copyedit on Viking Raid of Seville

[edit]

Hi! Thanks for your excellent copyedit on Viking raid on Seville (844). I just thought I should point out one thing: the Manual of Style discourages the use of ordinals in dates (e.g., September 25th) (see MOS:BADDATE). It's not as poetic, but it's felt that dates should be in a standard format for clarity. Just letting you know so you don't spend too much time changing them the other way.

Oh, I like your "No ellipses" userbox! That's one of my pet peeves as well, you'll see them a fair bit on the old copyedit-tagged articles. – Reidgreg (talk) 15:29, 20 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Reidgreg: Thank you for pointing me to that page! I will make sure to write dates properly in future edits. — EveDK (talk) 07:29, 21 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Userbox requests

[edit]

If you'd like me to make a specific userbox, please outline your criteria within this section. I'd appreciate if you would start with a level 2 header bearing the name by which you'd like me to call the userbox. You can watch my talk page so you'll be notified when I respond here regarding your userbox request. Thanks!

Time_plus_time_zone

[edit]

Hi, EveDK! I would like for you to create a userbox, like Template:Time userbox, only with a time zone number added (offset from UTC), and without the (Purge to update) text. Thus the text would look like this:

It is approximately H:M AM/PM in this user's locale. (+/- H:M)

Or, as an example:

It is approximately 3:53 PM in this user's locale. (-05:00)

There is already a userbox which looks like this, only with a different image, and with the actual location. This userbox is: User:Arjun G. Menon/Userboxes/My Time

I consider this to be too personal (as it discloses where I live, or where I say I live, at least). Also, I think that the time zone difference is important, so people know how far off you are from the default time (UTC).

Thank you!

Hi, Noah Kastin! I'd be happy to make this for you. Do you have a preference as to what image I use? Here are a few I like:
Clocks alone
Clocks with globes/maps
EveDK (talk) 07:32, 6 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I really like that first picture! Could you use that one? Noah Kastin (talk) 07:37, 6 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, and thanks for noticing my post and responding. Noah Kastin (talk) 07:39, 6 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
How's this?

That second one looks great! I'll use that. Noah Kastin (talk) 08:30, 6 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for creating the userbox! Unfortunately, when I tried using it, I discovered three problems:
  1. When there is no plus or minus sign, time appears 2 hours behind. For example, when entering -05 should change the time to 4:07 AM, the time is changed to 2:07 AM.
  2. There is always a minus sign before the time difference, so adding a minus sign results in a double minus sign (--), and adding a plus sign results in a minus sign, following by a plus sign (-+).
  3. Adding a colon after the hour number of the time difference (e.g. 05:00), even if the other two problems have been avoided, results in the time which it is for the user turning into the words:
Error: Invalid time.
in red. For example, a message might read: (substituting underlined words for red words)
It is approximately Error: Invalid time. where this user is editing. (-05:00)
Thank you again for creating the userbox! It already looks amazing!
Noah Kastin (talk) 09:21, 6 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for reporting these issues. I think I've fixed them:
Code Result
{{User:EveDK/Userboxes/Time plus time zone|-5|-05:00}}
It is approximately 7:23 AM where this user is editing. (-05:00)
Usage
This now takes two arguments, the first being the number of hours to be added to/subtracted from Greenwich time (ex. "-5"), and the second being what appears in the parentheses (ex. "-05:00"), as shown above. I realize using two arguments is slightly less convenient than using a single one; however, it ought to work, and when and if I figure out how to make it work with a single argument, I will update the userbox and notify you here.
EveDK (talk) 00:59, 7 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you so much for updating the userbox! I have now added it to my user page, and after I figured out how to make it work, it works perfectly! Again, thank you so much for tweaking it until it was what I wanted and it really worked! Noah Kastin (talk) 08:43, 7 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
By the way, the text in the previous comment was struck through by me, as it gave a mis-representation of what I meant to say. There was nothing wrong with the explanation for how the userbox works, I just forgot to look at the explanation before trying to use the userbox. Sorry for any confusion that may cause. No_ellipses

[edit]

Hi, EveDK! I would like for you to make a userbox for me. This userbox would, ideally, have an icon showing something like this:

•••

and would have text like this:

This user deletes unquoted ellipses.

I know another userbox already exists with the same general message (this one), but I would prefer a somewhat friendlier userbox.

Also note: The dots used are not periods (.), but are instead this sign (•), because strikethrough on periods looks like this:

...

which is not the effect I would like.

Thanks!

Noah Kastin (talk) 05:22, 16 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Further requests: Can you make the icon box D1FFFF, and the text box 5C5C5C? Thanks! Noah Kastin (talk) 07:29, 16 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Noah Kastin,
Sorry for the wait. How does this look?
Code Result
{{User:EveDK/Userboxes/No ellipses}}
This user deletes unquoted ellipses.

EveDK, this userbox looks great! I have now put it on my user page. Thanks for making the userbox! Noah Kastin (talk) 04:36, 29 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

knowsNotableIRLIndirectly

[edit]

Hi, EveDK! I would like if you would make either a userbox or an extension of User:EveDK/Userboxes/knowsNotableIRL. This userbox or userbox extension would look like User:EveDK/Userboxes/knowsNotableIRL, except that it would end with (through X other users/people) or something like that. This would make text appear like so:

This user knows Person in real life (through X other users/people).

X should be an adjustable parameter, where the number you enter replaces X. There should also be something you can enter instead of X to avoid disclosing how many people are involved.

The way I imagine that this userbox could be an extension of User:EveDK/Userboxes/knowsNotableIRL would be if the (X) parameter were added to the User:EveDK/Userboxes/knowsNotableIRL userbox in such a way that, if left out, it would omit the (through X other users/people) text.

If you can make this userbox or userbox extension, I would greatly appreciate that!

Thanks!

Noah Kastin (talk) 21:01, 7 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@EveDK: Thinking again, this userbox would probably be unnecessary, as User:EveDK/Userboxes/knowsNotableIRL would probably be sufficient for my purposes. Noah Kastin (talk) (🖋) 23:10, 13 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Noah Kastin: I apologize for not making this userbox for you earlier. If at some point you decide it would actually be useful, feel free to let me know, and I will do my best to create it promptly. EveDK (talk) 01:36, 14 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@EveDK: It's ok, and thanks for the offer! Noah Kastin (talk) (🖋) 02:14, 14 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
