Arab world articles have been selected for the Wikipedia 0.8 release

Version 0.8 is a collection of Wikipedia articles selected by the Wikipedia 1.0 team for offline release on USB key, DVD and mobile phone. Articles were selected based on their assessed importance and quality, then article versions (revisionIDs) were chosen for trustworthiness (freedom from vandalism) using an adaptation of the WikiTrust algorithm.

We would like to ask you to review the Arab world articles and revisionIDs we have chosen. Selected articles are marked with a diamond symbol (♦) to the right of each article, and this symbol links to the selected version of each article. If you believe we have included or excluded articles inappropriately, please contact us at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8 with the details. You may wish to look at your WikiProject's articles with cleanup tags and try to improve any that need work; if you do, please give us the new revisionID at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8. We would like to complete this consultation period by midnight UTC on Monday, October 11th.

We have greatly streamlined the process since the Version 0.7 release, so we aim to have the collection ready for distribution by the end of October, 2010. As a result, we are planning to distribute the collection much more widely, while continuing to work with groups such as One Laptop per Child and Wikipedia for Schools to extend the reach of Wikipedia worldwide. Please help us, with your WikiProject's feedback!

Need some help on a category rename

Please direct your attention to Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2010 November 30#Category:Arabian people of Persian_descent where it is proposed to rename it to Category:Arab people of Iranian descent. I have concerns about what "Arabian people" means in this context which thus far haven't been addressed adequately. The members of the category seem to be included on the basis of several contradictory interpretations. Mangoe (talk) 18:30, 3 December 2010 (UTC)

Featured article review for Yom Kippur War

I have nominated Yom Kippur War for a featured article review here. Please join the discussion on whether this article meets featured article criteria. Articles are typically reviewed for two weeks. If substantial concerns are not addressed during the review period, the article will be moved to the Featured Article Removal Candidates list for a further period, where editors may declare "Keep" or "Delist" the article's featured status. The instructions for the review process are here. Brad (talk) 14:01, 28 September 2011 (UTC)

The article Islah (concept) has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

The corresponding Dab contains the only encyclopedia-worthy content this article has seen in its more than six years' existence. If its prose content can be expanded beyond a dictdef, it's high time to do so.

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Is Salwa al Mutairi a notable Kuwaiti, or someone who got a lot of news for one comment?

If Salwa al Mutairi is a notable person, then there should be more in the article about her than a single controversial comment. If she was only in the news for one controversial comment, then Wikipedia is not the news, and the article should probably be nominated for deletion. But I don't read Arabic, which makes it difficult for me to be sure I've fairly reviewed the best available sources. WikiWomen's History Month

Hi everyone. March is Women's History Month and I'm hoping a few folks here at WP:Arab world will have interest in putting on events (on and off wiki) related to women's roles in Arab history, society and culture. We've created an event page on English Wikipedia (please translate!) and I hope you'll find the inspiration to participate. These events can take place off wiki, like edit-a-thons, or on wiki, such as themes and translations. Please visit the page here: WikiWomen's History Month. Leaflet for Wikiproject Arab World at Wikimania 2014

Hi all,

My name is Adi Khajuria and I am helping out with Wikimania 2014 in London.

One of our initiatives is to create leaflets to increase the discoverability of various wikimedia projects, and showcase the breadth of activity within wikimedia. Any kind of project can have a physical paper leaflet designed - for free - as a tool to help recruit new contributors. These leaflets will be printed at Wikimania 2014, and the designs can be re-used in the future at other events and locations.

This is particularly aimed at highlighting less discoverable but successful projects, e.g:

• Active Wikiprojects: Wikiproject Medicine, WikiProject Video Games, Wikiproject Film

• Tech projects/Tools, which may be looking for either users or developers.

• Less known major projects: Wikinews, Wikidata, Wikivoyage, etc.

• Wiki Loves Parliaments, Wiki Loves Monuments, Wiki Loves ____

• Wikimedia thematic organisations, Wikiwomen’s Collaborative, The Signpost

The deadline for submissions is 1st July 2014

For more information or to sign up for one for your project, go to:

Google's private foundation has offered to provide support to several non-English Wikipedias, including the Arabic Wikipedia. (See this announcement.) Forty medicine- or health-related articles, some of particular interest to developing countries, have been identified as targets. The English-language articles will be translated, and we'd like to give the translators some good articles!

I think that it would be particularly helpful if some of these articles were expanded to make them more global/more obviously applicable to non-English-speaking countries. For example, recreational drug use contains prevalence information for Ireland and the US, but no other countries.

If you are interested in helping with this, please consider adding Wikipedia:WikiProject Medicine/Google Project to your watchlist, improving these articles, and/or contributing advice at the talk page. Thanks, WhatamIdoing (talk) 17:58, 4 May 2010 (UTC)

Move to replace the word "Arabs" in Wikipedia categories

I feel I should bring to the attention of your members the fact that, following the wholesale renaming of as number of container categories earlier this year, including, I believe, the replacement of the container category "Arabs" with Category:Arab people, there appears to be a move to replace the perfectly legitimate noun "Arabs" with the innocuous term, "Arab people", throughout the Wikipedia categories (if the way the issue has been dealt with in similar cases in anything to go by). A similar move to replace "Jews" with "Jewish people" was overturned. As part of this process, there is presently a proposal here at Speedy renaming to replace Category:Iranian Arabs with Category:Iranian Arab people. Davshul (talk) 13:11, 18 July 2010 (UTC)

About the war museum "Tourist Landmark of the Resistance" in Lebanon, operated by Hezbollah. Template:2010–2011 Middle East and North Africa protests

The 2011 Bahrain Grand Prix has been added and removed from this template a couple of times now. Although the GP was not part of the protests, its cancellation was a direct result of the protests. As such, I believe that it should remain on the template. Therefore, I'm opening the discussion here as I believe it would get more input than the discussion on the template's talk page. I will inform WP:F1 of this discussion. Mjroots (talk) 12:41, 8 June 2011 (UTC)

Here from WP:F1. I can't see any reason why the Grand Prix article should be in the template. This is an already lengthy template packed with incredibly important articles at the core of the protests. If you want to get into the effects of the protests then there's probably hundreds of articles equally important as 2011 Bahrain Grand Prix, if not more so. Doesn't meet the grade, in my opinion. Apterygial talk 12:57, 8 June 2011 (UTC)
I would say that should consensus be that the article shouldn't be in the template, then the template shouldn't be on the article. It can stay for now, until a consensus is formed. Mjroots (talk) 13:45, 8 June 2011 (UTC)

Request for help finding Nuran EMT

Hi, The article Hatzalah has a mention in the "interaction with other agencies" section about an East J-lem EMT group called Nuran. Currently the only WP article for Nuran is about a village in Azerbaijan. As far as I can tell, there is no page about the organization in English, Hebrew, or Arabic. I'm happy to create one but I have been unable to find even a mention of this group. I assume that most sources are in Arabic which I do not read. Can editors here help out to find sources or mentions for this group. If we can't find even a mention of it we should probably remove the line from the Hatzalah article as well, as the group may not exist and just be a long-standing error. Experienced editors with specialist regional knowledge urgently wanted

The Arbitration Committee is seeking to appoint additional people to the CheckUser and Oversight teams, in particular people with specialist knowledge.

Because of increasing activity in the South Asian, Southeast Asian, or Middle Eastern regions, CheckUser applications are particularly sought from people who not only meet our general requirements but also are familiar with the ISPs and typical editing patterns of any of these regions.

Successful candidates are likely to be regularly available and already familiar with local and global processes, policies, and guidelines especially those concerning CheckUser and Oversight. CheckUser candidates are expected to be technically proficient, and previous experience with OTRS is beneficial for Oversight candidates. All candidates must at least 18 years of age; have attained legal majority in their jurisdiction of residence; and be willing to identify to the Wikimedia Foundation prior to receiving permissions. If you think you may be suitably qualified, please see the appointments page for further information. The application period is scheduled to close 18 September 2011.  Roger Davies talk 15:47, 16 September 2011 (UTC)

Initially I checked the Yemen maps on Wikipedia, and, after I got a reply from User:Middayexpress, I was almost ready to submit a request for the corrections of a great many maps, assuming the Yemen maps, Kenya, Mauritius, Somalia and Location Benin AU Africa all had the correct borderline, but then I found out that the Saudi Arabia maps on Wikipedia were displaying the borderline the other way too. --Theurgist (talk) 23:00, 12 January 2012 (UTC)

New 'Women in the Arab Spring' article

I'm planning on writing a new 'Women in the Arab Spring' article as part of my Poverty, Gender and Human Development course at Rice University. I will add the page to this WikiProject because the Arab Spring represents a major change in the Arab world. The topic of women in the Arab Spring is not currently discussed in the Arab Spring article or anywhere else on Wikipedia. I plan to cover the role of women before, during, and after the Arab Spring with my article (see the Arab Spring talk page for details) and would greatly appreciate any feedback on my plans. Thanks! Thanks for your feedback! The article will include information about the new governments' impact on the status of women, so I will definitely discuss the rise of Islamist parties. Help needed to improve language support in CS1 citations

I am looking for help to guide language support improvements to Citation Style 1 templates. For the time being, these improvements are limited to titles of reference sources, |title= and |trans-title= in CS1 citations that italicize these parameter values.

There have long been complaints that certain languages should not be italicized. A discussion at Module talk:Citation/CS1/Archive 11#non-italic titles regarding titles in Chinese with pinyin transliterations, and English translations just looked wrong. The commonly applied fixes that make the title look right end up damaging the citation's COinS metadata. So, a better way needs to be found.

A possible solution is hacked into Module:Citation/CS1. The hack creates a new parameter, |logogram=|script-title=, which for now is intended to receive titles in script that is not to be italicized. Here is an example of what a citation should not look like:

Wang, Li (1985). Hànyǔ Yǔyīn Shǐ 汉语语音史 (in Chinese). Beijing: China Social Sciences Press. ISBN 978-7-100-05390-7. {{cite book}}: Unknown parameter |trans_title= ignored (|trans-title= suggested) (help)

and the same citation with |logogram=|script-title=:

Wang, Li (1985). Hànyǔ Yǔyīn Shǐ 汉语语音史 (in Chinese). Beijing: China Social Sciences Press. ISBN 978-7-100-05390-7. {{cite book}}: Invalid |script-title=: missing prefix (help); Unknown parameter |trans_title= ignored (|trans-title= suggested) (help)

Another improvement to CS1 language support that we are contemplating is better handling of right-to-left (rtl) languages. This arises from a discussion now in WP:VPT archive 129. Again, the workarounds necessary to make the citation render correctly corrupt the COinS metadata.

Another hack to CS1 that uses |logogram=|script-title= to hold the Hebrew title appears to correctly render that citation's title.

Tova Green (6 May 2010). 12 ימים (in Hebrew). Maybe So. Retrieved 15 May 2010. {{cite book}}: Unknown parameter |trans_title= ignored (|trans-title= suggested) (help) – current live version of {{cite book}}
Tova Green (6 May 2010). 12 ימים (in Hebrew). Maybe So. Retrieved 15 May 2010. {{cite book}}: Invalid |script-title=: missing prefix (help); Unknown parameter |trans_title= ignored (|trans-title= suggested) (help) – current sandbox version

I don't know if titles in Hebrew should be italicized; I don't know if titles should be displayed <original language> <romanized transcription> [<English translation>] or in some other order.

Opinions? Comments? Questions? Brickbats?

languages that should not be italicized in CS1 citations → Module talk:Citation/CS1/Archive 11#non-italic titles

Comment on the WikiProject X proposal

Hello there! As you may already know, most WikiProjects here on Wikipedia struggle to stay active after they've been founded. I believe there is a lot of potential for WikiProjects to facilitate collaboration across subject areas, so I have submitted a grant proposal with the Wikimedia Foundation for the "WikiProject X" project. WikiProject X will study what makes WikiProjects succeed in retaining editors and then design a prototype WikiProject system that will recruit contributors to WikiProjects and help them run effectively. Please review the proposal here and leave feedback. If you have any questions, you can ask on the proposal page or leave a message on my talk page. Thank you for your time! (Also, sorry about the posting mistake earlier. If someone already moved my message to the talk page, feel free to remove this posting.) Harej (talk) 22:47, 1 October 2014 (UTC)

We have a new editor who keeps adding in Wikipedia's voice that the tribe is the largest and most influential Arab tribe with up to 5 million members. It did say 'one of the largest', but he's changed that twice. User:Cwobeel, User:George Ho, you both have posted here recently. I'm guessing that the biggest family meeting stuff may be from [12] which is a collection of our articles. It may of course be correct, but I can't find another source. Dougweller (talk) 19:23, 14 November 2014 (UTC)

Sorry, I'm not an expert on Arab world. I was here to bring people attention. As far as I see, the article still needs further sources. --George Ho (talk) 19:29, 14 November 2014 (UTC)

Ar wiki categories

It was decided at Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2014 July 1 to merge, in the English wikipedia, Category:Economy of Arab world to Category:Economy of the Arab League.

The equivalent categories in Arabic wikipedia still exist, and overlap substantially. I suggest that perhaps someone here might take action to merge them: ar:تصنيف:اقتصاد_جامعة_الدول_العربية and ar:تصنيف:اقتصاد_الوطن_العربي.

If you could make the same proposal in Farsi wikipedia as well for fa:رده:اقتصاد_اتحادیه_عرب and fa:رده:اقتصاد_جهان_عرب, so much the better. – Fayenatic London 20:33, 14 November 2014 (UTC)

WikiProject X is live!

Hello everyone!

You may have received a message from me earlier asking you to comment on my WikiProject X proposal. The good news is that WikiProject X is now live! In our first phase, we are focusing on research. At this time, we are looking for people to share their experiences with WikiProjects: good, bad, or neutral. We are also looking for WikiProjects that may be interested in trying out new tools and layouts that will make participating easier and projects easier to maintain. If you or your WikiProject are interested, check us out! Note that this is an opt-in program; no WikiProject will be required to change anything against its wishes. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you!

Note: To receive additional notifications about WikiProject X on this talk page, please add this page to Wikipedia:WikiProject X/Newsletter. Otherwise, this will be the last notification sent about WikiProject X.

Since it plays a role in the contentious discussions about the Cologne NYE events, both in deWP and the enWP, I would like to have a statement from experts about the different interpretations in Egypt. Iraq War

Recently consensus was reached in this discussion to restructure the Iraq War article into an broader article for the entire war from 2003 to the present and to move Iraqi insurgency (2003–11) to Iraq War (2003–11) so that page can serve as the article for the 2003–11 phase of the war.

There is much work that needs to be done. Not just the changes to these two articles agreed to in the discussion. But also all the pages that will be affected by these changes (such as 2003 invasion of Iraq, Iraqi insurgency (2003–06), Sectarian violence in Iraq (2006–07), Iraqi insurgency (2011–13), Iraqi Civil War (2014–present), Military intervention against ISIL, American-led intervention in Iraq (2014–present), Iranian intervention in Iraq (2014–present), Syrian civil war, ect.). I am requesting assistance. Charles Essie (talk) 01:16, 12 July 2016 (UTC)

MEMRI

Hello.

Would members of this community please help me improve the Middle East Media Research Institute page? I work for the organization and have been tasked with representing it on Wikipedia. I made this account to submit recommendations for updates, which I've done on the talk page. My last message contained a new draft for the "Projects" section for editors to work with. There's been one response to it, but I'd like some other points of view. Thank you. R at MEMRI (talk) 18:31, 10 January 2017 (UTC)

Photos of Syria on Wikimedia Commons

For years, Syria has been the scene of a bloody civil war resulting in hundreds of thousands of deaths, millions of refugees, and the destruction of entire cities. The recent image donation by the Nationaal Museum van Wereldculturen (the National Museum of World Cultures) in the Netherlands shows another Syria. Many of these photos were taken in the 1980s and show scenes of daily life and images and cities not yet devastated by war. Other images show objects from the collection of the museum. Together, they form a valuable resource on Syria for the various Wikimedia projects. The upload consists of 352 photos in total and can be accessed here. It coincides with a photo exhibition in the NMvW on Aleppo. The upload was part of the project The Netherlands and the World, which aims to make accessible Dutch collections on non-European heritage. Was the removal of content about Arab/Levantine passengers from the Titanic justified?

Please see this talk page section Talk:Passengers_of_the_RMS_Titanic#Was_the_removal_of_info_on_Arab.2FLevantine_passengers_sourced_from_Al_Arabiya_justified.3F on whether the removal of content about Arab/Levantine passengers from the Titanic justified. In particular: is it necessary that information on the demographic makeup of the Levantine/Arab passengers come from a formal historian, or would an Al Arabiya news article be enough?

Bahamut

I would like to have help or see participation in the related articles on Bahamut and Kujata (mythology). I gave it my shot web-researching, but I can't read Arabic so I'm getting stumped.

Specifically, I would like to have verification on the Arabic for "Balhūt" (apparently given in Yaqut and Ibn al-Wardi), and maybe locate the correct URL for p. 36-37 on the Arabic text vs. Latin translation edition ?

I linked to page "٣‎٦" but it might be "page 36" which spans about four pages till it reaches "page 37". --Kiyoweap (talk) 01:16, 20 October 2017 (UTC)

Template for requesting Arabic-language version of something?

We don't seem to have an "{{Arabic needed}}" equivalent of {{Romanization needed}}. I encounter things like "lisān al-`uṣfūr" at articles like Orzo, and want to flag them as needing the original Arabic version before the romanized transliteration.  — SMcCandlish ¢ >ʌⱷ҅ʌ<  08:08, 23 October 2017 (UTC)

Wikipedia has many thousands of wikilinks which point to disambiguation pages. It would be useful to readers if these links directed them to the specific pages of interest, rather than making them search through a list. Members of WikiProject Disambiguation have been working on this and the total number is now below 20,000 for the first time. Some of these links require specialist knowledge of the topics concerned and therefore it would be great if you could help in your area of expertise.

Anti-Arabism

I'm inviting the members of this project to weigh in on a row between me and User:יניב_הורון at the Anti-Arabism page. WikiProject collaboration notice from the Portals WikiProject

The reason I am contacting you is because there are one or more portals that fall under this subject, and the Portals WikiProject is currently undertaking a major drive to automate portals that may affect them.

Portals are being redesigned.

The new design features are being applied to existing portals.

At present, we are gearing up for a maintenance pass of portals in which the introduction section will be upgraded to no longer need a subpage. In place of static copied and pasted excerpts will be self-updating excerpts displayed through selective transclusion, using the template {{Transclude lead excerpt}}.

The discussion about this can be found here.

Maintainers of specific portals are encouraged to sign up as project members here, noting the portals they maintain, so that those portals are skipped by the maintenance pass. Currently, we are interested in upgrading neglected and abandoned portals. There will be opportunity for maintained portals to opt-in later, or the portal maintainers can handle upgrading (the portals they maintain) personally at any time.

Background

On April 8th, 2018, an RfC ("Request for comment") proposal was made to eliminate all portals and the portal namespace. On April 17th, the Portals WikiProject was rebooted to handle the revitalization of the portal system. On May 12th, the RfC was closed with the result to keep portals, by a margin of about 2 to 1 in favor of keeping portals.

There's an article in the current edition of the Signpost interviewing project members about the RfC and the Portals WikiProject.

Since the reboot, the Portals WikiProject has been busy building tools and components to upgrade portals.

So far, 84 editors have joined.

If you would like to keep abreast of what is happening with portals, see the newsletter archive.

If you have any questions about what is happening with portals or the Portals WikiProject, please post them on the WikiProject's talk page.

Thank you.    — The Transhumanist   07:25, 30 May 2018 (UTC)

I happened upon the article Bader Al Essa. From my point of view, the text of the article fails to indicate why this person might be notable; I am not familiar with the "works" he mentions and they do not appear to have wikipedia articles either. Not being a reader of Arabic, I am unable to investigate this further in a meaningful way. Could someone with greater expertise in this area take a look at this article? THank you. Request for information on WP1.0 web tool

Hello and greetings from the maintainers of the WP 1.0 Bot! As you may or may not know, we are currently involved in an overhaul of the bot, in order to make it more modern and maintainable. As part of this process, we will be rewriting the web tool that is part of the project. You might have noticed this tool if you click through the links on the project assessment summary tables.

We'd like to collect information on how the current tool is used by....you! How do you yourself and the other maintainers of your project use the web tool? Which of its features do you need? How frequently do you use these features? And what features is the tool missing that would be useful to you? We have collected all of these questions at this Google form where you can leave your response. Walkerma (talk) 04:23, 27 October 2019 (UTC)

Update to peer review page

Hi all, I've boldly updated your project's peer review page (Wikipedia:WikiProject Arab world/Review) by updating the instructions and archiving old reviews.

The new instructions use Wikipedia's general peer review process (WP:PR) to list peer reviews. Your project's reviews are still able to be listed on your local page too.

The benefits of this change is that review requests will get seen by a wider audience and are likely to be attended to in a more timely way (many WikiProject peer reviews remain unanswered after years). The Wikipedia peer review process is also more maintained than most WikiProjects, and this may help save time for your active members.

I've done this boldly as it seems your peer review page is pretty inactive and I am working through around 90 such similar peer review pages. Please feel free to discuss below - please ping me ({{u|Tom (LT)}}) in your response.

Cheers and hope you are well, Tom (LT) (talk) 00:37, 15 November 2020 (UTC)

Sandbox Organiser

A place to help you organise your work

Hi all

I've been working on a tool for the past few months that you may find useful. Wikipedia:Sandbox organiser is a set of tools to help you better organise your draft articles and other pages in your userspace. It also includes areas to keep your to do lists, bookmarks, list of tools. You can customise your sandbox organiser to add new features and sections. Once created you can access it simply by clicking the sandbox link at the top of the page. You can create and then customise your own sandbox organiser just by clicking the button on the page. All ideas for improvements and other versions would be really appreciated.

Huge thanks to PrimeHunter and NavinoEvans for their work on the technical parts, without them it wouldn't have happened.

WikiProject Arabic and WikiProject Arab world

Given that Wikipedia:WikiProject Arabic has as an explicit goal "improving articles about topics in the Arabic world", and that work in Wikipedia:WikiProject Arab world often makes use of Arabic language expertise and translators, it seems like these two projects have more or less the same scope. I was thinking that putting all the participants and notification pages and whatnot into a single pool might streamline things and boost communication and cooperation. Any thoughts? -- Beland (talk) 06:44, 10 March 2021 (UTC)

Then Arab World would be the more inclusive project, since "Arabic" refers to the language. FunkMonk (talk) 08:06, 10 March 2021 (UTC)
Merge into Wikiproject Arab World. If in the future a proper Arabic-focused Wikiproject is initiated it can always be separated into its own. DA1 (talk) 20:08, 11 March 2021 (UTC)

Hello friends. I recently draftified Draft:Mohammed Ajam. The article creator posted on my talk page asking for help from Arabic speakers, so I figured I'd leave a note here. Feel free to help with improving verifiability and inline citations. Also feel free to move it back to mainspace if you disagree with the draftification. Thanks. –Novem Linguae (talk) 08:20, 13 April 2021 (UTC)

Merging

History before the 20th century is common, and there were no states such as "Lebanon", "Jordan", "Qatar"... I think it would be better if we merge these articles History of Lebanon, History of Jordan and related templates:Template:History of Lebanon, Template:History of Jordan into articles by regions rather than states, like: Lebanon+Jordan+Syria=History of Syria/Levant, Qatar/Saudi Arabia/Oman: History of Arabia. We can keep those articles to talk about only the history of these states after their establishment. -- Maudslay II (talk) 09:33, 21 April 2021 (UTC)

Doesn't make much sense, since we need articles that cover their modern histories as well. And such articles should logically also cover what happened in these territories prior to independence. Countries like Italy and Germany weren't single states either until relatively recently, but I don't think you'd find support for removing info about their pre-unification history either. FunkMonk (talk) 09:56, 21 April 2021 (UTC)
We would keep the related stuff, but things that are general and shared shouldn't be attributed to a single country. -- Maudslay II (talk) 12:47, 21 April 2021 (UTC)
Then it's more an issue of identifying and discussing specific text. But for any history about a country article, you have to go into the history of its corresponding region before becoming a modern state. Before modern Germany, there were a myriad of princely states, and some of these are not even part of modern Germany, such as most of what was Prussia. Shouldn't they be discussed in the history of Germany article? FunkMonk (talk) 12:58, 21 April 2021 (UTC)

Hi all. Hope this is the right place for this. I recently found an article translated from the Arabic wiki into English, and the translation has... very embarrassing issues. However, I don't speak Arabic, and the original editor has been inactive since 2013, so I was wondering whether anyone could help with the names. Thanks in advance. A merge has been proposed by User:Beland few months back but it seems they forgot to start a discussion. Here it is, I support it at least as far as redirecting one talk page to another goes - both WikiProjects seem nearly dead, might as well try to breath a spark of life into them by having one, not two, discussion pages. Overlapping/Redundant Categories for Lexicographers

Hello: I've been cleaning up various social science categories, and when I was going thru Category:Lexicographers I discovered the following two categories: Category:Arab lexicographers‎ and Category:Lexicographers of Arabic‎ (which I cat-sorted to display under "Arabic‎" right after the other Category). Obviously there is a technical distinction between the two; however I am having a hard time believing that there is actually a substantive difference in the real world. In other words (no pun intended), have there actually been notable Arab lexicographers‎ whose focus was on some language other than Arabic‎?? Or would it make sense to merge these two categories? P.S. Please be sure to Ping me when you reply. Thanks! Anomalous+0 (talk) 08:39, 26 September 2021 (UTC)

User script to detect unreliable sources

I have (with the help of others) made a small user script to detect and highlight various links to unreliable sources and predatory journals. Some of you may already be familiar with it, given it is currently the 39th most imported script on Wikipedia. The idea is that it takes something like

  • John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14. (John Smith "[https://www.deprecated.com/article Article of things]" ''Deprecated.com''. Accessed 2020-02-14.)

and turns it into something like

It will work on a variety of links, including those from {{cite web}}, {{cite journal}} and {{doi}}.

The script is mostly based on WP:RSPSOURCES, WP:NPPSG and WP:CITEWATCH and a good dose of common sense. I'm always expanding coverage and tweaking the script's logic, so general feedback and suggestions to expand coverage to other unreliable sources are always welcomed.

Do note that this is not a script to be mindlessly used, and several caveats apply. Details and instructions are available at User:Headbomb/unreliable. Questions, comments and requests can be made at User talk:Headbomb/unreliable.

Naglaa Mahfouz needs reference help

Naglaa Mahfouz, the Egyptian journalist/writer/artist is up for deletion - it looks like one of those cases where someone inherently quite notable doesn't have much coverage in English-language sources, could someone who knows Arabic help out? Does the term Al-Aqsa Mosque need disambiguation?

Al Aqsa Mosque (the large compound) vs Al Aqsa Mosque (the small southern building, from where prayers are led)
300,000 worshippers at the Al Aqsa Mosque (the large compound), facing the Al Aqsa Mosque (the small southern building, from where prayers are led)

Please comment at Talk:Al-Aqsa Mosque#Requested move 30 May 2022 - we are in need of editors who have the time to review the sources. Our Al-Aqsa Mosque article is about the small building. The large compound, also known as Al-Aqsa Mosque, is our article Temple Mount.

For reference:

  • Al Aqsa Mosque (Temple Mount) is the third holiest site in Islam
  • Al Aqsa Mosque (Temple Mount) was the first qibla in Islam
  • Al Aqsa Mosque (Temple Mount) gave its name to the Al Aqsa Intifada, and the al-Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades
  • Al Aqsa Mosque (Temple Mount) can hold over 300,000 people (note: the small building can hold only 5,000)
  • Al Aqsa Mosque (Temple Mount) was recently in the news after clashes between Israeli soldiers and Palestinians: the location of the route is shown here
  • Al Aqsa Mosque (building) is an important monument of early Islamic architecture
  • Al Aqsa Mosque (building) houses the Imam of the Al Aqsa Mosque
  • Al Aqsa Mosque (building) is where the Islamic prayers are led from

Per WP:PRIMARYTOPIC, what matters most is whether it is highly likely — much more likely than any other single topic, and more likely than all the other topics combined — to be the topic sought when a reader searches for that term. It is also important to assess how the term is used amongst scholarly sources - an assessment of this has been provided at the discussion, and it would be good to have it confirmed by editors who have the time to review the sources themselves.

Thank you.

Gate identification help

Hey, someone uploaded this image to Commons, claiming it depicts Jerusalem's Lions' Gate some time in the late 1960s. Except it doesn't, numerous details do not fit. So the question is, what does it actually show? Users on Hebrew wiki have pointed out that Lions or Leopards are popular motifs of Sultan Baybars or Lebanon's Shihab dynasty. Recently I have been seeing claims that the modern-day inhabitants of North Africa are the descendants of invaders and that the indigenous people of North Africa are actually "Black Africans" that were forcibly removed, and that all of the accomplishments of North Africa before the spread of Islam were made by said "Black Africans". I know that these claims are (probably) untrue, but the frequency of these claims appearing before me is high enough for me to look if there was a Wikipedia article on it. Is this topic notable enough to make into an article, especially with the recent backlash these claims have made in Egypt with Kevin Hart's show being cancelled and Netflix being sued for its portrayal of Cleopatra as a Black woman? Also, if there is something I'm wrong about in this post please tell me, I'm not too knowledgeable in this subject. – Treetoes023 (talk) 14:44, 8 May 2023 (UTC)

I think these issues are already covered in specific articles about populations and historical figures. There's even a dedicated Cleopatra race controversy article. The fact that North Africans have unique DNA that separates them from both the Middle East and sub-Saharan Africa should also be a pointer that they're their own thing, and is already mentioned in various articles. FunkMonk (talk) 14:50, 8 May 2023 (UTC)
@FunkMonk: I did not know that this issue was already partially covered in some articles, thank you for telling me. Although, I do believe that this topic does has enough merit to be its own article where it can be covered to its full extent. For example, I do not think that the origin of this claim has been covered in other articles, and I'm sure there is more information that is not covered in any article. Theoretically, if this topic were to become an article, the biggest problem would be that I do not know what the name for it would be. – Treetoes023 (talk) 15:04, 8 May 2023 (UTC)
There is also stuff like Ancient Egyptian race controversy, as for a wider article, I think most of it is already covered in the Afrocentrism article. FunkMonk (talk) 15:09, 8 May 2023 (UTC)
@FunkMonk: Okay, I'll research the topic further and look around Wikipedia to see if there is any information not covered in any article and if the information on the topic is large enough for its own article instead of being contained inside of the Afrocentrism article. – Treetoes023 (talk) 15:17, 8 May 2023 (UTC)

Al-Aqsa Mosque compound

I have taken the long overdue step of creating an Al-Aqsa Mosque compound page to encompass the full architectural history of Al-Aqsa all in one place. This was not done previously, with there being separate articles for the Dome of the Rock, Al-Aqsa Mosque and Minarets of the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound, etc., but no single page drawing them all together historically and architecturally. The temple mount page provides some architectural overview, but it is so bound up in narrating the full history of the site and is substructure (so much so that it uses the 'mountain' infobox template, not the 'religious building' one) that it has never done full credit to the actual superstructure. Now there is a page that ties it all together. Iskandar323 (talk) 09:08, 25 July 2023 (UTC)

FYI, Arabic International Phonetic Alphabet has been proposed for deletion (WP:PROD). Right now, the article needs reliable sources to support the subject's notability.

If you agree or disagree with deletion, there are instructions on the deletion notice for what to do.

Women in Green's 5th Edit-a-thon

Hello WikiProject Arab world:

WikiProject Women in Green is holding a month-long Good Article Edit-a-thon event in October 2023!

Running from October 1 to 31, 2023, WikiProject Women in Green (WiG) is hosting a Good Article (GA) edit-a-thon event with the theme Around the World in 31 Days! All experience levels welcome. Never worked on a GA project before? We'll teach you how to get started. Or maybe you're an old hand at GAs – we'd love to have you involved! Participants are invited to work on nominating and/or reviewing GA submissions related to women and women's works (e.g., books, films) during the event period. We hope to collectively cover article subjects from at least 31 countries (or broader international articles) by month's end. GA resources and one-on-one support will be provided by experienced GA editors, and participants will have the opportunity to earn a special WiG barnstar for their efforts.

We hope to see you there!
