OH route 4

[edit]

In your map of route 4, what does the green line at the top represent? Homeless Canadian (talk) 02:08, 18 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

https://commons.m.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:OH_4_map.svg I don't know how to link things apparently Homeless Canadian (talk) 02:09, 18 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

It's meant to represent the Ohio Turnpike, a toll road. USRD Map standards allow for a green color for toll roads, similar to some paper map companies' color scheme. It has been brought up to me in the past that the color is confusing for some colorblind users (where it appears to be red similar to the highlighted route). However, it appears that some major reroutings of Ohio State Route 4 have occurred (mainly in downtown Dayton) so I am updating its KML file and accordingly, I'll publish a JSON map allowing for an interactive map thus removing that specific map from the article. —Mr. Matté (Talk/Contrib) 02:57, 18 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Asked a question and got a journal of knowledge. Thanks Homeless Canadian (talk) 03:37, 18 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

The file File:GSPkwy Shield.png has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Raster image orphaned in mainspace superseded by File:GSPkwy Shield.svg. Said vector image was not created using this image as a source, and so this image is not needed for attribution purposes.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated files}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the file's talk page.

Please consider addressing the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated files}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and files for discussion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Why does the map have an old alignment shown, I have not seen this feature in the maps before and I would advise against it as we do have history of other historic routings in the state and some highways could be really messy. --WashuOtaku (talk) 12:27, 17 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

U.S. Route 311 is another example, and that former alignment lasted less time than what was the former segment of NC 119 thru Mebane. I don't have a set of parameters as to when I might draw in a former alignment, but if it's pretty significantly different than the current (e.g. not just a curve radius increase) I might include it. I doubt that the historic alignments would be an issue, and if it does, could be handled on a case-by-case basis. —Mr. Matté (Talk/Contrib) 20:33, 17 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think its an issue, just different from the norm. --WashuOtaku (talk) 23:24, 17 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Source for population density and other census data

[edit]

I've been one of several editors updating articles for places in New Jersey and we've run into issues with data for population density, among other fields. I saw the fantastic work you did on a wholesale update of the List of municipalities in New Jersey, but it's unclear from the edits and the discussion on the talk page as to how you accessed the data. Was population density downloaded or did you calculate based on population and land area? Any hints and tips for using the data files would be most helpful. Alansohn (talk) 15:29, 17 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Memory might not be completely accurate since Aug. '21, but from what I can gather:
In the reference link for the 2020 data, the ZIP file has a couple of .pl files that could be opened in Notepad and get a pipe-separated values wall of text. It looks like the "njgeo2020.pl" file has the municipal/county subdivision data towards the beginning. I found the example line:
PLST|NJ|060|00|00|000|00|0000240|0600000US3401351000|3401351000|1|2|34|01779795|013|H1|00882276|51000|C5|00885317||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||35620|1|408|35084|99999|9|999|99999||||||||||||||||||||||||||||62531386|4509784|Newark|Newark city|F||311549|118163|+40.7242204|-074.1725735|25|
and cross-referenced against a newspaper article stating along the lines of "Newark is the largest city with a population of 311,549." The number two columns before the place name (in the example above "62531386") is the land area in square meters. At the time, I probably parsed this data into a personal Excel file that helped spit out the {{Pop density}} code and converted to square miles in the meantime. I don't seem to have my final file anymore, I found I guess a early draft on my flash drive (I was still calling the area "square feet" at the time in my label) but that should at least give you enough information to cross check as needed. —Mr. Matté (Talk/Contrib) 23:58, 17 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks so much for the pointers! I'll try to see if the Census Bureau defines the fields, but I'm sure that I can work backwards. Alansohn (talk) 19:04, 18 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Out-of-date image

[edit]

Hello, you may wish to know that an image created by you, a map showing which U.S. states have at-large congressional districts, is now out of date. This is a result of Montana gaining a seat after 2020 reapportionment (and general redistricting, since the map shows all congressional districts). Kornatice (talk) 05:30, 12 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I didn't create that specific image, the creator of that at-large file used a national map I had created in the previous decade and copied the author template I use on my files. —Mr. Matté (Talk/Contrib) 14:16, 12 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Pennsylvania municipalities illustrated

[edit]

Hi, thank you for asking, and yes, it's fine if you update it. Great to know that we're so close to being fully illustrated. One reason I've done nothing with it for a long time is that I forgot that it existed! And another reason is that I've emigrated (going to Pittsburgh would take nearly 24 hours and several flights), so I don't pay as much attention to US geography articles anymore. Barnstar for North Jersey photographs

[edit]
The Photographer's Barnstar
The swath of territory that was covered in all of the photos you added for articles in Northern Jersey is pretty remarkable as is the number of articles updated. Were all these pictures taken on one day or was this a longer road trip? I'd love to see a map of the route you took.

Alansohn (talk) 20:26, 23 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I created a personal database of municipalities in Pennsylvania based on the number of photos (none, 1-3, ≥4) and the types of photos that existed (or at least were well categorized) on Commons e.g. roads, government buildings, churches, houses, attractions. Iused that to plan some summer road trips I took this year to get some pics for municipalities that either lacked or had a small variety of types. I then created a similar one for NJ since there are some municipalities where the only photos other than maybe say one or two from over a decade ago were from Mr. Long-file-name-route-shield-closeup. This particular trip on October 20 I used to fill in some gaps on that database in northeast Jersey, plus attempt to finish what I was missing from my own personal travels on the 500 county route system (for the record, I'm still missing two small pieces of CR 502 due to police closures). This was my route map north of the Raritan.Mr. Matté (Talk/Contrib) 21:44, 23 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
