Thank you for that, Frze.

I appreciate that you had some mopping up to do, and can only apologise. But the Wiki page on Footnotes does not seem to show where I went wrong in transferring each citation individually into the new text.

Aside from that, I would just make two points. One is that the article carries a tag, requesting updates. Many of the references and citations that I deleted were topical in the first weeks after the disaster, but would be of no interest afterwards. Second, I don't see what is so sacred about the work of 'other Wikipedian authors'. Long-winded entries often need editing-down. Also many of my own contributions have been savaged for no good reason over the years.

Hello Frze, Some nut case came along and vandalized (I think this is the right term for what s/he did) the entire p. and you seemed to undo all crazy stuff. Guns of the Timberland reference problem fix

FRZE - Thanks for looking at the ref issue I had with the Guns of the Timberland. I saw that there were no footnotes showing up on the article after I did the final save and was working on fixing it. It took a bit to figure it out--I thought that since there was a "==references==" included the footnotes would have appeared but I needed the tag that you added. I am curious, how did you find out about my problem so quickly?

I am having a hard time finding sufficient documentation for the <ref>. . .</ref> tag that can be used in Wikipedia. Trying to deduce what <ref name="test">[http://www.example.org Link text], additional text.</ref> will produce in practice is a bit obscure to me. Currently I am looking at previous articles and sort of deduce what is needed and what can be done. Could you tell me where I could find a more complete documentation for how to create a Reference tag?

John Paul II

Thank you for fixing that....I was mainly editing it to 'fix and update' the ISBNs (the article was in an error cat I've been working) but I run the advisor script while I am at it, and since that article had so many dashes I ran 'find' on all three types and looked at the context to get which type was which right. I'm guessing I just didn't notice that that 'phrase' was the ref name, and not the title. :/

Mostly, thanks for actually 'fixing' it instead of just reverting me....recalculating all the ISBNs in an article that big was quite a pain.

Lesson learned...don't trust the 'rendering' in the WikEd "show changes below" (the one that gives the red-and-green differences) to catch breaking a ref name. :P Revent (talk) 08:35, 10 July 2013 (UTC)

I think your edit summary is too generous. To me, any edit by an anonymous editor which causes damage is in the first place vandalism. It is very tedious to report vandalism officially, but I certainly include that on the edit summary. (Or use something like Twinkle which says it for me.) I have just realised that the damage was done by Visual Editor while saving my edit, because I never touched that section. Read the article

I cited Steen twice in Homer Davenport, there was a formatting error where I used quotation marks in the ref name= tag in one place but not the other. So instead of commenting out the source, you could have fixed the formatting error with a simple word search. Or, if you were too lazy to do that, then put a note at talk stating that there appeared to be an error. Your "fix" was not helpful and did not actually identify the problem that required fixing. I have contributed to over a dozen featured articles and over 30 GAs, my co-editor on this project has even more. So do not lecture me about how to format, we're doing an article improvement, improvements are incremental and sometimes have typos. It's one thing to drop a tag or a note on the talk page, it's another thing to F**k up other people's work by screwing up the formatting even worse. Per Wikipedia:DEMOLISH, tag it or actually fix it. Rollback rights given to Frze

Can you please explain to me your reasons for allowing Frze to rollback my warning to him to not conduct his edit-waring argument in the article The Bill on the actual article page. I told him that the correct place to do this was on the talk page. What he did defaced the article with large amounts of BOLD RED TYPE in the very first sentence of the introduction. I hasten to add that what he was arguing about was another editors changing of 'is' to 'was' a 'police procedural' TV series. I had no argument with his rationale (in fact I wholeheartedly agreed with the context ) but objected to him arguing on the actual article page. Please explain. I granted Frze rollback rights because they requested them here; in my review of their request, I did not find anything to warrant denying their request, although it is possible that I could have been wrong. • No I can't, because I removed the offending text in The Bill article at the time that I warned him because it was the simplest thing to do. But I do suggest you drop by his talk page where he is right now having a similar dispute with Montanabw. All that I wrote about Frze was related to his vandalism of The Bill article, which produced two glaringly bold errors which were highlighted in red text. I reverted his vandalism and told another editor, Montanabw, about it as she was having the same problem with him on an article, Homer Davenport, that she was making a major contribution to. It is obvious to me that he hasn't got any more than a rudimentary comprehension of English.The Dart (talk) 12:12, 24 September 2013 (UTC)

To be fair, The Dart, when someone commits vandalism, their intent is to deliberately and maliciously degrade the quality of the encyclopedia; I don't think that Frze's edits constitute malicious intent. I also don't think that Frze's edits (the ones I've reviewed, anyway) to either The Bill or Homer Davenport warrant blocking them or revoking their rollback rights; that is why I asked for specific diffs, as I haven't found any edits were Frze introduced an error/red text into the The Bill article. However, Frze, after looking through some of your rollbacks, I am concerned. Could you explain to me how any of the following edits were vandalism? Some look more like good-faith accidents than vandalism and should have been reverted with a proper explanation: [1] [2] [3] [4] [5] In addition, while I said removing messages from your talk page is fine, using rollback to do so is a misuse of the rollback tool.

I can no longer actually find it in the form (red text) that I found it in before I deleted it, but he was arguing the point on the actual article page instead of the talk page. Seeing as how Dart brought this to my attention, I'll just note for the record (don't need any action at this time, just an FYI only, FWIW) that Frze commented out a source I inserted in the Homer Davenport article that WAS being used for inline footnotes, but there were typos in the formatting (I left out some quotation marks) that created the appearance of a source that was not used in the article body text. When I undid his changes, with a snippy remark, I admit, he reverted me with a lecture about proper formatting. Then I got really snippy with Frze about it because it made more work for me to clean up - and because Wehwalt and I are prepping the piece for GA, and it's lot of work, I was particularly short-fused about a drive-by edit like that and took it to Frze's talk. But he has backed down, and appears to be exhibiting good will, so as far as I am concerned, that issue is settled, but if you're wondering, that's what happened. Some of this may well be related to a language issue, but I cannot say for sure. Not a big deal at this point, though I wish he would have dropped the stick after the first revert. @Montanabw: We both are working to wikipedia to make it better - you as profi in your text editions, and me as little "Wiki Janitor". What I do is clearing up a lot (thousands) of petty minor ref-errors of other editors, pages with missing references list or incorrect ref-formating. @Acalamari: Thanks for mediation of the dispute cases. You are right, I should be more carefully in my edit work and have to leave with explanation, if they seem rather like good-faith accidents than vandalism. You said removing messages from my talk page is permitted. My opinion is anyway how: manually, with the button <undo> or using rollback function - to do so is a not misuse of the rollback tool, just easier and faster. Thank you for the barnstar! And thanks for posting the issue to the WP:VPT! It looks like it's been added to Special:AbuseFilter/345, which will tag matching edits with "Extraneous formatting" and give the editor this warning.

I found it by inputting each of the html tags into Google, one-by-one, and looking through first page of results, until I found something that looked relevant. The string that turned up useful results was "google-src-text". Sophus Bie ^(talk) 03:15, 26 September 2013 (UTC)

Hi Frze. This one is still a mystery to me, perhaps others can comment, but until then I am going to assume that the people that made these edits got their content by doing a copy/paste from a website, capturing everything including the JavaScript and HTML code. I don't think the MediaWiki software produced this by clicking any button on Wikipedia. I'm glad you reverted it. —Prhartcom (talk) 05:56, 25 September 2013 (UTC)

I think I may have solved the mystery! It looks like these IPs are perhaps copypasting text translated into English from Google Translate. If you take a look at this article discussing Google Translate, at the very end it says that "Upon copying the text ... I noticed that both languages were put onto the clipboard. Intrigued, I had a look at the source code ... both the original texts are included 'side-by-side' in the source code, with the original text enclosed between "google-src-text" <SPAN> tags," which is a lot like what we see in the examples you provided. Aha! That's pretty interesting! Do you think perhaps one of us should bring this issue up at WP:Village Pump (technical)? If you've run into it hundreds of times, then it's probably going to keep on happening. Tried and errored: It is impossible to edit the page from the translated text out directly in Google translator. Only by COPY AND PASTE from Google translator.
What I do is clearing up as little "Wiki Janitor" a lot (thousands) of petty minor ref-errors of other editors, pages with missing references list or incorrect ref-formating. I checked such errors and simply reverted (by <undo> or <rollback>), but User:Acalamari told me not to do so. They are good-faith accidents and should have been reverted with a proper explanation.
Now we know the cause of this errors. There is no need for action in my opinion. Is it very difficult to detect such errors automatically?? It's going to keep on happening. But if a filter can be programmed to detect: <span class="notranslate" onmouseover= and stop saving (like website spam filter) instead saying: Do not use Google Translator text. • Cannot prohibit Google Translate as a technical restriction: There are too many acceptable uses of text from Google Translate, such as alternative song titles in other languages, and so we cannot claim a technical reason to forbid it. In some objectionable cases, Google Translate might have been used to improperly generate text from a plagiarized section; however, other users have been translating original text from other-language wikipedias, to have English-language pages added/expanded here. Restrictions might have to be merely voluntary warnings written into various essays, such as "wp:About translating German Wikipedia" or others. Broken Ethnologue links

Thanks for helping out. Once you've verified that the info is citable to the 17th edition, you can fix the cross-ref link by simply changing "e16" to "e17". However, you probably shouldn't leave the name "e16" if you link to the current edition, as here.[11] That's currently the 17th but will update to the 18th in a couple years. If you haven't verified that the info is still found in the 17th, and that their opinion hasn't changed, then you should probably either leave it broken (though that's no guarantee that the next person along won't do the same thing) or link to the archive of the 16th edition. — kwami (talk) 07:30, 10 October 2013 (UTC)

BACKLOG OF THE WEEK Category:Pages with broken reference names

Hello - some editors fight off the vandal hordes, as I do repairing pages with citation errors. If I didn't - there would be a large backlog in Category:Pages with incorrect ref formatting and in Category:Pages with missing references list as in Category:Pages with broken reference names (more than 1500 yesterday). But it is impossible to work it alone. Do you know how to do a "Blitz" (excuse the comparision) to find willing editors to work on it. It is much more easier to repair references if you do it one hour, one day or one week ago after the errors were made instead of months and years after the error was done. Very, very difficult to find these errors.

Only with WikiBlame Search it is possible to find and repair such errors.

@Frze I monitor certain backlog categories using {{User:TheJJJunk/Backlog}}, a template I made:

I believe Wikipedia:WikiProject Citation cleanup might be a good place to find other editors interested in fixing pages with citation errors. Through that project, you could organize a backlog elimination drive as a sort of "blitz". The backlog elimination drives done by WikiProject Guild of Copy Editors or those done by WikiProject Wikify are good examples of how backlog elimination drives are organized.

Undo 2 or more Versions

In der en.WP gibt es keine Sichtung wie in der de.WP. Z. B. bei Vandalismus gibt es die Möglichkeit des "Rollback" ohne jegliche Zugriffsmöglichkeit bzw. nur mit umständlicher Einsichtnahme in ältere Versionen und Show Changes, wenn ein Benutzer in mehreren Schritten vandaliert hat.

@Cyphoidbomb:I am a rollbacker. So you could revert/undo two or more versions in one quick step, but it is impossible to correct something. Undo is possible only for the last version, and it allows me to correct the revert. My question: The german Wikipedia has the tool "Rückgängig" for more versions with possibility of correction. The english Wikipedia needs the tool Undo 2 or more Versions. If you will do it, it is very difficult to go in the history to check the last versions, then edit one, click the button "Show changes"... Three or more steps. @Frze:I think that the equivalent of 'Rückgängig' is 'undo'. (And 'undo' is different from 'revert'(rollback)). 'Undo' allows you to undo multiple revisions and also allows you to correct. To undo: go to history →‎ select the revisions using radio buttons →‎ click 'Compare selected revisions' →‎ click 'undo'. I have now a similar problem with Harness_bend, gallery will not show even though the pictures are my own, uploaded to commons, with no license reservations, and used successfully in the Turkish equivalent of the same page. While trying to figure this out I have commented, not erased, the gallery code in the wiki code of the page. What can I do to make sure they show on the English version of the page? Chris19231: File:Open Europe's London Office.jpg is not his own as he wrote but File:FaithHouseTuftonStreet.jpeg. Frze, you may want to make a report at WP:AN/I, if you feel that an administrator needs to intervene. I am not an administrator, just a rollbacker like yourself. I agree that the user seems to be inclined to make unconstructive/misrepresentative contributions, but there really is no action that I can take myself. Again, a submission to WP:AN/I would probably be your best bet. Be careful with the name-calling, though. Might I suggest on controversial articles that are in the process of substantial revision that you post a message to the talk page before doing a revert like that. This article in particular is being worked out with a great deal of strained consensus and multiple editors are contributing. @MrBill3: Sorry - a revert and a notification to the user who caused the cite errors is the easiest and simplest way to clean up these problems, because some users have been working hard on Category:Pages with citation errors. Is it too much to ask you to explain what is the relevance of some users have been working hard on Category:Pages with citation errors, and why that can allow disregard of the work of others mentioned by MrBill3. You evidently made a knee-jerk revert without bothering to consider the current discussion and proposals on the article's Talk page. That was not helpful.
