Re: Honorific Titles in Popular Music
To the editor/s,
I wish to comment/discuss on why I believe the honorific title of Empress of Soul to Mary J Blige should be remove from the above wiki page:
1. I believe the title/s should be in common use. If you google 'the empress of soul' you will get 1000's of references to Gladys Knight, however if you google "the empress of soul mary j blige' the 1st link will be from a the 2009 Billboard article as cited in the wiki page, the 2nd link will be the wiki page itself, and the rest all refer to Gladys Knight or links that include Gladys Knight as The Empress of Soul, and Mary J. Blige.
I see there has been a 2nd citation added today, however other than repeats of the Billboard article you will be hard pressed to find another reference on google. I have seen another article saying Aretha Franklin is now the empress rather than the queen, but again, no-one calls miss Franklin by that title in common usage.
There is so much media out there nowadays that all sorts of things may be said of any artist. However, I think it's when people start to refer to that person with a title in common use, especially when recognised at music award, on the artists websites and tours etc, that is when a title is used commonly.
In the spirit of the wiki article, I believe if you added in every title with only a couple of references available, the page would then have to be enormous, and would therefore defeat the spirit of the page.
2. Although Mary has one 9 Grammy awards and countless other awards such as Soul Train awards, my belief is she has never been referred to as The Empress of Soul, and most usually the "Queen of Hip Hop Soul". She has never referred to herself with that title on her website either.
I think the comments above should be all that is needed to convince the editors of this page. However, I am of course happy to discuss further if you wish to.
My apologies for removing the reference, I did not realize how to change it back, but I see how now.
Many thanks...Cole

Empress of Soul
Hello there,
I am the 2nd person to remove your reference to MJB as the Empress of Soul. This is the first time I have edited a wiki page.
You may of course put the reference back in, but please let me state why this has been removed.
Firstly let me state MJB and Gladys are my 2 all time favorite singers of all time!
From what I can see the only reference to this title for MJB was a Billborad article, and I believe they were referring to Ryan Seacrest calling her that on American Idol, which I believe may have been a mistake? Miss Knight has also been a guest on Idol, so I doubt they would want to put the two against each other like that.
Also, the idea of this page on wiki is to use 'known' titles, which I believe this is not.
Mary is referred to as "The Queen of Hip Hop Soul: Miss Mary j Blige"...whereas Gladys is referred to as "The Empress of Soul: Miss Gladys Knight".
Lastly, MJB has enormous respect for artists such as Gladys and Aretha, and believe she would think people using their well known titles as hers as being disrespectful to them.
I hope you will agree with my reasoning and leave the post removed.
My thanks in advance...
If you wish to discuss further please email me...

Its not my reference and it is not appropriate to discuss content like this on user talk pages. Please take your arguments to the article talkpage. If this is your first edit to Wikipedia you may want to find something less controversial to do to give yourself time to get used to the guidelines.--SabreBD (talk) 15:53, 25 January 2011 (UTC)
OK, sorry SabreBD as I am new. Are you saying that I don't have a right to air my opinions until I am an expert in Wiki rules? From some reading, this is not expected of a new editor. And I do not believe your behavior is expected of an experienced editor. Cheers...ColeCole Hayes (talk) 23:12, 27 January 2011 (UTC)

[edit]Please do not attack other editors, as you did at Wikipedia:Sockpuppet_investigations/Comprendo/Archive. Comment on content, not on contributors. Personal attacks damage the community and deter users. Please stay cool and keep this in mind while editing. Thank you. The edit in question is here. Kinu t/c 21:19, 30 January 2011 (UTC)
Are you serious? I am deterring users? I was a new user that was deterred by these guys who:
1. Will not let me edit a page and keep over riding my logical arguments with their hypocrisy or ignore me all together 2. Accused me of sock puppetry after my very first edit 3. Accused me of meat puppetry after being found NOT to be a sock puppet 4. Told me I had no place editing or even arguing my points in discussion without learning all the rules of Wiki 5. Use rules of wiki when it suits them but ignore any rules that I bring up 6. Have and continued to be rude to a new user
And you think I'm the problem?
I haven't bothered with wiki since these guys...
I have asked for a 3rd party review of the article and my changes in question and no-one has responded!
I see the page has been nominated previously for deletion...and I agree...wiki in my brief experience seems to be filled with power hungry idiots who play politics rather than stick to rules and common sense.
Did you view their comments to me and give them the same advice? If so you a legend...if not you should learn to do your research before judging me...Cole Hayes (talk) 16:27, 13 March 2011 (UTC)
