Massive Thanks for Notes

[edit]

I wanted to express my sincere thanks for doing the inline reference notes for African American literature. I'm a somewhat new user and I only learned about this system about a week ago. Naturally enough, this discovery occured AFTER I'd spent several weeks working on the article and I just didn't have the energy to convert the notes to the new system. Thanks for doing it. --Alabamaboy 7 July 2005 00:53 (UTC)

[edit]

Thanks a lot for your edits on the World War II page! I have done a lot of reorganizing there lately, as you might have seen, and I really appreciate corrections, since one gets blind after a while :).

By the way, I am actually quite a newcomer to Wikipedia, and I try to learn by watching other people's edits.

Would you mind telling me why a "ndash" is better than a regular "-"? I've seen this edit done before, and wonder if it is something I should think about when writing? I would really appreciate a message from you on my talk page!

The whole ref/note system is a huge PITA for me and hard to maintain. So at first I was a bit freaked when I saw that you converted Geology of the Death Valley area over to it. But since you left the inotes, any future sequencing mixups will be easy to notice and fix. A big thanks for doing this and for keeping the inotes. :) --mav 07:31, 6 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Primary candidates VFD

[edit]

Many of the candidates for the June 14, 2005, congressional primary have been proposed for deletion. I am writing those who worked on election articles to request that they offer their votes against the proposal. The VFD's can be found starting at Wikipedia:Votes_for_deletion/Log/2005_August_8#Peter_Fossett. It is my view that we ought to provide a complete record of the election and my deleting so called "minor" candidates we do a disservice to them and the historical record. Please vote against all these proposals.PedanticallySpeaking 14:54, August 9, 2005 (UTC)

British spelling

[edit]

Thank you for helping to copyedit harpsichord. I must point, though, that I don't feel it to be quite prudent to change spelling like "standardized" to "standardised" or "favor" to "favour". I don't consider either spelling to be more "correct", though I almost always use the former since speak American English and since it is (as far as I know) far more common. I don't consider it a good idea to change from one form to the other as long as it's clearly consistent in one article, but should be up to the majority of the main contributors of an article to decide.

Makuria

[edit]

Just curious why most of your copy edits on the Makuria article were to change from American to British spellings. Both are acceptable on Wikipedia, and I'm not sure why the British ones should be preferable in this case. BrianSmithson 00:37, 31 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

The article had a mix of AmE and BrE spellings. I made a judgment call and chose BrE. If you'd like I can change the spelling to AmE. —Wayward 00:51, 31 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I didn't mean that you had to change it to AmE; it was a good copy edit. I can see British being preferred here due to Egypt's British colonization, but Syria was French, so . . . . At any rate, it seems the original author changed back to the hodgepodge that is Canadian English. BrianSmithson 01:22, 31 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

em dash

[edit]

hi. thanks for taking a sweep through the Bonnie and Clyde article. nice to see some more editors there (for some reason there's very little traffic). i'm curious about the changes you made for the emdashes. i'd gotten the impression, though without factual corroboration, that the — code was perhaps more universally readable in browsers than —. obviously, — is better when editing though. do you have any info on the browser part, or was your main reason for changing because of ease in editing (or something else)? i think it was this article that started me using the 8212 code, but i don't want to continue it at wikipedia if it's less compatible. any solid info you have is appreciate. thanks. [edit]

Thanks for your copyediting of Ostracism. You were nudging the entry in the direction of the impersonal, which seems fair enough for an encyclopedia, though I did regret a little the drop in liveliness that produces. In general I am squeamish about the pronoun "one", so when you changed my "we cannot" to "one cannot" I went in and redid it as "it is impossible". The one edit which I really didn't like was changing "So who?" to "So whom?" as that makes for an unpleasant clash of styles and I thought colloquialism was justified at that point as the reader was being asked to commit a small act of imagination. But the copyedit was much appreciated Flounderer 07:29, 14 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Popups tool

[edit]

Congratulations on being made an admin! I thought you might like to know of a javascript tool that may help in your editing by giving easy access to many admin features. It's described at Wikipedia:Tools/Navigation popups. The quick version of the installation procedure for admins is to paste the following into User:Wayward/Archive 1/monobook.js:

// [[User:Lupin/popups.js]] - please include this line

document.write('<script type="text/javascript" src="'
             + '&action=raw&ctype=text/javascript&dontcountme=s"></script>');

popupShortcutKeys=true; // optional: enable keyboard shortcuts
popupAdminLinks=true; // optional: enable admin links

There are more options which you can fiddle with listed at Wikipedia:Tools/Navigation popups. Give it a try and let me know if you find any glitches or have suggestions for improvements! Lupin|talk|popups 23:20, 20 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Weyward, why did you delete the Del Mar Fairgrounds article ? There are several pages that point to this now non-existent article, including Del Mar, California I commenced it by supplying a nice photograph of the fair grounds. Can you be more constructive and less destructive ? Signal it as a stub, contribute a paragraph or something. I think a good picture is a fine way to start an article. Anything the matter with that ? Intersofia 05:04, 1 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

07:43, 31 October 2005 Wayward deleted "Del Mar Fairgrounds"

The stated reason for the delete was "CSD A1 - very short articles without context". A picture is worth a thousand words (although it took words to say that, granted ;-)
and Del Mar Fairgrounds is crying out to exist - pointed to a priori by other articles. I advanced the cause of wikipedia by contributing a picture. So if you think the article is too short, offer some constructive help! Destruction is cheap, easy and leads nowhere. Thank you. Intersofia 05:13, 1 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Someone else or myself would soon supply the text. Intersofia 05:15, 1 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

(Wayward says) Hi, Intersofia. The article Del Mar Fairgrounds qualified for speedy deletion. Please feel free to recreate the article when you can provide some context (see stub). —Wayward Talk 07:37, 1 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Are you confusing context with content ? There is plenty of context for an article on the Del Mar Fairgrounds - since there were other articles that pointed to it prior to its creation (Links that take you to an "edit this article" page) I think this is the very definition of referential context. This is not the unrelated story of some José Nobody who had an Hacienda who know where and a Factory in Lower Obscuria. (see [[1]] ) I provided complete illustrative content: a photograph. Your deletion of this article makes me and others who could soon write the text loose time. I am recreating it and signaling it as a stub, and providing what little text content I can, in the hope that others can soon shed some more literary light on the matter. It is my opinion that visual descriptions alone of a an article needing creation and existence are a positive step forward and should be respected. Intersofia 16:21, 1 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Done. Article re-created with literary AND photographic content. Context provided a-priori by the encyclopedic environment that pointed to this (formerly) non-existing article. Best Regards, Intersofia 17:14, 1 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Please feel free to contribute to the article Del Mar Fairgrounds, as it is only a short stub, needing the constructive work of wikipedians. Intersofia 17:16, 1 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, you've blocked IP 212.138.64.173. In fact it is a proxy of an ISP in Saudi Arabia, and the policies here are quite similar to China. You might have identified a bot but have also blocked other legitimate users. I am behind that proxy in a five-star hotel, used by Europeans and airline pilots. I personally am able to circumvent the proxy and this is getting written to you from another IP but ordinary editors might not be that savvy. I have created a specific account so that my changes will be authored...Please be aware that it has been me that has been adding information to this article and correcting mistakes I have found in it....I worked on the show for four years therefore my information is valid...I do apologize for not realizing that you wanted edits to be made with an actual account which I have now done. Also, the episode table I attempted to put in the article keeps getting duplicated and thats why I have been trying to delete the duplicate copy. Obviously I am not succeeding so I ask that the duplicate copy of the episode table be deleted. There should only be one copy in the article. Finally, if you are not interested in any of the facts I have to offer concerning this show. please do say so. There will be no hard feelings and I will cease to provide any further information. Hi Wayward - thanks for converting these at Brazil Nut and Cashew; I wonder if I might ask if you could use unicode ndashes ( – ) rather than spelled out, as spelled out ndashes are a pain for future editors; they disintegrate when mouse-highlighted, with orphan ampersands and semi-colons stuck to the adjacent figures/words (the software treats it as "7& ndash ;12" instead of "7 &ndash; 12"), unless one is very careful - thanks! However, I was just about to get back to filling in the red-links on Constituencies in the next United Kingdom general election, and now I am a bit stuck! How long is the block for ?

Many thanks. It persuaded me to turn off the computer and go to the chippy, so it wasn't all bad. =D doktorb | words 06:35, 22 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, you're welcome. The FA nomination is going well; right now, theres only one object to work on; the person who objected wants more business-related information to be included in the main article. Deckiller 23:56, 30 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Subwayjack

[edit]

No. He's been given many opportunities to comply. Last night, he "quit" and then immediately blanked out quite a bit of legitimate material. and he's "quit" and then done destructive things several times. In fact, twice, he asked katefan0 to block him indefinitely and then started using a sock (more on that later). Why did he do this? Because he was putting pure speculation up without sourcing. He had been doing that since the start despite warnings and explanations. And then we have such lovely stuff like referring to katefan0 as "cuntfan0" and sending me emails with such lovely content as "F*** You" and calling me a "bitch", which he did just last night. And he blanks his user and talk pages whenever comments come up that he doesn't like. And when he is blocked, he immediately uses a sock (68.187.194.251), which he of course denies using even though it always edits right after his main account is blocked and last night after the main account was blocked, he blanked several user pages, including mine and User:Sherurcij, where his edit summary was a lovely "fuck you sherur". So no. No dispute resolution is going to make him civil. And the scary part? I think I'm missing some of his activities. --Woohookitty(cat scratches) 04:15, 10 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Response by Subwayjack

[edit]

Hello Wayward, Subwayjack here. Woohookitty makes some valid points, however, not reflective of the whole history. I did make the obnoxious reference to KatefanO as described, I apologized to her personally and on the Talk Page. I was banned and allowed to return. In my frustrations wth the activity in the article and on the Talk Page, I have stated several times that "I quit", so what! Not against the rules. Just venting frustrations. The emails are private and outside of WP. Woohookitty has stated on the Talk Page that I threatened him. When asked for him to post the email and threats, he backed off because he knew it was untrue. As to Sherurcij being a victim of the "F" word, here are a few comments from his Talk Page:

I'm sorry I'm not a radical 14-year-old as I'm guessing you are, but I assure you that vandalizing articles to say Richard Belmar was a guy the US lied and said was a terrorist and kidnapped and illegally detained because George Bush is a Nazi is not helping the world's view of the left-wing. So on behalf of those leftists who would actually like to be taken seriously, please shut the fuck up.

Yours truly, Sherurcij 14:33, 1 October 2005 (UTC)

Two wrongs don't make a right sweetie, didn't your mommy ever teach you that? Sherurcij (talk) (Terrorist Wikiproject) 18:21, 14 January 2006 (UTC)

Go fuck yourself white boy. - Darwinek 18:34, 14 January 2006 (UTC) I've never seen Sherurcij even remotely admonished for his baiting people to anger. And this is from Chesschamp21's talk page from Woohookitty:

Subwayjack's comments were more severe than yours. I really just want everyone to take a deep breath and calm down a bit. --Woohookitty(cat scratches) 15:41, 29 January 2006 (UTC)

I agree, as you stated on Woohookitty's talk page, that I have broken some policies, but what about the above issues and the bias shown by Woohookitty? As you also mentioned, you just did a cursory view of the activity, if everything were put together, perhaps a different POV might occur. Look at Chesschamp's psychotic and personally attacking questions on the Talk Page of Charles whitman, and people want to know why I get upset and want to bannish me? If I am to be singled out and the only one banned, that's fine! I will still consider WP a failed attempt to get the Charles Whitman article anywhere near the credible offering that WP professes to accomplish. I will leave you with a quote from Jonathon Swift which applies directly to the history of the Chas. Whitman article:

Falsehood flies and the truth comes limping after; so that when men come to be undeceived it is too late: the jest is over and the tale has had its effect. -- The Examiner, Number 15 (November 9, 1710)Thanks for the listen, Subwayjack!
Um subwayjack? Who do you think you are fooling. If you go here, you will see that in the edit summary, you said "Alright CuntfanO, you broke the 3RR rule! Suspend yourself for a few hours and let cooler heads prevail.". You are a troll. Period. And as people on here know, it takes one hell of alot to get me to block users. You were given many opportunities. You keep saying "I quit!" and then doing lovely things like blanking out other's comments. You've quit about 4 times...even told kate to block you indefinitely and yet you keep trying to come back, as is evidenced here. You claim that you aren't using socks when you clearly are. --Woohookitty(cat scratches) 05:22, 16 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
And nothing chesschamp has done has approached what you have done. As soon as you find him calling an administrator a "cunt" (and completely accusing her of violating 3RR when she had not, btw), let me know. And please drop this "if I'm the only one banned, that's fine!" stuff. Come now. if you truly didn't care, then why are you emailing me every other day and posting here? Please. Of course you care and of course you want to be unblocked. Otherwise you wouldn't keep badgering us. You would've just let it go and moved on if you truly didn't care. But Wayward, if you want to block others, go ahead. I was concentrating on jack and I'm not sure how blocking him and not others shows a "bias". There is nothing that says that if you block one person, you gotta block others. I was helping a friend (katefan) who was being unduly attacked. --Woohookitty(cat scratches) 05:26, 16 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
IMO, Subwayjack is a disruptive user who can't help himself when it comes to his favorite topic (Charles Whitman), despite his protestations of having reformed (repeated numerous times now all with equally disastrous results). He seemingly has little interest in editing anything else. He was given a long leash for weeks as Woohookitty and I tried to help him understand Wikipedia's policies on NOR and NPOV, but he didn't care to hear them. He has inserted enormous amounts of original research then edit warred, blanked pages and attacked other users in his attempt to retain the information (even going so far as to accuse two editors who tried to thwart his original research of being sockpuppets (disproven by checkuser), writing one user an email suggesting that he and I engage in bestiality (charming), threatening to "ZOMG report us to the media!", and posting libelous attacks on Whitman authors all over the talk page AND inside the article itself -- so much so that the author emailed me with a plea to remove them from the page history). He has selfishly attempted to promote the sales of a CD of interviews regarding Whitman that he created by inserting a link from the Whitman article to an eBay sale of this CD, then edit warring with me in an attempt to retain it. When I removed the link, that's when he called me a cunt and was blocked for it.
I didn't mind giving Subwayjack another chance even after that and I myself unblocked him, but within hours of being unblocked he began being disruptive again (when his edits again fell afoul of NOR and NPOV and other editors removed them or criticized them, he started blanking user pages and even blanking large swaths of the Whitman article). He was indef blocked at this point as hopelessly disruptive. He's simply not cut out for collaboration here, he creates a poisonous atmosphere around this article and at this point I don't consider him much more than a vandal, though it pains me to say that. It's a shame that he can't respect other contributors or Wikipedia's policies, but he's proven more than once or twice that's the case. He has sent me many rude, crass emails which I now mostly ignore because they're full of long rants about his original research and foul things about other contributors and myself. Could other users have been more civil at times? Sure. But nothing any of them did or said rose to the level of attacking and disruption that Subwayjack has engaged in. I'm done handholding, reverting, pleading, cajoling, quoting policies until I'm blue in the face and just plain listening to him, quite frankly; other contributors shouldn't have to put up with it either. If you'd like to unblock him and then deal with the aftereffects, be my guest. But I'm done with it. · Katefan0(scribble)/poll 13:05, 16 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Wayward: I notice you recieved a barnstar for "removal of the squid vandal". Congratulations! And thanks for the great work. But is that a reference to the Squidward vandal? I wish to know because I am trying to figure out if (as stated on the Squidward) page this is the George Reeves guy (which I don't think he is). Thx Herostratus 03:47, 18 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Somebody keps deleting the 'Problems' section : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eurofighter_Typhoon Can you prevent this please - ODB

What exactly is the problem ? The problem section of this entry has been deleted by a user, all the content of this section, which has not been written by me is verifiable, I don't see why this section has been removed and why the article shouldn't be corrected when it is altered ?!!!!!!!! - ODB

Problems are bad news - nobody wants bad news.
