OrphanReferenceFixer: Help on reversion

[edit]

Hi there! I check pages listed in Category:Pages with incorrect ref formatting to try to fix reference errors. Recently, you reverted my fix to Keith Miller with the Australian cricket team in England in 1953.

If you did this because the references should be removed from the article, you have misunderstood the situation. Most likely, the article originally contained both <ref name="foo">...</ref> and one or more <ref name="foo"/> referring to it. Someone then removed the <ref name="foo">...</ref> but left the <ref name="foo"/>, which results in a big red error in the article. I replaced one of the remaining <ref name="foo"/> with a copy of the <ref name="foo">...</ref>; I did not re-insert the reference to where it was deleted, I just replaced one of the remaining instances. What you need to do to fix it is to make sure you remove all instances of the named reference so as to not leave any big red error.

If you reverted because I made an actual mistake, please be sure to also correct any reference errors in the page so I won't come back and make the same mistake again. Also, please post an error report at User talk:AnomieBOT so my operator can fix me! If the error is so urgent that I need to be stopped, also post a message at User:AnomieBOT/shutoff/OrphanReferenceFixer. Thanks! AnomieBOT 06:03, 16 February 2010 (UTC) If you do not wish to receive this message in the future, add {{bots|optout=AnomieBOT-OrphanReferenceFixer}} to your talk page.[reply]

Womens cricketers

[edit]
Got the machine to start trickling the photos through Commons:Special:Contributions/YellowMonkey. Using a different computer though, which has restrictions on how much downloading can be done, so it might take a few days YellowMonkey (bananabucket) 05:01, 10 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Looks like you've id'd most of them except for the coach. —SpacemanSpiff 07:28, 10 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
BTW, I created cats for the ones you've already uploaded and added a TBI cat for the unidentified ones (though I'm sure that the category powers that be at Commons will delete it soon). I think Ellyse Perry is my new favorite, replacing Mithali Raj! —SpacemanSpiff 08:32, 10 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
The players are all ID'ed. NZ will be difficult though. At least with the Australians some of them had very distinctive chins, or in the case of Leah Poulton, a very sharp nose. Gee I wish I had better than a 2X zoom that doesn't go powdery when you zoom in. Heh I wonder who the others will go for. Some folks asked me to nag them personally if I had a poll of females. YellowMonkey (bananabucket) 08:52, 10 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
"Some folks asked me to nag them personally" - Yes, thank you. Most appreciated. Pdfpdf (talk) 01:54, 12 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
[1] has many of the NZW, the rest can be done by elimination I guess. Did you have a press pass or just normal spectator rights? —SpacemanSpiff 09:03, 10 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
No rights. There are no security provisions, you can just gatecrash the women's and domestic teams and just mingle among them. Because of the building works at the moment, there is no cage enclosure around the nets, but when the international men are there, you aren't allowed within 50 metres of them (ie, forced back onto the back road) YellowMonkey (bananabucket) 09:11, 10 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Same with the women in India, Sania's probably the only one that's broken through the "need for security" barrier. I remember once at Madras Cricket Club (I have to convert that from a redirect to an article) I was waiting for my squash partner and this girl, a few years younger asked me if I wanted to play, and I ended up being losing two games in a pretty humiliating manner, didn't bother to even find out her name. And then that weekend, I saw her picture in the papers and found out she was just back from winning an under-16 tournament in Malaysia! (Anjali Ponni -- think she passes WP:ATHLETE, so I'll probably write one). That's why I think security for women players is very important! —SpacemanSpiff 09:27, 10 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Well come on! It takes less time to vote than to run checkusers and semiprotect pages :( !!!! As for Indian sportspeople, I saw the results of swimming at some South Asian Games, and the winners are sometimes 10-15% slower than the WR. There would be about 60 people in australia in each event who could swim faster than that I wonder if they would survive an AFD simply for winning even though the std is so poor. Indian male swimmers are a bit slower than Australia's women, although Pathan and Munaf are hardly different, nor D Kulkarni YellowMonkey (bananabucket) 01:29, 11 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Ha ha, no, I'm waiting for my next favorite Lisa to show up, I'll vote on all, was just kidding. Same thing with the Winter Games in Colorado, a local girl doing her masters decided to represent India and was there, I can't seem to find her on the article and forgot her name. Speed sports aren't exactly an Indian domain, remember the switchover from grass to artificial for hockey? The Indian team completely lost it then. —SpacemanSpiff 02:02, 11 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Well India won't do well at any athletic sports unless they get serious about fitness, and they might become irrelevant in limited overs cricket at this rate. Especially if any of the usual sporting powers take up cricket, like they did in hockey. I think Australian cricket is a bit lazy and would try harder if there were more ruthless countries around eg germany and holland; Ponting really gave me a chuckle when he said that Watson showed "unbelievable commitment" by not drinking alcohol. Lol. In the 1980s Australia's head coach Don Talbot expelled the best swimmer Neil Brooks because he drank alcohol and he was one of the few breadwinners at the time. YellowMonkey (bananabucket) 03:15, 11 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
she's on -- Neha Ahuja, went to CU, Boulder and then the Turin Winter Olympics. —SpacemanSpiff 02:06, 11 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Is that article correct in saying that she "qualified"? Or was she just given a wildcard. She was 25% slower than the winner. Bangladesh at the Summer Olympics, nobody has actually qualified on merit YellowMonkey (bananabucket) 03:15, 11 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I think she qualified, the qualification criteria for winters is a lot lower compared to the average expectation I think. That's how this guy from Ghana qualified this year. BTW, just fixed a bit of formatting on your edit notice. cheers. —SpacemanSpiff 08:12, 11 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

It's impressive how much your timing and cropping have improved. Try leaving more lead room in your shots at the next event. A couple of other good links for browsing are rule of thirds and motion blur. If you can time it right, motion blur adds dynamism to sports photography. Durova409 03:32, 13 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Well, I think I may have also been helped by the fact that there is no security for female players, so I can just mingle among them, and the new temporary nets at the moment have one layer, not two, so I can put my camera in the gap and the net is gone, as well as the fact that they trained much longer than the men, so I was able to take more samples. I also have a laptop now, which means I can empty the camera memory onto the computer and take more samples YellowMonkey (vote in the Southern Stars photo poll) 07:03, 15 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

John Kent Cooke

[edit]

I would like to re-create the page that you deleted in 2006. I think he's an important part of Redskins history as the son of Jack Kent Cooke and owner of the team until the estate was sold.--Levineps (talk) 18:42, 10 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Sure. The original article was deleted under WP:CSD for being ridiculous; just 2 words and pointless, you don't need permission to start a proper version of those articles YellowMonkey (bananabucket) 01:29, 11 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Uploads

[edit]

I don't know, haven't done mass uploads so far, which is why I think you should get one of the bot operators to pull it up from flickr, seems a lot easier I think. Another 6 hours, India might not be No 1. All depends on Mishra and Bhajji. —SpacemanSpiff 05:34, 18 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I meant whether the images were making the page too long to load up and vote... India aren't a sustainable with this attack especially when Zaheer is not a fit guy and gets injured a lot. They get injured lot for a bunch of 130kph bowlers... YellowMonkey (bananabucket!) 05:43, 18 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Also the fielding is atrocious, catching is very average, and throws at stumps usually miss by around 0.5m at least. The NZ and Aus women only miss by about 20cm on average, although those were admittedly not in the heat of battle YellowMonkey (bananabucket!) 05:43, 18 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, yes. It does take a little extra time and I've had quite a few edit conflicts, so I'll get to the rest after the initial enthusiasm subsides. Well, Bhajji took another, funny that this Indian team is on top! The next B-G trophy is not for another two years, right? —SpacemanSpiff 05:47, 18 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Images

[edit]

Hi again. I was wondering if you knew of any good, copyright free images of Hammond, Rhodes, or Jardine for their articles? I can't get anything (and wouldn't know what to do to upload it) here due to copyright. Any help appreciated. As for Hammond, I'm going to go for GA in the next day or two as the peer review has not given me as much as I'd hoped. I'm working on Jardine at the moment, but still a way to go. If you have any Australian POV stuff on him (e.g. Fingleton), I'd appreciate it once I've got the Bodyline section expanded. Finally, I've expanded an obscure Yorkshire cricketer, Wilf Barber, whose article I came across while going over Hutton. Do you think its worth taking to GA or is it too brief and sketchy? Thanks.--Sarastro1 (talk) 22:45, 14 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, I don't think Barber is too short at all, if you want to serach the Wisden archive that works, and it you don't want to or can't you can just trawl the Cricinfo oracle like I did for Murali Kartik, which I need to clean up. As far as English cricketers goes, if there is a photo of them in Australia before 1946 then it is free, so they should be all over the place. The Picture Australia website has a big database, although I thought any bodyline book will have some of Jardine in there. Also CI should work, and sometimes if you go to the scorecard it has linkes to photos of hte said match. I can scan a biog of Fingo and the bodyline bits and email it to you. Also, for your entertainment, there is a photo poll of female cricketers right above, to pick the photos that go into the article YellowMonkey (vote in the Southern Stars photo poll) 07:03, 15 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
That would be very helpful, thanks! I'm afraid I've no access to a scanner at the moment for any photos in books. And if they're published over here, does that not affect the copyright? Re Barber, I'm probably going to do a few articles of pre-war cricketers, and all I've got is whatever is in a few books I've got and anything in the Wisden archive. What's in Barber's article now is pretty much all there is available that I can get hold of.--Sarastro1 (talk) 20:55, 15 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
No, the Australian copyright law says they go into PD if they were taken in Aus, irrespective of whether they were published in the UK first, or more likely, an Australian paper YellowMonkey (vote in the Southern Stars photo poll) 09:23, 17 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I'm following your suggestion and going for FAC on Hammond. I've put Rhodes up for peer review with a view to doing the same. However, one problem. Can't add ALT text and it's driving me mad! Even following instructions, it isn't working. Any help much appreciated! --Sarastro1 (talk) 00:39, 20 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Added alt text for Hammond. It should be easy to apply that to Rhodes, although I got fed up with the giant graph with too many twists and turns. Also with the citation templates you use for the books in Hammond, they create the "author, title, pp. 67." format with the space after p. and pp. and "." after the number, but in the shorthand ones, they are mostly pp.67 or whatever with no space, and sometimes no dot after the number. It might be easier to switch it to make it more consistent with the book one? YellowMonkey (vote in the Southern Stars and White Ferns supermodel photo poll) 06:03, 22 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I uploaded the second batch of photos, by the way YellowMonkey (vote in the Southern Stars and White Ferns supermodel photo poll) 06:03, 22 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your help. Much appreciated! Put Hammond up for FAC, let's see what happens. Probably get slammed for being so long! I fixed the page refs (I think I got them all). I'll vote on the rest of the photos very shortly. --Sarastro1 (talk) 22:18, 22 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
No it won't. —Aaroncrick (talk) 04:45, 23 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Hammond is 57; Meckiff is 53 and hasn't had any problems as yet; Loxton was 49 and raised an eyebrow but no explicit complaint. Thanks for the memory jogger. Yes I do intend to try again perhaps late this month. I was trying to get the Port Adelaide one up to scratch—but ran out of interesting sources—or finish Fort Glanville with a good diagram; a 3-d isometric view would be great to show the structure but it is probably beyond the software I have. Over time I've fixed a few things but much of the text is still that which Tony, Laser Brain and Steve had issues with and I still have to copyedit it. I need to adopt Aaroncrick's perserverence...Anstey Hill is almost there, Fort Glanville has the material and needs copyediting etc..., I have the books now to finish Trams in Adelaide (though the article has become messier than I left it) and I know that a day at the State Library would provide enough material to finish off the River Torrens article. - Peripitus (Talk) 03:44, 19 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The Article Rescue Barnstar
The Rescue Barnstar is awarded to people who rescue articles from deletion. This can be independent of or in cooperation with the Article Rescue Squadron.

This Barnstar is awarded to YellowMonkey, for his work in referencing Australian BLPs on January 27th, showing the community that, first, referencing BLPs is fast and easy, and second, that fixing unreferenced BLPs can be done in a collaborative non-controversial and non-disruptive matter. Wikipedia desperately needs more editors like you. Thank you for your efforts to make the project a better place. Okip 10:45, 20 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

these editors are attempting every dirty trick possible to discourage opposition to their ideas, and silence different views. For example, currently I have a WP:AN and WP:ARBCOM/requests against me. Despite this, several editors have supported my proposal. I welcome your thoughts. Okip 12:10, 22 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I wouldn't worry about any policy changes as the chances of anyone bothering to implement it are pretty minimal. And as I said, I wonder if my comments got reverted?? on the AN/RFARB/RFC nobody checks to see if the refs work, and a lot of times at WP:FAR where the unsourced old FAs go, a lot of guys just ref the last sentence of the para and a lot of people assume it covers the whole para; not to mention the fact that many people just put in some ref that doesn't even agree; if people bother checking they might invent refs to obscure books that aren't in many libraries. But aside from dishonesty or incomplete reffing assumed to be complete, I doubt there will be enoug inspectors to do anything meaningful, and if they chop off 80% of an article for being unsourced, I think people will just add fake refs. I saw one case of a BLP Prod, the author just replaced it with a cut and paste with only 50% paraphrased a little bit. The other 50% of the sentences were untouched verbatim YellowMonkey (vote in the Southern Stars and White Ferns supermodel photo poll) 05:36, 23 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

    • Oh, and another two years of SRT at least. A double ton has those effects in Indian team selection. Did you see it? —SpacemanSpiff 01:37, 25 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
      • Well no, how big is this ground. It'd be funny if Ponting stayed fit and played for a long time and SRT decided to just keep on playing to stay ahead on the Tests. He might be still around at 42 and they won't drop him if he turns into Ranatunga and has a form slump for three years like Gangu because the riots will be much worse; he could just hang on like a rotten plum (or corrupt Asian politician). In any case India can't win the World Cup with this sub-first-class bowling attack; big matches are usually not high-scoring and batsmen are the first to crack; unless they win the toss in the QF, SF and F and make 300-350 batting first, they won't make it. Rangeblock isn't feasible, and it's him and he's also AdarshJain2 (talk · contribs), and I checked 5/6 of the cities articles, and they all look like overcrowded bulldozed slums. I didn't know that such a high proportion of these articles are just dumping grounds. Well in 2006-07, a lot of the main guys in WP India only did FAs (which were really easy in those days) on the basis that FAs were allegedly an iron-clad guarantee of quality, NPOV, scholarliness etc and that it was pointless to worry about rank and file articles. No wonder so many articles are such dumping grounds. And I should go on CU strike: Votes for CUs. Lol YellowMonkey (vote in the Southern Stars and White Ferns supermodel photo poll) 02:50, 25 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
        • Pretty small, I watched Ganguly get a ton and a half out there, but it's the fact that he's hit 200 that's going to keep him alive for a long time (kinda like Kapil Dev). As for this chap, it's not just that he uses the articles as dumping grounds, but he's been creating hoaxes like Khurai District which are absurd. He also expanded the population of Khurai to being larger than Bombay! I've left three notes so far on WT:INB, but hardly anyone takes a look beyond the obvious. The nonsense he's been adding are just too difficult. I'll finish my voting today. Did you check with Tintin? I think he follows women's cricket a bit, seen his edits on a few articles. —SpacemanSpiff 03:11, 25 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

RE: "Well I doubt many will care if the policies are obeyed as long as the bowing and scraping and 21-gun salute is there. It's pretty sad but you know a lot of brash admins who talk about cracking down on POV-pushers only crack down on those who talk back to them YellowMonkey"

That doesn't sound like the current arbitration committee members to me! how times have changed :) Hope things are going swimmingly in wikiproject Australia. Maybe you can help me find a job down there :) Okip 03:00, 24 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Nothing has changed really. Wikipedians have always voted for people who will sit quietly and turn a blind eye to their POV pushing or whatever. Many people are happy to reciprocate, really, until their ego gets tangled. There are no jobs down there. No titles of questionable value. They are very anti-bureaucracy and formalisms. People just do what they want; many people disagree on one issue and agree on others, and there isn't any concern shutting up for fear of political retribution or popularity, or turning a blind eye to problems to preserve high ratings (see below). If someone decided to do all this political fluff they would get ignored at AWNB YellowMonkey (vote in the Southern Stars and White Ferns supermodel photo poll) 08:30, 24 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Why did you leave? —Aaroncrick (talk) 04:32, 24 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
It's not useful in anyway. If you want to influence anything meaningful, you need to have no policy or sit on the fence all day. You can't win an election if you speak up in disputes, revert people's edits claiming POV etc because they'll get their co-religionists and ethnic buddies to come and oppose you. Secondly, most arb cases, the result can be wroked out by looking at the the power balance between the two parties, and so it's meaningless. People only pay attention if it is a big, saucy case, most of these are irrelevant ego-battles and personality clashes between admins completely unrelated to content, but some snub from earlier, even though they might be disguised as POV/RS or some content violation. In those cases, since the arbs have high approval ratings, adn get voted up mostly by sitting on the fence and not offending anyone, they usually vote for the stronger guy even when he was the troublemaker, or a stalemate if both parties are roughly equal. If it is an obscure case, often a content-oriented case, they usually just pile on without worrying much. Many cases like this got < 5 posts on the mailing list when I was there, and some zero (excluding the "please vote in this case" messages) whereas the usual political ego ones get 500+ sometimes, as whatever the outcome is, right or wrong decision, nobody with any influence knows or cares and it won't come back to bite. Arbs tend to bow to some warlord threatening to give them a headache; sometimes they go on the mailing list and bag and even make abusive comments about some guy, then they vote against sanctions on-wiki. This happens with normal admins as well; some controversial blocks/unblocks get 100% support on open discussion on-wiki but if it was secret ballot, the result would be totally different. Some admin actions I took weren't overturned and not questioned much in debate on ANI, but most guys didn't agree, but as their decision making is governed by "what if I cop 20 opposes if I decide to run for some election in the future?....better just be a yes man" then they can't affect what happens, apart from futile mumbling on IRC and hoping some other random person gets stuck in for them. I never threatened to vote against them or snub them, but if the 95%+ approval rating is what they want, that's their prerogative. If anyone wants to have a big say on the obscure content cases, they can often make unilateral decisions and nobody cares, in which case there is no need to wait for or join any arbcom. The main benefits of occupying a high post are that people will fawn and brown-nose everywhere, usually so the arb will appoint them a CU, or an arb or Cu-clerk, which is a traditional way of climbing up to higher posts. But going for political pleasure or dodgy deals rather than substance can backfire. Many people on-wiki are concerned about their image and won't fight, so they engage in my enemy's enemy is my friend, or just get a silly disciple to do it for them. Sometimes it breaks down when they fall out and they can't get rid of their old allies as their friends and them won't fight and can only groan among themselves. I know some people who got CU by socialising on IRC with arbs (the arbs ususally went "never heard of this guy" and don't consider them) and after that the arbs regretted it because of some political thing they did. But that happened for a reason. Sweet words are seldom true. So being flooded with false roses with with poison on the inside is irrelevant. Being a nominally important guy can also get you appearances at wikiconferences, interviews with newspapers, TV time, BBC etc, but these are also irrelevant, as the warlords can break the rules whenever they feel like it and bully the arbs whenever they want, unless one's priority is to start a personality cult, or put this stuff on their CV, or feel more beautiful, or commit some RL fraud or seomthing. Most of the warlords are anon, never go to meetups etc, but they're the power behind the throne, not that I have any, but I don't need this fluff and every clown fawning over me telling me I'm a great wise leader or some other rubbish. Ponting

[edit]

Bits will get removed and so forth and I don't really care anymore. I haven't even been here very long, probably just bored. Ponting's the only challenge left. Although, when I started all I wanted to do was become and admin - don't ask me why - and now I couldn't care less, lol. My interest may return - and look I've reverted some more vandalism than usual :) —Aaroncrick (talk) 07:49, 25 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
