Welcome to my user talk page!

A user talk page is a page where you leave messages for a user. In this case, this is the user talk page for me—K6ka. You can use this page to contact me.

Think of a user talk page like a public email inbox. All messages need to have a Subject and a Body, and they should be written politely and formally (e.g. starting with a greeting and ending with "Thank you for your time"). When you post your message, it is public—everyone can see it, even though it was addressed to me. I will receive a notification when you leave me a message, and will try to respond to your message the next time I log in.

How to leave a new message for me

Select the New section button.
The page editor will load.
In the "Subject:" field, enter the Subject of your message.
A subject is your title, not your entire message! Be clear, concise, and short.
Examples of bad titles: HELP ME!!!, Message, Hello, Question.
Examples of good titles: Question regarding the Coffee article.
In the text box underneath the Subject: field, type the message you would like to leave for me.
Look over your message for any typos or mistakes.
When you are finished, add your signature to the end of your message.
To do this, first move your text insertion cursor to the end of your message. Then, do any of the following:
- In the editor toolbar, select the button.
- Enter four tilde characters using your keyboard. This will look like the following: ~~~~.
  On a US keyboard, this is done by pressing the following key combinations four times: ⇧ Shift+`. Please see this chart for more information on how to type the tilde character.
Select Publish changes.
A new thread will appear at the bottom of this talk page with your message.

How to respond to an existing thread

Threads are organized by their Subject. Subjects are written as a Level 2 heading—large text with a grey underline—along with an edit link. If you would like to reply to an existing thread, do the following:

In the thread you would like to reply to, select the edit link next to the thread's Subject.
In the editor, move your text insertion cursor to the bottom of the page.
Type your response.
When you are finished, add your signature to the end of your message.

Q: I am not logged in to Wikipedia, and I got a message from you saying that I vandalized an article that I didn't edit. What's going on?
A: No need to panic! Wikipedia uses your IP address to identify you when you are not logged in. IP addresses may be shared between multiple users, or be reassigned to different users periodically. For example, if you are at school or a coffee shop, the IP address you are using is shared by everyone using the Internet there.
The message you received was intended for someone who had previously used the IP address you are currently using. If you did not vandalize Wikipedia, you can safely ignore the message. If you get these kinds of messages frequently, you may want to consider creating an account and logging in to it. That way, any messages you get will actually be intended for you, rather than someone else who used your IP address.
Q: I am not logged into Wikipedia, and I can't edit because you have blocked me. What do I do?
A: See the above: you are probably on a shared IP address, and someone before you was editing Wikipedia inappropriately. Shared IP addresses are usually blocked from editing for long periods of time to prevent abuse. The good news is that you can usually still edit if you log in. If you don't have an account, and cannot create one because of the block, you can request an account.
Q: You reverted one of my edits. Why is that?
A: Unless I'm reverting vandalism, I usually provide an explanation for my reverts, either in my edit summary, or in a message on your user talk page. There are many reasons for reverting an edit, and each case has its own reason. If you're still not sure why I reverted your edit, you can ask me on this talk page.

Semi-Protecting Animal Crossing-related pages are something we need, but we don't wish to add mentions of rule34 content there. Please re-read the message I left on your talk page, which explains that Wikipedia is not censored and may contain material others find unacceptable. There may be other reasons to exclude that from the article (e.g. unreliable sourcing, lack of notability, un-encyclopedic for inclusion), but not because it is "uncomfortable" to include. And because this is often completely forgotten in dialogue, I have no connection with the article's subject whatsoever; I only noticed that you made the argument that the material was inappropriate, and sought to explain that this isn't a reason alone to exclude content from the site. —k6ka 🍁 (Talk · Contributions) 14:39, 30 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I understand why we don't need to censor, but I find mentions of Ankha Zone unacceptable. Zone-Tan is an infamous Newgrounds Rule 34 Animator known for Lewd fan animations of Pop Culture Cartoons and Video Games. Nintendo Pages like this don't belong there; the category doesn't fit. Maybe I'm wrong; I don't know. I want it removed before the final decision to be semi-protected is made to prevent editors from adding it again. A few points to consider:

Semi-protection will not help because any autoconfirmed user can still edit the page to include it. It will only prevent unregistered users like you from editing the page.
Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, and in its encyclopedic function, may cover topics that are deemed inappropriate otherwise; this has already been explained to you, so I will not elaborate further.
"I don't like it" is not a strong argument for anything. Decisions on Wikipedia are made through consensus via discussion. The strength of an argument is determined by how well it explains its reasoning, not by numbers or by personal opinion. Your comments on the article's talk page don't provide any strong arguments and don't cite any policies or previous consensus. It's going to be difficult to convince anyone with such flimsy arguments alone.

And, as I should mention again, I have no connection to the article in question whatsoever, so airing grievances at me isn't going to accomplish anything. I simply explained to you that WP:NOTCENSORED is policy, so if you disagree with the inclusion of the material in question, that line of reasoning isn't supported by the general consensus that Wikipedia isn't censored, and that it is better instead to explain why such inclusions are not notable or unencyclopedic. —k6ka 🍁 (Talk · Contributions) 21:10, 30 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Your comment on my Signpost piece

Hey, thanks for your comment at the talk page of my Signpost piece. You're one of a few newbies I helped who went on to do great things here. I think a big difference between you and some of the other users I became paranoid about was ... vandalism-fighting was an activity that I'd always expected newbies to try their hand at. I'd helped out someone in a similar situation as recently as February this year and as far back as February 2007, so by the time I'd met you I knew what to do when I encountered someone trying to revert vandalism but not quite making it. What I found more difficult to deal with was people trying to add overlinking (or something that violated our Manual of Style), good-faith but unhelpful "copyediting", and unnecessary/unhelpful reference changes, which I noticed more and more as the years went on. If I'd encountered a situation such as yours six months ago, I'd like to hope the worst I would've done in addition is asking if you'd had any experience on other wikis. But maybe the newcomer tasks/homepage or something might have directed you to try your hand at something else, hopefully without unintentionally causing problems. I'm upset that all this happened too ... but it has and I have to deal with it the best I can. Graham87 (talk) 15:59, 30 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Graham87: Well, the worst that has happened was an established administrator blocking a new user for being "a returning user with an agenda", because of their familiarity with behind-the-scenes stuff. Consensus at ANI found the block was made poorly. That's a fairly extreme case, though, and one that I don't think you would've done, but I have seen time and time again new users being suspected as socks for being so familiar with things that most new users have never heard of. It's a reasonable assumption, as most socks do quack like that, but it can also be the case that the user simply did a lot of reading and lurking before registering. I myself became more active on Wikipedia in 2013 after about two years of editing Wikia, so I had familiarity with recent changes patrolling and edit reversions (or in other words, this wasn't my first rodeo, but it was my first big rodeo). I don't think 15-year-old me back then would've been able to handle the stress of being suddenly blocked for socking and having to explain that I wasn't one; most likely, I would've been driven off the project. Hindsight is 20/20, but you can never be too sure about the ripple effect your actions in the present will have on the future. —k6ka 🍁 (Talk · Contributions) 21:34, 30 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Wow, I never knew about that situation before! I imagine I missed it because I skim-read AN/ANI by second-level heading (because I navigate that way with my screen reader) and I probably heard it say "Personal attacks and unfounded accusations by User:Delicious carbuncle", thought "I don't want to hear anything about that user", and moved on. Yeah, there's no way I would have blocked in that sort of situation; compare (and maybe contrast?) my dealings on this user talk page. @Tamzin:, I feel the need to ping you here, not just because you're mentioned but because you went on to become a good wikifriend of mine and gave me some advice that maybe I should have followed more closely. If only I had done my watchlist purge then ... but the nub of the issue (how I'd gotten in to this situation in the first place) involved one of the most private aspects of a Wikipedian's work, their watchlist ... which had gotten so relatively large, it was extremely hard to turn around that ship (and I viewed my admin status and my unusually broad watchlist as almost a part of my identity). Yeah, seeing ghosts (I feel like that should bluelink somewhere) is a real problem for people who've seen a lot of sox come and go. On my disclosures page, I quote Coren's apology statement, which has become a lodestar in my own time as an admin: don't delve too deeply and quickly in the back-office aspects of the project – it's rather seedy back there and you'll end up with a jaundiced view. Not unlike mine, I suppose. My own struggles with that tension led to my poem "The Sight", which in its penultimate stanza discusses situations where new users popped up, picked fights with me that could conceivably have been good-faith (e.g. "you got XYZ wrong in this article you wrote"), and then were revealed to be sox of people I'd blocked before. How do you AGF when there's lots of evidence that you shouldn't AGF? In the end my solution was to care less. A lot less. I still have The Sight. I spot new users who clearly aren't new and I think eh, I'll block them when they show their hands, or I won't because maybe they really are here to do good—either because they're not sox, or because they are but they're turning over a new leaf, in which case I frankly don't care.

I do wish you'd taken my advice a few months ago, Graham, but I've been really impressed in everything I've seen from you since the desysop. You're clearly listening to the community's feedback in the exact way we want to see from admins. As a rule, I don't vote in RfAs anymore, but I would have been neutral in your RRfA: You're a great person, and a great admin in most regards, but I sort of spent a good chunk of my own admin career as a champion of accountability, and I wouldn't have been able to support someone who hadn't taken my accountability advice. But I'm glad it's stuck with you, and again, really thrilled with how you've handled things post-desysop. If you do run again in the future, at this point I'd be tempted to break my own rule just to vote support. Following an RFC, Wikipedia:Notability (species) was adopted as a subject-specific notability guideline.
A request for comment is open to discuss whether admins should be advised to warn users rather than issue no-warning blocks to those who have posted promotional content outside of article space.

Technical news

The Nuke feature also now provides links to the userpage of the user whose pages were deleted, and to the pages which were not selected for deletion, after page deletions are queued. This enables easier follow-up admin-actions.
