Peer Feedback
[edit]Hey Ekarajic,
Looking good. You've expanded into other sections which is smart, the original is lacking information. I found a source that you can possibly mind for other sources but I wouldn't necessarily use it as one outright. It is a university project that looks like a middle school aged kid did it but it does appear to have relevant information on your topic, especially the immigration section which you need some information for. Here is the link: http://www.umich.edu/~ac213/student_projects07/transgang/immigration.html
One thing that you may want to think about is to sub-group the 'Violence' and 'Drug trafficking' under the 'Gangs' section. Most of the information you have currently relates to gangs so it would help the flow. Another thing you want to look at is the term 'dmg'. It is used at least twice and not explained at all with links or a definition. It is really confusing to read as it has no context. You'll want to expand your lead-in by a couple sentences. You can potentially draw from the original article to do so.
I went ahead and fixed a couple grammatical errors and spacing issues. I also moved the 'Causes' section up to help with the flow of sections (i.e. causes -> gangs instead of gangs -> causes). I was going to fix reference 10. but the link had nothing there so I had to leave it. It could be that you accidentally copied the wrong link and pasted it into the reference. I couldn't fix 6. as well because it was part of a list and I'm not sure where exactly that information came from. You'll have to fix 4. as well, it only has a partial reference. I bolded 'Crime in El Salvador' as well to signify that was the title of your article.
Keep it up though. I know you've been looking for a picture which hopefully you'll be able to find. If you have any questions about my comments or need any assistance just let me know! Tapbh (talk) 02:29, 2 November 2013 (UTC)
Prof. V Feedback Pre-first Draft
[edit]Hi Erkarajik! I encourage you to push very hard for the draft due on the 8th. There is much content to be added. You have several good sources that you list on your user page that are not incorporated. Time to add them! I would like you to write a paragraph on each of the following:
- Causes – Discuss here why youth join gangs and how they proliferated in El Salvador. what are the sociological factors for gang involvement (bringing gang culture from U.S., lack of opportunity for youth in terms of education and jobs. You mention these quickly, but can you explain them each in a sentence, with a cited reference?
- Gangs – list here the gangs and their origins of each (when each arose, notable factors of each). There is a contradiction in your article – one part says mara salvatrucha is most important, while another section says M-18 and MS-13 are the largest. Or are they connected? Explain the “map of gangs” to us as you see in the literature.
- Violence – The language is in this section lacks a neutral point of view. This is where a sociological perspective from the literature can help. What can you say about the types of violence and the way this violence is perceived.
- Links to drug trafficking – maybe connect this with violence in a section called “criminal activity?”
- Impacts on youth: Your articles tell us that “being young” is criminalized through the discourse that circulates about gangs in El Salvador. Please do the most work here – this is the point that needs to be brought from the literature: that because of the terror circulating around gangs in El Salvador, sociologists have found that instead of seeing youth as a group in need of help and development, they are seen as criminals to be feared and controlled.

Merge
[edit]I suspect this draft article was mistakenly created, by a contributor not aware that we already had an article on Crime in El Salvador - it seems to have been misnamed, as it should never have been placed in 'Wikipedia:...' namespace. As content seems to have been merged into the original article (see [1]), this misplaced draft should probably be deleted - except that I'm not sure we can do this while preserving the editing history. A bit of a puzzle... AndyTheGrump (talk) 05:53, 30 August 2014 (UTC)
