Wikipedia:WikiProject Deletion sorting/Japan

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is a collection of discussions on the deletion of articles related to Japan. It is one of many deletion lists coordinated by WikiProject Deletion sorting. Anyone can help maintain the list on this page.

Adding a new AfD discussion
Adding an AfD to this page does not add it to the main page at WP:AFD. Similarly, removing an AfD from this page does not remove it from the main page at WP:AFD. If you want to nominate an article for deletion, go through the process on that page before adding it to this page. To add a discussion to this page, follow these steps:
  1. Edit this page and add {{Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/PageName}} to the top of the list. Replace "PageName" with the relevant article name, i.e. the one on the existing AFD discussion. Also, indicate the title of the article in the edit summary as it is particularly helpful to add a link to the article in the edit summary. When you save the page, the discussion will automatically appear.
  2. You should also tag the AfD by adding {{subst:delsort|Japan|~~~~}} to it, which will inform editors that it has been listed here. You may place this tag above or below the nomination statement or at the end of the discussion thread.
There are a few scripts and tools that can make this easier.
Removing a closed AfD discussion
Closed AfD discussions are automatically removed by a bot.
Other types of discussions
You can also add and remove other discussions (prod, CfD, TfD etc.) related to Japan. For the other XfD's, the process is the same as AfD (except {{Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/PageName}} is used for MFD and {{transclude xfd}} for the rest). For PRODs, adding a link with {{prodded}} will suffice.
Further information
For further information see Wikipedia's deletion policy and WP:AfD for general information about Articles for Deletion, including a list of article deletions sorted by day of nomination.

This list is also part of the larger list of deletion debates related to Asia.

Very few sources exist actually covering this guy. The article's in a weird spot where he's technically a mascot/fictional character yet also a real person. Coverage on him is sparse regardless. In English there's very little on him in Books, News, and Scholar in the way of SIGCOV, and even in Japanese it's primarily just announcements of collaborations or promotional articles and the like. The current article is primarily subsisting on trivial mentions and primary sources, with little in the way of actual notability. A potential AtD could potentially be a merge to List of Pokémon characters, but I'm admittedly unsure given his unique status. Highly promotional and of very questionable notability over a WP:SUSTAINED period. Amigao (talk) 03:22, 8 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

  • Keep Agree that the article as written seems quite promotional in tone, and it seems there might possible be conflict on interest concerns, but those are both things to be fixed through editing, not AfD nominations. If you want to go through and reword all the promotional parts, have at it. There seems to be more than enough coverage to establish notability though (some sources aren’t great, but there are enough that are to establish notability). As for WP:SUSTAINED arguments… I see sources from 2016 - 2024 so I can’t see how it applies here? Absurdum4242 (talk) 16:43, 8 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

All the sources Fail Wikipedia general Notability guidelines. The first source is an interview with an unreliable blog, the second source cannot be verified though from the URL, it is also an unreliable blog. The third source is the subject's website. Unsourced BLP article of an athlete on Rockdale Ilinden FC that has incomplete sections. A google search yields no indication of notability. For the record, there may be a COI issue here as Tp767, who created the Thomas Petrovski article, has several edits here. KnowledgeIsPower9281 (talk) 16:14, 4 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

For the record, while I am not yet nominating them for deletion, other possibly non-notable athletes on Rockdale Ilinden FC have poorly sourced articles or articles that are otherwise in bad shape that use excessive primary sources, including but not limited to Mathieu Cordier, Blake Ricciuto (decent shape but lots of unsourced info), Ricardo Rizzo, Bai Antoniou, and Alec Urosevski (decent shape but lots of primary sources). Poorly sourced BLP with no claim to notability. I found Gekisaka and Ameba, but these count for little more than database sources. Bloomberg and other kind of good sources have only passing mentions of the subject. The available coverage is insufficient to meet WP:CORPDEPTH. Finmagnets and other sources are press releases mainly. 89KimberlyRoad (talk) 12:11, 4 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Japan crypto exchange bitFlyer to be sold to Asian investment fund from Nikkei. IgelRM (talk) 13:59, 5 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete: Back in 2020-2021 I edited this page because an editor with a COI requested it, and I think that an uninvolved editor should check out such edits rather than forcing them COI editor to either break our rules or not contribute. In this case, the suggested changes were an improvement, so I made the change. Better does not mean good, and much more needs to be done to make this a good article. What I am not seeing is any evidence of notability; just press releases and other attempts to promote the business. --Guy Macon (talk) 17:54, 6 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep I would repeat my frequent request that nominators of Japanese-language articles show evidence of a WP:BEFORE search that includes sources in Japanese and competence to evaluate them, but in this case, it seems no WP:BEFORE or review of the Japanese Wikipedia article was done at all? In addition to the blurb in Nikkei Asia provided by User:IgelRM above, there is an article in CNBC, one about issuing Japan's first crypto credit card, coverage from The Nikkei [1] [2] [3], and lots of coverage in tech and crypto media. All of this is linked from the Japanese Wikipedia article and show clear evidence that BitFlyer is notable. DCsansei (talk) 15:09, 7 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep Again concur with @DCsansei that there are plenty of Japanese sources, and that it would be great if nominations of Japanese articles showed evidence of WP:BEFORE using a simple Japanese google search. Even then though, I’m confused how the sources already given in this article by the WSJ etc could be considered passing mentions when they directly refer to the company and its activities. I find this nomination unusually confusing.

Falls short of WP:SPORTCRIT and WP:GNG. Only played 2 minutes in Japan's third league, which is very far from notable. Article has been expanded but I don't believe the coverage meets WP:SIGCOV, which I will outline here. Source assessment:

  1. The longest, but I believe it is not secondary. It has wording like ""During my university days, I worked part-time"
  2. Primary source
  3. Primary source
  4. Primary source
  5. Very short, not significant
  6. Literally one sentence, not significant
  7. Don't think this is very significant either, describes the game on an amateur level
  8. Not about him, WP:PASSING
  9. Database
  10. Database
  11. Database Geschichte (talk) 15:52, 3 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep Re your own source assessment. The first source is a LONG profile on him, and is definitely a secondary source, the “I” in the automatic translation is reported speech from inside quotes given to the journalist as part of the article (which is not an interview either, those are specific quotations, not part of a longer question and answer session/transcript). The seventh source is likewise a two page profile specifically on him (not sure if you noticed that was page 2 of two, separated by hyperlinks at the bottom of the page), whether you think the intellectual standard of the analysis in the article is up to snuff, the article itself is inarguably a SIGCOV worthy source, being an independent secondary source focused solely on the subject of the article. This[4] source looks likely to be significant too, being billed as a serialised special feature on those three players specifically… though I can’t get through the paywall to be 100% sure. Light years away from meeting WP:SPORTCRIT and WP:GNG. Geschichte (talk) 14:59, 30 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

KEEP, but merge with corrections — this article seems like a duplication of the already-existing Reo Nakamura (footballer, born 1990) and hence a merge into the existing article may be more appropriate, once the errors have been corrected. It seems like the author of the article has made a spelling error, instead of “Reo” (the correct first name) they have put “Ryo” as the name of the subject and (for some reason) changed their DoB from 1990 to 1989.
The article's own source shows the name of the subject as “Reo”, not “Ryo” (as the author has put) and the correct DoB of the subject as 1990, not 1989 (as the author has put). The reason the others (CC: @GiantSnowman, @CommunityNotesContributor, @QEnigma) could not verify/find sources was because the author wrote the incorrect information on the Wikipedia article. The career statistics section, especially, I feel could be merged into the already existing article.

For Reo Nakamura (correct name), I was able to find some through this Google search and this one1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 just to name a few.
At the moment, it appears the player plays for Ezra F.C., in the Pepsi Lao League 1.

Unfortunately, your sources consist of match reports, database profiles and primary sources. Nothing come close to significant and independent coverage of the player. Geschichte (talk) 22:46, 30 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
In your opinion, would you say the player qualifies as being notable under WP:FOOTYN? Nyxion303💬 Talk 11:41, 31 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
WP:FOOTYN is an essay, not a formal Wikipedia policy or guideline, and has no relevance in AfD's. The subject must pass WP:GNG with multiple significant sources from publications independent of the subject. Alvaldi (talk) 13:47, 31 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
In any event, "The player section of this notability guidance has been superseded by WP:Notability (sports)". GiantSnowman 21:53, 7 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Geschichte: Of the seven sources, only the fifth one signals significant coverage on Nakamura as it tells about his personal life. However, one SIGCOV is not enough; the whole GNG needs multiple instead. Transfermarkt is obviously unnecessary to be added to Wikipedia articles as it is claimed unreliable. ⋆。˚꒰ঌ Clara A. • Keep Per all the reasons given by @DCsansei and with an endorsement of his wish that people nominating Japanese articles showed evidence of WP:BEFORE in languages other than English. There is an absolute ton of coverage of her career in Japanese online sources, which pop straight up on google, and pretty much every website now translates at the tap of a button.
One of the first two results for me was this article https://hochi.news/articles/20191127-OHT1T50195.html?page=1 Which is good solid coverage right from the start of her career when she won the national junior singles title while still a high school student, but there are also many more.
