[edit]Thank you for your contributions. Please remember to mark your edits as "minor" only if they truly are minor edits. In accordance with Help:Minor edit, a minor edit is one that the editor believes requires no review and could never be the subject of a dispute. Minor edits consist of things such as typographical corrections, formatting changes, or rearrangement of text without modification of content. Additionally, the reversion of clear-cut vandalism and test edits may be labeled "minor". Thank you. -- RP459 Talk/Contributions 23:03, 4 July 2010 (UTC)
Disambiguation link notification for March 16
[edit]Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Love Me, Love Me Not (game show), you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page TVS. Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

[edit]Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Harold Shipman, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page ITV (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

[edit]I'm afraid to tell you that despite your persistence you are wrong. In the British honours system, an honour is superseded by a higher grade within the same order. Once Walker became CBE he was no longer OBE. -- Necrothesp (talk) 23:09, 28 December 2019 (UTC)
Thanks, yes, I understand that a CBE is higher than an OBE. However, surely the fact that Walker was also awarded the OBE should still be there after his name, if only to make people aware straight away that he hasn't just entered the honours system at CBE level. By your argument, entries for people such as Sir Elton John should also lose other honorifics after the first mention of their name.Cybersub (talk) 12:27, 29 December 2019 (UTC)
- The fact he was awarded the OBE first is in the text of the article. In the first line, we use the postnominals as they are actually used. Not sure what point you're making with Elton John, to be honest, as he is also described in the first line with the postnominals that are used. -- Necrothesp (talk) 10:21, 3 January 2020 (UTC)

Hi Alex 21. The text is not protected by any copyright. As I said in the edit summary, it was taken from the BBC Media Centre, which is free to use. Cybersub (talk) 12:12, 29 December 2019 (UTC)
- Cybersub, hi - I was reviewing Alex 21's revdel request just now, and went to the BBC Media Centre's website. This does indeed state that the copy can be used free of charge, but if you review the section on Public Domain Sources at PLAG, you'll see that text copied from sources like this needs to be properly attributed, through the use of a citation and an attribution template in the references section of the article. Simply putting the web address in your edit summary doesn't seem like an adequate way to attribute the content. Would you be willing to address this? GirthSummit (blether) 15:34, 29 December 2019 (UTC)
- Girth Summit, can you please show me where exactly it states
that the copy can be used free of charge
? Thank you. -- /Alex/21 15:35, 29 December 2019 (UTC)- Alex 21, at the top of the page, on the right, under 'About Program Information' - it says
All copy within Programme Information can be used free of charge on condition that it credits the relevant BBC programme or service.
I think that their condition that we credit them would likely be satisfied by a citation and attribution template, if properly applied; I don't think that it's satisfied by a note in an edit summary in the article's history (and nor are our policies, even if the beeb didn't make this a requirement). Many thanks for your input, Girth Summit. Very helpful. Seems a reasonable compromise. What do you say, Alex 21? Mind you, the BBC is also supposed to be credited by media organisations for the free use of its pictures but people rarely do and it doesn't mind as it's still free publicity for its programmes :) - Cybersub (talk) 18:28, 29 December 2019 (UTC)
- Cybersub, Alex 21 - I'm afraid this isn't going to fly. Since posting here last, I've had a conversation with another admin who is more fluent than I am with copyright (both with the law, and with our policies). I'm afraid that they have indicated that even with the BBC's disclaimer at the top of the page, that is not sufficient for our purposes - we can't copy and paste content from that site, even if we were to use a citation and attribution template. The Beeb would need to make a more formal statement, indicating what type of license they release the content under, before we'd be able to consider using it. So, I've gone ahead and performed Alex's requested revdel; Cybersub, please remember this for future reference, our policies require us to be very careful about copyright, and copy/pasting from the web is fraught with risk. Cheers both GirthSummit (blether) 18:33, 29 December 2019 (UTC)
- Hi Cybersub - thinking about this a bit more, I wonder whether this is the kind of content that you've added to other articles? I 100% accept that you've been editing in good faith, and I'm not making any kind of threat of sanctions here, but if you've added content copied in this way anywhere else it will need to be removed. If so, it would be really helpful if you could put together a list of articles, so we can check and remove where necessary. Sorry to be a pain, but it's something we have to take quite seriously - any help you'd be willing to offer would be appreciated. Cheers GirthSummit (blether) 19:53, 29 December 2019 (UTC)
Hi Girth Summit. Thanks for your messages. Sorry for the delay in replying but I've been away. Fully understand what you're saying and sincere apologies for inadvertently causing any problems. As you say - and thank you for acknowledging it - this particular content was added in good faith and was in no way intended to violate any copyright. This isn't the kind of content I usually add but I'll have a look at previous contributions for you and get back to you again asap. Best wishes - Cybersub (talk) 16:15, 31 December 2019 (UTC)
- Cybersub, thanks, I appreciate that. Copyright can be tricky, and our policies are very cautious - if you do find anything that you think might not be OK, just let me know and I'll revdel the revisions. (Feel free to take a moment to paraphrase it if you like to avoid the problem, so only historic versions will need to be revdelled). Cheers GirthSummit (blether) 17:20, 31 December 2019 (UTC)
Hi Girth Summit. I've now gone through my entire history of contributions and, as indicated earlier, can confirm that I have not written any articles or created any pages. Basically, my contributions over the years have consisted of corrections, updates and amends, none of which has been copyright-sensitive. The only thing that struck me that might now be seen as problematical was within a section that I created on animator Nick Park's Wikipedia page on 2nd December 2019 about him being a nominated 'Preston Legend' and - as such - a students' union meeting room at the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) being named after him. Park subsequently sent UCLan a message to say how honoured he was, with UCLan publishing it on its website, and I included his message. As it's in the public domain, I believed that it was OK to use it, but bearing in mind the above discussion I've now deleted the message and simply written that Park sent UCLan a message to say how honoured he was, and I've retained the link to the source material. I am also happy to confirm that the wording of the 'Preston Legend' section is entirely mine and original. I'm going to be unavailable now for a while, sorry, but I hope that this is all satisfactory. Best wishes - Cybersub (talk) 19:26, 31 December 2019 (UTC)
- Cybersub, that's all fine, and thanks for taking the time to check it's much appreciated. Happy new year! GirthSummit (blether) 19:50, 31 December 2019 (UTC)
