Archiving

Thanks for archiving the "Max 207" reference. Unfortunately the archive doesn't seem to work properly, for me anyway. The Wayback Machine is still not 100% operational. I just tried to archive the "Max 206" reference from Wuhan and that didn't work properly either. I was using Ghost Archive for a while but it is a bit "iffy" sometimes, so I've just kept a record of all the citations either "ghosted" or not archived atall, and intend to go back through them all once the Wayback Machine is working properly again. Yeah no worries. I saw that you were the one who used to archive all the references and then I noticed that they stopped being archived, so I went to the Wayback Machine myself and saw what the problem was. Just had another look today and it seems to be working again for me. It shouldn't be a huge issue, the WST articles should stay up at least for the rest of the season, if not longer now that they've revamped the whole website, I doubt they're gonna do another major rehaul anytime soon. But yeah, it's good to get those archived if possible because WST as a whole can't be relied upon to keep the urls live. KDayne (talk) 20:21, 5 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@KDayne: I have been going through and updating archives, and the Wayback Machine "Save Page Now" is still not working reliably. It keeps telling me that "there was a delay in registering", but 24 hours later it's still not done. You seem to be having the same problem, since this archive which you did yesterday doesn't work either. I'm running out of patience. Any ideas?

I just tried a different approach, which was only partially successful. I copied five refs into my sandbox, deleted the non-working archives from them, and then ran the "Fix dead links" IABot on the page. It took a long while to complete, and was successful for only one of the five. This is becoming really frustrating. Alan (talk) 10:21, 15 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Well yeah it's frustrating but I tend not to be too harsh on the Wayback Machine people, they're doing good, important work and mostly as a labour of love. I also read that they recently had some server issues because of cyber attacks so that whole incident might still have some repercussions.

But I think I found out that if you go to save a page, and when accessing the link, it gives you the error message, I think that it is actually archived but it will take some time until the links work properly. When archiving a few of the CoC refs, I noticed that the links it gave me still had the date when I initially tried archiving them (14 November) and now they work. While trying newer links that I hadn't tried archiving before, currently don't work. But maybe they will as well in a few days. KDayne (talk) 14:24, 18 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@KDayne: I got the following reply from the Internet Archive:

"Hi Alan, Delays in the creation of indexes happen. Millions of URls/day are archived via the Save Page Now service. We rather offer the service with those (periodic) delays than not. The indexes DO build and the archives ARE created. Please don't hesitate to reach out to us at anytime, about anything, going forward. Mark Graham, Director, the Wayback Machine at the Internet Archive"

This message was sent to me on the 19th but I only just got it as I was in hospital for a couple of days.

@KDayne: I have been "plugging away" at archiving, in between watching some of the UK Championship matches, and keeping the century breaks up‑to‑date, which is my main "raison d'etre". Starting from the last World Championship, I have been trying to replace the citations which were "ghosted" and are a bit "iffy", with ones from the Internet Archive which is now back to "normal". The main problem here is Eurosport because you can't use the "Save Page Now" function on Eurosport pages. You just get the "geoblocking" page. I had this converation last year, with AmethystZhou who seems to have disappeared of late. Anyway, I have been fairly successful so far, and there are only (to date) two citations still "ghosted" in the World Championship, and two in the Saudi Arabia Masters. Amir Sarkhosh

@KDayne: Note that you have redlinked Amir Sarkhosh in various articles, and so I have followed suit in the List of snooker players. He is currently the only tour player without an article, and so I'm assuming you are about to create a page for him. Alan (talk) 10:10, 18 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah it's been on my bucket list for a while now. He has a page in the German wikipedia and I do speak German so I wanted to see what useful references they have and build him a page using those. I'm not saying it's imminent though that I create the page, but I will at some point and even if I didn't do it, the red link is only right based on Wikipedia's guidelines and it might even encourage someone else to create the page. As you said, he's the only tour player without one so he should have one. Amateurs whose future tour status is uncertain don't necessarily need a red link at this point. A word of advice. If you do create a page for him, don't be tempted to put it in draftspace. If you do that it will stay there forever. Somebody created a draft page for Victor Sarkis last year, and the move to mainspace was rejected a number of times. Just make sure you have enough proper citations and go straight to mainspace. Ok thanks. I'll have to wait for a reply from Lee Vilenski (talk · contribs) first if he can unblock creation of the page... apparently there were some issues a few years back where someone repeatedly tried to create the page until Lee stepped in and administrator-blocked the creation of it. You can actually tell someone out there really pushed for the creation of this article, they currently have an article on 29 Wikipedias [5], which was true before he was a professional. For reference, that's more than current World Champion Kyren Wilson (28).

@KDayne and Lee Vilenski: I have used Google translate and have knocked up a stub. Have a look in my sandbox. It only has seven citations, after I removed all the CueTracker ones (the German Wiki doesn't seem to have a problem with using CueTracker). I think it's a good enough start.
