Thomas Howes (actor)

Dear Clarityfiend, would you mind if I recreated a page for Thomas Howes (which you and others voted to delete). I am just watching Downton Abbey again - a major (judged by viewing figures and comments) UK TV series, and Howes has what seems to me a sufficiently prominent role to warrant a page. I have added further refs. to his stage and radio career also, which helps I think. I have a draft here: User:Msrasnw/Thomas Howes (actor). What do you think? I'm sorry, but those additional references don't help at all. They mostly just mention him in passing; the exceptions aren't any better: his CV posted by a talent agency and his IMDb entry. It comes back to his Downton Abbey role (plus his Yorkshire Post interview). I haven't seen the show, but "Second Footman" doesn't sound at all significant. I considered something like that when I started the article, but rejected it because it looked odd to me to have "denaturalized" and "citizen" together; if you're one, you're not the other. • Hi, I've reviewed your further work on this article. Unfortunately currently the article bears an NPOV cleanup tag, and therefore must be declined for DYK as "requiring substantial further work". The phrases in question are ones like "so often handled badly" and "some even manage". "Badly" is inherently a subjective judgement; it either needs to be part of an attributed quote, or removed. (eg "The personal finances of athletes are often handled in a manner that results in...") I've improved the citations, added some material. This has moved me from neutral to Weak Keep, but it's possible I'm starting to get too close to the subject. In any case, the initial AfD posting significantly understates her accomplishments: she's won several national-level U.S. fiddling competitions, has been the sole subject of one RS newspaper article, and also of 5-1/2 minutes of public television documentary (albeit metropolitan/state TV, not national.) Vorkosigan Saga

Hi Clarityfiend,

I noticed you've been cleaning up the Vorkosigan Saga article after the IP posted about its being confusing, and I'd like to help, but I don't want to get in your way. What is your plan for the article?

I've been thinking for a while (just hadn't had the time to get around to it yet) that all(/most of?) the books should be split out into their own articles. It would make it a lot more readable. The article is currently 42 KB, which is big enough that WP:SIZERULE advises considering splitting. And many other series of this size have separate articles for each book.

So I think I'll probably do that over the next couple days, but I wanted to check that this wouldn't mess up whatever you're planning to do. Also, if you have any suggestions on where I could help out on the article, please let me know. Princess Lirin (talk) 02:17, 7 February 2011 (UTC)

Hi, I'd just started copyediting Battle of Ap Bac as per the WP:GOCE when I noticed that you tagged it is "working" (you were too quick for me :) ). I didn't get far and for what it's worth this is what I did:

The Battle of Ap Bac, also known in Vietnam as the American War, was a major battle fought during the early stages of the Vietnam War. The event took place in Dinh Tuong Province (now part of Tien Giang Province), South Vietnam, on January 2, 1963.

==Background==

Fighting between the South Vietnamese Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN) and the Communist National Liberation Front (commonly known as the Viet Cong), began in the late 1950s in the Mekong River region. With the advantage of extensive United States aid, the South Vietnamese military were initially able to inflict heavy casualties on the Viet Cong. However, despite fielding armoured personnel carriers and helicopters, South Vietnamese commanders were usually reluctant to press home their advantage, being averse to absorbing casualties that could be detrimental to their military careers. Throughout 1962, South Vietnamese soldiers of the 7th Infantry Division often found themselves in position to trap and destroy battalion-sized Viet Cong units in battles across the Mekong Delta, but their commanders usually allowed the Viet Cong to retreat rather than risk taking casualties.

I staked my claim first. Race officials don't go to Usain Bolt and say, "you won, but this other competitor thinks he did, so we're going to award him the gold medal."

Once I was notified of an edit conflict, I checked the requests page, then your edits. Since my work was more extensive than yours, I decided to paste mine on top and add back yours (mostly) afterward. That explains why my first edit is several minutes later than yours, and why there were several edits.

Participation GOCE May 2011 backlog elimination drive progress graphs There were 63 signups for the drive; of these, 45 participated. Although we did not award a bonus for articles from the Requests page this drive, we are not experiencing lengthy delays in getting the articles processed. I was looking at the new post at Wizard Oz about the costume and I was checking some of the ref's and came back and it was gone and I was thinking "no way" that had great potential. Copy edit Battle of Romani

Thanks for the copyedit. Its really appreciated.

Regarding the German and Ottoman force I think the foot artillery and trench mortar do constitute the Austrian artillery and I've cut a couple of semicolons to clarify, hopefully. Regarding the 3rd Inf Div of 3 regiments they apparently totalled 16,000 men of whom 11,000 to 11,873 were combatants. I've included this detail because often times in the literature Ottoman units are said to be understrength.

Regarding the casualty figures - I realise these are not consistent - different sources. Also regarding the table it was copied from the source as it stood and I extrapolated from it to add the totals. Not sure what should be done - what do you think? :) --Rskp (talk) 06:53, 5 July 2011 (UTC)

Thanks for having another look at this article. I've moved that citation to try to reflect that part of the table it relates to and added a ref to the info, which had preceded the table, now at the end of the subsection. Regarding the 16,000 men its my understanding that they are part of the 3rd Division. Regarding cutting the (Lowland) and (Lancashire) of the 52nd and 42nd Divisions and 'infantry' in some places - I'm not sure about this.--Rskp (talk) 05:40, 9 July 2011 (UTC)

As for the long division names, it's pretty standard practice to shorten them. See First Battle of El Alamein and 50th (Northumbrian) Infantry Division for example. Hi

The editor who requested the copyedit has been blocked. As a result, the articles that they have requested copyedits on have been examined. The MIT article is already a GA and seems to be in a good state, indeed it seems to be enough shape for the GAR to be dismissed.

It also looks as if you have not started the copyedit, possibly as you have two articles listed as "working". As a result I have deleted the copyedit request. If you have been copyediting offline though, feel free to continue.

Hey there. When I edit character articles, I generally use a lot of long quotes from the actors but I only use the block format when it's humungous. For example, I used a lot of heavy quotes on Quinn Fabray, Kurt Hummel, and Rachel Berry. It's just not the typical format I use personally, but I'm not sure if that goes against WP:MOS. Hello,

As the OP requesting 7-word summaries of Shakespeare, I was extremely impressed by your summarizing skills. You must be among the top summarizers I've ever seen in action. Now, I have a request:

could you summarize the subjects/areas of your expertise (I mean summarize the fields themselves), each with a heroic couplet; i.e. summarize each subject in 2 lines, with one subject following another? So, you would have a heroic couplet for history, one for literature, one for biology, etc.

I was very disappointed, but another person I made this request to was unable to get back to me.  :( I realize this is a daunting task. Don't feel judged, but I would feel so appreciative if you would give it an honest go... :)

I think 'association' would be a better word than 'stay' as the latter narrows down the scope. Also the facts you removed from the background section would be essential, I feel, as not many would be aware of the inconsistencies with regard to their documentation. In fact I had to bring that section to the top as suggested in the peer review as a reviewer felt that many readers wouldn't know what Porajmos is. The development section follows this, starting with the difficulties he faced in putting together the less available information. Also, later in the casting section, there is a mention of Gatlif visiting Transylvania to find Romani actors. It would look disconnected without the facts about Transylvania in the background section, driving the reader to do external research. These are just what I feel. I have to disagree. This isn't an article about the Porajmos, and I believe there is just enough left for the reader to understand the film's context. Note that the last sentence in the Background subsection refers to the persecution in "Nazi-occupied countries". Clarification

I'm not sure the right meaning was kept here. Local constructors lobbied to have the damaged monuments demolished despite being recoverable in order to have a chance to buy some prestigious lots in city center, to build new edifices but ultimately damaging the community. Thanks to all who copy edited articles and helped us reduce the backlogs in both the total articles and requests. We offered a bonus for copy edits from the Requests page, and have been somewhat successful in reducing that backlog, as a record 89 new requests were received in the month of July. Progress report During the month of July we reduced the backlog by 338 articles, or by about 8.5%. We did not reach our goal of a 10% reduction, but we came close, and did very well considering the small size of the group participating. Since our Backlog elimination drives began in May 2010, we have reduced the backlog by 4,708 articles. End-of-drive results can be found here. I see no basis for your opinion that Garbo was not "an accomplished actress." She was indeed an accomplished actress, as any Garbo expert will tell you. Many historians have argued that she was in her greatest roles (for example in Camille and Anna Karenina, brilliant. She won 4 Academy Award nominations and two New York Film Critics awards for best actress. She also won other awards and nominations. This is more than sufficient evidence for characterizing her as as an accomplished artist. All of these awards and nominations are listed in the filmography. She transformed acting technique in silent pictures and developed her acting style using a rigorous technique. I don't think you can you cite many sources who have determined that she was not an accomplish actress. Therefore, I think your assertion is incorrect. I was taught to avoid starting sentences with "but". But that's just me. Also, I suspect that part of your half a dozen remark pertains to my replacing "Garbo" with "her" in places; I dislike using her stage name in her early life before she actually used it, but can't come up with a better solution just yet. Hi CF, I was taught by my brother, a journalist, to use "but" unless "however" is absolutely necessary! Look through a newspaper and you'll see the word however rarely. I think "but" is usually more powerful. It also keeps the momentum going forward, inother words, for pacing, and "however" usually changes the thought process and slows it down. No, no the half dozen remark referred to something I can't remember. But Good to replace Garbo with "her," etc. As for final question, I think the Garbo before name change keeps the entire piece in present tense, so better. FWIF. Hi, Look I'm sorry about the comma drought but its what I was taught - no I shouldn't blame my teachers - but there you are. Also I really thought that putting a comma before 'and' was superfluous. 'Dictionary' provides the following - "Barbara Child claims that in American English there is a trend toward a decreased use of the comma (Child, 1992, p. 398). This is reinforced by an article by Robert J. Samuelson in 23:2007 Newsweek article "The Sad Fate of the Comma." Lynne Truss says that this is equally true in the UK, where it has been a slow, steady trend for at least a century." (Truss, 2004, p. 97–98) I'm just trying to be trendy!! :) :)

Hello there! I see from the contributors list on Kate Hepburn's article that you have edited it a fair bit, so I'm guessing you have some interest in her. American historians, however, call him "Honório".[6][7] Since this is the Wikipedia in English, I opted to use the name he is mostly known in English written sources. Every single moment that the words "Liberal" or "Moderate" or "Conservative" appear in the article they appear with the meaning of Party filiation, not of ideology. This is just as "the Republican Ronald Reagan" or "the Democrat Bill Clinton" (none of them are being called by ideology, such as Republicanism or Democracy, but by their party filiations, such as the Republican Party and Democratic Party). Thus, shouldn't "Liberal", "Moderate", "Courtier", "Saquarema", "Conservative", etc... be spelled with a higher case? Well, according to the MoS we should write "Liberal" to describe a member of the Liberal Party and "liberal" someone who is adept of the Liberalism. But this should only occur when the name of a Party could be misunderstood with an ideology (like a Democract U.S. Senator against a democract activist). Since there is no possibility that "saquarema" could ever be misunderstood (it isn't a Portuguese word, but an Indian word), there is no reason to capitalize. Hi, just to say, that there is a strong practice of not starting a sentence with 'however'. Strunk and White, the definitive style guide used by publishers internationally since 1918 states “Avoid starting a sentence with however when the meaning is ‘nevertheless’”. (Strunk and White (2005) The Elements of Style p73.) It's echoed in any number of books on English usage (A grammar book, Edward Good, P 160, Writing with style Jacobi, p107). I know there are other viewpoints but to say 'no such ban exists' is to overlook these stylists. The ban very much exists in some quarters. Span (talk) 13:02, 10 October 2011 (UTC)

You raised an interesting point here. Me and the other user detailed the numerous role details since the last time the article failed its FA nomination because it had some refs' inconsistency issues and was not comprehensive enough. Some roles that ain't that relevant are explained in the article. We were thinking of trimming details but we'll be careful since we don't want to repeat the last nomination's mistakes. After looking it over again, it's not quite as bad as I thought. I'd get rid of "set in the late 1950s, in which she played the part of Eleanor, one of three daughters of the town millionaire, Lloyd Abbott" since it isn't referenced in Ron Howard's comments; the one sentence plot description of The House of Sand and Fog; and "a mentally unstable woman who has a 20-year affair with the local sheriff, whose daughter then starts a relationship with Virginia's son". I'm glad someone is doing such a good job verifying the content, but I think you're taking this a bit too literally. Check out MOS:FILM#Cast to see how we write cast sections or refer to any FA-Class film article for guidance. Wikipedia has its own house style, and we will often modify or change the case of a word to fit that house style, especially when we are dealing with a silent film from 1928. This particular issue has been discussed ad nauseum and has had a record number of comments devoted to it.[9][10][11] There's a strong consensus in those discussions and on the talk page to keep the link as it is. The dispute originated with Jack and several editors, including Slatersteven and ScottyBerg. My attention and involvement began much later, when their dispute finally reached ANI, at which point I offered my opinion there and began following it more closely. I wish it was that easy! For example, some editors refer to it as an urban legend and others as a meme. Personally, I don't think it is even notable to include per WP:ONEWAY. "George Clarke's time travel urban legend" is a compromise. Your proposal to add "A time travel urban legend involving a clip from this film" is reasonable now that I understand your intent. The MOS has little bearing on the format. If there were more background info, then "well-written prose" could be added, but there isn't in this case. I dithered a bit on the TRAMP, but left it in all-caps because Chaplin was credited last, and I figured this was his way of showing who had top billing. You'll notice I didn't revert those changes, as I think one can make a good argument for keeping them. However, considering the stylized format of film credits in 1928, I think one can also make a good argument for formatting them in Wikipedia house style, which is why I left them in the previous format. Vicious (Rapper from Lake Charles, LA)

I had added Vicious to the list of people with the name Vicious. He is a rapper out of Lake Charles, LA. He is not as active as he once was, but still has significant noteriety. I do not appreciate you deleting him from the list. I have no problem with you adding the other Rapper named Vicious, but you should not have deleted Vicious from Lake Charles just because you have never heard of him. His songs are readily available on the internet and in music stores. I am not a top contributor to wikipedia, as you are, so I do not have the experience to create a whole page for Vicious from Lake Charles. I only added his name to the list, because I was interested in reading about him and saw that there was no article. Adding his name was the first step and I was hoping someone else would come along and create the page. You added a nice page on the rapper Vicious from Jamaica, but should not have deleted the other Rapper Vicious from the list of names. Please explain to me why this was done. Adam And Evelyne (film)

All references to Evelyne are not correct. This is plainly evident by the movie poster that is shown on the wiki page which shows the correct title as being "Adam And Evalyn". My attempt to correct the errors were feeble in that I never tried it before.

I haven't Wikilinked the title yet because I proposed a deletion. I couldn't find significant coverages and sources not affiliated with this topic to meet general notability guidelines for this film. It cannot be notable just as a film starring two major stars and Rex Harrison's first film.
