RfC

[edit]

As a rule, the RfC question should be a single, simple and short question. Furthermore, many otherwise willing to help editors do not step in to comment because they find long RfC questions difficult to understand. The editor who opens the RfC can explain their rationale below the RfC question. Read WP:RfC for more information. Ktrimi991 (talk) 21:53, 4 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Shigoni

[edit]

Asking out of curiosity. There is a guy named Gjin Shigoni there in the defter list. Have you seen Shigoni being used by Albanians elsewhere, or could it be just a missplelling of Shigjoni (Shirgj+Gjoni)? I ask because Shigon is very interesting, and like Progon seems to point out an old suffix of Albanian onomastics, -on. Ktrimi991 (talk) 16:24, 23 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I will have a more in-depth look into the register, however, currently I have not come across the name elsewhere. It is possible that it was indeed a misspelling, although, if I am not mistaken, the anthroponym Gon does appear in certain records as a diminutive of Gjon. It is also possible that the Shi corresponds to shën > shin although this is speculative and the shirgj connection is valid. I should also note that similar names do appear, in the village of Shmil (Shëmill) a certain Shogon Kargaçini appears although this too is possibly a misspelling since in the same settlement Gjergj Shokoni (likely his son) is attested. Lezhjani1444 (talk) 17:16, 23 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
That book on page 50 says "Gjin Shigoni (Shigjoni) në Fënarëz" i.e. Shigoni is treated as a misspelling  of Shigjoni.  Shogon/Shokon too is an interesting case. Maybe Shigon/Shogon was once an Albanian name, who knows. Unfortunately many old elements of Albanian onomastics have been lost. Btw, do you know anything about the origin and meaning of the name Ishri? I have noticed it in defter data as being used as a personal name or a family name by Albanians througout Albania. For instance, Ishri Buluzi in Gur i Bardhë. Ktrimi991 (talk) 19:28, 23 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for linking the book, it seems as if the surname may have been toponymic in origin: Duhet vënë në dukje gjithashtu se, po të ndjekim në hartë vendosjen e fshatrave prej nga përmenden të shpërngulurit, do të shohim se ato ndodhen përgjithësisht përbrenda zonës së Çermenikës (si janë: Arrëza, Dorëzi, Floqi, Mazhi, Pisha, Pishkashi), por ka edhe raste që ndodhen disi më larg, si Malakasi në Gollobordë, Shigjoni, Shirgji, e Shalësi në Elbasan etj. (p. 51). It may also be worth noting that the settlement of Ajogjani is recorded as among the abandoned villages around the fortress of Kodžadžik.
In the Ottoman registers, it was typical for the scribes to attribute I as a prefix to toponyms or anthroponyms beginning with consonants so it is possible that the personal name Ishri would have been natively pronounced as Shri (or Shiri). However, in the footnotes of the translation it is noted that the editors addressed this issue by including the Albanian forms without the prefix, so it is possible that the name was indeed Ishri. As for its etymology, I will try and find some information that may be helpful, one speculative explanation that I have quickly come up with is that it may be a diminutive of Shirgj, however, I may be (most likely) completely wrong. I will let you know if I find anything. Lezhjani1444 (talk) 22:13, 23 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
This anthroponym also appears in the forms of Ashari, Ishari, Asheri, Isheri, Ashiri, and Ishiri. For example, in the register on Dropull the settlement of Asharat or Isharat-trad is attested and the following are recorded from the village: Isher Pali, Andre Isheri, and Gjon Isheri (possibly, Alsheri). It is possible that the original form of the name would have been something akin to Sharri or Sharra. Lezhjani1444 (talk) 11:28, 24 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the information, much appreciated. I first thought that Ishari could be some kind of Christian name, but is does not seem to be the case. The fact that there was Ashari too reinforces that. It is maybe an old "native" name. A city in Dardania was named Anausaro, a combination of Ana (widely used in Illyria apparently) and Saro or Usaro. Who knows, maybe Ishari/Ashari comes from Paleo-Balkan onomastics.
