IDESCAT

Why did you remove the IDESCAT link from Alt Camp? It was the source of the population statistics. It should have been cited as such -- not sure why it wasn't. I see their server is down right now, but that shouldn't be a reason to remove a link. -- Jmabel | Talk 07:07, 23 November 2005 (UTC)

Actually, I kept looking and it wasn't a server problem, despite the message. They had changed the link. It was pretty easy to come in via their home page & fix it. Some time the next few days, I'll check out all the other Catalan comarques, I suspect the change is general, their site has a new look.

Re your change from British English to American English spelling, it is Wikipedia policy not to change types or English or their spelling. There are three simple rules:

• If the topic is American, use American English.
• If a topic is British or Commonwealth, use British/International English.
• If a topic is neither, leave in the form of spelling in which the article was originally written and and add your own additions in that form.

Please do not replace mediæval with medieval when the article is written in British English, not American English. FearÉIREANN\^(caint) 15:49, 2 December 2005 (UTC)

• Sorry about the spell edit. I didn't realize that this was the UK spelling. I once read it was archaic, but perhaps only in American English. No problem. Even more complicated is the fact that it can be written in BE either as mediaeval or mediæval. The spellcheck may have had some problems with the æ which is less widely used anymore but still perfectly OK to use. It is usually people who learnt/learned (sic) latin who still use the æ! But then there is the fun of jail/gaol. The latter is quite old-fashioned, but still perfectly valid, particularly when referring to old names like the Ballad of Reading Jail, Mountjoy Gaol, etc. But people keep finding them and changing them. The complication is also that there are other forms of English, such as Indian English, Australian English, Hiberno-English, etc. æ is declining in usage in British English, but it is still correct. It is still used a lot in Hiberno-English, which I speak and write. But it is perfectly correct. Every so often you find users who insist that it can't be right because they never saw it. And of course these wordchecks are notoriously bad. I use them all the time when writing newspaper articles and columns and it is frustrating because as well as spotting errors they also spot perfectly correct spellings. Because there are some overlaps between BE and AE, it seems as though if there are two versions, one used exclusively by BE and one used occasionally in BE and all the time in AE, they are programmed only to recognise the latter and never the former. It does annoy a lot of BE, HE, AE users, etc.

I don't have anything against the move per se, except I haven't been able to ascertain that the English name is how they refer to themselves in English. I only found one English page on their website, and here they refer to themselves as LLH. Once you have the popups installed, when you view the diff page between two revisions, hover over the version you wish to revert to, and select actions / revert. That should open the revision for editing and automatically save. Jacoplane 11:59, 20 December 2005 (UTC)

How does one become allowed to edit?

I just discovered that Wikipeida can be edited. So I made some updates and alterations, all of which are completely accurate. But then you sent me a message that I was doing something wrong. Do I have to register for something?

Your address is a shared address that many AOL users use. I warned someone with your IP address because they made unhelpful changes to Wikipedia. You can avoid these warnings by creating a username and logging in. Anyone can edit Wikipedia, provide those changes are constructive. USSR establishment date.

If you look on the USSR article, it says that the country was established on December 30, 1922. Nowhere in the article is the date July 6, 1923 mentioned.

Superscripts

It's really easy -- you see the list of characters under the edit box? Superscript 1, 2, and 3 are listed there. Clicking the link adds a character to the textbox (provided that you have allowed Javascript in your browser). Another way to show them is to use html tags (e.g. ³ -> ³). I recommend using the letters without html tags, because it makes editing easier (and because Wikipedia uses UTF-8 encoding, html tagging is not needed).--Jyril 17:01, 29 December 2005 (UTC)
