Re: Ba'athism

I must admit, I'm pretty knew to this stuff, I've just begun my reading on Ba'athism. While you have a point, the most notable Iraqi Ba'ath Party is those who ruled the country, therefore, I believe, the leader section should consist of those who led the party to power in 1968 + It's hard enough to find info about the pre-Hussein party, information regarding the Syrian-controlled Iraqi Ba'ath Party is going to be very difficult to locate. Seriously, I'm still not sure when Ahmed Hussein al-Bakr became General Secretary, most historians have focused their interest on Iraqi Ba'athism on the Hussein era, and left everything else for the dustbin of history! My plan is to make two pages, one for Syrian Ba'ath Party of the Assads and one for the Iraqi Party of Hussein, and rewrite the main Ba'ath Party so it consists of the party history until the 1966-break, or merge the Ba'ath Party page to Ba'athism, and write about the break their. As you may know, the page for Ba'athism here on wikipedia is way to short. But just to make my plan clear, my plan now is to expand on Iraqi Ba'athism and Ba'athist Iraq at the moment, I still havn't acquired much knowledge on Syrian ba'athism yet, which is strange, considering that ba'athism is really a Syrian ideology.. The split was in 1966, when the Syrian-branch said it had the right to control the whole Ba'athist movement from Damascus. Several Ba'athist members were wary of being under the control of Syria, and wanted to evolve independently with as little interference as possible. The branch in Iraq had become highly nationalistic. Another reason was that the Syrian branch had become influenced marxism, the party in Iraq, as said, was a nationalist party with a vague socialist orientation. Socialism in the Iraqi Ba'ath Party was not as important for them as it was for the Syrians. Question, isn't the Syrian ba'ath party the only ba'ath party with a National Command now-a-days - the organ controlling the Ba'ath movement. I mean, the Iraqi branch probably still got one, but it has no effective power, and the wiki articles says most of the parties which adhered to the Iraqi line have ditched them. The only ba'ath party left, leading the movement is in Damascus, for now at least. But yes, I agree with a split; Ba'ath Party (Iraq) and Ba'ath Party (Syria). --TIAYN (talk) 11:33, 22 October 2011 (UTC)

Doesn't this mean that the Iraqi branch is now under Syrian control? + In the new Ba'ath article I think we should write about the National Command, and not the regional commands. The regional commands were just branches and, according to me, should have there own articles. Secondly, there is enough information out there on the National Command of the Ba'ath Party pre-1966 to warrant an article. My plan is the following; the emphasise of the article should be on the National Command's activities, and then, a brief summary, 2-3 paragraph long about maybe, of all the branches. As we both know, there were more then two branches, but there seems to me, that only two of them are getting any mention. The Ba'ath were very strong in Jordan in the 1960s and 1970s but they are barely mentioned. The article is, in the state it is in now, bent in favour of Iraqi and Syrian branch/party... Or we could make a page for the National Command of the Arab Socialist Ba'ath Party? In my mind that would be waste of time, but what do you think? --TIAYN (talk) 11:21, 23 October 2011 (UTC)

The Telegraph article does not indicate a reunification, just a sense of pragmatism on behalf of Syrian govt. The post-2003 developments of the pro-Saddam Baath Party are extremely murky, very unclear if a central coordination still exists. In the case of the Sudanese Baath Party, they simply opted to become a separate party altogether.

I think we should construct the articles so that clarity and preciseness prevails. The key facts are that 1) from the 1940s to 1966 there was one Baath Party, with RCs across the Arab World. 2) from 1966 onwards, there are two parties with identical names, each of them claiming to be the genuine NC, 3) both of the parties have seemingly identical and parallel organizational structures, with a parallel set-up of RCs. So there is a Syrian RC of the Assad party, and a Syrian RC of the Hussein party, there is an Iraqi RC of the Hussein party as well as one Iraqi RC of the Assad party (or in fact, there are two it seems...), there is an Yemeni RC of the Assad party and an Yemeni RC of the Hussein party, there is a Palestinian RC of the Assad party and a Palestinian RC of the Hussein party, and in Lebanon, Jordan, etc...

So, we don't get around the problematics by separating articles of NCs and RCs. We just end up in a plethora of articles, and not reducing the confusion created by popular perceptions of what the Baath is. --Soman (talk) 11:40, 23 October 2011 (UTC)

Isn't that in deep contrast to wiki guidelines? I've never seen a source say that the Iraqi-branched Ba'ath Party was the successor to the original party. Secondly, since Iraqi Ba'ath Party has been banned, and is near-collapse anyway, Syria is by all means the dominant Ba'ath Party. They may not be the direct heirs, but they are the strongest + you have to into account the organisational changes. Another point - It would be easier to have 3 articles. There is a loot about the Ba'ath Party post-1968 in Iraq and in Syria. I support without question having 3 articles. Again, you have a point. The pre-1966 Iragi (Baghdad)-organisation was not a party, that's true, but it functioned as a party. The fact is that the Regional Command for the Iraqi (Baghdad)-based organisation worked as a party, and the same organiational structure was still used in the post-split party. Nothing really changed in Iraqi (Baghdad) with the exception that Afleq dissapeared. It should be noted that Afleq didn't chose to flee Syria, he was forced too. Afleq tried, against all odds, in the 1960s to retain control over the Ba'ath Party through the National Command, in this he failed. Saddam Hussein granted Afleq Iraqi citizenship but no real power, and made Iraq, under his rule, an official Ba'athist state (the same a socialist state, but you know, Ba'athist instead). Afleq was just a character in a much bigger playing board controlled by Saddam when he came and lived in Iraq. --TIAYN (talk) 10:55, 24 October 2011 (UTC)

+ while I generally consider you're work very good on the Ba'ath Party (Syria) article, it should be made clear that it is the Syrian cell of the Ba'ath Party which controlls the movement. Thus I'm opposed to naming a section "The party in Syria". The cell in Syria is the party! Without Syria there would be no Damascus-based Ba'ath Party. The other parties are branches of the Syrian controlled Damascus-based Ba'ath Party. The fact is that, since the 1966, the branches of the Baghdad and Damascus-based parties are merely just pans in a bigger games headed by the Iraqi and Syrians cells respectively - there would be no movement, nor party without them! I havn't said the Syrian branch has seized to be a Ba'athist party, I'm saying that the Syrian cell is the cell which is controlling the party. The chance of a non-Syrian holding the position as the General Secretary of the National Command is equally to 0. That's fact, and that should be made clear. Im not saying they stopped being Ba'athist, I'm saying that only one of the regional cells controlled the Iraqi Ba'ath movement and one cell is still controlling the Syrian-led ba'athist movement.
