I'd like a second opinion
Could you compare this article expansion to the EB source? It's looking like a problematic close paraphrase to me since it even follows the same structure, but something's bugging me about tagging it so I thought I'd run it past someone else. :/ VernoWhitney (talk) 22:16, 6 July 2010 (UTC)
- Hmm. I don't really see it. Can you give some examples? Theleftorium (talk) 07:26, 7 July 2010 (UTC)
- After looking through it again today I think most of what caught my eye was the same topics in the same order, but I did notice at least a couple of obvious overlaps, such as article:
One of the first scientific descriptions of the mountains was published in 1770–71. The region was studied by such Russian scientists as geologist Alexander Karpinsky, botanist P.N. Krylov and zoologist L.P. Sabaneev, as well as by the German naturalist Alexander von Humboldt and the English geologist Sir Roderick Murchison. Murchison had compiled the first geologic map of the Urals in 1841.

The first serious scientific study of the Urals was made in 1770–71. Scholars studying the Urals during the 19th century included several Russian scientists, such as the geologist A.D. Karpinsky, the botanist P.N. Krylov, and the zoologist L.P. Sabaneev, and also such prominent foreign scholars as the German naturalist Alexander von Humboldt and the English geologist Sir Roderick Murchison, who compiled the first geologic map of the Urals in 1841.
- along with article:
Most lakes are concentrated in the eastern slope of the Southern and Central Urals, such as the Uvildy, Itkul, Turgoyak, and Tavatuy lakes. The western slope also has lakes, but those are significantly smaller. The lakes of Polar Ural fill deep glacial valleys, the deepest being the Lake Bolshoye Shchuchye (136 m or 446 feet). Some lakes have medicinal muds and the associated spas and sanatoriums.

In the Polar Urals, lakes occur in glacial valleys, the deepest of them being Lake Bolshoye Shchuchye, at 446 feet deep. Medicinal muds are common in a number of the lakes, such as Moltayevo, and spas and sanatoriums have been established.

- Hmm... I can't really decide if that's problematic or not. It's borderline, though. I think it's best to ask Moonriddengirl. Sorry that I couldn't be of more help. Theleftorium (talk) 11:46, 7 July 2010 (UTC)
- I agree that it's kind of borderline. I don't think I'd tag, but do what I always do in such cases: "If in doubt, write the content yourself, thereby creating a new copyrighted work which can be included in Wikipedia without trouble." Before I take a shot at it, let me ask: are there other passages that seem particularly troublesome? I could review it myself, but I'm being lazy. And having a lot to do both in RL and on Wikipedia. :) --Moonriddengirl (talk) 16:38, 7 July 2010 (UTC)
- I'll look over it again later, and see what else pops out at me. VernoWhitney (talk) 16:45, 7 July 2010 (UTC)
- After looking it over again, I spotted one other section that bugs me more than the rest. Article:
After World War II, a plutonium-producing facility was established in the Southern Urals in Chelyabinsk-40 and Chelyabinsk-65 (now Ozyorsk. It produced plutonium from 1949 until 1990. In the 1950s-60s, the plant regularly dumped much radioactive waste into the Techa River and Lake Karachay, and the accidents brought more radioactive pollution. In 1957, 23,000 square kilometers (9,000 square mi) were contaminated as a result of a storage tank explosion.
- Source:
Following World War II the Soviet Union established a plutonium-producing facility in the Southern Urals near what is now Ozersk, Russia. It produced its first plutonium in 1949 and continued production until 1990. During the first decade of its operation, the plant dumped large amounts of radioactive waste into the Techa River and the nearby Lake Karachay. A number of serious accidents at the plant caused the release of additional radioactive material into the environment; for example, in 1957 the explosion of a storage tank resulted in the contamination of 9,000 square miles (23,000 square kilometres) of land. Consequently, the inhabitants of the region have suffered increased rates of cancer and other major health problems.
- Everything else has been reorganized and mixed around more than these three I pointed out, so if the two of you feel that even these are borderline then the remainder should be fine. VernoWhitney (talk) 23:07, 7 July 2010 (UTC)

Can you handle this CP listing?
Wanås Castle. Supposedly an unusably close paraphrase of [1]. Rather than go through google translate, I thought you might, well, you know. Just read it? :) It's listed at Wikipedia:Copyright problems/2010 July 4. --Moonriddengirl (talk) 15:51, 14 July 2010 (UTC)

Hey, Scorpion appears away, can you help me identify a voice on commentary for The Wizard of Evergreen Terrace just after 18:55 can you tell me the two people who visit the real Edison museum? Images
Hi, Leftorium you are incorrect on your assumption. I'm an avid cricket fan and so is my family. However the picture I have of Hanif Mohammad was not mine and therefore I've removed it from his infobox but you can delete the file as I don't know where it is stored. Wiki id2(talk) 09:32, 18 July 2010 (UTC)
- Because I've uploaded the images onto my Flickr account and sell some of them to these websites. These are my images I'm the holder and the flickr one wa a freebie the others I've sold of. E.g. cricistan is a website used by Pakistanis to find information about their cricket team. Wiki id2(talk) 10:50, 18 July 2010 (UTC)
- The name is paddynapper. Wiki id2(talk) 11:07, 18 July 2010 (UTC)
- Why should I. I only want them to be used on wikipedia. Because it's there with my knowledge and has my full consent. I'm happy with the content on my flickr account. If I do change the rights then it could be used on other websites. I don't want that. These are my pictures I own them and have there rights. There are many other notable paksitani crickters whose pictures I don't have e.g. Kamran Akmal and Mushtaq Mohammad, Ijaz Ahmed, Rameez Raja, Aaqib Javed, Javed Miandad and Asif Iqbal and they don't have pictures on wikipedia which are uploaded by me. Wiki id2(talk) 11:17, 18 July 2010 (UTC)
- If your point is correct then in the image licensing why is there an option that says "All rights reserved". So if your point is correct why is that option available if I change the licensing of the images to all rights reserved and the content still can't be used by anyone but me! You are incorrect in the licensing saga as well Wiki id2(talk) 11:30, 18 July 2010 (UTC)
- You said that "A Wikipedia-only license is not acceptable on this website. Wikipedia's goal is to provide content that anyone can use. If you don't want others to use your images than they will have to be deleted." So if your statement is correct I can upload an image and in the licensing section rather than the current license on the wikipedia I can change it to "All rights reserved" so if that option is available (that I can change my image license to all rights reserved]) then the statment above in quotes isnt' valid. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Wiki id2 (talk • contribs)
- No thats not correct I can provide copyrighted images of a person because I own those images. They are under my control. It doesnt say that in the terms and conditions. Wiki id2(talk) 11:47, 18 July 2010 (UTC)
- Have a look at this example http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Sebastian_Vettel_Cracow.JPG he is a living person and his image has been copyrighted. Wiki id2(talk) 11:48, 18 July 2010 (UTC)
- I see in that case I'll change the license to all rights reserved for certain images which are more valuable to me than others e.g. Mohammad Sami and Mohammad Aamer as I've spent more time taking a good picture Wiki id2(talk) 11:53, 18 July 2010 (UTC)
- Yes I can I own them show me where it says that specifically in the terms and conditions. I can reserve the rights of my image. It's my freedom and my right you can't take that right from me and it doesn't exist in the wikipedia terms and conditions I've sent you an example of Sebastian Vettel above there are many other Images with a same setting as mine. Wiki id2(talk) 12:00, 18 July 2010 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of Joel Kinnaman
A tag has been placed on Joel Kinnaman requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a person or group of people, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable, as well as our subject-specific notability guideline for biographies. You may also wish to consider using a Wizard to help you create articles - see the Article Wizard.
If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}}
to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag - if no such tag exists then the page is no longer a speedy delete candidate and adding a hangon tag is unnecessary), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the page does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that they userfy the page or have a copy emailed to you. mboverload@ 20:34, 18 July 2010 (UTC)

Okay. Can you tell me where I can find a criteria for notability of academic institutions/schools? The Ali Kids Campus article is a two line article with no sources at all and is only a day care center. It has hardly any notability in its region. Thanks! Farjad0322 (talk) 14:08, 22 July 2010 (UTC)
Silliman memorial lectures
I don't think you bothered to look at the discussion page before you accused me of using copyright material. I pointed out there that the section in question had been used for at least 100 years and was therefore out of copyright.
An example is at http://www.questia.com/read/53186245 - look at page v. The book is called Irritability and was published in 1913.
I am a little cautious about simply rolling back your change. I followed CorenSearchBot's instruction and it didn't succeed in discouraging you. So what should I do? It seems silly to paraphrase the material which is definitely not within copyright restrictions. Chris55 (talk) 19:23, 22 July 2010 (UTC)
- ok. I've used the 1913 version and put in the right citation. Ok? Chris55 (talk) 20:47, 22 July 2010 (UTC)
Have now put in a source-attribution. Could I suggest that you liaise with the author of CorenSearchBot to improve the message it leaves? Thanks. Chris55 (talk) 09:16, 23 July 2010 (UTC)

I know that User:Esuzu is still working on the article (although he's been rather inactive this month) and he's only been able to work on the Biography section so far. The Linnaean taxonomy and Commemoration sections are still almost completely unreferenced and require more work. The article is therefore not ready yet. Theleftorium (talk) 21:57, 25 July 2010 (UTC)

Thanks. Still get a bit to do on it and then it'll be off to GAN. Sorry, but what claim to notability? "Its founder is Dick Hubbard, who stepped down as CEO from 2004-2007 to serve as the mayor of Auckland." is the nearest thing - and so? He stepped down to become mayor. What's that got to do with the notability of the company? That's him personally. The article is just a vanity/spam thing, which I have been watching for a while. There's no attempt to reference it, and it consists mainly of a product list. Peridon (talk) 20:48, 30 July 2010 (UTC)

WikiCup 2010 July newsletter
We are half-way through our penultimate round, and nothing is yet certain. Pool A, currently led by Sasata (submissions) has ended up the more competitive, with three contestants ( Sasata (submissions), Sturmvogel_66 (submissions) and TonyTheTiger (submissions)) scoring over 500 points already. Pool B is led by Casliber (submissions), who has also scored well over 500. The top two from each pool, as well as the next four highest scorers regardless of pool, will make it through to our final eight. As ever, anything you worry may not receive the necessary attention before the end of the round (such as outstanding GA or FA nominations) is welcome at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews, and please remember to continue offering reviews yourself where possible. As always, the judges are available to contact via email, IRC or their talk pages, and general discussion about the Cup is welcome on the WikiCup talk page.
Planning has begun for the 2011 WikiCup, with open discussions concerning scoring and flags for next year's competition. Contributions to those discussions would be appreciated, especially concerning the flags, as next year's signups cannot begin until the flag issue has been resolved. Signups will hopefully open at some point in this round, with discussion about possible changing in the scoring/process opening some time afterwards.
Earlier this round, we said goodbye to Hunter Kahn (submissions), who has bowed out to spend more time on the book he is authoring with his wife. We wish him all the best. In other news, the start of this round also saw some WikiCup awards sent out by Suomi Finland 2009 (submissions). We appreciate his enthusiasm, and contestants are of course welcome to award each other prizes as they see fit, but rest assured that we will be sending out "official" awards at the end of the competition. If you wish to start receiving or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Bart's House of Weirdness
Hey, absolutely! Glad to see you're putting some work into that one. It's not very long, so here is the full text. BOZ (talk) 03:46, 1 August 2010 (UTC)
The Simpsons: Bart’s House of Weirdness
Konami PC/MS-DOS version $49.95 Without a doubt, Bart’s House of Weirdness is one of the best arcade games we’ve played. It also happens to be one Konami’s best products!
As Bart Simpson, you have six adventures to complete. Each time you encounter an alien or a bug and it bumps into your character, the Cool-O-Meter reveals a loss of coolness. Find a cool item, and you increase your coolness. With such weapons as a Burp Gun, Water Balloons, or Spray Gun, you can (using your joy stick or keyboard) keep the bugs away from you for a time.
Hey, don’t have a cow—this is really a fun arcade game. You not only get to participate in Bart’s favorite TV show, but you also help Maggie find her ball as well as find Krusty in Krustyland. There are two modes for your joy stick. The first mode is best applied to adventures where shooting skill is required, and the second is for adventures where jumping is necessary. This game is available for EGA and MCGA/CGA, and can use either AdLib, Roland, or SoundBlaster sound. With superb Roland sound (the TV show theme and opening animations are quite good) and smooth animation, our only wish is that Konami would consider releasing this fine arcade delight with full VGA support sometime in the future. If you like Bart and really enjoy arcade games, you have to get this one.
- Hey, that's great to hear - good luck! :) BOZ (talk) 13:34, 1 August 2010 (UTC)
- Also, I've been thinking about this one. It seems like it might need more expansion, as it's a bit short, but it may pass GA anyway. One VG article I worked up to GA mostly by myself was Pool of Radiance, although Bart probably doesn't need to be anywhere that long. :) I would say you might want to find at least one screenshot, though. Romanization for words of English origin
On the MOS:JP talk page, a discussion has been started about including or not including romanizations for words of English origin, such as Fainaru Fantajī in Final Fantasy (ファイナルファンタジー, Fainaru Fantajī) (for the sake of simplicity, I called this case "words of English origin", more information on semantics here).
Over the course of a month, it has become apparent that both the parties proposing to include or not include those romanizations cannot be convinced by the arguments or guidelines brought up by the other side. Therefore, a compromise is trying to be found that will satisfy both parties. One suggestion on a compromise has been given already, but it has not found unanimous agreement, so additional compromises are encouraged to be suggested.
One universally accepted point was to bring more users from the affected projects in to help achieve consensus, and you were one of those selected in the process.
What this invitation is:
- You should give feedback on the first suggested compromise and are highly encouraged to provide other solutions.
What this invitation is not:
- This is not a vote on including or excluding such romanizations.
- This is not a vote on compromises either.
It would be highly appreciated if you came over to the MOS:JP talk page and helped find a solution. Thank you in advance. Prime Blue (talk) 11:38, 8 August 2010 (UTC)

- 2 78.23.54.236 - I am not entirely sure about this one. Edited articles on Medieval Serbian history with factually no evidence of affiliation with Ajdebre, so it is anyone's guess really.
- 3 84.217.193.19 - Similar to above, however, the addition of succession boxes in Articles: 1 and 2 mimics that of

I did an IP Whois lookup, and they all pointed to Amsterdam, Netherlands.
Some of the things that User:Ajdebre has in common with the sockpuppets are that he posts references from Google Books from their Swedish servers.

All-in-all, Ajdrebre and these supposed sockpuppets of his are known to edit articles regarding Medieval Serbian history, and even Serbian culture judging from the range of contributions made by some of the users listed. The most recent sockpuppet, Kovac09, has not made and edit since 3 August 2010, but I do believe that Ajdebre will strike again sometime soon if not later. I admit, I should have notified the Administrators' noticeboard with this information, but I did not for the reason that, disregarding the fact that he has made several copyright violations, the edits he has made have been very helpful in providing knowledge of a topic that is very vast yet minimal here on Wikipedia. I hope this information will further help with your (ongoing?) investigation. Cheers! --Kilibarda (talk) 20:58, 12 August 2010 (UTC)
The Greatest Story Ever Doh'd
Hello Lefty.
I've restored the edits to the pop culture references, as they are incredibly obvious; I can well see some obsccurity requiring a reference but if such obvious things had to have a reference, wouldn't there be one footnote with every item in the plot? An example is Homer singing lyrics to Maurice Jarre's theme to Lawrence of Arabia. What reference should be quoted? The tune is obvious and fits in the story. To those who haven't heard of Lawrence of Arabia,The Greatest Story Ever Told or the Golden Calf can see the films or look things up for themselves. When the tour guide talks about shooting people at Entebbe a person not knowing what he is talking about can see the Wikipedia link. What reference as a footnote would be made for that? Shall we limit every footnote of popular culture to an official press release or interview?
Yes, there are people who have a variety of obscure theories that would require justification, and some producers may want to disguise their references lest they face a lawsuit, but a spoof is protected. The references will add to a reader's education and let them enjoy the episodes once they see them several times.Foofbun (talk) 23:54, 12 August 2010 (UTC)
- Hi. I'm sorry but that's not how Wikipedia works. Please read the second paragraph in Wikipedia:No original research. You're right about Lawrence of Arabia though, that is also original research and I've removed it. Unless it explicitly stated in the episode, we can't use it without a source. How to comment at copyright problems?
I am beginning to pay attention to the Copyright problems page, and I noticed you edit there. I want to point out that the CorenSearchBot seems to have a false positive with Kubrilesque, but the article has other problems, namely conflict of interest and no citation to independent sources to show notability. I have explained the issues at the article talk page, but would like your help with the best way to make a notation at the copyright problems page. Jc3s5h (talk) 23:58, 12 August 2010 (UTC)
- Hi. :) If you find a false positive at WP:SCV, just make a small note underneath it such as "No copyright concern: false positive" (it seems User:VernoWhitney has already done this with Kubrilesque, though). Template:SCV is really useful for that. As for the COI and notability issues, those should generally not be noted at WP:SCV. Wikipedia:Conflict of interest/Noticeboard is probably better, or you can just nominate the article at AfD. Regards, Theleftorium (talk) 08:18, 13 August 2010 (UTC)

I saw you checked and cleared this one, reported by CorenSearchBot as a copyvio. I have had these inexplicable bot warnings before, and find them annoying and disturbing. The bot owner does not respond to requests for explanation. Is there a forum where the bot can be discussed? My guess is that 5% of the bot's logic gets 99% of the readily detectable problems, straight cut-and-paste issues, and there is another 95% of the logic that tries to be smarter, does not work well and causes damage. Aymatth2 (talk) 20:36, 13 August 2010 (UTC)
- Hi. Sorry about that. I would contact Coren, but he hasn't edited since July 20. There is a sneaky way you can avoid the bot though: create articles in your userspace and then move them directly to the namespace. That way they don't show up on Special:NewPages. :) Theleftorium (talk) 20:43, 13 August 2010 (UTC)
Thanks, but this one is really bugging me. I suppose I can personally find work-arounds or just ignore the occasional warning, but I would prefer an open community discussion before accepting that the bot cannot and should not be improved. We are desperately short of serious editors, and this kind of unjustified slap in the face is destructive. I will write an essay, post it somewhere and invite comment. Thanks anyway, Aymatth2 (talk) 22:52, 13 August 2010 (UTC)

CSBot notices
Hi. After conversation with Aymatth2 at my talk page, I've made some changes to the Bot notices: Template:Csb-pageincludes, Template:Csb-notice-pageincludes and Template:Csb-notice-pageincluded. I'd really appreciate feedback on that, since I don't have the option of talking to Coren about it (he hasn't answered my recent e-mail; hope all is well with him!). The conversation is at User_talk:Moonriddengirl#Request for Comment. The changes were implemented to try to help soften the blow of false positives, because all of us who read Coren's talk page know how very irritating they can be to people. The Bot is important, but we don't want it biting any more than necessary. --Moonriddengirl (talk) 15:14, 15 August 2010 (UTC)

Here's the full text of the TV Guide source used in the article. You can double up the commentary sources with a third-party source, and it's got some bits for the in-universe sections. Note: It says "Azaria has proposed there be an episode featuring Frink's father", which isn't exactly the same as the article now. Probably best to say he conceived the idea and it was later used for "Treehouse of Horror XIV":
Professor John Frink
Wacky genius with IQ of 199, 81 points below Steven Hawkings. Works and teaches at Springfield Heights Institute of Technology. His inventions, which never work, include mood pants, the Hoax-a-Scope, the Frinkiac-7 computer and the 77X42 Super Sour Ball. (Voiced by Hank Azaria.)
Memorable line: "Sorry I'm late. There was trouble at the lab with the running and the exploding and the crying when the monkeys stole the glasses off my head."
First appearance: March 28, 1991, "Old Money," in which he tries to solicit a $106,000 grant from Grampa Simpson for the purpose of building a prototype death ray that, for the moment, he somewhat dejectedly admits, "only has evil applications."
The scoop: Named after Simpsons supervising producer John Frink. The voice, Azaria confesses, is a rip-off of Jerry Lewis's "Nutty Professor" character. In fact, Azaria has proposed there be an episode featuring Frink's father, who would be voiced by Lewis himself. Frink's scenes almost always reduce the writers and actors to laughter. Groening says: "He was just written as a mad scientist character until Hank did the voice, and suddenly he became this nutty professor persona. What I love about Hank is that, you give him a single line - and most of these characters have very few lines - and he just brings it to life. Every time."
Oh and two reception links: [10], [11]. Enjoy, Gran2 22:08, 1 August 2010 (UTC)
- I'll see if I can find some more stuff tomorrow. To be frank, Frink is the only one worth saving. We should rebrand Radioactive Man so the comic is the primary focus. Dr. Nick, Cletus and Wolfcastle really are not worth fighting over. They will work fine as a nicely sourced section of the list. They're not really developed characters, all three are basically one joke. Lionel Hutz could be saved though. But, I'm amazed the guy didn't nominate Martin Prince (an article I thought we'd already got rid of) and Hans Moleman. Both of those are far less notable than the ones he did nominate. Gran2 22:27, 1 August 2010 (UTC)
- Sounds like a plan. This AFD highlights the one thing I hate about this place. We don't really get any praise at all for the work we do, but then when somebody nominates a Simpsons page for deletion, you get all these people popping up with "good riddance, there's too many Simpsons articles, they don't belong here, they're all cruft, great to see them be deleted etc." It's so frustrating when almost always we're the ones trying to get rid of the stuff... It makes me wonder when I bother. Gran2 22:43, 1 August 2010 (UTC)

South Gower RFC deletion
Hello, this is the second time this club was deleted. First it was deleted for copyright from their website by JamesBWatson, but as I am the Chairman, i hold the copyright so that was not a problem. Secondly you deleted it as not a notable entry - this facility supports 500 members, is frequently in the local press and the ex Captain of Wales - Paul Thorburn played for the club which makes it notable - not just in the local community but in Wales. I have massively changed the text from the initial entry to ensure it is not an advertisement and it just lists the facts and notable players. I would appreciate it if is re-instated please. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Brockaro (talk • contribs) 08:24, 18 August 2010 (UTC)

Hi. I've got a matter of some sensitivity going on that I'd like to take care of somewhat swiftly. Basically, we're looking to see if a CCI is needed. I would really like an additional set of eyes on this. For background, see this talk thread. The long and short of it is that I have a list of 40 articles at User:Moonriddengirl/sandbox that need to be evaluated. Can you evaluate some of them? And if so, how many and which ones do you want? --Moonriddengirl (talk) 14:07, 20 August 2010 (UTC)

- I won't be able to check any more articles today. It doesn't look like a CCI is needed in my opinion. See my comment about Miss Pittsburgh, though. Theleftorium (talk) 18:54, 20 August 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks so much for your help! I'll take a look at that one after I finish the one I'm combing through. --Moonriddengirl (talk) 18:55, 20 August 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks. About that one, IIRC, I thought that the primary source was US federal, so pd. But now I cannot find anything about it being federal, only county, and I am not sure if this is pd - so I rewrote anyway as part of my pass updating some old contribs of mine to modern standards, adding inline cites, and all. I hope this fixed any issues that this article might have had. --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| talk 19:17, 20 August 2010 (UTC)
- I see. Please note though that even if a source is PD, you have to provide attribution to avoid plagiarism. This can by done by using one of the templates in Category:Attribution templates. Theleftorium (talk) 20:00, 20 August 2010 (UTC)

You deleted the article based on alleged copyvio from "Encyclopedia of India Pakistan and Bangladesh". Unfortunately, that publication is simply a collection of Wikipedia articles. This issue is well known, and have been discussed at length at RSN. Please see Wikipedia:Reliable_sources/Noticeboard/Archive_70#Circular_references:_Gyan_Publishing_and_ISHA_Books.
I urge you to restore the article, since it has no copyvio, rather it is the victim of a copyvio by the print book by Om Gupta.
If you deleted any other articles based on this, please undo the deletion. --Ragib (talk) 18:38, 22 August 2010 (UTC)
- No, I'm definitely not going to restore that article. Only a small portion was "copied" from "Encyclopedia of India Pakistan and Bangladesh" (it must have been copied from another website). The majority of the article was a copyvio of http://www.dhakacity.org/Page/About/Link/2/List_id/21/About_DCC and http://www.dhakacity.org/Page/Mayor/Link_2/Page/List_id_2/2/Subid_2/27/New_Subid_2/57/Function_of_the_Ward_Commissioners. Regards, Theleftorium (talk) 18:47, 22 August 2010 (UTC)
- Hmm. It looks like the article was clean up until November 9, 2008. I'll restore the old revisions. Theleftorium (talk) 18:50, 22 August 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks. Restoring up to that revision is fine. My only point was the Om Gupta publication is a reverse copyvio, and most of the page can be restored after removal of the content from the organization's webpage. --Ragib (talk) 18:53, 22 August 2010 (UTC)

By the way, this problem and a host of other copyvio problems seem to stem from a single user Tanweer Morshed (talk · contribs), who introduced a large amount of copyvio in numerous articles over 2009-2010. Reverting his edits may get rid of most of the copyvio problems in these articles. --Ragib (talk) 18:55, 22 August 2010 (UTC)

Cambridge Grant Historic District photos
Hi Theleftorium, I posted some photos on "Cambridge Grant Historic District" and have labeled them as: "This work is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 License." However, they were still taken off the site. Would you please tell me WHERE to post this information so that the photos are legit?? Thank you RICEFLAN Riceflan (talk) 02:05, 23 August 2010 (UTC)
Sorry you had to scold User:Forteana, but the plot stuff you removed was partly mine. His original version is here I read several articles about the film and then modified what he originally wrote, creating this I had never seen the youtube clip before you placed in your summary, but it will be quite helpful in writing a better plot section. So thanks much. Regards, Schmidt, MICHAEL Q. 07:06, 23 August 2010 (UTC)
Sourcing help
I've been talking to Bill Oakley on Twitter and he's going to direct message me a few minor changes to his article. Do you have any suggestions for how that could be acceptable as a source? Gran2 19:01, 22 August 2010 (UTC)
- If the changes contradicts what the sources say, I guess you can ask him to send an email to WP:OTRS. Not sure if that helps. Theleftorium (talk) 19:09, 22 August 2010 (UTC)
- Okay, I'll see what he says and then if need be I'll get him to email OTRS. Actually if he tweeted the stuff, would that be acceptable per WP:SELFPUB? Gran2 19:21, 22 August 2010 (UTC)
- Yes, I think so. As long as it's nothing controversial. Theleftorium (talk) 19:26, 22 August 2010 (UTC)
- Well it seems for some reason I can't use it at all. Why, I have no idea. Oh well. I guess it wouldn't be advisible for me to put a message at the top of the page saying "WARNING: This article is not factually accurate, but the rules forbid me from correcting it". Anyway, here's the original draft of $pringfield which Bill just tweeted [13] We can't use it as a source, I'm sure, but it's interesting to read. Gran2 15:09, 25 August 2010 (UTC)

Forteana
You recently rejected a number of edits I made, insisting that I was in some sort of "copyright violation". That which I had 'copied' had been, or so I believed, a "brief excerpt" as is detailed below:
"... All text that you did not write yourself, except brief excerpts, must be available ..." Forteana (talk) 03:23, 24 August 2010 (UTC)
- But this text [14] was not a short excerpt, it was virtually all of the relevant text from the web page. This is also the total plot summary on the referenced page. Dougweller (talk) 12:19, 24 August 2010 (UTC)
- Hi Forteana. You are not allowed to copy text, such as plot summaries, if it can be rewritten in your own words (see Wikipedia:Non-free content). You can easily write your own "non-copyrighted" summary of a film. If you have to copy something, you must include quotation marks and a reference, otherwise it's plagiarism. - Well, congratulations. :) And complicating things, I've had more communication from the photographer and Roswell, and they would prefer to use File:Maggie Roswell-1.jpeg. I've explained that the attribution on the image might be removed and would not in any case be visible in the article, but the photographer prefers the close crop. It's uploaded; I leave it to you and the other contributors to the article to determine what to do now. But I will notify the photographer of the honor, and hope that he will be pleased enough to leave things as they are. :/ --Moonriddengirl (talk) 21:55, 25 August 2010 (UTC)
- Based on his reaction, I think he will be okay with leaving the image in place at least through the FP process and especially if it makes it. :) --Moonriddengirl (talk) 23:09, 25 August 2010 (UTC)
- It's very possible the promoted version (if any) will look more like the crop- a lot of portraits get cropped at FPC. J Milburn (talk) 10:54, 26 August 2010 (UTC)
- Moonriddengirl, is there a specific reason to why they want to use the crop? Is it because there's attribution on it? Theleftorium (talk) 13:36, 26 August 2010 (UTC)
- It's a combination. They would like to the attribution on it to remain, though I've told them that it probably will not. But even without the attribution, they would prefer the crop. FWIW, you've made the photographer very happy with your nomination. :) --Moonriddengirl (talk) 13:40, 26 August 2010 (UTC)

We say goodbye to the six who fell at the final hurdle. Geschichte (submissions) only just missed out on a place in the final eight. Resolute (submissions) was not far behind. Candlewicke (submissions) was awarded top points for in the news this round. Gary King (submissions) contributed a variety of did you know articles. Suomi Finland 2009 (submissions) said "I'm surprised to have survived so far into the competition", but was extactic to see Finland in the semi-finals. Arsenikk (submissions) did not score this round, but has scored highly in previous rounds. We also say goodbye to Ian Rose (submissions), who withdrew earlier this month after spending six weeks overseas. Anyone interested in this round's results can see them here and here. Thank you to Stone (submissions) for these.
Signups for next year's competition are now open. Planning is ongoing, with a key discussion about judges for next year open. Discussion about how next year's scoring will work is ongoing, and thoughts are more than welcome at Wikipedia talk:WikiCup/Scoring. Also, TonyTheTiger is compiling some information and statistics on the finalists here- the final eight are encouraged to add themselves to the list.
Our final eight will play it out for two months, after which we will know 2010's WikiCup winner, and a variety of prizes will be awarded. As ever, anything you worry may not receive the necessary attention before the end of the round (such as outstanding GA or FA nominations) is welcome at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews, and please remember to continue offering reviews yourself where possible. As always, the judges are available to contact via email, IRC or their talk pages, and general discussion about the Cup is welcome on the WikiCup talk page.If you wish to start receiving or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Hi. As you recently commented in the straw poll regarding the ongoing usage and trial of Pending changes, this is to notify you that there is an interim straw poll with regard to keeping the tool switched on or switching it off while improvements are worked on and due for release on November 9, 2010. This new poll is only in regard to this issue and sets no precedent for any future usage. Your input on this issue is greatly appreciated. Off2riorob (talk) 23:51, 20 September 2010 (UTC)

Bill Oakley will be on IRC at 12 noon Pacific time this Monday for us to conduct an interview for Wikinews (which I think is 9PM for you?) I hope you can make it. Gran2 19:26, 25 September 2010 (UTC)
- Sure, I can probably make it. I don't really know what to ask him, though. Have you prepared any questions? Theleftorium (talk) 21:52, 25 September 2010 (UTC)
- If you just want to 'hang' there as it were, that's fine. If there's anything in any articles you need a source for or want clearing up then you could ask him. I'm going to set it up as a normal interview (early life, career, what's it like to work on The Simpsons) but the main purpose is so he can go on record to say the corrections he sent me for his article so we can use that as a source. But I've got a few other questions. Gran2 14:38, 26 September 2010 (UTC)

WikiCup 2010 October newsletter
The 2010 WikiCup is over! It has been a long journey, but what has been achieved is impressive: combined, participants have produced over seventy featured articles, over five hundred good articles, over fifty featured lists, over one thousand one hundred "did you know" entries, in addition to various other pieces of recognised content. A full list (which has yet to be updated to reflect the scores in the final round) can be found here. Perhaps more importantly, we have our winner! The 2010 WikiCup champion is Sturmvogel_66 (submissions), with an unbelievable 4220 points in the final round. Second place goes to TonyTheTiger (submissions), with 2260, and third to Casliber (submissions), with 560. Congratulations to our other four finalists – White Shadows (submissions), William S. Saturn (submissions), Staxringold (submissions) and ThinkBlue (submissions). Also, congratulations to Sasata (submissions), who withdrew from the competition with an impressive 2685 points earlier in this round.
Prizes will also be going to those who claimed the most points for different types of content in a single round. It was decided that the prizes would be awarded for those with the highest in a round, rather than overall, so that the finalists did not have an unfair advantage. Winning the featured article prize is Casliber (submissions), for five featured articles in round 4. Winning the good article prize is Sturmvogel_66 (submissions), for eighty-one good articles in round 5. Winning the featured list prize is Staxringold (submissions), for six featured lists in round 1. Winning the picture and sound award is Jujutacular (submissions), for four featured pictures in round 3. Winning the topic award is Sturmvogel_66 (submissions), for forty-seven articles in various good topics in round 5. Winning the "did you know" award is TonyTheTiger (submissions), for over one hundred did you knows is round 5. Finally, winning the in the news award is Candlewicke (submissions), for nineteen articles in the news in round three.
The WikiCup has faced criticism in the last month – hopefully, we will take something positive from it and create a better contest for next year. Like Wikipedia itself, the Cup is a work in progress, and ideas for how it should work are more than welcome on the WikiCup talk page and on the scoring talk page. Also, people are more than welcome to sign up for next year's competition on the signup page. Well done and thank you to everyone involved – the Cup has been a pleasure to run, and we, as judges, have been proud to be a part of it. We hope that next year, however the Cup is working, and whoever is running it, it will be back, stronger and more popular than ever. Until then, goodbye and happy editing! Any chance you could move the clean rewrite at Talk:Richard Malanjum/Temp for me? VernoWhitney (talk) 03:24, 3 November 2010 (UTC)

Rewrite review?
Just when you think you might be able to escape from copyvio work... could you compare Talk:Frederick James Gould/Temp to the primary source and see if you think it's clean enough? I've looked at it already but I'd like a second opinion. VernoWhitney (talk) 16:42, 4 November 2010 (UTC)
- Heh, I really wish I could be more active at Wikipedia but school and other stuff is taking up all my time. :) What's your opinion of the rewrite? I definitely think it's too close to the source. Theleftorium (talk) 17:14, 4 November 2010 (UTC)
- I think it still has some problems too, although it is an improvement from what it was, but I'm having trouble identifying the actual problem areas to give examples to the author - it just seems "off" to me (which isn't much help for rewriting). VernoWhitney (talk) 17:24, 4 November 2010 (UTC)
- Well, I think the third paragraph is the worst. Especially the last sentence.

In 1879, he married Mahalah Elizabeth Lash, and moved to London where he began working as an assistant master in publicly funded board schools in the East End. He was transferred from Bethnal Green to Limehouse in 1887 after his notes in the Agnostic Journal were seen by the school board, and he was exempted from teaching the Bible. In 1891, he asked to be allowed to resume Bible teaching on a reforming ethical-agnostic basis, but this was refused.[1]
He moved to London in 1979, where he married Mahalah Elizabeth Lash (1879) and worked for 16 years as an assistant master in London board schools. [...] His fully-signed notes in the 'Agnostic Journal' in 1887 were seen by the School Board, and he was transferred from Bethnal Green to Limehouse and exempted from Bible-teaching duties. In 1891 he asked the Board to let him resume Bible-teaching on an ethical-agnostic basis, but was denied.
- The structure and language is just too similar. I think the best alternative would be to either summarize the text instead of paraphrasing it, or simply find more sources to expand the article and thereby avoiding similarities in the structure. Theleftorium (talk) 17:34, 4 November 2010 (UTC)
- Okay, the rewrite has been overhauled with more sources added and I think it looks clean now. If you agree could you go ahead and move it? And if not, of course, tell me what I missed. VernoWhitney (talk) 13:17, 5 November 2010 (UTC)

Long time, no...
Hi Lefty, it's been a while. I was wondering if you could do me a favour and warn this user: HeinzDoofenshmirtz (talk · contribs). He's been adding fair use images at will to list pages and has been ignoring my requests for him to stop. He might take a warning from an admin a bit more seriously. It's actually kind of ironic because at one time, I would have supported his efforts and defended. And here we are now and I want him stopped... I feel like a sell out. Anyway, thanks, Scorpion0422 18:05, 25 November 2010 (UTC)

Please don't revert w/out edit summaries
Please don't revert good faith, appropriate, explained (edit summary), in-accordance with policy edits without an edit summary or without discussing on the article talk page.[16]
If you disagree with my removal of the blog as a source to the Sideshow Bob's Last Gleaming article you could have included your reasoning in your edit summary, or you could have initiated a discussion on the article talk page and reached agreement rather than reverting. --Kleopatra (talk) 17:22, 27 November 2010 (UTC)
- Technically a forum post is not a reference, so essentially I removed spam or a soapbox, or whatever reason it was for including a forum post, not a reference.[17]
- The rest of the article looks fine, though, and stands up without the addition of the forum or blog posts, as do the few other Simpsons episodes I reviewed. Thanks for using a edit summary this time. --Kleopatra (talk) 22:26, 27 November 2010 (UTC)

Hello! This is a note to let the main editors of this article know that it will be appearing as the main page featured article on December 17, 2010. You can view the TFA blurb at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/December 17, 2010. The Simpsons Game is an action/platformer video game based on the animated television series The Simpsons, made for the Wii, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PlayStation 2, Nintendo DS, and PlayStation Portable. The game was developed, published, and distributed by Electronic Arts; it was released in North America in October 2007 and worldwide in November 2007. In the self-referential plot, the family discovers that they are forced to participate in another The Simpsons video game. Similar to the show, the game pokes fun at popular culture, other video games, and Electronic Arts, its publisher. The game follows the five Simpson family members—Homer, Marge (with Maggie), Bart, and Lisa—who learn they are part of a video game and are given superpowers to resolve several situations. Eventually, they must save their 8-bit predecessors from Will Wright, the game's antagonist, and the creator of their video game character selves, Matt Groening. Video game critics gave the game a mixed reaction. They praised its visuals and writing, which included many parodies of other video games, while they criticized its short length and poor camera system, which did not always function properly. The Simpsons Game received the Best Game Based on a Movie or TV Show award at the 2007 Spike Video Game Awards and was nominated for Best Video Game Writing at the 2007 Writers Guild of America Awards. Little help
Hey man, could you please weigh in with your admin expertise here? A user has 'created' the, in my view pointless, article Death of Phil Hartman which features virtually no new information whatsoever and is instead primarily a word for word copy of much of Phil's article. I think it's a redundant page but the user who started refuses to really acknowledge my points. Gran2 21:50, 13 December 2010 (UTC)

Television episode non-free images
Since I know you've done plenty of work with The Simpsons episodes I figured you'd be a good person to ask: What are the general standards for inclusion of an image in an episode article (yours or a projects or whatever). I ask because it came up at WP:NFCR that there are a whole slew of images such as File:Classy christmas season 7.jpg with limited FURs and not much if any commentary on them in their articles. I believe the standards are higher than simply identification of the episode, but I'm not quite sure where the bar is set. Any feedback would be appreciated. VernoWhitney (talk) 21:33, 15 December 2010 (UTC)
- As I understand it, a non-free screenshot should only be used if it would help readers understand the article (there's commentary about the scene in the article) and if the screenshot can't be conveyed in words. And an image like File:Classy christmas season 7.jpg can easily be described in words so it should be deleted. Theleftorium (talk) 14:01, 16 December 2010 (UTC)
- That's pretty much what I thought. Thanks! VernoWhitney (talk) 14:52, 16 December 2010 (UTC)

WikiCup 2011 May newsletter
We're half way through round 3 of the 2011 WikiCup. There are currently 32 remaining in the competition, but only 16 will progress to our penultimate round. Casliber (submissions), of pool D, is our overall leader with nearly 200 points, while pools A, B and C are led by Racepacket (submissions), Hurricanehink (submissions) and Canada Hky (submissions) respectively. The score required to reach the next round is 35, though this will no doubt go up significantly as the round progresses. We have a good number of high scorers, but also a considerable number who are yet to score. Please remember to submit content soon after it is promoted, so that the judges are able to review entries. Also, an important note concerning nominations at featured article candidates: if you are nominating content for which you intend to claim WikiCup points, please make this clear in the nomination statement so that the FAC director and his delegates are aware of the fact.
A running total of claims can be seen here. Your template message on my talk page about Ardmore Cricket Club
If you look at what the article said at the point I nominated it for deletion it said Ardmore Cricket Club is a cricket club in Ardmore, County Londonderry, Northern Ireland, playing in North West Senior League 2. and one un-sourced local, not national cup win - that makes zero claim to any significance. I do agree that by the time you declined the CSD it did make a small claim to significance ie a former test player playing for the club but it still fails WP:GNG and WP:CLUB . Please check the article history before placing that template in future. Mtking (talk) 23:35, 4 June 2011 (UTC)
- Well the template was placed automatically on your talk page so you really shouldn't take it too seriously. Theleftorium (talk) 10:30, 5 June 2011 (UTC)
- I am aware that a number of editing aids to place templates automatically, my point is that knowing what it says, don't use the aid if you know it is going to result in a incorrect talk page msg as in this case. Mtking (talk) 10:38, 5 June 2011 (UTC)
- Alright, fair enough. Theleftorium (talk) 10:40, 5 June 2011 (UTC)

Removal of images in Simpsons articles
Hi Leftorium, I have noticed that you removed the following images from their articles: File:Two Cars in Every Garage and Three Eyes on Every Fish.jpg, File:Krusty Gets Busted.jpg, File:The Crepes of Wrath.jpg, File:Call of the Simpsons.jpg, and File:Homer's Night Out.jpg, I was wondering if there is a policy somewhere stating that screenshots cannot be used for infoboxes. I understand the the most recent episodes use promotional posters in their infoboxes, but it seems that posters don't exist for older episodes; as such, I believe that using a screenshot showing a key element that is discussed in the article falls under fair-use. Crisco 1492 (talk) 04:23, 11 June 2011 (UTC)
- Hi! No, there's no policy stating that screenshots cannot be used for infoboxes. There is, however, the non-free content criteria, and these images fail both the first criterion and the eighth criterion. The screenshots can be conveyed by text alone (the plot summary), and they don't "significantly increase readers' understanding of the topic" (the plot summary is more than enough). So there's really no need to use non-free images in these articles. After all, Wikipedia's goal is to be a free content encyclopedia. Theleftorium (talk) 11:54, 11 June 2011 (UTC)
- Ah yes, and the WP:NFCI for screenshots would not allow it to be used just to identify the subject without any critical commentary. Very well then, thanks! Crisco 1492 (talk) 13:23, 11 June 2011 (UTC)
Re:Need copyright help with images on Commons
I agree with your assessments- each image is problematic. The first two should probably be nominated for deletion; the logo that meets the threshold of originality should go to the AfD equivalent (which, I must warn you, is very slow) while the school logo could probably be hit with {{subst:npd}}
. The others are a little more complicated- you could just hit them with no permission/nominate them for deletion, as above, but if you have reasonable grounds to believe the editor does own the rights to them, it may be worth contacting the uploader to ask them about it. Hopefully, you'll be able to get them to send permission to the appropriate OTRS address (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org) and then tag the images with {{OTRS pending}}
. Technically, that's what the no permission template is for, but sometimes a more gentle approach is best. If you're unable to get a valid email (no replies, not copyright holder, etc), or it's not worth going to the trouble (useless pics, deleted article, etc), then the images should be tagged for deletion as above. Rename
Please move Grandpa Simpson to Grampa Simpson...I'm sure I don't need to provide you references, but if so, I can. :) CTJF83 12:15, 12 June 2011 (UTC)
Please don't. This is definitely not an uncontroversial move. As shown in the recent RM, "Grandpa" is by far the most common name in reliable sources. If you wish to contest this, start another requested move expressing why you don't think we should follow policy in this case. Thanks,Jenks24 (talk) 21:35, 12 June 2011 (UTC)- Uh, I listed 3 sources on the talk page, including www.thesimpsons.com, what more do you want? CTJF83 21:37, 12 June 2011 (UTC)
There is a more detailed reply at my talk page (regarding WP:COMMONNAME), but the gist is that this should go through RM, as it isn't uncontroversial. If the consensus at an RM determines that we (Wikipedia) should use "Grampa" then that's fine by me, but this should not be done by asking on an admin's talk page (which is akin to listing it at Wikipedia:Requested moves#Uncontroversial requests).Jenks24 (talk) 22:01, 12 June 2011 (UTC)- I have struck my comments and no longer have an objection. Please proceed with the move when you are able to. Jenks24 (talk) 23:50, 12 June 2011 (UTC)

Eragon changes
My understanding is that it is the image and details of the first published edition that should appear in the Infobox. Can we leave the article as it was ? - No, "The image presented in the table should be the most significant cover historically for that book." The self-published version sold.. what, 1000 copies? The Knopf edition with the blue cover has sold millions of copies worldwide. It is therefore the one that should be used in the article. Theleftorium (talk) 21:45, 15 June 2011

DYK for Go Simpsonic with The Simpsons
On 16 June 2011, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Go Simpsonic with The Simpsons, which you created or substantially expanded. The fact was ... that while the album Go Simpsonic with The Simpsons only reached number 197 on the Billboard 200, it peaked at number two on Billboard's Top Kid Audio and remained on that chart for 17 weeks? You are welcome to check how many hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, quick check) and add it to DYKSTATS if it got over 5,000. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the Did you know? talk page. |

Invitation to the Bacon Challenge 2012
Hello! You have been invited to take part in the Bacon Challenge 2012. In case you don't know or need a refresher, the Bacon Challenge is an annual celebration of bacon on Wikipedia in which editors come together to help create, expand, and improve Wikipedia's coverage of bacon. The event lasts all the way through National Pig Day 2012, giving participants plenty of time to work at their pleasure. In addition to the Bacon Challenge is the Bacon WikiCup 2012, a side event to the Challenge in which all bacon-related contributions done by those participating in the Challenge are submitted and scored by the scorekeeper (me) based on the scoring chart. At the end of the Challenge, the user with the most points in the Bacon WikiCup will win a shiny trophy for their userpage. In addition, the users who score the highest in specific categories (not yet finalized, but the categories include most image uploads, most article creations, most DYK submissions, and more) will win barnstars. Finally, all participants will receive a medal. While the awards are nice, in the end, the important thing is to have fun and enjoy what we're all here for, which is improving Wikipedia.
If you decide to participate, great! You may add your name to the participants list at the main page of the Bacon Challenge 2012, and pick up the userbox for your userpage if you desire. Signing up for the Challenge will also automatically enter you into the Bacon WikiCup. If you don't wish to participate, that's fine too - maybe next year! In the meantime, if you know anyone who might also be interested in participating, feel free to invite them! The Challenge is open to anyone and accepts participants at any time, so feel free to let anyone who might be interested know.
Note that I, the scorekeeper of the Bacon WikiCup, will be on vacation starting on the 18th of June all the way up until the 5th of July. I will have limited access to the internet, so I may or may not be able to score users' contributions during this time. Sorry for any delay in scoring (but since the Challenge lasts for more than half a year, there's no rush, right? (= ).
I'm looking forward to another fun, successful year. Thanks! ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 22:56, 17 June 2011 (UTC)
List of national parks of Sweden
Hi Henrik,
There is a new weekly section on the main page called "Today's featured list" and I have nominated List of national parks of Sweden to have a spot here. There has been some opposition to the nomination, so if you would like to help address the concerns that have been raised, that would be greatly appreciated.

TFL notification
Hi, Theleftorium. I'm just posting to let you know that List of national parks of Sweden – a list that you have been heavily involved with – has been submitted as a candidate to be featured on the Main Page as Today's featured list. The proposed content can be seen here. You are more than welcome to post your thoughts on the nomination. Regards, —WFC— 15:19, 18 June 2011 (UTC)
DYK for Tisa Chang
On 20 June 2011, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Tisa Chang, which you created or substantially expanded. The fact was ... that Tisa Chang's father performed in school plays at Nankai University together with Zhou Enlai, who went on to become the Premier of the People's Republic of China? You are welcome to check how many hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, quick check) and add it to DYKSTATS if it got over 5,000. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the Did you know? talk page. |

Why are we allowing.....
...poor articles from site like www.sikhiwiki.org to be copy pasted here. It is an awful site with poorly reaserched and written articles. It seems to be controlled by one editor. Surely that violate WP:NPOV. ThanksSH 08:38, 22 June 2011 (UTC)
- We don't allow it. That's why the article has that large banner on the top. Sadly no one has improved it yet. :/ Theleftorium (talk) 10:06, 22 June 2011 (UTC)
- Ok, I am loathed to give publicity to poor sites like sikhiwki as it tarnishes wikipedia. I will have a bash at re-writing it. Thanks for the heads up SH 08:03, 23 June 2011 (UTC)
Re:MacHomer
Thanks, it's one of those articles that I always had on my to-do list because I kept coming across articles about the play in Google News. I created it with the intention of taking it to GA/FA, but I never got around to it. If you'd like to help out, then by all means please do. -- Scorpion0422 23:47, 25 June 2011 (UTC)
- By the way, great job with There's Something About Marrying. If you're looking for cultural references to add, it might be worth noting that the couch gag (with the Stanley Cup) aired during the 2004–05 NHL lockout. Also, the episode is mentioned in a book I have called Simpsonology. I'll look it up for you tomorrow. There's also a brief mention of it in The Simpsons: An Uncensored, Unauthorized History in which the author is critical of the episode (again, I can add it tomorrow). And The Gospel According to The Simpsons has a page on it. It says that several activists commented on it, and I'll list their names so you can try finding more via google: Robert Castillo and Rick Garcia (both in the Chicago Tribune on Feb 21, 2005). The author (Mark I. Pinsky) also says he was interviewed several times about the episode. -- Scorpion0422 04:14, 26 June 2011 (UTC)
I haven't checked Simpsonology yet (as I would have to comb through the book page by page). Have you tried looking for the Chicago Tribune article? Pinsky's book (which mentions some cultural references, such as Veronica singing Dude Looks Like a Lady) had a quote from Mike Reiss from some Australian magazine, but I was unable to find the original article. Also, I tried a google search of the GLAAD website and came up with this: [18]. THe first result looks good, but I was unsure if it was used or not. -- Scorpion0422 16:25, 26 June 2011 (UTC)
- Also, it would be nice if we can find some comments from Julie Kavner (we do have an image of her now, which could be used in the article). By the way, an interesting note, and not useable in any way shape or form for obvious reasons, is that I've read rumours that Kavner is herself gay. -- Scorpion0422 16:31, 26 June 2011 (UTC)
Would it be worth noting that Patty's voice was heard as part of the "still in the closet" float at the gay pride parade in Jaws Wired Shut? -- Scorpion0422 19:01, 26 June 2011 (UTC)
Yes he does, and he cites Fort Lauderdale. I just threw in the other ref because it's an online site that confirms it. -- Scorpion0422 22:07, 27 June 2011 (UTC)

WikiCup 2011 June newsletter
We are half way through 2011, and entering the penultimate round of this year's WikiCup; the semi-finals are upon us! Points scored in the interim (29/30 June) may be counted towards next round, but please do not update your submissions' pages until the next round has begun. 16 contestants remain, and all have shown dedication to the project to reach this far. Our round leader was Casliber (submissions) who, among other things, successfully passed three articles through featured article candidates and claimed an impressive 29 articles at Did You Know, scoring 555 points. Casliber led pool D. Pool A was led by Wizardman (submissions), claiming points for a featured article, a featured list and seven good article reviews, while pool C was led by Eisfbnore (submissions), who claimed for two good articles, ten articles at Did You Know and four good article reviews. They scored 154 and 118 respectively. Pool B was by far our most competitive pool; six of the eight competitors made it through to round 4, with all of them scoring over 100 points. The pool was led by Hurricanehink (submissions), who claimed for, among other things, three featured articles and five good articles. In addition to the four pool leaders, 12 others (the four second places, and the 8 next highest overall) make up our final 16. The lowest scorer who reached round 4 scored 76 points; a significant increase on the 41 needed to reach round 3. Eight of our semi-finalists scored at least twice as much as this.
No points were awarded this round for featured pictures, good topics or In the News, and no points have been awarded in the whole competition for featured topics, featured portals or featured sounds. Instead, the highest percentage of points has come from good articles. Featured articles, despite their high point cost, are low in number, and so, overall, share a comparable number of points with Did You Know, which are high in number but low in cost. A comparatively small but still considerable number of points come from featured lists and good article reviews, rounding out this round's overall scores.
We would again like to thank Jarry1250 (submissions) and Stone (submissions) for invaluable background work, as well as all of those helping to provide reviews for the articles listed on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. Please do keep using it, and please do help by providing reviews for the articles listed there. However, please remember to continue to offer reviews generally at GAC, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which could otherwise be caused by the Cup.
Two final notes: Firstly, please remember to state your participation in the WikiCup when nominating articles at FAC. Finally, some WikiCup-related statistics can be seen here and here, for those interested, though it appears that neither are completely accurate at this time. As ever, questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup and the judges are reachable on their talk pages, or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start receiving or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. J Milburn and The ed17 23:41, 30 June 2011 (UTC)
