Another little problem with Yurikbot
[edit]Yurikbot has added interwiki links between the articles named Pedro Martínez in Spanish, Italian and Portuguese. The problem is that the one in Spanish refers to a baseball player whereas the latter two refer to a municipality in Spain. Thanks. 15:05, 13 December 2005 (UTC)
- Fixed. Please see FAQ for how to resolve this in the future, and please sign with --~~~~ at the end. Thanks --Yurik 05:44, 14 December 2005 (UTC)
Stats
[edit]Does Yurikbot keep stats? I was curious how well interlinked the Wikipedias were.--Prosfilaes 08:01, 16 December 2005 (UTC)
- What kinds of statistics are you looking for? Most of the time the bot is executed on only a portion of the wiki, enumerating pages of a given language site starting at a given letter. At any moment the bot may crash for a multitude of reasons, in which case its restarted from a later letter. Keeping statistics may be somewhat useless unless the entire site's data is collected. --Yurik 00:07, 17 December 2005 (UTC)
- I guess it's probably not trivial to produce stats from Yurikbot, then. I was just curious about the number of pages that had wikilinks on them in the various encyclopedias. I was also curious about biases on the linking--which sets of Wikipedias were most likely to link to each other, like possibly zh-ja or uk-ru. I wasn't really expecting Yurikbot to be able to produce the latter set trivialy, though. Thanks for the response.--Prosfilaes 20:38, 17 December 2005 (UTC)
commons
[edit]I was wandering, is wikicommons on your list? the interwikis there could need some help (off course, it will have to be one-directional) Felagund 09:05, 23 December 2005 (UTC)
- Bot is currently only deals with wikipedia sites. Please explain how the bot can be of assistance there, and what do you mean by one-directional links (links are created as a mesh tree - every site needs to point to every other language site, and only once). --Yurik 14:41, 23 December 2005 (UTC)
- sorry for the late reply. I meant that links will go only from commons to other wikis - since that's the only possible direction. commons article can have interwikis to wikipedias, but wikipedias can't have interwiki to commons. Felagund 21:54, 24 January 2006 (UTC)
Wikipedia Maori
[edit]I see your request on mi:. It looks very like the one you made in August, which I welcomed. If it's different, please explain. Robin Patterson 04:09, 24 December 2005 (UTC)
- Its the same one, but it hasn't been granted because noone expressed support on some of the sites. --Yurik 04:13, 24 December 2005 (UTC)
arabic wikipedia
[edit]we have the categories in the years added by a template that makes interwiki links based on the page name.
The bot will not find any interwiki link in most of the years pages (almost all years between 500 and 1900). Can the bot handel that? or it will add the inter-wiki links? should this be phased out? --Tarawneh 16:27, 25 December 2005 (UTC)
what is the diff. from ZwoBot? --Tarawneh 17:39, 25 December 2005 (UTC)
- Most of the time the bot ignores the dates - it recognizes dates as such and skips them, mostly because there are lots of different ways to interlink them and i haven't figured out a way to handle them properly. The bot is the latest version of pyinterwikibot, and most likely ZwoBot is using the same bot. Also, i am one of the developers of this bot, thus both of us will probably have similar results. --Yurik 02:28, 3 January 2006 (UTC)
Your answers are displayed in the Arabic wikipedia, and waiting for the vote results. It seems that it might be approved, but we have to wait for the final results. I will keep you posted --Tarawneh 03:19, 3 January 2006 (UTC)
Bot problem
[edit]YurikBot got confused by some badly formed wiki syntax here. Qutezuce 20:44, 25 December 2005 (UTC)
- Thanks, although there is not much we can do there - the bot handled it the most proper way i can think of, without breaking anything. I wish it had a real inteligence, but then we wouldn't call it a "bot". :) --Yurik 23:13, 3 January 2006 (UTC)
Bot status
[edit]Lately Fy: is being somewhat flooded by bot-changes, and as a counter I have begun stressing bot status. Please ascertain you have bot status for Fy: before you apply your bot there. Aliter 05:56, 5 January 2006 (UTC)
- That was the reason i created an account at fy. Please support my bot request at the meta. Thanks. --Yurik 06:09, 5 January 2006 (UTC)
interlang in ja:Wikipedia:井戸端
[edit]Hi. interlang links of ja:Wikipedia:井戸端 is in ja:Template:井戸端 exceptionally. Please do not add interlang to ja:Wikipedia:井戸端. Thank you. Tietew 06:36, 5 January 2006 (UTC)
- Sure. It was a manual bot run just for Village Pump page in order to interlink all of them (it was significantly out of date). Thanks for moving it to the proper place. --Yurik 06:41, 5 January 2006 (UTC)
Bot on :sl
[edit]Before using the bot on Slovene Wikipedia, could you please take a look to local rules? You didn't intruduced bot on your user page). Regards, --Klemen Kocjancic 10:57, 5 January 2006 (UTC)
- Hi Klemen. I have been contirubing to SL since may of last year, almost a 1000 contributions so far, and I already have a bot status. What exactly do you want me to do? Thanks! --Yurik 15:30, 5 January 2006 (UTC)
Interwiki ug, ky, mn etc.
[edit]The Uyghur, Mongolian, Kyrghyz and other Central Asian versions of Wikipedia contain many empty articles. It doesn't make sense to add links to them. Please stop doing so. (Just one recent example: [1]) —Babelfisch 01:41, 6 January 2006 (UTC)
- That may be true, but the only fair way to solve this is to introduce a minimum article size requirement to be linked, in ANY language, which I don't think is a good idea. We should not penalize asian wikies just because some of their articles are just stubs - I would much rather remove interwikies that point to no articles at all. --Yurik 03:44, 6 January 2006 (UTC)
bot status?
[edit]Dear Yurik, I've got your message about bot status request for Yurikbot in Sundanese Wikipedia. What should I do then? kandar 06:26, 6 January 2006 (UTC)
- Hi Kandar, please visit meta and leave your support comment there. Thanks! --Yurik 14:33, 6 January 2006 (UTC)
Bot on nap.wikipedia
[edit]Hi Yurik, thank you for helping us with the bot. I use it myself as well, mainly for creating pages (pagefromfile.py) and very often I do not have time to care about many background works. You can work with it in the meantime on nap even not having bot status (I hope they will grant it to you soon) - we are just a bunch of editors and it does not disturb to see the bot working. Have a great day! --SabineCretella 08:12, 6 January 2006 (UTC)
- Will do. Thanks. --Yurik 14:34, 6 January 2006 (UTC)
YurikBot at lb-wiki
[edit]Your bot currently operates at lb-wiki in violation of our bot policy (rule 1.1.1.3). Please read lb:Wikipedia:Bot before performing any further edits. --Otets 01:50, 7 January 2006 (UTC)
- If you look closely, the bot performed only TWO updates, both were done manually - thus they are equivalent of me hitting "edit" button on a page. The only reason for the update was because en:Wikipedia's interwikies could not be solved automatically, and i had to run bot manually on all pages, including the ones without account. Which brings me to the point of -- please add your support meta:Requests_for_bot_status#en:User:YurikBot meta, so that bot can run unrestricted. Thanks! --Yurik 02:05, 7 January 2006 (UTC)
Sorry, I did not look that closely at the edits. As far as the meta registration is concerned, I have to inform you that the internal authorisation procedure at lb-wiki has to come first. --Otets 02:14, 7 January 2006 (UTC)
- No problem. I asked here, the bot was discussed here, and listed here. What was the conclusion? If positive, please add your support to meta:Requests_for_bot_status#en:User:YurikBot meta. Thanks! --Yurik 02:38, 7 January 2006 (UTC)
Since your initial request, we codified our interwiki bot rules. So it is now much easier to comply thereto, since they are finally in a written form. Please go through them step by step.
Actually your bot was never really discussed. I only announced to Cornischong that I am in contact with you and that after these talks maybe one day your bot would comply with our bot policy. He replied that every bot which does not bother him is a good bot, thus leaving up to me the task of explaining you the said rules. However, our talks stopped somewhere in the middle, the set of rules could not be entirely explained and thus no rules are yet complied with. Conclusion: restart the internal authorisation procedure, which this time will be much easier since all rules to be respected have in the meantime been codified.
Your bot is currently listed as a "not authorised bot", nothing more, nothing less.
--Otets 03:39, 7 January 2006 (UTC)
- This all sounds wounderful, except that a) i don't speak the language, and b) the bot is standard directly from pywikipediabot CVS (i am one of the developers maintaining iw bot), so it goes though testing every day. I guess i will post a standard request for bot approval on your forum page. --Yurik 07:15, 7 January 2006 (UTC)
Not speaking the language, might that not be a serious issue while encountering interwikilink conflicts (i.e. contradictory links found on the other sites)?
I was working with Quistnix on the pywikipedia sorting list for the lb-wiki, so the latest version thereof should in principle work (except for the different listing rules on et/nap). Maybe you can advise on this - the first letter is doubled for both (EEsti and NNapulitano), but currently the alphabetic sorting takes into account the second "e" of Eesti but not the second "n" of Nnapulitano. That's not logic, it should be one rule for both.
Yurik, even without speaking the language you should have noticed that bot authorisation requests have to be posted at "Wikipedia:Bot" and not at the forum. Actually only a detail, but definitely an occasion to show the good will.
--Otets 04:30, 8 January 2006 (UTC)
I posted my answer on my talk page. --Otets 12:18, 25 March 2006 (UTC)
YurkiBot on nds.wikipedia.org
[edit]Hi Yurik,
your bot is in violation of our bot policy. Please refrain from editing interwiki links on nds.wikipedia.org until you have your bot flag set.
Otherwise the next edit will be answered with a blocking of your nds account.
Kind regards,
Heiko Evermann 11:46, 7 January 2006 (UTC) (Admin on nds.wikipedia.org) PS: I do not care wether it is one or many edits per day. A bot is a bot and needs a proper registration.
- I did not know one manual bot change can stirr up such a response. The bot status is pending on meta, awaiting a steward to fix permissions. --Yurik 15:03, 7 January 2006 (UTC)
Years on sr:wikipeda
[edit]3 articles for years are something that you ought to neglect. They were made back in the time when people thought that it might be useful. And now, we're slowly deleting those redundant year articles so that only 1 version (out of 3) remains. So, the cyrillic names of the dates and years are correct whereas everything ending with (latinica) or (ASCII) will be deleted in the future. Also, do neglect the latin names for dates like sr:10. maj (the example you have given), because those are also going to be deleted one day. Thanks for your concern and interest in our project. --Filip (talk) 16:24, 7 January 2006 (UTC) (sr:User:Dungodung)
- Oh, they'll be deleted alright. We're going with a few a day, just so that we don't get a massive loss of articles. I hope you'll have patience for that. Or better yet, make a blacklist of articles that are never to have interwiki. Cheers and thanks for notifying. --Filip (talk) 17:32, 9 January 2006 (UTC)
- I am in a process of majorly rewriting interwiki bot - the new version will ignore such articles when it has a proper auto-recognized alternative date article. --Yurik 17:54, 9 January 2006 (UTC)
Thank you for the bot

Dates/years on mr
[edit]Hello Yurik,
First of all, thanks for taking an active interest in mr.
I was referred your message by mr:User talk:Harshalhayat. I am an aspiring sysop on mr (my request for permission is pending) but I have been active on mr for quite a while.
Both forms of year reference (ई.स. and इ.स.) are valid in mr and after a brief discussion, it was decided that mr wikipedia will use the ई.स. form. By that time, articles in both forms already existed. I have been converting इ.स. articles to ई.स. as I edit/create them.
So..in short - going forward, mr will use ई.स. and convert इ.स. to the other form.
Thanks again.
- Ok, will post any articles that use a different form. Also, let me know if you want to make decade/century/millenium articles. Thanks! --Yurik 18:19, 12 January 2006 (UTC)
Re: Date forms on Marathi Wikipedia
[edit]Hello Yurik,
- The format of years is: 'AD 2006' to be written 'ई.स. २००६'.
- In your message, you have referred three articles: इ.स. १९०५ (AD 1905), ई.स. १९४८ (AD 1948), ई.स. १९९८(AD 1998).
- First format is older one whereas latter two are newer.
- Format for centuries is little complicated as we write them in words.
- Thanks,
- Thanks Harshal! I adjusted the bot and moved any pages i found to the proper format (see changes by Yurik on mr:). Please give a list of centuries as words so i will put them into the bot, or consider renaming them to a numbered format (either way is fine). Thanks! --Yurik 02:41, 17 January 2006 (UTC)
Interwiki bot on sw
[edit]Hi, I'm an admin on the Swahili Wikipedia. It would be great to have the Interwiki bot run on sw. I didn't see any mention of sw on meta:Requests for bot status#en:User:YurikBot. Do you need a bot flag to proceed? — Matt Crypto 17:21, 22 January 2006 (UTC)
- The bot is in a dry dock, being re-written. I don't think i have a bot status on sw: (see my user page for a list and an easy way to check). In the mean time, it would be great if you added your support to the meta page. Thanks! --Yurik 06:17, 25 January 2006 (UTC)
- I've added my support. Thanks for your interwiki efforts, and happy (re)coding! — Matt Crypto 14:04, 25 January 2006 (UTC)
Interwiki linking of en:Denial and de:Leugnung
[edit]Dear Yurik operators, your bot has repeatedly inserted interwiki links between the articles mentioned above. Please note that the contents of both articles have nothing to do with each other. de:Leugnung is basically a dictionary entry, even though a motion to have it removed to the Wiktionary has met with some opposition. The only correct German equivalent for the defence mechanism called "denial" in psychoanalysis is Verleugnung. --Thorsten1 18:54, 23 January 2006 (UTC)
- Dear Thorsten1, the bots are doing this because of the way they operate (see FAQ above). Both articles you mention link to a hebrew article, and that article in turn links to both of them. Until you resolve this (by having a proper corresponding articles matched up), ALL interwiki bots will continue to do this. --Yurik 06:26, 25 January 2006 (UTC)
- OK, thanks for the clarification. I already guessed that it had something to do with that, but then I thought that interwiki bots might have a blacklist to avoid such mistakes. Unfortunately I do nor read Hebrew, so it's impossible for me to decide if the Hebrew article belongs to one or the other... I will try and find someone to sort this out. --Thorsten1 13:54, 25 January 2006 (UTC)
- The blacklist would be impossible to maintain when dealing with soon to be 1 million! articles :). --Yurik 16:53, 25 January 2006 (UTC)

Your bot's edit summary
[edit]Hi, first I want to say your bot is doing great work, and is correct almost all of the time I see it. Thank you!
I was wondering whether your bot could put the link to any interwiki it adds or modifies in the edit summary (so that it writes e.g. "Robot adding pl:Fürth" instead of "robot Adding: pl"). That way, the newly interlinked pages would show up in the Watchlists of people watching these pages, and it would be easier to spot errors quickly. Would it be hard/useful to add this feature to the bot? Just wondering... Best wishes, Kusma (討論) 05:03, 24 January 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks! The bot lists all sites it added, modified, and removed from the page. Usually the list is only 1-3 items long (see YurikBot contributions), but sometimes, when a new article is written/linked, it adds all 10-50 links at once. I don't think the note will allow such long text, so i think i can only expand to the article name when there are less than a few links being added, modified or removed. --Yurik 06:14, 25 January 2006 (UTC)
- Of course that should only be done for small interwiki changes (large interwiki changes will be noticeable anyway). Probably not more than three or four entries should be written out in full. Kusma (討論) 06:47, 25 January 2006 (UTC)
Bogus articles on sr: wikipedia
[edit]You'll be glad to notice that the the list you left me a while ago is now cleared, i.e. we finally deleted all of the articles that were somewhat misleading your bot. Anyway, I had a couple of questions for you about the pywikipediabot, but you never seem to be on IRC, because that's where our discussion could go flawlessly. So, cheers and see you online sometimes.. --Filip (talk) 07:36, 25 January 2006 (UTC)
- Last few weeks were very busy at work, trying to find some time for the wiki activities. You can post your questions here and i will try to answer them, or there is a mailing list pywikipediabot-users at lists dot sourceforge dot net. Thanks! --Yurik 16:56, 25 January 2006 (UTC)
interwiki for China
[edit]Hello. I've sorted interwiki links for various Chinas (China, People's Republic of China, Republic of China, Taiwan) on m:User:PuzzletChung/interwiki workaround. Could you update the interwiki bot to fit that into the wikis? --Puzzlet Chung 11:22, 30 January 2006 (UTC)
- Hello Puzzlet, I will try to sort it out at some point when i have a bit more time. Currently I am just too swamped at work. Thank you for sorting it out! Once I am done with the bot, I might also add a way to give it a list of "known to be correct" links so it will not ask me to follow the incorrect ones. --Yurik 03:12, 2 February 2006 (UTC)
Bolungarvík
[edit]Why does your bot always add "Ísafjarðardjúpi" to the name of the town Bolungarvík? In Iceland there is only one Bolungarvík (which is a small town), although there is a bay called Bolungavík (no "r"). There is no risk of mixing those place names. (unsigned by user:Rsmelt).
- It is hard to find the articles you mention if you don't give links. The reason bot does it is because that's the title of the article in is: wiki! See is:Bolungarvík (Ísafjarðardjúpi). If you want, you can rename the is: article, and some bot will eventually update the link. Also, it is customary to sign your posts. (Use four '~' symbols). --Yurik 19:38, 1 February 2006 (UTC)
- Sorry about not signing. When running out of the office in a hurry, I saved the page without reviewing. The article on the Icelandic Wiki is:Bolungarvík (Ísafjarðardjúpi) is wrong about mentioning the Ísafjarðardjúp, but I am not active on the Icelandic Wiki. So I am telling you what the custom is around here, but your bot ignores that, because some other Wiki says otherwise. What if the chinese wiki would mention that Bolungarvík is situated on Mars. Would your bot spread that nonsense over all wikis. I think this behaviour of bots needs top be discussed. --Rsmelt 21:09, 1 February 2006 (UTC)
- the custom around here - where is here? If here is in en:, then that custom is irrelevant - we are not talking about naming an article in en:, only referencing the proper article in is:. If here is is:, then sign in into is: and move the article! No one is stopping you from editing any article in any language. is:Bolungarvík is a disambiguation page between is:Bolungarvík (Ísafjarðardjúpi) and is:Bolungarvík (Hornströndum) (does not exist). Someone somewhere made a relation between the en:Bolungarvík and the is:Bolungarvík (Ísafjarðardjúpi), possibly by modifying some other language. The bot recognizes that one is a disambig, and another is a topic article, thus when linking a proper topic article en:Bolungarvík, it matched it with another topic article, is:Bolungarvík (Ísafjarðardjúpi). Both articles describe the island, both have the same pictures, both look similar, even to me who does not understand the language. I still fail to understand what is the issue??? We always try to link the best possible match from one language to another, and that is precisely what the bot has done.
- If Chinese wiki writes that Bolungarvík is on Mars, people who can speak Chinese will correct it. It does not matter what country you are in, as long as you can contribute, you are welcome to do so. If you cannot write but see something is wrong, you can always ask at the embassy, IRC channel, or on page’s talk page - someone will help you. Hope this answers your question. --Yurik 03:09, 2 February 2006 (UTC)
- I do understand the technicalities of your bot, I just want to point at the negative side of using this bot. here in around here refers to Iceland, or rather to the Icelandic namespace in the real world ;). Both articles describe the town (not the island), but you can see that there is more information in the en: version. By the way, I am a foreigner living in Iceland, but I do speak and write the language. I also happen to live in Bolungarvík. But that is not the point. My point is, that I edited an article, which was afterward reversed by a bot that does not check the accuracy of my edit, but instead uses some technical logic to deem my edit unfit. My point with the chinese example is, that if there were nobody in zh:, that knew anything (more) about the matter, nobody could fix the mistake (I clearly do not understand that language). The existence of a bot, should not force me to make a call to the chinese embassy. I hope you understand my point of view. --Rsmelt 08:06, 2 February 2006 (UTC)
- Rsmelt, I perfectly well understand your point, but you, respectfully, are failing to understand mine. This issue is NOT about the bot! The issue at hand is about how to link to an article. When you modify the en:Bolungarvík from is:Bolungarvík (Ísafjarðardjúpi) to is:Bolungarvík, you are not changing the text of the English article! You are changing a link to another article in a is: namespace. It does not matter how you properly write the name in Iceland. What matters is the proper title of the article in is: namespace, otherwise the link becomes pointless. You can write a link from en: to [[is:The Bolungarvík]], but unless such an article exists, the link is useless. Thus, what matters is the name of the matching article in is:, not the proper way of writing it in Icelandic. When article is incorrectly named, it should be moved by the community, but pointing to “correct” title is useless because no-one gets to see it, and because it is not giving any value to the user who just wants to see the corresponding article in a different language. Hope I was clearer this time. --Yurik 14:53, 2 February 2006 (UTC)

Interwiki question
[edit]Hello Yurik, you might answer my question. I just start running Interwiki.py bot in Thai Wikipedia. Everything runs great except sometime it removed links to en with no reason such as [2], [3], and [4]
I run bot on Windows XP from command line with the parameter
interwiki.py -force -autonomous -skipauto -nobacklink -start:!
--Manop - TH 23:01, 20 February 2006 (UTC)
- I think it's a known issue with the "force" switch. I strongly suggest not to use it. There is currently no "for sure" way for mediawiki to tell the bot that the page does not exist, so sometimes for some unknown reason bot thinks that page is not there, and starts removing links to it. Just run the bot without force, and it will be ok. --Yurik 02:30, 21 February 2006 (UTC)
- Okay, thank you. --Manop - TH 22:35, 21 February 2006 (UTC)

YurikBot on hrwiki
[edit]Could you configure YurikBot to use English, or alternatively Croatian, in edit summaries on hrwiki? It is now apparently making summaries in Serbian Cyrillic which is unintelligible to many users. Thanks. --Elephantus 01:33, 12 March 2006 (UTC)
- The bot is suppose to do it in either local language or english. Apparently it broke in hr:. Thanks for the bug report, i will try to track it down. --Yurik 02:19, 12 March 2006 (UTC)
Ummm, it seems the problem continues. Take a look here. --Elephantus 13:37, 15 March 2006 (UTC)
- I found the problem. Bot framework tries to find the closest language it can. So when it has translation for 'hr', it uses it, otherwise it will try similar languages:
if code in ['bs','hr','mk','sh','sr']: return ['sh','hr','sr','bs']
- I can either remove hr from that family, or, preferably, add a proper translation for hr. I need translation for the words: 'robot ','Adding','Removing','Modifying' into Croatian. Thanks!
- --Yurik 14:13, 15 March 2006 (UTC)
Ok, the translations are 'robot' = 'robot', 'Adding' = 'Dodaje', 'Removing' = 'Uklanja', 'Modifying' = 'Mijenja'. --Elephantus 14:30, 15 March 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks, done. Should be checked in soon. --Yurik 18:49, 15 March 2006 (UTC)
Latin Wikipedia (la)
[edit]Hi, is there a reason why your bot did not vist us for some weeks? See [5]. --Roland2 21:40, 14 March 2006 (UTC) (la:Usor:Roland2)
- I was on a minor wiki-vacation. la: is running, should see it shortly. :) --Yurik 22:34, 14 March 2006 (UTC)
- Fine. Thanks! --Roland2 23:44, 14 March 2006 (UTC)
Bosnian Wikipedia
[edit]Both are correct. Bosnian language recognize both terms as correct, becuase bosnian people (bosniak, croat, serb, others) in some areas speak avgust or august... You can use one or other term as you like, i think one is only redirect to other... so it's not important. Best regards! --Mhare 00:57, 15 March 2006 (UTC)
- Unfortunatelly they are not redirects but different articles about the same day of the year. Please tell me which one will be the "proper" name and the other would become a redirect. Thanks! --Yurik 03:57, 15 March 2006 (UTC)
Regarding your question "august" is correct. We have only recently corrected this and are still woring on ironing out all of the details. --Dado 01:22, 15 March 2006 (UTC)
- Can you tell me the article title in the final form? Should it be bs:7. august or bs:7. avgust? I can probably help with the redirects. Thanks! --Yurik 03:57, 15 March 2006 (UTC)
Yurik, I can see that you got two different answers here which may had caused the confusion. Both avgust and august are correct in bosnian language but bs Wikipedia has standardized "august" for exactly this problem of potentially having duplicate articles. Sorry that you had to spend extra time on this but articles should be titled August with Avgust redirected to it. Let me know if you have more questions or if this is still unclear --Dado 19:27, 16 March 2006 (UTC)
OK if you are saying that avgust versions were more complete than august versions than I would need to delete all august entries to make room for "move". Please confirm this before I delete anything. Thanks --Dado 22:52, 16 March 2006 (UTC)
- They were not more complete, they were different. I merged the differences for each day, and named them Avgust with a redirect from August. If you wanted to make all days "August", you should have renamed them. Rolling back my changes deleted all the work i did to merge the changes. There is not that much of it, but one thing you can do is undo your rollback and move them instead (you will also have to rename the pages, but that can easily be done with a bot - let me know if you would need help. --Yurik 04:56, 17 March 2006 (UTC)
Wrong month
[edit]What's up with this edit?. I don't speak that language, but it didn't take long to figure out that the link was changed to point to June, not December. Why?
Fourohfour 10:42, 15 March 2006 (UTC)
- I wrote that message because I thought there was more than one of those mistakes. However, it looks like that's the only one. If so, please ignore this message. Thanks. Fourohfour 10:49, 15 March 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks for reporting, i will have to see why bot did that (it first added one month, and then - another. My guess, the fur: page had an error. --Yurik 13:40, 15 March 2006 (UTC)
Just wanted to give you a heads up. Your bot added many interwiki's to Cyberpunk. The reason there was so many is because of an accidental blanking. Perhaps you could add a flag to your bot to report articles that need over 2 interwikis inserted. Thanks. - RoyBoy 800 20:29, 15 March 2006 (UTC)
- Most new pages get more than 2 links when the bot runs. I am not sure what kind of flag were you thinking about? --Yurik 22:13, 15 March 2006 (UTC)
- Just something that might help you detect vandalism that has gone unnoticed. - RoyBoy 800 05:46, 16 March 2006 (UTC)
Alpha sorting interwikis
[edit]Hello!
First of all congratulations for your bot, it's doing a superb job! I have also a small question that's buzzing me, how does the bot sorts the interwiki links? For instance I can undrestand that it puts es before eo because Espanol is before Esperanto, and it adds hu at M because the name is Magyar, but how about ja, ko or other non-latin (or related) script languages? Why, for example does it add ja after letter N? Thx! Mihai -talk 08:47, 16 March 2006 (UTC)
I've got similar suggestion. I do thinks that interwiki links should be sorted alphabeticaly by language name. e.g. aa goes before ab but after a, aa- goes before aaa but after az. Hope it'll help. --tasc 07:53, 21 March 2006 (UTC)
- The sorting of interwiki is a well known problem. Please see comments and vote for the bug 2867. --Yurik 13:28, 21 March 2006 (UTC)
Wiktionary interwiki bots
[edit]Hoi, When you run interwiki bots on Wiktionary, you can do all wiktionaries at the same time. Running it on one wiktionary at a time does a good job for that wiktionary but it is a waste of resources on all other wiktionaries.. My bot runs on some 30 wiktionaries at the same time.. I have some five bots running at all time.. Given the changes recently with capitalisation it makes a difference.. Given that the bot has only recently been fixed it explains why I have not done la yet. GerardM 09:00, 16 March 2006 (UTC)
- Hi Gerard, I am a bit confused by what you wrote - are you asking a question or you are just telling me how great it is that I added the ability for bot to fix all pages at once? ;) --Yurik 14:30, 20 March 2006 (UTC)
Despite many efforts to make it stop, I can't seem to prevent bots from adding incorrect intewiki links to this article. Some of the interwiki links refer to the small French town of Camarade. I went through every article linked to from Comrade and fixed the interwiki links, but bots on the other wikis keep adding them back, and eventually they reach here. I just reverted YurikBot, but if there's an exception list somewhere, please add Comrade to it so that I don't have to again. Thanks. --Diderot 06:17, 17 March 2006 (UTC)
Hindi Wiki
[edit]Hi, I do not understand how the interwiki bot works. I have recently created a large number of articles at the Hindi wiki, and to each, added a single corresponding link to English wiki. Is is possible to add the links of all existing languages (which have that article) to that Hindi article, and conversely, update the other language articles with the Hindi link? Can you do it for me? You could write to me at en:User_talk:Magicalsaumy. 202.68.145.230 18:53, 18 March 2006 (UTC)
- Please read the faq at the top of this page describing bot's functions. My bot has recently ran through hi: wiki (see the list of contributions at this page). I can re-run the bot, although i cannot guarantee that all pages will be updated - some pages may have conflicts that would need to be resolved first before the bot can help (again, see FAQ above). --Yurik 21:27, 18 March 2006 (UTC)
Bot functioning
[edit]What is the system of using this bot? May I use this bot, or is it you who must use this upon my request or your wish? Cygnus_hansa 21:55, 18 March 2006 (UTC)
- Hi. Bot is a program that runs on my comuputer. You can use the bot framework (search for pywikipediabot framework on meta:) to perform many different tasks, or you can ask one of the bot operators to do it for you. --Yurik 14:26, 20 March 2006 (UTC)
Interwiki order
[edit]Hi! On the Norwegian Wikipedia we have recently decided to use self.alphabetical for the interwiki order. It'd be nice if you could add that to your bot (and even to the CVS – if I'm not mistaken, you are a developer of the bot?). Thanks. =) Jon Harald Søby 11:00, 20 March 2006 (UTC)
- Hi Jon! I think the bot is already using alphabetical sort for no: site. Can you point me to an example where its not the case? Thanks! --Yurik 14:23, 20 March 2006 (UTC)
- I see now that it does that most places; however, here it added [[gn:]] (Avañe'ẽ) after Galego, when it should be after Asturiano. That's why I asked; I see, however, that all other interwikis are in the right order… Jon Harald Søby 15:22, 20 March 2006 (UTC)
- Jon, thanks much - there are two issues at play: Different sites want to have different sort orders of interwiki. Unfortunatelly, developers need to be persuaded that the feature is needed (see comments and vote for the bug 2867). I will move gn: for all sites, but the bug should be fixed for much better solution. --Yurik 13:28, 21 March 2006 (UTC)

YurikBot on nl wiki
[edit]Hello Yurik, yesteday and today you have added interwiki's to 2 articles: nl:Barraigh (a Scottish island) with pt:Barra (a Brazilian municipality) and nl:Cariri (a Brazilian microregion) with pt:Cariris (a Brazilian tribe). These are wrong and I had to delete them manually. It is not the first time I see this kind of intewiki linking from your bot. may I ask you to be more careful when adding interwikis. Thanks. WHB 11:04, 21 March 2006 (UTC)
- Adjusted links in your message. Please see the FAQ above that explains when and how the bot adds links and how to solve incorrect linking. --Yurik 13:51, 21 March 2006 (UTC)
Спиритизм and Кардек, Аллан
[edit]ru:Кардек, Аллан, ru:Спиритизм Could you take a look at these articles at Russian Wikipedia? Arges 13:58, 24 March 2006 (UTC)
- The first one is about Allan Kardec, the creator of Spiritism. The second is about Spiritism itself. Do you need any further information? --Yurik 14:20, 24 March 2006 (UTC)
YurikBot
[edit]I would like to ask you to think about modifying your bot so that is does not update an article, if the last edit was by a anon. Experience shows that 85% of anon edits are vandalism, and your bot masks anons in watch lists. Therefore we have to waste a significant time:
- to check after your bot which is not smart enough.
- to actually edit a vandalized article rather than simply hit "revert" button.
mikka (t) 00:07, 25 March 2006 (UTC)
- Mikkalai, i think this is an excelent suggestion. Two things:
- If last edit was by an IP, the bot shouldn't just ignore the page - it should update interwikies if the edit time has happened over 1 or 2 days ago.
- Getting the page history is a very expensive operation, and places a significant burden on the server, so the raw file export from the server should include if the last change was made by an IP, instead of bot re-requesting it for every page it wants to change.
- I will contact the devs to try to get that information from the server. --Yurik 00:57, 25 March 2006 (UTC)
Hoysala architecture
[edit]Hi, your bot made some addition recently to this article. However, that page had been vandalized just before you did so,. I reverted the vandalism, but do not know how to put in the stuff which your bot had put in. I am sorry, and hope that you will be able to do the needful. Regards, ImpuMozhi 02:52, 29 March 2006 (UTC)
- You reverted properly, the link is fine. Even if have reverted all the changes, the bot would have eventually re-added the missing link to the article. Thanks for your concern :). --Yurik 22:27, 3 April 2006 (UTC)
the bot
[edit]your bot has vandalised this page on Polish wiki. It adds interwiki links to a pornographic book to a page referring to a female name (Justine) that happens to be part of this book's title. I have rev-ed the changes but do you think IT will come back? ;)
- Bot did not vandalize anything - it simply added whichever links were missing on that page, using information from other pages. The other pages were linking to the incorrect (as you called them - 'pornographic book') pages, and that is what caused the issue. Thanks to you (i assume) - the error has been cleaned up in all articles on all the sites, so now it will not come back unless someone puts the links back on the other pages. Please sign your name when you leave comments. --Yurik 22:22, 3 April 2006 (UTC)
Wikipedia bot on another mediawiki project
[edit]Hi! I want to use to use your bot on another mediawiki-site (http://www.wikischool.de), but I don't know where to change the urls, since this project isn't part of the wikipedia family. Please help me.
- You need to create a new file in the families\ directory describing your project. Here's a sample, but i might have missed something. Add a
usernames['wikischool']['de'] = 'botuseraccount' #change the account name
to your user-config.py file. Use login.py, and it should work. --Yurik 22:17, 3 April 2006 (UTC)
# -*- coding: utf-8 -*- import family class Family(family.Family): name = 'wikischool' def __init__(self): family.Family.__init__(self) self.name = 'wikischool' self.langs = { 'de': 'www.wikischool.de' } self.namespaces[4] = { '_default': u'Wikischool' } self.namespaces[5] = { '_default': u'Wikischool talk' } def path(self, code): return '/w/index.php' def version(self, code): return "1.5"
What the Yurikbot did on en: Siege of Tenochtitlan page
[edit]Hi Yurik,
I'm not complaining but, since I'm a Wiki newbie, I'd like to understand what the Yurikbot did on the Siege of Tenochtitlan page. I saw the entry on the history page and decided to start digging to figure out what YurikBot was and what it was doing.
Forgive me if I get some terms and concepts garbled. I've tried to figure out what's going on by reading your Talk page but it's all Bosnian to me.
As I understand it, YurikBot added Interwiki links to the bottom of the Siege of Tenochtitlan page. These links look like this
[es:Noche Triste]
I think this means that the Siege of Tenochtitlan page is the closest match to the Spanish Noche Triste page.
Which is true because we just recently folded the La Noche Triste page into the Siege of Tenochtitlan in the English Wikipedia and put in a REDIRECT from La Noche Triste to the Siege of Tenochtitlan.
Presumably YurikBot saw the REDIRECT and used that info to update the InterWiki liks.
If this was the end of the story, all you would have to do is confirm that I correctly understand what happened and we could all go home.
However, I would like to understand how YurikBot will behave in a hypothetical situation. We may choose to put back the La Noche Triste page into the English Wikipedia someday because I can see now that the Spanish Wikipedia article Noche Triste has a lot more information that the English version of the article didn't.
So, someday, we may translate the Spanish Noche Triste article into English and break the REDIRECT from the English La Noche Triste to the Siege of Tenochtitlan.
I assume that, some time after we do so, YurikBot will figure this out and make some updates.
What I want to know is: Who will take the [es:Noche Triste] InterWiki link out of the Siege of Tenochtitlan article? Will the YurikBot correctly figure out what has happened or will we have to take it out ourselves?
Thanks for your time.
Richard 07:43, 3 April 2006 (UTC)
- Richard, you are correct at your first assumption: this comparison shows that the bot added the three links to the article. It was probably going through either es:, fr:, or sv: site, and one of them had a link to the english page. Since no other english pages were mentioned in any other place, it was assumed that the english page corresponds to the other ones.
- Redirects are automatically followed and never linked to. Which means that eventually all links to a redirect will be replaced by links to an actual article. So if sometime later you change the redirect to a separate article, nothing will point to it. If you point an es: page to the new en: page by hand, but don't touch fr: and es: pages, it will create a conflict - more than one english page will be pointed to, and the bot will give up and require user's attention.
- Hope this addressed your concern. --Yurik 22:03, 3 April 2006 (UTC)
What the bot did to three of my pages
[edit]I put links in to two different caves and one link to the Galapagos Islands on these three pages: Blastoise, Mewtwo, and Jynx. Why did this bot take out my links and the information about those links?
- I see nothing wrong - here bot added zh:, here bot added pl: and pt:, and removed an incorrect ja: link, and lastly, here i see no mentioning of my bot at all!? Can you give a link to the history item where my bot removed information? --Yurik 21:49, 3 April 2006 (UTC)
- I dont know how to get you the history.
- 1) Please use this signature --~~~~ at the end of all your messages.
- 2) Was the information you entered ever saved in wiki? Look through the history of the page, and see which page version had your text in it. Copy the location of that page and post it here, so i can see what was there before that my bot deleted. --Yurik 22:08, 3 April 2006 (UTC)
- nevermind. sorry for the trouble. --~~~~
