase, 3 uppercase, 1 that does both mixed, and 1 all caps. This is pretty typical of the sort of names for which we default to lowercase, i.e. do not interpret as "proper" names. Dicklyon (talk) 16:59, 16 December 2017 (UTC)
Similarly, in news hits I'm seeing 4 lowercase and 3 upper, and 3 that use "Hung Hom" without the word station to refer to the station (even when I search for the quoted phrase including station). You have to click through some of the hits to find how they use it. Dicklyon (talk) 17:12, 16 December 2017 (UTC)
- @Dicklyon: Thanks. I think an RM would be needed for this, since Hong Kong station, Fo Tan station, Quarry Bay station and Lai King station have been edited before. Jc86035 (talk) 07:22, 17 December 2017 (UTC)
- Yes, good idea; if people are still objecting, after the all the recent consensus in every other country, then we'll do a Hong Kong specific multi-RM discussion. Dicklyon (talk) 16:42, 17 December 2017 (UTC)

WikiProject collaboration notice from the Portals WikiProject
The reason I am contacting you is because there are one or more portals that fall under this subject, and the Portals WikiProject is currently undertaking a major drive to automate portals that may affect them.
Portals are being redesigned.
The new design features are being applied to existing portals.
At present, we are gearing up for a maintenance pass of portals in which the introduction section will be upgraded to no longer need a subpage. In place of static copied and pasted excerpts will be self-updating excerpts displayed through selective transclusion, using the template {{Transclude lead excerpt}}.
The discussion about this can be found here.
Maintainers of specific portals are encouraged to sign up as project members here, noting the portals they maintain, so that those portals are skipped by the maintenance pass. Currently, we are interested in upgrading neglected and abandoned portals. There will be opportunity for maintained portals to opt-in later, or the portal maintainers can handle upgrading (the portals they maintain) personally at any time.
Background
On April 8th, 2018, an RfC ("Request for comment") proposal was made to eliminate all portals and the portal namespace. On April 17th, the Portals WikiProject was rebooted to handle the revitalization of the portal system. On May 12th, the RfC was closed with the result to keep portals, by a margin of about 2 to 1 in favor of keeping portals.
Since the reboot, the Portals WikiProject has been busy building tools and components to upgrade portals.
So far, 84 editors have joined.
If you would like to keep abreast of what is happening with portals, see the newsletter archive.
If you have any questions about what is happening with portals or the Portals WikiProject, please post them on the WikiProject's talk page.
Thank you. — The Transhumanist 07:41, 30 May 2018 (UTC)

Use of linktext template
I'd like to start a discussion on the occurrences and methods of linking inline Chinese text. I just saw the linked text in the article Hong Kong Top Footballer Awards, where each character was linked individually. It seems to me that it would be more reasonable and useful for readers to link each lexical word rather than each character, such as "香港", "足球明星", "選舉". Any comments? -- Ohc ¡digame! 10:24, 25 October 2018 (UTC)
- I think it‘s a bad idea to link Chinese words or chars. We don’t do it for English so why Chinese? Generally Chinese should only appear in articles alongside English which explains it, linking to Wiktionary for an explanation is therefore redundant; it should be clear from the article what it represents. Of course there is more to a word or char than that one meaning, but that is also true of English words but we don’t link English words in the same way.--JohnBlackburnewordsdeeds 10:44, 25 October 2018 (UTC)
- I think there used to be a trend to link to Wiktionary for individual Hanzi, but this practice eventually became frowned upon. I am also of the opinion that we generally shouldn't link to dictdefs of Chinese characters unless the dictdef is of special significance to the topic of the article. Deryck C. 11:10, 25 October 2018 (UTC)

Discord
Anyone here have some interest in having a channel for this WikiProject on the unofficial Wikimedia community Discord server? It would be nice to do some coordination in real time. Nova Crystallis (Talk) 20:29, 15 March 2019 (UTC)
- Discussion about editing in wikipedia should record here. Since no one ever to participate in talk page for e.g. merge tag for articles related to Hong Kong, it is not helpful to open a discord either. Also , it may against wiki policy. Matthew hk (talk) 09:20, 16 March 2019 (UTC)
A new newsletter directory is out!
A new Newsletter directory has been created to replace the old, out-of-date one. If your WikiProject and its taskforces have newsletters (even inactive ones), or if you know of a missing newsletter (including from sister projects like WikiSpecies), please include it in the directory! The template can be a bit tricky, so if you need help, just post the newsletter on the template's talk page and someone will add it for you.

At 08:28, 7 July 2010 apparently. When FootballHK (moved Hong Kong cricket team to Hong Kong national cricket team over redirect) But is Hong Kong national cricket team right, or was Hong Kong cricket team more correct? In ictu oculi (talk) 15:39, 27 March 2019 (UTC)
- The same way Montserrat has a national football team. Nova Crystallis (Talk) 16:41, 27 March 2019 (UTC)
- Montserrat is a British Overseas Territory (BOT), many of which are nations. In ictu oculi (talk) 10:48, 28 March 2019 (UTC)
- There is Hong Kong national football team since Hong Kong joined FIFA in 1954 and as of today it still a full member. For cricket i am not really sure but the umbrella association Sports Federation and Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China is a full member of International Olympic Committee. "Foo national foo team " is a standard naming convention for so long even some of the "nation" are not a sovereign state or a member of UN. However, Hong Kong is a full member of WTO too. Resolution regarding the Fugitive Offenders and Mutual Legal Assistance in Criminal Matters Legislation (Amendment) Bill 2019 (of the Hong Kong Community)
Wikimedia Community User Group Hong Kong plans to resolute the following statement:
Rights for the Wikimedia movement to provide existing services in Hong Kong is one of the core missions of Wikimedia Community User Group Hong Kong. It includes both the provision and (unlimited) access of free knowledge.
The Fugitive Offenders and Mutual Legal Assistance in Criminal Matters Legislation (Amendment) Bill 2019 has brought underlying fear the above-mentioned mission. In this Bill, restrictions for extraditing personnel to China are lifted. As seen by how the People’s Republic of China engages in activities against access of Wikipedia (and its sister projects), the Hong Kong User Group is in dire concern of the silencing effect this bill brings, and how it fundamentally uncovers the protection of rights for the Wikimedia Movement to provide services (including, but not limited to access of Wikipedia) in Hong Kong.
The Hong Kong User Group is in dire concern of the effects the proposed bill may bring, and urges all parties to stay calm and keep rational. We also hope the government may withdraw the above-mentioned bill, and to resubmit the bill only when citizens (and different stakeholders) of the city are properly consulted and the concerns resolved.
Shall there be any opinions regarding the above statement, please feel free to comment below. This statement will be official once three days after the posting date if there are no opposition.
With thanks,
