Asha'man redirects to List of Wheel of Time characters but has no entry there. It appears 31 times, always in the description of a character; e.g., the very first entry:
- Logain Ablar: Previously a False Dragon; gentled by the White Tower and Healed by Nynaeve al'Meara; later a sworn ally to Rand al'Thor and a leading Asha'man. In A Memory of Light, Logain becomes the new M'Hael of the Black Tower.

WikiProject collaboration notice from the Portals WikiProject
The reason I am contacting you is because there are one or more portals that fall under this subject, and the Portals WikiProject is currently undertaking a major drive to automate portals that may affect them.
Portals are being redesigned.
The new design features are being applied to existing portals.
At present, we are gearing up for a maintenance pass of portals in which the introduction section will be upgraded to no longer need a subpage. In place of static copied and pasted excerpts will be self-updating excerpts displayed through selective transclusion, using the template {{Transclude lead excerpt}}.
The discussion about this can be found here.
Maintainers of specific portals are encouraged to sign up as project members here, noting the portals they maintain, so that those portals are skipped by the maintenance pass. Currently, we are interested in upgrading neglected and abandoned portals. There will be opportunity for maintained portals to opt-in later, or the portal maintainers can handle upgrading (the portals they maintain) personally at any time.
Background
On April 8th, 2018, an RfC ("Request for comment") proposal was made to eliminate all portals and the portal namespace. On April 17th, the Portals WikiProject was rebooted to handle the revitalization of the portal system. On May 12th, the RfC was closed with the result to keep portals, by a margin of about 2 to 1 in favor of keeping portals.
Since the reboot, the Portals WikiProject has been busy building tools and components to upgrade portals.
So far, 84 editors have joined.
If you would like to keep abreast of what is happening with portals, see the newsletter archive.
If you have any questions about what is happening with portals or the Portals WikiProject, please post them on the WikiProject's talk page.
Thank you. — The Transhumanist 07:36, 30 May 2018 (UTC)

Any guidelines?
Hello, I have a question:
Are there any guidelines for writing articles about fictional characters? We seems to have numerous articles on them, yet (being involved in a row over whether one such has 'real world notability') I'm hard pressed to find anything relevant.
What exactly justifies articles on, say, Batman, or Sarah Sidle, or Captain Flint, but not (as in my case) Italian detective Guido Brunetti? Any offers? Swanny18 (talk) 18:58, 6 July 2018 (UTC)

A new newsletter directory is out!
A new Newsletter directory has been created to replace the old, out-of-date one. If your WikiProject and its taskforces have newsletters (even inactive ones), or if you know of a missing newsletter (including from sister projects like WikiSpecies), please include it in the directory! The template can be a bit tricky, so if you need help, just post the newsletter on the template's talk page and someone will add it for you.

Ethnicity
Is it fair to assume (in broad strokes) that a character in a film or television is the same ethnicity as the actor who playes them? I'm asking mostly for categorization.★Trekker (talk) 16:58, 15 August 2019 (UTC)
- No, that would be silly. The character and the actor are not to be confused. How tall is Dr. Who? Is M from James Bond male or female? We take what the creator says about the character, and would mention ethnicity only in the very few instances where it has been deemed by the author to be relevant. Captainllama (talk) 00:10, 16 August 2019 (UTC)
- I said "in broad strokes". It's not remotly silly to assume that a character played by a black actor is, you know, black.★Trekker (talk) 10:25, 16 August 2019 (UTC)
- "It's not remotly silly to assume that a character played by a black actor is, you know, black"
- I said "in broad strokes". It's not remotly silly to assume that a character played by a black actor is, you know, black.★Trekker (talk) 10:25, 16 August 2019 (UTC)
- With respect, it absolutely is silly to assume that. We are told what we need to know about a character so there is no need to make assumptions. Why do so? Characters are created, actors play characters. They are not the same thing and to conflate the two is always folly. Actors play across type all the time. Do we assume the character is bald, gay, and lives in Paris just because that describes the actor? Of course not.
- Sometimes it matters. Virgil Tibbs is black, Charlie Chan is Asian, To Kill a Mockingbird would make no sense if Tom Robinson's race wasn't mentioned. But is Jean-Luc Picard a white starship captain? Is it useful to categorise him as such? Is Felix Leiter a black friend of James Bond? How about Achilles?
- No, stick with what we are explicitly told, extrapolating from the actor and assuming to apply it to the character is original research, however broadly you stroke it.

Rose Tico "Portrayed by" and "Voiced by" infobox fields
Seeking opinions for a WP:CONSENSUS at this discussion at the Rose Tico page, which I've recently expanded and nominated for GA. The issue at hand is whether the actress' name is needed in the "Voiced by" field of the character infobox in addition to the "Portrayed by" field. This is a live-action performance so the "Voiced by" field was not originally filled in, but an IP user keeps re-adding it. — Hunter Kahn 12:03, 18 August 2019 (UTC)
This project is mentioend on Talk:List of Wheel of Time characters . So I ask my question here: how come major characters of the The Wheel of Time are all redirected to this page which is just a list of uninformative minimal descriptions? Characters like Rand al'Thor, Matrim Cauthon, Perrin Aybara and probably a handful of others deserve their own page.
Apprantly these characters used to have their own page, but those pages are deleted. Are the deletion and the redirect done as part of this project? Is there a log of the discussion that led to the deltion avaliable somewhere? If not, what is the best way to change the situation? Hg03u (talk) 21:33, 20 August 2019 (UTC)

Rick O'Connel
I spotted that Rick O'Connell redirects to Mummy Franchise characters. But, he is the lead protagonist in all 3 movies of the series. So shouldn't there be an additional article. I myself have created such articles like Dr Smolder Bravestone, which was reviewed and accepted. But the Jack Dawson article was deleted. Also, Imhotep (The Mummy) is an article on the lead antagonist of the series. While Imhotep is in 3 movies and 1 Tv show, Rick is in 3 movies. As I have presented my view, please comment as you are an experienced editor. Thank you.--Atlantis77177 (talk) 06:03, 2 December 2020 (UTC)
- Hi, Atlantis77177. Whether or not a fictional character should have a standalone page will depend on coverage about that specific character. If a character has appeared in multiple works, it can be presumed that it could be covered beyond each individual work's article. There could be a list of characters at the franchise article, there could be a list article focusing on the characters, and there could be a standalone article for a well-covered character. The possibility of any of these needs to be demonstrated by coverage about the character or characters. Looking at List of The Mummy (film series) characters, unfortunately it does not appear very encyclopedic. Compare it to something like List of Smallville characters.
- Regarding Rick O'Connell, you would need to compile significant coverage about the character across multiple works. Unfortunately, I am not finding that Dr. Smolder Bravestone warrants a standalone article either because the coverage does not indicate that character details could be covered outside the franchise article or a list article of the franchise characters. BD2412, it seems like you've done work on numerous character articles. Do you have any thoughts about any of these matters? Erik (talk | contrib) (ping me) 20:37, 2 December 2020 (UTC)
- The question of whether a fictional character should have an article is actually not that much different from the question of whether a real person should have an article. The key inquiry is whether there are substantial reliable sources about the character, and whether there is coverage sufficiently independent of the work in which the character appears to justify a separate article. BD2412 T 22:31, 2 December 2020 (UTC)
Plot
I created the articles Dr. Smolder Bravestone, Ruby Roundhouse, Mouse Finbar, Seaplane McDonough and Professor Sheldon Oberon. It was suggested that the plot(the character's events in the movie) was discouraged in the article.
For my defense- articles like Harry Potter (character) and Imhotep (The Mummy) have their own article with a plot sequence. Please give your opinion. Thank you.--Atlantis77177 (talk) 13:12, 5 December 2020 (UTC)
- Per WP:WAF#Characters and other fictional elements, "When characters or other elements from fictional works are notable for their own standalone article, it is acceptable and often necessary to include a narration of that element's role in the events of the work(s) they are a part of. However, such narration must employ out-of-universe style and include real-world descriptors." However, when we look at the policy of WP:PLOT, it says, "Wikipedia articles should not be... Summary-only descriptions of works. Wikipedia treats creative works (including, for example, works of art or fiction, video games, documentaries, research books or papers, and religious texts) in an encyclopedic manner, discussing the development, design, reception, significance, and influence of works in addition to concise summaries of those works."
- I think it is appropriate to consider a fictional character to be similar to a work of fiction. In this vein, that means that an article about a character should cover its "development, design, reception, significance, and influence" more than covering its narration. I don't think that if a character has appeared in a trilogy that we need 700 words times three films dumped into the character's article. The narration about the character should be more concise than that. Erik (talk | contrib) (ping me) 14:08, 5 December 2020 (UTC)
The article Lifeform (comics) has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
non-notable fictional character that appeared in one story across four annuals 30 years ago; no secondary-source coverage.
While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}}
notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.
Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}}
will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. JHunterJ (talk) 17:42, 9 December 2020 (UTC)

Dr. Smolder Bravestone
Could someone from this WikiProject take a look at Dr. Smolder Bravestone and re-assess it? It was given an assessment here, but the editor who did so was subsequently blocked as a WP:SOCK; so, it might be better for someone else to take a look at the article and assess it, especially since it's tagged with {{Cleanup rewrite}}. -- Marchjuly (talk) 05:56, 9 January 2021 (UTC)

--Zora Champion Mipha (talk) 19:04, 14 January 2021 (UTC)
- Hi, it looks like Mipha is covered at Characters of The Legend of Zelda. Regarding the policies, I am not sure if the character would be notable enough for a standalone article. See WP:WAF#Fictional characters and other elements for more. It would need to be a substantial amount of significant coverage for a standalone article. I would also check with WT:VG about this too, as I believe they have a few Good and Featured Articles about video-game characters. Erik (talk | contrib) (ping me) 19:46, 14 January 2021 (UTC)

Redirecting articles on [mostly] minor The Wire characters
There are a whole bunch of articles on The Wire characters that include nothing other than in-universe information and make no claims to notability. They are basically long descriptions of everything the character does in the show, i.e., the kind of stuff that belongs on a different wiki (like thewire.fandom.com) but not here. I believe the majority of these should be blanked and redirected to List of The Wire characters or one of the pages under it.
I started blanking and redirecting a few, but this was contested by another editor (see User talk:Interstatefive/Archives/2022/April#Your_revert) per WP:PAGEBLANKING. So, following that editor's recommendation, I then went ahead and PRODded all the articles in question, but that was also contested by another editor (see User talk:61.18.156.43#Mass Proposed Deletion of articles), who recommended that this should be discussed in a bundled AfD. I have no problem with opening an AfD for that, but I can't for procedural reasons (I can't create an AfD page without registering an account, and I don't want to do that), so I figured I'd try to start the discussion here instead; if anyone sees this and agrees that an AfD is warranted, I hope they will create one [and feel free to directly copy whatever I've compiled here]). Alternatively, it could just be discussed here or at one of the article's talk pages.
The articles in question fall into several categories, shown below (ordered from most to least warranting of blanking-and-redirecting):
- Articles with only in-universe content
- Stan Valchek
- Kenard
- Leander Sydnor
- Beadie Russell
- Ervin Burrell
- Howard "Bunny" Colvin
- Rhonda Pearlman

- Articles where the only out-of-universe content is behind-the-scenes trivia, but nothing that makes a claim about notability
- Articles that make only a very negligible claim to notability (e.g. one random article that included them in a list of popular characters; the bar I've used here is if an article only has one reference talking about the critical reaction to the character or any other not-in-universe stuff other "origins of the character" sort of stuff [the latter of which I don't consider useful for establishing notability under most circumstances])
So far the only person who I've seen object to redirecting these on content-based grounds (as opposed to the other two editors above I mentioned, who only objected to the procedure with which I was going about it but didn't express any opposition in principle to redirecting these) is User:Premeditated Chaos, who reverted one of the prods (on the article Kima Greggs) and said "there's enough critical commentary available about the character in academic sources for a clear claim of notability", i.e., the article can be improved to a level that will meet the inclusion threshold. On this I beg to differ; I have not done a comprehensive literature search, but I skimmed the first few pages of Google Scholar and Google books and, while I found a lot of books and articles analyzing The Wire and many of these happen to mention this character, it doesn't look like any are specifically about this character.
Beyond that, I have not yet seen anyone actually suggesting these articles should be kept. There was an AfD on this nine years ago (Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Alma Gutierrez) and not one person spoke up in favor of keeping; all anyone said was that it should be discussed somewhere other than AfD. (One participant was in favor of merging them all, as I am proposing here, and two participants just said it should be discussed somewhere other than AfD.)
Ultimately I guess what we have here is a philosophical disagreement on Inclusionism (i.e., "some of these topics might merit inclusion, and the onus is on someone else to prove which ones don't") vs. Deletionism (i.e., "these topics have not been demonstrated to merit inclusion so they should be deleted except where someone can demonstrate on an article-by-article basis which ones merit inclusion), which I don't really want to get into, but I guess one of the other of these views is necessarily informing what people think of what to do with these articles (it's obvious which camp I'm in).
Anyway, I don't think redirecting all of these is necessarily contrary to the spirit of inclusionism anyway; it mostly entails just deleting a lot of unencyclopedic in-universe junk that shouldn't be here anyway, and someone with more time on their hands could always come back in later and re-create (i.e. un-redirect) some of these articles with actually encyclopedic stuff the second time around. I don't think any Wikipedian of any philosophical bent could possibly object to removing almost all the content of a trash page like this; the only real question is what the form of that removal should take, i.e., wholesale blanking-and-redirecting, vs. removing almost all the content but leaving the article there as a stub with a very brief synopsis and a big pile of cleanup tags at the top. Either way, I'm sure everyone agrees that most of the content in all of these articles needs to go. 61.18.156.43 (talk) 03:23, 9 April 2022 (UTC) 61.18.156.43 (talk) 03:23, 9 April 2022 (UTC)
- The Wire is considered to be one of the greatest television shows of all time, #2 behind The Sopranos. These standalone articles were quite helpful for me to understand the plot when I was watching the show. I don't see why you want to remove information that readers can utilize and access. Hard disagree with your proposal. The show is significant enough to have standalone articles. LJF2019 talk 19:29, 17 April 2022 (UTC)
- Notability is not inherited. Subjects that don't meet notability guidelines independent of the works they are associated with do not have the necessary level of coverage to produce a article that is verifiable to our standards. All topics, including all TV shows, are subject to the the general notability guideline. signed, Rosguill talk 20:00, 17 April 2022 (UTC)
- Echoing Rosguill: the fact that a show is great does not mean that every trivial character from the show gets a standalone article. And the fact that an article was helpful doesn't mean it meets the inclusion criteria (see WP:ITSUSEFUL). 61.18.156.43 (talk) 00:46, 18 April 2022 (UTC)
- Quick update: when I posted this proposal I also notified several editors who had objected to my redirects before. While none of them have replied here, a few replied on their talk pages, so I am noting those replies here for the sake of keeping all the discussion in one place. One user said he agrees the articles are bad, but did not address the substantive question (whether they should be redirected, turned into stubs, or left alone). Another said that, while they probably agree with redirecting the articles on minor characters, the ones on major characters (specifically Kima Greggs) have the potential to pass GNG and thus should be tagged for cleanup but not redirected. I agree with the latter editor so I started redirecting the articles on minor characters (the division between "major" and "minor" is of course subjective) but intend to skip Kima Greggs and instead turn that article into a short stub with cleanup tags. 61.18.156.43 (talk) 00:52, 18 April 2022 (UTC)
@61.etc: I'd say you prettty much have your answer. The editors that have contributed to those pages, along with the ones that reverted your blank-and-redirect edits, plus the "several editors who had objected to
[your] redirects before
", along with ediors here in favour of those pages, and, all the editors that have not shown up to to support you, demonstrates a consensus to keep those pages. (Plus all the implied consensus that built up since they were created.) Might be time to let this go.
On a side note, you wrote: "I can't create an AfD page without registering an account, and I don't want to do that
"... why not? You've only made 144 edits with this account (all to The Wire character pages, but clearly you have more than 144 edits worth of experience, so what is all this about? - wolf 15:45, 18 April 2022 (UTC)
- Thanks for your reply. Does anyone actually have a reason these articles should be kept (i.e., evidence that they meet the GNG, which we presumably are all deeply familiar with), or just complaints about procedure? As far as I can tell, out of the three editors who have said anything whatsoever about the content of the pages here, one (User:LJF2019) said they should stay [but for reasons that are explicitly contra WP:AVOID—your own claim, FYI, is also in WP:AVOID, because "implied consensus" is not a thing AFAIK, see WP:ARTICLEAGE], and two (User talk:Rosguill and me) said or at least implied that they should go, so I don't see any consensus to keep (if anything, there is perhaps no consensus either way, partly because hardly anyone will even respond to the issue).
- Regarding your side note, (1) you are wrong (if you look back in the contribs of this account you will see edits to other topics; the only reason there are a lot of edits to this topic is because (a) there are a lot of articles about it, and (b) this is the only topic anyone objected to my edits about); and (2) the reasons I do or do not want to register an account are patently irrelevant to whether or not these articles are encyclopedic, so I see no reason for either of us to discuss them here. Whether someone is logged in to an account or not has no bearing on a content disagreement (or is Wikipedia no longer "the encyclopedia that anyone can edit"?) 61.18.156.43 (talk) 17:54, 18 April 2022 (UTC)
- 1) You linked a dab. You've also linked some essays, which are not WP:PG (just sayin). 2) Sure, it's the encyclopaedia that anyone can edit, but also the one where only registered editors can initiate AfDs. 3) You yourself just said there is "no consensus" here, so... why keep pushing with this? - wolf 23:19, 18 April 2022 (UTC)
- I’m one of the realest editors you’ll find on this site. What it boils down to is that you want to remove a significant amount of useful information and you’re editing from an IP. People are going to oppose you; you come off as trying to damage the project rather than help it. The articles have been there for years. Thousands of people have used the information on those articles. And you want to remove it and redirect it so it’s no longer accessible. No thanks. LJF2019 talk 19:38, 18 April 2022 (UTC)
- We need to follow policies and guidelines. Information being useful does not mean that it is appropriate for an encyclopedia. Per policy at WP:PLOT, "Wikipedia articles should not be summary-only descriptions of works. Wikipedia treats creative works (including, for example, works of art or fiction, video games, documentaries, research books or papers, and religious texts) in an encyclopedic manner, discussing the development, design, reception, significance, and influence of works in addition to concise summaries of those works." When it comes to fictional characters, we need that treatment. A lot of these articles do not have that treatment, so their existence on Wikipedia for years does not matter if they are not following the guidelines. It is possible that certain characters warrant standalone articles, but that splitting-off needs to be evidenced because all of these characters exist under the umbrella of The Wire. See something like list of Smallville characters where notable characters have their own articles (and summary sections) where non-notable characters have a few paragraphs about them in the broader list article. Something like that should be done here. Erik (talk | contrib) (ping me) 20:55, 18 April 2022 (UTC)

- Huh. Many of these articles should be redirected. Given there is some opposition to this, AfD is the way. Anon really should create an account and join us in the cleanup as a regular fellow editor. Hope to see you (and the articles) at AfD. Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 20:51, 18 April 2022 (UTC)
- I considered AfD as well, but the last time these were taken to AfD (Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Alma Gutierrez) everyone just said it should be discussed somewhere else; hence why I tried to open a discussion here. So far the experience I've had here is that every time I point out these articles have problems, almost nobody disagrees with that assessment but everyone just tells me to forum-shop elsewhere. (also: Hi Piotrus, good to see a familiar name here! I'm not using my account anymore but I remember your work from back when I used to be a regular editor and I appreciate all you do for the encyclopedia!) 61.18.156.43 (talk) 04:18, 19 April 2022 (UTC)
- How about following the process at Wikipedia:Merging or Wikipedia:Proposed article mergers? Have the discussion at Talk:List of The Wire characters. From what I can tell, any standalone article that has just in-universe information (and violates policy at WP:PLOT) should just have their articles' lead sections copied and pasted into the list article. For starring characters, probably possible to keep them standalone, but the rest likely best belong on the list. EDIT: You could use this as a starting point where characters with the least number of episodes could be assessed first, ignoring the topmost ones for now. Erik (talk | contrib) (ping me) 19:11, 19 April 2022 (UTC)
- I'd be fine with either of those. It's just extremely frustrating that every time I try to raise this issue, everyone just says "discuss it somewhere else", and often does not participate in the discussion that I open. I recognize that you are trying to be helpful and constructive (and indeed are being much more helpful and constructive than most of the other editors I've interacted with on this), but even your helpful comment here is also another example of what I just described above (i.e., people not disagreeing with my criticism of the content but telling me to open a discussion somewhere else). By now I've tried to start this discussion many times (first by redirecting some of the articles and then going to the talk page of the editor who disagreed with blanking, then by using PROD and again going to the talk page of the editor who disagreed with blanking, then by starting this discussion because I thought this might be a good centralized place to get feedback from more people) and every time I'm mostly just told things along the lines of "discuss it somewhere else". I think we already agree on the content issues (redirect/merge the minor characters and keep the major ones—deciding who is "major" and "minor" is precisely the kind of thing that it would be useful to have discussion on, rather than just more and more discussion of where the discussion should be) because they are pretty obvious. 61.18.156.43 (talk) 04:36, 20 April 2022 (UTC)
- Honestly, the list of characters to tackle is pretty daunting, and the degree of notability will vary. So that seems to mean one overall decision seems unlikely, so to do this one article at a time is probably not appealing as a whole. I just mention the above so you can have a consensus to actually complete what you were trying to do, overruling the lazy reverting on some editors' parts. Erik (talk | contrib) (ping me) 14:42, 20 April 2022 (UTC)

- So we can just decide not to make a Wikipedia account in order to bypass the AFD process? Neat. --SubSeven (talk) 03:10, 19 April 2022 (UTC)
- I never said anything about bypassing AfD. As I've already said (I don't remember if it was in this thread or elsewhere), I didn't think AfD was appropriate because this was already taken to AfD before and, while nobody actually said the articles should be kept, everyone at the AfD said it should be discussed somewhere other than AfD. I did consider AfD at one point, but worried that it would just have the same outcome again, with everyone just saying "this should be discussed somewhere else". What's the point of opening an AfD when people have already done that and concluded that AfD is not the place? If we decide to open an AfD again, we need to have some new reason to argue why this stuff really does belong at AfD and the conclusion of the previous AfD was wrong. Anyway, the fact that I don't have an account is irrelevant to the discussion because if we do decide to open an AfD I could write the rationale here and someone else could post it or I could do it via WT:AFD (at the time I first started this thread I had forgotten that that route was an option), so it would be great if people could actually address the content issue instead of just constantly having hissy fits about the fact that I'm not logged in to an account [which, again, is a fact that's completely irrelevant to the content issue at hand]. 61.18.156.43 (talk) 04:18, 19 April 2022 (UTC)
User script to detect unreliable sources
I have (with the help of others) made a small user script to detect and highlight various links to unreliable sources and predatory journals. Some of you may already be familiar with it, given it is currently the 39th most imported script on Wikipedia. The idea is that it takes something like
- John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14. (
John Smith "[https://www.deprecated.com/article Article of things]" ''Deprecated.com''. Accessed 2020-02-14.
)
and turns it into something like
- John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14.
It will work on a variety of links, including those from {{cite web}}, {{cite journal}} and {{doi}}.
The script is mostly based on WP:RSPSOURCES, WP:NPPSG and WP:CITEWATCH and a good dose of common sense. I'm always expanding coverage and tweaking the script's logic, so general feedback and suggestions to expand coverage to other unreliable sources are always welcomed.
Do note that this is not a script to be mindlessly used, and several caveats apply. Details and instructions are available at User:Headbomb/unreliable. Questions, comments and requests can be made at User talk:Headbomb/unreliable.

Edits by IPv6 range
Hello. I came across some edits in articles that appear to be characters in series or TV programs within this dynamic IP range: 2604:3D09:7581:F500:C496:79B6:9CB9:B6D9/32. Some of them have been reverted already (e.g., at Midnight Mass (miniseries), Ned Leeds) others not (Sonic the Hedgehog (IDW Publishing), Kyle Abbott (The Young and the Restless)). I'm unfamiliar with this whole topic area, so maybe someone here can take a look and see if there's anything to be concerned about. Mathglot (talk) 00:51, 4 May 2022 (UTC)

Project-independent quality assessments
Quality assessments by Wikipedia editors rate articles in terms of completeness, organization, prose quality, sourcing, etc. Most wikiprojects follow the general guidelines at Wikipedia:Content assessment, but some have specialized assessment guidelines. A recent Village pump proposal was approved and has been implemented to add a |class=
parameter to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, which can display a general quality assessment for an article, and to let project banner templates "inherit" this assessment.
No action is required if your wikiproject follows the standard assessment approach. Over time, quality assessments will be migrated up to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, and your project banner will automatically "inherit" any changes to the general assessments for the purpose of assigning categories.
However, if your project has decided to "opt out" and follow a non-standard quality assessment approach, all you have to do is modify your wikiproject banner template to pass {{WPBannerMeta}} a new |QUALITY_CRITERIA=custom
parameter. If this is done, changes to the general quality assessment will be ignored, and your project-level assessment will be displayed and used to create categories, as at present. Aymatth2 (talk) 20:12, 10 April 2023 (UTC)

Fixing up fictional people
So, I ran into Taro Tsujimoto, who was a hockey player that didn't exist. This then leads to "Category:Fictional ice hockey players", then "Category:Fictional winter sportspeople", then "Category:Fictional sportspeople" and then that leads to "Category:Fictional characters by occupational types".
"Category:Fictional characters by occupational types" is where I think the categories get messed up. I feel like Obi-Wan Kenobi is a fictional character, but I feel like Taro Tsujimoto is a fictional person. Maybe there's not a huge difference but as someone who was looking to find information on people who don't exist, it is confusing and lead me to the wrong place.
Any thoughts? KatoKungLee (talk) 23:36, 17 August 2023 (UTC)

Assistance with Dad's Army characters
Hi everyone. I was just wondering whether anyone could assist me with improving the Dad's Army character articles?
The articles are mainly made up of in-universe information that is unsourced or not sourced enough, and these articles need to be rewritten in order to sound more encyclopedic. Additional information relating to each character's reception and their creation would also be needed. The following articles need attention:
- Captain Mainwaring
- Sergeant Wilson
- Lance Corporal Jones
- Private Frazer
- Private Godfrey
- Private Walker
- Private Pike
There are a number of good resources out there, including The Complete A-Z of Dad's Army by Richard Webber, which has already been referenced in many of the articles, and Dad's Army: The Story of a Classic Television Show by Graham McCann. If you would like to assist, please leave a message on my talk page so I can designate an article for you to work on (or you can nominate an article for yourself), and start editing! Many thanks, Lotsw73 (talk) 05:53, 24 January 2024 (UTC)

Assistance with Draft:Dennis Loughran
I was trying to make my first article about the following character from Hotel Transylvania in a draft article, but the reason it got demoted down to a draft, is because it is not suitable as written to remain published.
Here is the following draft that I'm referring to: Draft:Dennis Loughran.
If anyone has any suggestions, or has any ideas for me to improve this article draft, please reply. Clay2004 (talk) 18:09, 15 March 2024 (UTC)
- Hi, Clay. The reason it got demoted is because a Wikipedia article about a fictional character needs to be based on what reliable sources write about that character. To only describe the character as they appear in the media is only a small part of what a character's article should cover, and that description should be basic enough that all readers can agree. (It can be a slippery slope for one of us editors to presume a character's personality.) The idea behind Wikipedia editing, in essence, is summarizing what others have written about a topic. Even then, it's possible that a fictional character may not warrant their own article, if that character can be adequately summarized in a higher-level article. List of Smallville characters is one example, where it is a mix of characters that do not have their own articles and characters who have their own articles with the list summarizing these articles. In the case of Dennis, something like this could be used to indicate, "The rest of this anemic mixed-marriage soap opera pivots on whether Dennis will grow up to be a chip off the old bat..." This is another Dennis-focused piece that could be used. And this could be used to describe the character's design. Feel free to ask any questions! Erik (talk | contrib) (ping me) 18:48, 15 March 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks for the information, Erik. I've been updating the draft, and added in footnotes. These footnotes need to be reviewed, but I would love it if anyone can also help with the draft.
- This leads to this question: Could anyone else edit someone else's draft? Clay2004 (talk) 19:19, 15 March 2024 (UTC)
- Clay, yes, any editor can edit a draft. But I wanted to clarify something. I get the sense that you are more interested in writing about this character "in-universe". On Wikipedia, an article about a character needs to have mainly out-of-universe context with only in-universe context to support that. Have you considered looking at the Hotel Transylvania Wiki, if you haven't already, if you're interested in just what happens in the films? Here is the page for Dennis there. Erik (talk | contrib) (ping me) 19:23, 15 March 2024 (UTC)
- Well Erik, I'm trying a mix of both, the trouble is the out-of-universe context. However, I'm trying my best to do so. Sometimes, I might need some time and figure out how to put in the out-of-text context. For example, for a section about reception of the character as a whole, I need to add separate reviews from reviewers and all that.
- Plus, I would need to verify the sources, which isn't hard. But these source alone aren't bad either, it's just how to "phrase them" is the issue. Clay2004 (talk) 19:31, 15 March 2024 (UTC)

Discussion about Kino's inclusion on List of fictional non-binary characters page
Presently there is a discussion here about whether Kino, the protagonist in Kino's Journey, should be included on the page listing non-binary characters (including all those which fall under the non-binary umbrella). I've responded the the original post, which asked in part, "Can someone familiar with this character please clear up the confusion? How is Kino's gender identity best described?", and challenged Kino's inclusion on the page, among other comments. However, your views would also be useful in this discussion. Draft:Antón Castillo
Dear WikiProject members,
I was just wondering whether any members of this WikiProject would consider contributing to a draft article about Antón Castillo, the central antagonist of Far Cry 6. The draft is still in its early stages, but it has potential to reach a quality standard, similar to the articles of the antagonists of Far Cry 3–5: Vaas Montenegro, Pagan Min and Joseph Seed. So far I have had very little experience in editing fictional character articles, so I was hoping that a few editors here may be able to lend a hand.
If you are interested, please indicate this with a short message below, or simply start contributing to the draft. :)

Assistance for Michael Myers
Hi everyone,
Michael Myers (Halloween) is under GA review at the moment. Does anyone have some time to go over to help address some of the issues with the page, as mentioned in the GAR on the talk page? I'm very swamped in real life and don't have the time to spend to go through the page and clean up some of the irrelevance that has crept in, as well as expand on some sections (e.g., reception). So, I'm hoping some film/horror enthusiasts, or just some willing editors with more time, can help out. Any help is appreciated. Thank you. BIGNOLE (Contact me) 14:08, 5 May 2024 (UTC)

Article dispute
Hello! I was wondering if I could get some help. I spent the last two weeks editing Princess Leia, but another user feels that I've drastically altered the page in a negative way. The article John Sheppard (Stargate) has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
Consists of naught but plot summary, without a single reliable secondary source, for its entire 19.24-year history.
While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}}
notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.
Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}}
will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. — Fourthords | =Λ= | 04:05, 23 June 2024 (UTC)
Restructuring of Transformers character articles
Taking a look at the articles for some of the Transformers franchise, it's obvious that all of them have pretty big issues, being primarily just biographies of all the various iterations of a given character that exist across the Transformers media; films, cartoons, comics, games, etc. No information on these characters in terms of their creation, development in given media, or a critical response to these characters or their popularity. Clearly, a restructuring is needed for all these pages. My question is this. Which format should be followed?
The problem with the Transformers franchise is that it is a multi-media and multi-continuity franchise. I did consider something akin to the Iron Man or Captain America articles. Both of these characters, as with many others from Marvel/DC, have appeared in various continuities, in "what-if" comics and non-comics media. With such characters, despite their various incarnations, the articles themselves are always about the MAIN version of the character. Earth-616 for Marvel, the main universe for DC; whether thats Earth-Two, One, New, or Prime.
But one issue with that is that unlike characters from the Big Two where you can argue that the mainstream comics version of the characters is the main one, Transformers doesn't really have a truly "main" universe. Would it be where the characters first showed up? Whether it's the 80s cartoon, the movies, comics, or something else? To "solve" this problem, I did consider the character pages from the Neon Genesis Evangelion and Fate/stay night franchises. In pages like Kaworu Nagisa or Asuka Langley Soryu for example, the "Conception" and "Reception" sections does in a way focus on their representation in the series, but do also include some info on other appearances.
However, the issue with following that approach is deciding on which of the various films, cartoons, comics, and games to include in things like "Development", "Reception", and "Popularity"; and, of course, the "Biography" section. So, any thoughts on how the character pages of a highly significant franchise - with this being a problem across character pages of the entire franchise - should be improved upon?
