User talk:Jack Cox/archive1
Welcome!
[edit]Hi Jack Cox, and a warm welcome to Wikipedia! I hope you have enjoyed editing as much as I did so far and decide to stay. Unfamiliar with the features and workings of Wikipedia? Don't fret! Be Bold! Here's some good links for your reference and that'll get you started in no time!
- Editing tutorial, learn to have fun with Wikipedia.
- Picture tutorial, instructions on uploading images.
- How to write a great article, to make it an featured article status.
- Manual of Style, how articles should be written.
Most Wikipedians would prefer to just work on articles of their own interest. But if you have some free time to spare, here are some open tasks that you may want to help out :
Oh yes, don't forget to sign when you write on talk pages, simply type four tildes, like this: ~~~~. This will automatically add your name and the time after your comments. And finally, if you have any questions or doubts, don't hesitate to contact me on my talk page. Once again, welcome! =)

Elections charts
[edit]Great work on the 39th election candidates, Jack! Since you are interested in elections charts, I'd like your views on a colour project that I've initiated at Talk:Canadian federal election results since 1867 Thanks. I’d like to get some consensus on what to do about colours in the elections charts, but I don’t want to get into a revert war, so I’ve asked people for their ideas before any changes are made. Some of the colours that are currently being used are too dark for some monitors so that it is difficult to read the text. The point of adding colours to the charts is to make it easier for readers to derive information from the charts. This goal is foiled by using colours dark enough to obscure the text. The Wikipedia style guide is clear on the issue:
- Use colour sparingly. Computers and browsers vary: you cannot know how much colour is presented on the recipient's machine if any. Wikipedia is international: colours have different meaning in different cultures. Too many colours on one page make them look cluttered and unencyclopedic. Use the colour red only for alerts and warnings.
Several people have suggested their ideas. Three specific proposals have been made. A vote is being undertaken between these proposals and the status quo. Please vote and/or contribute your comments. Thanks. Kevintoronto 21:34, 6 Mar 2005 (UTC)
Jack, please accept my apologies for delisting candidates you had listed as nominated. That was not my intention. It is the normal practice to not link non-notable, non-elected candidates. I had reverted your edits as I thought that is all you had done, I see now that you had re-liked non-notable candidates as well as updated the table for recent nominations. I will delink the candidates again while maintaining your updates. Thanks for all of your help on the page which I actually created some months ago :) - Jord 20:36, 17 Mar 2005 (UTC)

George Smitherman
[edit]Please stop adding claims that Smitherman is "Deputy Premier". He does not have the title (see [1] ). No Deputy Premier was appointed by McGuinty. AndyL 07:07, 25 May 2005 (UTC)
"Smitherman has taken questions when McGuinty is Away"
That would make him acting premier in that instance, not deputy premier. In the past in Ontario Deputy Premier was a formal portfolio with MPPs being officially sworn in as such. This is not the case with Smitherman. No Deputy Premier has been sworn in in Ontario under McGuinty and you will find no official reference to anyone in the McGuinty government having such a title. See the official list of cabinet ministers, no Deputy Premier. Please don't invent one. AndyL 07:14, 25 May 2005 (UTC)
Primary candidates VFD
[edit]Many of the candidates for the June 14, 2005, congressional primary have been proposed for deletion. I am writing those who worked on election articles to request that they offer their votes against the proposal. The VFD's can be found starting at Wikipedia:Votes_for_deletion/Log/2005_August_8#Peter_Fossett. It is my view that we ought to provide a complete record of the election and my deleting so called "minor" candidates we do a disservice to them and the historical record. Please vote against all these proposals.PedanticallySpeaking 14:54, August 9, 2005 (UTC)

Thank you for your interest in redesigning Template:NFL. However, this is a main component of WikiProject National Football League, an attempt to build a comprehensive and detailed guide to the NFL on Wikipedia. I reverted your edit to the 20:58, 3 August 2005 version because that format was previously discussed and argeed to on Wikipedia talk:WikiProject National Football League. If you would like to change it to your version, please discuss it on that talk page. Thanks. Zzyzx11 (Talk) 05:30, 16 August 2005 (UTC)

[edit]You worked on articles on the special election in Ohio on August 2. I have posted my articles on the nominees in that race, Jean Schmidt and Paul Hackett, at Wikipedia:Peer review and would appreciate your comments. Social Conservatisim
[edit]Social conservatisim is not the forced adherence to religon, Liberalisim is the dissulution of religon. Just to remind you, all civil law is based upon the ten commandments.
- Are you talking about the same ten commandments I know? Out of the ten, only two are laws:
don't kill don't steal
One is half is a law, if you lie under oath. It is interesting, your proposition that civil law was non-existent before the ten commandments, considering the well documented Code of Hammurabi existing previously, as well as other human societies in general, which indubitably had organizing principles that would qualify as "laws" to us. A statement so blind to history can only be construed by a discerning individual as some sillygoose spouting theistic talking points. Read up on your history. Also, your definition of liberalism leaves a little something to be desired. --B. Phillips 21:35, 20 September 2005 (UTC)

WikiProject U.S. Congress
[edit]Jack-
- You've done such a great job with the U.S. Senate lists. Why don't you add your name to the WikiProject's participants (Wikipedia:WikiProject U.S. Congress#Participants)?
- Why don't you add each of your new templates to Project's list of templates Wikipedia:WikiProject U.S. Congress#Templates and Infoboxes?
- What do you think about adding the years of the Senate (e.g. United States Senators in the 108th Congress (2005-2007))?
- Check out the "notice" I've recently added to the Talk pages of the currently existing Senate articles (93-110). See, e.g., Template talk:105th Senate.

You might also yake a loook at Wikipedia:Categories for deletion. It currently has an unresolved question about Category names for U.S. Congress members. I'd welcome your thoughts or input there. Thanks, Lou I 20:38, 14 September 2005 (UTC)
Image Tagging Image:KellyRowan.jpg
[edit]Thanks for uploading Image:KellyRowan.jpg. I notice it currently doesn't have an image copyright tag, so its copyright status is therefore unclear. Please add a tag to let us know its copyright status. (If you created/took the picture then you can use {{gfdl}} to release it under the GFDL. If you can claim fair use use {{fairuse}}.) If you don't know what any of this means, just let me know on the image description page where you got the images and I'll tag them for you. Otherwise, see Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use. If you have uploaded other images, please check that you have tagged them, too. Note that any unsourced and untagged imaged will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thanks so much. CREW 13 most corrupt
[edit]I don't think that membership in CREW's list of the 13 most corrupt members of the Congress merits inclusion in the articles about the figures who made the list. The list is one group's view of corruption at a point in time, and is not significantly more important than other accusations of corruption by other groups. I'm interested in hearing what you think. Edit summary
[edit]When editing an article on Wikipedia there is a small field labelled "Edit summary" under the main edit-box. It looks like this:
The text written here will appear on the Recent changes page, in the page revision history, on the diff page, and in the watchlists of users who are watching that article. See m:Help:Edit summary for full information on this feature.
When you leave the edit summary blank, some of your edits could be mistaken for vandalism and may be reverted, so please always briefly summarize your edits, especially when you are making subtle but important changes, like changing dates or numbers. Image copyright problem with Image:Karla Homolka.jpg
[edit]Thanks for uploading Image:Karla Homolka.jpg. However, the image may soon be deleted unless we can determine the copyright holder and copyright status. The Wikimedia Foundation is very careful about the images included in Wikipedia because of copyright law (see Wikipedia's Copyright policy).
The copyright holder is usually the creator, the creator's employer, or the last person who was transferred ownership rights. Copyright information on images is signified using copyright templates. The three basic license types on Wikipedia are open content, public domain, and fair use. Find the appropriate template in Wikipedia:Image copyright tags and place it on the image page like this: {{TemplateName}}
.
Please signify the copyright information on any other images you have uploaded or will upload. Remember that images without this important information can be deleted by an administrator. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me, or ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Adnghiem501 03:36, 30 December 2005 (UTC)
I stumbled upon this and I think that while it is relatively pertinent, the template as is is a hueas piece of clumped links of which only a few are relevant to any articleit might be added to. So I'm considering breaking it into 4 or 5 distinct templates: a dedicated one for eachseason and one overall eith only links to, say, the games, seasons and Lingo, what do you think? I will be notifying other participants of Wikiproject digimon so that discussion can be held at the wikiproject's talk page Circeus 04:00, 1 January 2006 (UTC)

Image Tagging Image:108th Senate.PNG
[edit]This image may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:108th Senate.PNG. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the image, so the copyright status is therefore unclear. If you have not created the image yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the image on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the image yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page.
If the image also doesn't have a copyright tag then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture then you can use {{GFDL}} to release it under the GFDL. If you can claim fair use use {{Non-free fair use in|article name}} or {{fairuse}}. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.
If you have uploaded other images, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find a list of image pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. - Hi, just tagging this as "fair use" is not good enough. You still have to say who made the image (you? or somebody else?). Also the {{fairuse}} tag is deprecated - use is only fair with respect to particular articles, so generic "fair use" is impossible, and at some point the template, category, and everything still in it will all go away. If the image also doesn't have a copyright tag then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture then you can use {{GFDL}} to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the image qualifies under Wikipedia's fair use guidelines, please read fair use, and then use a tag such as {{Non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use. If you want the image to be deleted, tag it as {{db-unksource}}.
If you have uploaded other images, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. Conrad Black
[edit]Hi,
I notice that a while ago you added Conrad Black to the category Knights Commander of the British Empire. I've done a search of the London Gazette looking for an announcement of such a knighthood being awarded to him but I can't find anything. I find it doubtful with his current legal problems that the Queen would bestow such an honour upon him. I am wondering where you came accross this information ? Please repond on my talk page. Thanks Dowew 19:46, 5 March 2006 (UTC)
OscarTop
[edit]Hello, I noticed that you created a new set of templates for Oscar recipients. Unfortunately, when these are implemented in an article, the text is overlapping with the infobox. I've tried to correct this by adjusting Template:OscarTop, but my feeble efforts haven't made things any better. Can you take a look? -- MisterHand 18:58, 6 March 2006 (UTC)
I don't mind the Oscar temps, but I moved them to the bottom near each actor's filmography for style reasons. Crumbsucker 01:28, 7 March 2006 (UTC)

Good collection, but they don't belong in that Namespace. I think you may want to move them to your User page. See Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Governor Templates. —Markles 21:41, 11 March 2006 (UTC)
I like that you're standardizing these templates. However, the names are now too small to read. Maybe you could use {{SuccessorSeries}} for all of them? —Markles 22:59, 11 March 2006 (UTC)
The names were too small. Look at the hundreds of other navigational templates here. You'll see that they don't use font-size:90% and <small>. I'm just trying to keep the legibility of these templates relatively consistent. Look at Franklin Roosevelt, which uses {{NYGovernors}}— the templates ought to have some consistency, right? —Markles 05:40, 12 March 2006 (UTC)
Hey, why the Wikipedia:Revert war? Haven't you considered what I've written in my edit summaries and messages to you? Look at Franklin Roosevelt, for instance. Please. —Markles 18:52, 13 March 2006 (UTC)

Image copyright problem with Image:Jnicklaus.jpg
[edit]Thanks for uploading Image:Jnicklaus.jpg. The image has been identified as not specifying the copyright status of the image, which is required by Wikipedia's policy on images. Image copyright problem with Image:MeDavid.jpg
[edit]Thanks for uploading Image:MeDavid.jpg. However, the image may soon be deleted unless we can determine the copyright holder and copyright status. The Wikimedia Foundation is very careful about the images included in Wikipedia because of copyright law (see Wikipedia's Copyright policy).
The copyright holder is usually the creator, the creator's employer, or the last person who was transferred ownership rights. Copyright information on images is signified using copyright templates. The three basic license types on Wikipedia are open content, public domain, and fair use. Find the appropriate template in Wikipedia:Image copyright tags and place it on the image page like this: {{TemplateName}}
.
Please signify the copyright information on any other images you have uploaded or will upload. Remember that images without this important information can be deleted by an administrator. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me. Thank you. Shyam (T/C) 21:45, 21 March 2006 (UTC)

American Politics
[edit]Yikes, you might want to archive some of this. Anyway, to the point. If you are liberal and interested in American politics and know political history, if you ever run across Hofstadter's American Politcal Tradition and the Men Who Made It in a used book store pick it up, it's an interesting excersize in rhetoric. State treasurers template problem
[edit]Template:U.S. State Treasurers might be better having a more ambiguous name. William Donald Schaefer, who is listed on this template for Maryland, is not the Treasurer of Maryland, but is the Comptroller of Maryland. Both are two separate offices, but the Comptroller is the chief financial officer of the state. I assume your intention was to create a template for the chief financial officers. --tomf688{talk} 03:21, 28 March 2006 (UTC)

Hello
[edit]Just a quick question. As i was browsing your babel boxes (looking for some to borrow) and i noticed that you have one that says you like cigars and another that says you detest tobacco smoke. Now, this got me confused. Because seeing as you also had a box that says you dislike second hand smoke, and guessing or gaussing rather, that you probably smoke cigars not to inhail them, then presumibly smoke would be present. I am flustered as to the contradictoriness of the two, or presumibly three boxes. I would appriciate a response when time permits and that all or a few of the boxes that contradict each other be removed. Thank you. --Gephart 06:29, 23 April 2006 (UTC)
- Sorry, i didnt mean to upset or piss you off, i was just curious. I apologize if i offended you, seeing as that was not my intention. {{MAGovernors}} and {{NYGovernors}}
[edit]What's the problem with my well-explained edits that you have to revert them without the courtesy of a civil explanation? I've considered everything you've said about smaller-sized fonts. I've asked other people for their opinions. And then I gave in to you and I made the font smaller. (See my latest edit to Template:MAGovernors.)
I even said, "OK, User:Jack Cox, you win. I've used a smaller font-size but kept the standardized template." (See id.)
Why did you AGAIN revert me without comment or explanation? —Markles 23:18, 23 April 2006 (UTC)
The whole Massachusetts New York Thing
[edit]THERE IS NO INDIVIDUAL style for each different box there is one universal style for all that's why I've reverted. I'm getting to the point where you have driven me to madness and i want to say you to please kindly mind your own ****ing business.--Jack Cox 02:18, 25 April 2006 (UTC)
- Your inappropriate rudeness and foul language notwithstandng, I appreciate your getting back to me.
- As you request, I am applying a universal style.
- As you have previously requested, I reduced the font size.
- I complied with your requests. That was insufficient for you. You wouldn't take "yes" for an answer. It has left me with the only option that you want to apply your own standards without regard for the edits of fellow Wikipedia editors, or the reading needs of Wikipedia readers.
- As for minding my own business, what does that mean?
- If you want to have a revert war, the least you could do is explain the reasons for your revert and consider the opinions expressed by other editors. —Markles 12:39, 25 April 2006 (UTC)

Marijuana Wiki
[edit]Hi there,
A fellow Canadian with Asperger's eh?
I see that you are a pro-Cannabis Wikipedian so I hope this will be of some interest to you.
I've started a Marijuana wiki (aka The Sticky Wiki) which I think you might be interested in. I'm hoping you can help me get started with this project. Whereas lots of articles about weed get speedy-deleted on Wikipedia, they would be totally cool over at MarijuanaWiki. But really I want the site to be more of a marijuana community than merely an encyclopedia.
To give you an example, I want to have city guides about where to score, find pot-friendly cafes, marijuana events, and what represents a good price in that city. Etc. (You can check out the featured article: "Toronto" to see what I mean). I also want to have grow diaries and marijuana blogs. All in all, basically more communal than encyclopedic.
I am in need of admins/moderators, and people experienced with MediaWiki to help build policy, categories, and templates, etc. If you'd be interested in helping me with this project, the URL is MarijuanaWiki
Thanks for your time and consideration. Hope to see you there!

Hey, a couple of things. The audience isn't 100% certain if she is dead or not, this will probably be confrimed or changed (i.e. she may be in a coma) when the 4th season comes along. So unless there is an offical source saying she is dead please leave it as unknown. Also please leave plot endings in the spoiler alert section, we don't want to ruin the story for someone just browsing pages. Thanks --DragonWR12LB 03:10, 22 May 2006 (UTC)
Stuff
[edit]When editing an article on Wikipedia there is a small field labeled "Edit summary" under the main edit-box. It looks like this:
The text written here will appear on the Recent changes page, in the page revision history, on the diff page, and in the watchlists of users who are watching that article. See m:Help:Edit summary for full information on this feature.
Filling in the edit summary field greatly helps your fellow contributors in understanding what you changed, so please always fill in the edit summary field, especially for big edits or when you are making subtle but important changes, like changing dates or numbers.
