Wikipedia:WikiProject Netherlands/Dutch municipalities task force/Templates
This page describes commonly used templates and their recommended use for articles within the scope of the Dutch municipalities task force. The advice can be applied equally well to municipal articles as to other populated places articles.
Infobox settlements
[edit]The Infobox settlement produces an infobox for settlements and can be used in articles for both municipal as other populated places. A full description is available on the template page, only the parts mostly used for Dutch municipality or populated places are discussed here.
Example

How to use it
[edit]The following code can be copied to the article edit screen (it should occur before the text in the Lead section) and filled out. Note that some other fields may be filled as well, try to maintain the order as listed in Infobox settlement as much as possible when you incorporate such items for optimal clarity for other editors. Because of the complexity and the abundance of items, it might be good to try to finish the infobox in your sandbox before copying it to the article itself.
{{Infobox settlement <!-- See Template:Infobox settlement for additional fields and descriptions --> <!-- Name and transliteration --> | name = XX_place_XX | settlement_type = Municipality <!-- Images, nickname, motto --> | image_skyline = | image_alt = | image_caption = | image_flag = | flag_size = 100x67px | flag_alt = | image_shield = | shield_size = 100x80px | shield_alt = <!-- Maps, coordinates --> | image_map = | map_alt = Highlighted position of XX_place_XX in a municipal map of XX_Province_XX | map_caption = Location in XX_Province_XX | coordinates = <!-- Location, established, seat, subdivisions, government, leaders--> | subdivision_type = Country | subdivision_name = Netherlands | subdivision_type1 = Province | subdivision_name1 = XX_Province_XX | government_footnotes = | governing_body = Municipal council | leader_party = | leader_title = Mayor | leader_name = <!-- Geographic information --> | unit_pref = Metric <!-- ALL fields with measurements have automatic unit conversion --> <!-- for references: use <!-- square kilometers --> | area_total_km2 = XX_place_XX | area_land_km2 = XX_place_XX | area_water_km2 = XX_place_XX | elevation_footnotes = | elevation_m = | elevation_max_footnotes = <!-- for references: use | population_total = XX_place_XX | population_as_of = popbaseyear | population_density_km2 = <!-- For automatic calculation: auto--> | population_demonym = <!-- Other information --> | timezone = CET | utc_offset = +1 | timezone_DST = CEST | utc_offset_DST = +2 | postal_code_type = Postcode | postal_code = | area_code_type = Area code | area_code = | twin1 = | twin1_country = | website = | footnotes = }}
Some articles already have information in place, while editing this take the following points into account:
- Wikilink items where reasonable and where a linked article exists.
- Put references between ref-tags, preferably in the appropriate footnote place.
- The name should be the name of the town/municipality with nothing else. Also use the native_name fields in case a local different official name exists, in particular for Frisian places.
- The code as is is for a municipality, in case of a different type of populated place, replace the settlement_type with either City, Town or Village for non-municipalities. If a municipality had city rights under the same name, then use City and Municipality.
- Check all the images, if there is no skyline image see whether there is a decent candidate elsewhere in the article, in other language Wikipedia's or on the commons. Also check whether the images of both the flag and the coat of arms (where applicable) are vector graphics (*.svg), if not, check whether there exists a vector graphics version on the commons. In principle do not show the municipal logo. Nicknames and motto's should only occur when they are well known and discussed and referenced in the article text.
- Use a vector graphics map (*.svg) for image_map. As of 24 February 2013 the most up to date list of these maps is available here. These are numbered with the CBS municipal code, which can be found on the CBS website. Update the XX_place_XX and XX_province_XX points accordingly. Check the coordinates, ideally they should be either city hall in a municipality or a central square in a village. Only use two decimals for these coordinates, a higher precision is not needed.
- If the article is not about a municipality then include the lines | subdivision_type2 = Municipality | subdivision_name2 = XX_place_XX as well.
- Only use the established_title and established_date if this is absolutely clear and provide a reference for this date.
- Include the mayor, preferably including reference, but not the wethouders. Those can be discussed in the article itself if needed.
- Use CBS statline or CBS statline to find the current area and population data for municipal subdivisions, the #Data templates retrieve this information for municipalities. On the website, click change selection, go to the Regio's tab and select the right place (for municipalities that have a similar named town, the top option is the municipality itself). Then go to Perioden and select the most recent date. Click Show data to get the data. Update the reference to this link with the proper dates and url. Update both the area and population information through this link.
- Use www
.ahn for the elevation data. Enter the postcode of the city hall (or central square in case of place that is not a municipality) rounded to 1 meter precision, a higher precision is not needed, because it is just an average for one postal code. If there are noteworthy maximum and minimum elevations, then use the elevation_max and/or elevation_min fields. Refer to this postcodetool for each case and denote the postal code for which you used this tool..nl /postcodetool - Enter the proper postcodes and area codes and fill out the sister cities, if applicable.
- Enter the website for the municipality when applicable.
Adjacent communities
[edit]The Adjacent communities provides a convenient compass-based navigational aid for municipalities and other populated places. It should be placed between the "External links" section and the navigation templates.
Example
[edit]An example of the use of this template, showing both how it is typed in the edit window and how it shows up in the article is shown below.

How to use it
[edit]The following code can be copied to the article edit screen (between "External links" and the navigation templates) and filled out. You can also copy it to your sandbox to try certain settings.
<!--Please note that not all directions need to be filled-->
The information can then be filled. In order to ensure consistent usage, the following guidelines are suggested:
- Centre should be the municipality or other populated place of the article.
- The other fields describe places at the same level. If the centre is a municipality, then use the adjacent municipalities. If it is a town/city/village, then use the adjacent towns/cities/villages. If the article describes both a town and municipality, then use the adjacent municipalities.
- If the municipality or populated place borders another country, then use the adjacent municipality or town/city/village in that other country.
- If there is a river, sea, lake or similar, then that should be listed in italics to differentiate it.
- Do not clutter the template with too much detail, it is just a general guide. In particular list any adjacent place only once. And only list adjacent places, it is okay to leave certain directions open.
- If the place is in another province, notate this by using the provincial ISO 3166-2 code for that province within brackets, e.g. (OV). Use the country and provincial code together when it is in Belgium or Germany. Wikilink to the proper provincial/state article as well.
Instead of a normal space use space or to ensure there is no linebreak between the town and province information. Even though it might look good on your screen it could look bad at a different screen resolution otherwise. Example: Municipalityspace(OV)
Navigation templates
[edit]Navigation templates, see WP:NAV, come at the very bottom of articles and are meant to quickly navigate to similar articles. These include navigation templates for populated places within a municipality and municipalities per province, both fall within the scope of the Dutch municipalities task force. There are other navigation templates as well that fall within the scope of this project, but these are not listed here.
Municipal navigation templates
[edit]There currently is no standardized form for municipal navigation templates. Consider the following style cues when you (re)design a municipal navigation template:
- Place the municipal flag on the left of the text in the header
- Have the header read "Populated places in Foo", where Foo is wikilinked to its municipal article.
Provincial navigation templates
[edit]There are 12 provincial navigation templates, one for each province. These have a standardized form as listed below, please maintain consistency if any changes would need to be made to them.

Template:Flevoland Province (talk, backlinks, edit):

Data templates
[edit]CBS regularly updates population and area numbers for municipalities in the Netherlands. The corresponding statistics can be easily updated on Wikipedia with a single data template for each stat. Only this template then needs to be updated for all the numbers to be updated across Wikipedia, so not every page needs to be adjusted manually. Currently this is only implemented for municipalities and not for towns, neighborhoods, etc in the following templates:
- Dutch municipality land area
- Dutch municipality population
-
- Dutch municipality total area
- Dutch municipality water area
See those templates for instructions how to use these in Wikipedia.
