Changing indents
Hi, Do you mind not altering the indenting of my posts at Wikipedia talk:Biographies of living persons. It makes it very difficult for others to know who I was responding to. Cheers Kevin (talk) 23:53, 9 May 2009 (UTC)
- Sorry, I was trying to distinguish the responses from the existing comments. — Cheers, JackLee –talk– 05:55, 10 May 2009 (UTC)
H1N1 Influenza
There is actually a reported case of the H1N1 Influenza in Singapore. 2 are affected and they are in Tan Hock Seng Hospital.
Lex The Worm (talk) 04:01, 27 May 2009 (UTC)
- Yes, I just read the news. At the time when I left the message on the talk page of the SGpedians' notice board, there weren't any reported cases. I figured it was just a matter of time, though. — Cheers, JackLee –talk– 04:40, 27 May 2009 (UTC)
RfC on Joseph Priestley lead image alignment
A RfC has been opened to discuss the issue of alignment of the lead image on the Joseph Priestley article. Because you have previously commented or been involved with this issue at Wikipedia talk:Manual of Style, your input is requested. Please stop by Talk:Joseph Priestley#RfC on lead image alignment and leave any feedback you may have. Thank you. Madcoverboy (talk) 03:17, 18 June 2009 (UTC)
Signature
You may want to fix your signature, see this. It appears that it created some problems with the talk page layout, I could not see Sillyfolkboy's most recent comment until I removed the extra span tag. GregorB (talk) 10:13, 20 June 2009 (UTC)
- Whoops. Thanks for spotting that. Funny, it's never caused problems before, though. — Cheers, JackLee –talk– 13:56, 21 June 2009 (UTC)

Hi, Sorry what did I write that you do not agree with as I cannot find anything that has been reverted? temmaharbour
You recently left a message on my talk page asking me "Hi, Sorry what did I write that you do not agree with as I cannot find anything that has been reverted? temmaharbour". I had a look, and this relates to a change that you made to the guideline "Wikipedia:Citing sources" about a year ago, on 27 June 2008 [1]. For some unexplained reason, you inserted the sentence "Permitted use from www.maryhopkin.co.uk" in the section "General references versus inline citations". I suspect this was a mistake on your part, so I left a message on your talk page pointing it out. — Cheers, JackLee –talk– 07:54, 26 June 2009 (UTC)

To JackLee From temmaharbour No this was not a mistake I was providing information which I thought was needed after I had made an alteration
"WHy would you suspect this was a mistake on my part"? this is why I wrote asking you what had been reverted you still have not told me? THis is a long time ago how would I remember THis is why I hate using this site as it is so confusing I check in on Mary's page only as it is the only page I am interested in. So much rubbish is written on her page and it needs to be policed by someone who at least has the facts. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Temmaharbour (talk • contribs) 23:10, 26 June 2009 (UTC)
- Hi, Temmaharbour. As I explained, what I reverted was your insertion of the sentence "Permitted use from www.maryhopkin.co.uk" into the guideline "Wikipedia:Citing sources". There is absolutely no reason why that sentence should be in the guideline, so I'm afraid it was most certainly a mistake on your part, although it was probably done by accident rather than deliberately. If you were trying to add a reference into the article "Mary Hopkin" you should have done it on that page and not at "Wikipedia:Citing sources". — Cheers, JackLee –talk– 10:34, 27 June 2009 (UTC)
this is what I think happened back then... someone had taken the picture of Mary Hopkin from the page so I undid the change and put the picture back up, giving the ref of Mary's website as permission to use the picture. this whole wiki site is a complete bureaucratic waste of time. If there were not so many 'idiots' vandalising the page with sick comments I wouldnt bother visiting it to make changes.. I cannot be botherd with all this —Preceding unsigned comment added by Temmaharbour (talk • contribs) 00:06, 28 June 2009 (UTC)
- I don't know what happened a year ago at the "Mary Hopkin" article. It might have been that the photograph of Hopkin was removed because of vandalism. On the other hand, it could also have been removed because the image had not been freely licensed for use on Wikipedia. This is not a "bureaucratic waste of time". Wikipedia respects people's copyright; an editor cannot simply take an image from another website and use it in Wikipedia. Merely saying that the image was taken from Mary's website is not enough. There has to be some evidence that the owner of the image allows it to be freely used on other websites for any purpose, including commercial purposes. Look at it this way – if you had taken photographs and put them on your personal website or on a photo-sharing site such as Flickr, would you be happy if other people downloaded them and used them for their own purposes without your permission? — Cheers, JackLee –talk– 06:57, 28 June 2009 (UTC)

WebCite
Sounds good. I'm probably not the person to ask where else to leave notices, because I've only used WebCite on 3 or 4 articles, but the more awareness you can stir up, probably the better, and probably the faster Eysen will fix the situation. Softlavender (talk) 09:47, 11 July 2009 (UTC)

WP:Hornbook -- a new law-related task force for the J.D. curriculum
Hi Jacklee/General: 2009 archive,
I'm asking Wikipedians who are interested in United States legal articles to take a look at WP:Hornbook, the new "JD curriculum task force".
Our mission is to assimilate into Wikipedia all the insights of an American law school education, by reducing hornbooks to footnotes.
- Each casebook will have a subpage.
- Over the course of a semester, each subpage will shift its focus to track the unfolding curriculum(s) for classes using that casebook around the country.
- It will also feature an extensive, hyperlinked "index" or "outline" to that casebook, pointing to pages, headers, or {{anchors}} in Wikipedia (example).
- Individual law schools can freely adapt our casebook outlines to the idiosyncratic curriculum devised by each individual professor.
- I'm encouraging law students around the country to create local chapters of the club I'm starting at my own law school, "Student WP:Hornbook Editors". Using WP:Hornbook as our headquarters, we're hoping to create a study group so inclusive that nobody will dare not join.
What you can do now:
- 1. Add WP:Hornbook to your watchlist, {{User Hornbook}} to your userpage, and ~~~~ to Wikipedia:Hornbook/participants.
- 2. If you're a law student,
- Email http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WP:Hornbook to your classmates, and tell them to do the same.
- Contact me directly via talk page or email about coordinating a chapter of "Student WP:Hornbook Editors" at your own school.
- (You don't have to start the club, or even be involved in it; just help direct me to someone who might.)
- 3. Introduce yourself to me. Law editors on Wikipedia are a scarce commodity. Do knock on my talk page if there's an article you'd like help on.
Regards, Andrew Gradman talk/WP:Hornbook 01:53, 31 July 2009 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free image (File:IWASWorldWheelchairandAmputeeGames-Men's200m-T42.pdf)
Thanks for uploading File:IWASWorldWheelchairandAmputeeGames-Men's200m-T42.pdf. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).
If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of "file" pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Andrew c [talk] 22:07, 5 November 2009 (UTC)
- Hi, if you note from the image description page, the file is not orphaned. It does not appear as an image in any article, but it is cited in a footnote in the article "John McFall (athlete)" as a reference. Is there some way to prevent this file from continually being flagged for deletion when it is in use, though not as an image? — Cheers, JackLee –talk– 04:53, 6 November 2009 (UTC)
- If you want to get more input, I'd gladly take this to WP:NFCR. With that said, there is no obligation to upload sources, especially when they are not free. Just because something is not available online doesn't mean we can't cite it. We don't upload books or newspaper articles that we cite, I don't see how this is any different. Find a way to cite the source. If the source hasn't been published before, then we can't use it here because that violate WP:NOR. Again, you can cite a souce without uploading it. We do it all the time. In fact, we simply don't upload our cited sources (and if they happen to be freely licensed, they go to wikisource, not wikipedia anyway). Hope this explains it. Thanks. -Andrew c [talk] 05:04, 6 November 2009 (UTC)
- Yes, do take it to WP:NFCR. I realize that there is no general need to upload sources. However, a problem with sports-related articles is that the organizers, particularly of less prominent events such as disability sports competitions, don't always formally publish the results. What happened in this case was that I e-mailed the Chinese Taipei Paralympic Committee to ask if the information was published anywhere. I was told it was on their website, but when I informed them that I couldn't locate it, they simply e-mailed the PDF to me. I asked if they had any objections if it was uploaded to Wikipedia and they said no, but an OTRS volunteer claims that the e-mail conversation is not quite clear enough to show that the Committee has released it to Wikipedia under a free licence. I decided to upload the file to provide a source in the article since the organizers had taken the trouble to send me the information.
- If the file is determined not to be appropriate for Wikipedia, is it possible for the OTRS system to be used to verify the fact that I had a conversation with the Committee and they informed me of the information during the conversation? Can that then be mentioned in the footnote? — Cheers, JackLee –talk– 05:21, 6 November 2009 (UTC)
- See this, and feel free to add anything I left out or respond to what I wrote. Thanks. -Andrew c [talk] 15:54, 6 November 2009 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of File:UnderneaththeLintel.jpg
A tag has been placed on File:UnderneaththeLintel.jpg requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section F1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the image is an unused redundant copy (all pixels the same or scaled down) of an image in the same file format, which is on Wikipedia (not on Commons), and all inward links have been updated.
If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}}
to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Replaceable fair use File:IWASWorldWheelchairandAmputeeGames-Men's200m-T42.pdf
Thanks for uploading File:IWASWorldWheelchairandAmputeeGames-Men's200m-T42.pdf. I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this media is not replaceable, please:
- Go to the media description page and edit it to add
{{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}
, without deleting the original replaceable fair use template. - On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.
Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.
If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per our non-free content policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.
Inasmuch as this is just a text table it could be replaced by a free text table with the same information. I see that you are using it as a reference; but it is of no value as a reference, for Wikipedia is not a reliable source. (Since anybody can edit Wikipedia, if we accepted Wikipedia for references, anybody could fake data.) —teb728 t c 20:50, 6 November 2009 (UTC)
Wiki articles on Singapore law
Hi Jacklee
I'm a fresh law student in Singapore, looking to help expand the Singapore law sections on Wiki for the benefit of everyone. You seem like the eminent Wiki-ian on this, so it would be best to approach you for advice. I am an avid reader of Wikipedia but very clueless at the administrative side of it, it is very daunting even for a tech-savvy youth. I would like to contribute articles on Singapore case law, especially on landmark cases. Hope to hear from you!

Hi Jack, best of luck on the PhD. I moved your reply to Rusty into a box of its own; feel free to move it somewhere else if you prefer, or to reply to Rusty below the boxes. (Watchlisting) - Dank (push to talk) 18:02, 23 December 2009 (UTC)
- Sure, no problem. I had originally put my comment into another box, then I thought perhaps it was better to add it to Rusty's box since it was really a response to his comment rather than my views on the policy generally. (Might try and give you the latter too if I can think of something useful to say!) — Cheers, JackLee –talk– 18:12, 23 December 2009 (UTC)

Disputed non-free use rationale for File:GardarThorCortes-KatherineJenkins.jpg
Thank you for uploading File:GardarThorCortes-KatherineJenkins.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this file on Wikipedia may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the file description page and adding or clarifying the reason why the file qualifies under this policy. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your file is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a non-free use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for files used under the non-free content policy require both a copyright tag and a non-free use rationale.
If it is determined that the file does not qualify under the non-free content policy, it might be deleted by an administrator within a few days in accordance with our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you. Angus McLellan (Talk) 00:10, 31 December 2009 (UTC)
