LOL, not exactly. I just got a bit bogged down in the ship articles after doing the "Unique United States Navy transports" category, which included a whole pile of nightmarish ship articles like this. So I thought I'd give the ship articles a rest for a while.
Since then, I just happened to notice in my travels that there was no article on William G. James and wrote a quick article on him. But then I started to realize what a neglected area Australian composers and musicians are! Even the existing articles are mostly stubs or else pretty untidy. So I've done a couple of articles on composers I'm familiar with, and now I'll probably do at least a few more. I guess this is what they mean by "systemic bias" - there are obviously not too many wikipedians interested in classical music :) Gatoclass (talk) 10:19, 5 June 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks! That could prove very handy. In fact, it might have already. The Grove wouldn't have an entry on Dulcie Holland would it? I was unable to find her birth date from my available sources. Gatoclass (talk) 10:50, 5 June 2008 (UTC)
- I guess the Grove isn't quite as comprehensive as it purports to be! Never mind, I'm sure it will come in handy at some stage. Thanks for taking the trouble :) Gatoclass (talk) 07:33, 6 June 2008 (UTC)

Since you deleted this category as being empty, could you please get rid of Category:Albums produced by James Stroud and Category:Albums produced by Robert Ellis Orrall as well? Those CFDs have both been open more than 7 days and the categories are empty. Ten Pound Hammer and his otters • (Broken clamshells•Otter chirps) 11:09, 5 June 2008 (UTC)
- These 3 are empty because TenPoundHammer emptied them (using Hotcat, so no explanatory edit summaries) on 4 June while the cfds were ongoing. -- roundhouse0 (talk) 11:17, 5 June 2008 (UTC)
- That was per the suggestion of another editor on IRC. He suggested that since the categories were very unlikely to survive AfD that I might as well clear them out and save a step for an admin. Note also that neither Kyle Lehning nor James Stroud have pages. Ten Pound Hammer and his otters • (Broken clamshells•Otter chirps) 13:39, 5 June 2008 (UTC)
Deleted per consensus at each of those discussions. However, pre-emptive emptying of categories is not necessary and can in some circumstances be seen as highly inappropriate. Edit summaries are rarely an optional extra on Wikipedia anyway. BencherliteTalk 21:48, 5 June 2008 (UTC)
- Sorry about the lack of edit summaries; I did use HotCat after all. The pre-emptive emptying was per suggestion of another editor, like I said. I'll be more careful about that. Ten Pound Hammer and his otters • (Broken clamshells•Otter chirps) 18:59, 6 June 2008 (UTC)
CFD suggestion
I see that you recently closed the CFD on Wikipedia:Categories_for_discussion/Log/2008_May_16#African-American_categories and deleted a bunch of categories pursuant to consensus. However, you did not check the destination categories. At least three of these destinations already existed -- Category:African American actors, Category:African American history, and Category:African American singers, but they contained {{category redirect}} templates pointing them to the same title with a hyphen. You didn't remove these now-invalid redirects, so when RussBot did its regular weekly run today, it duly started emptying out these categories and moving all the contents back to the old, deleted titles. My suggestion is that, when deleting a category as part of a rename, you check the rename destination and make sure that it has the appropriate content. --Russ (talk) 10:15, 7 June 2008 (UTC)
defunct categories
Hi, thanks for deleting Cat:American Cajun fiddlers. There are a couple other categories I created and have now emptied (I was making genre-by-nationality categories, but found that given the articles currently available it really isn't necessary. I should have looked through them first, clearly- it's a bit embarrassing)... I was going to wait around a couple days and then go through the deletion board, but maybe you can just delete them? They are

- Category:American blues fiddlers
- Category:American Creole fiddlers
- Category:German Cajun fiddlers

There are a lot of fiddler stubs out there, so I was looking at the stubs sections of the Project - if you're looking for a not-exactly-the-same-as-categorizing-musicians project check out the alarming thing I found: Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Musicians/Stubs#Extant stub categories not in the list. — eitch 16:01, 7 June 2008 (UTC)

Bencherlite Personal Favoritism
Having posted on someone prominent in the history of Tacoma and Washington State with info under the US Public Domain I am annoyed at seeing it removed. Out of coriosity I looked at your contribution list and found that you have posted profiles on people who were even more obscure. It could be they have some local recognition in England or Wales and have more local than global prominence but I think them even more obscure in Britain than the person that I posted is in the United States. —Preceding unsigned comment added by RichardBond (talk • contribs) 17:26, 13 June 2008
I read your reply and you did not have an excuse for the choice of your contributions as the British Biographical Encyclopedias you mentioned are both tomes yet omits even famous Washintonians. It just shows your bias in favor of your fellow Britons. I respect your subjectivity those you have created articles on are important to you and people went to your school or who live in your part of Britain. —Preceding unsigned comment added by RichardBond (talk • contribs) 20:03, 13 June 2008 (UTC)
Possible return of Gozitancrabz
Hello Bencherlite, I thought I would drop you a note to say that there is a possibility that the sockpuppet Gozitancrabz has made a return. I made a sockpuppet report against Fonez4mii here. Gozitancrabz and Fonez4mii have all the hallmarks of being the same user. They both argue for the same thing in exactly the same manner, aggressively accusing anyone who disagrees with them of POV and trolling. Gozitancrabz argued his case on the Wales talk page while Fonez4mii argues the same case on the Scotland and UK talk page. If you have the time to have a look it would be much appreciated. Thanks. It should be obvious why I changed the name though: "Category:European Court of Human Rights cases involving the United Kingdom" is a pain in the arse to type out. Is this what you had put in to begin with? I was planning on shortening the other ones too.
Also, it's inaccurate. I'm putting cases under those categories that come from the old Commission. You don't want to have the title "Category:European Court (or Commission) of Human Rights cases involving the United Kingdom" do you? That would be even more or a pain in the arse, an even greater waste of time, and even stupider than debating about this! :) Wikidea 10:34, 23 June 2008 (UTC)

Category deletion
I am not sure how you came to the conclusion to delete. At most there was concensus to rename but not to delete. Now that the deletion is running through the company pages, to effect a rename is going to be even more difficult. I would like to try to get a little more of an explanation how you came to the conclusion to delete based on the discussion on that page. To go back now and re categorize those companies is going to be a major effort -- a very unfortunate decision. |► ϋ r b a n я e n e w a l ◄| (talk) 01:58, 24 June 2008 (UTC)
- I am going try to address the fundamental issue with a different named category. This is a very distinct category - an entire class of companies that are not just "privately held" but actually controlled by private equity firms. This is not an argument of other categories get away with it so I want to also, it is an argument that this is very analogous to valuable existing categories that describe the ownership of a company. What I think Vegaswikian failed to recognize was that if you had looked at the vast majority of the articles, there is referenced discussion of their ownership as it represents a major event for the company and not just some natural state through which most companies progress. For many of these companies, you could easily strip away half the categories without losing out any characteristics that actually define the company - whereas ownership by private equity often is a defining characteristic of the history and operation of the business. Aside from Vegaswikian who nominated and has no familiarity with the industry, I don't think most of the editors were really in favor of deletion but rather separation / renaming. Either way, it would have been helpful to consult as I am going to have to recategorize this by hand and there are much better uses of time.|► ϋ r b a n я e n e w a l ◄| (talk) 03:20, 24 June 2008 (UTC)

Rough Consensus??
You recently closed the discussion around proposed renaming of Categories:Australians by ethnicity or national descent here .. concluding "The result of the discussion was: rename all"?
On my count the discussion was 6 for renaming, 2 against. This represented a 25% vote against renaming (including my own 'strong opposition' for the reasons given). It is hard to see how such a vote constitutes as Wikipedia:Consensus? Perhaps you can point me in the right direction to the relevant guideline of policy .. and/or outline what minimum percentage of opposition must be expressed before a nomination is judged to have failed to obtain consensus? ? Bruceanthro (talk) 13:34, 28 June 2008 (UTC)
- Thank you for explaining and pointing me in the right direction:
- I now see your decision was just one in a series of such decisions being systematically (?) made to rename x-booians to booians of x descent/; and
- the required consensus is not just a matter of counting numbers of votes (though a real consensus is desirable), but also 'weigh' votes by their strength of arguement etc (ie bad faith, illogical, anti-policy etc votes 'weigh' next to nought .. and good arguement 'weigh' above a single vote)??
- Please, I had a quick look at Wikipedia:WikiProject Ethnic groups to see if there was any discussion or policy agreement for such a noticeable and systematic series of nominations to rename x-booians to booians of x descent .. but could not find any such discussion of such a significant and potentially controversial series of renaming? Perhaps that project needs to be generally alerted to what is being done, a quick check made to see if it is generally agreeable etc.
- Next, I was wondering, when you were deciding to rename series of x-Australians categories to Australians of x-descent categories;
- if you were aware of and/or had regard to the clear ambivalence and differing opinions of Australian editors expressed [[(see here)
- if the pre-existing x-Australian categories are now to be kept of delted ... noting my own concern/arguement that Australia does allow dual citizenship and there will be notable Australians (eg Rupert Murdoch) with dual citzenship who do not fall within the renamed Australians of x descent categories!? Category:User:Willscrlt
Please read my response on the CFD and also look at commons:Category:User:Willscrlt as a rough idea of how I plan(ed) to extend the category here. Obviously the picture/media focus of Commons would not carry over here. Instead, I would be using it for keeping track of templates and other things that don't always fit nicely into the All Pages:Userspace search tool (which I actually already have included in my sidebar). If there's another way of doing it, that's great. If not, the policy should be amended. I certainly do see how it could grow out of hand, but it could also be a very useful tool. Like handguns, it could be used for good or bad. I'm probably tilting windmills to even think about getting a policy like that changed, and maybe there's a tool out there that makes the categories unnecessary here. I haven't found it yet. Thanks for reading. --Willscrlt (Talk) 17:10, 1 July 2008 (UTC)

Question regarding deleted category
The recent CFD of the Polish-Americans category to Americans of Polish descent raises a question: what category is to be used for naturalized immigrants from Poland? The article Beata Pozniak is one that has been changed. She's a Polish actress who moved to the US in the 1990s and got her citizenship later. So it's incorrect to list her of being of Polish descent. She isn't of descent, she is Polish, just a naturalized citizen. Is there a more accurate category to be used here? Otherwise I'll need to remove the category from the article as misleading per WP:BLP. 23skidoo (talk) 03:27, 13 July 2008 (UTC)

Pole becoming naturalised citizen of other country
This is exactly the category of person that I m not sure about. Mosts Poles are by default also a person of Polish descent as their parents are usually Polish, etc., but obviously there can be someone who is first generation Polish who becomes first generation American. My opinion is that Category:Immigrants should be gotten rid of and its contents merged into Category:Expatriates for immigrants who don t become citizens and Category:People with acquired citizenship, of which a main subcategory is Category:Naturalized citizens by nation. It usually is unknown whether someone is an immigrant and not a non immigrant expat, but is it quite commonly known whether someone has gained a second or replaced a first citizenship.
To be more specific about your query, if Category:Polish-Americans is to be merged into Category:Americans of Polish descent, then there should be a Category:Polish naturalized citizens of the United States started and used as a subcategory of and link between Category:Americans of Polish descent and Category:Naturalized citizens of the United States. The whole difficulty is that many Americans use 'Polish American' as a misnomer of sorts to mean an American of any amount of Polish ancestry, and not a Pole who has become an American citizen (which, from looking at the term, would appear to make more sense). This area of categorization, of ethnicity and its relation with citizenship, is still rather undeveloped on wikip Mayumashu (talk) 21:30, 13 July 2008 (UTC)
- Oh, it was merged, which is what you either said or implied - apologies (I was sure the vote was leaning to a keep, do not rename). At any rate, regards Mayumashu (talk) 21:38, 13 July 2008 (UTC)
- A bit of an afterthought - I wonder if someone who is first gen. Polish and becomes a naturalized American is still an American of Polish descent? I don t have a problem personally with interpreting it as such but probably to be dissuaded from doing so rather easily, but maybe not. Mayumashu (talk) 21:43, 13 July 2008 (UTC)

Full stops
Hey Bencherlite. Hmm, full stops, well... somewhere in the MOS it states that fragments of sentences don't take full stops. I'm non-plussed by most of it within the context of notes in a list - e.g. if you have two fragments, do you have a full stop after the first fragment and then nothing after the second? Looks a little odd. Anyway, my note was just to be consistent, either way. So, if someone is strongly objecting to you having full stops then remove them. Sorry if I've caused any confusion! Invitation to Wikipedia meetup in London
Date: 13:00 onwards, Sunday 10 August 2008
Venue: Penderel's Oak pub, Holborn WC1 map
More information: Wikipedia:Meetup/London 12
Hello,
I noticed that you have listed yourself as a Wikipedian in London, so I thought you might like to come to one of our monthly social meetups. The next one is going to be on Sunday 10 August, which might well be rather short notice, but if you can't come this time, we try to have one every second Sunday of the month.
If you haven't been before, these meetups are mainly casual social events for Wikipedia enthusiasts in which we chat about Wikipedia and any other topics we fancy. It's a great way to meet some very keen Wikipedians, but we'd also love for you to come along if you're interested in finding out more about Wikipedia, other Wikimedia projects, or other collaborative wiki projects too.
The location is a pub that is quite quiet and family friendly on a Sunday lunchtime, so hopefully younger Wikipedians will also feel welcome and safe. Alcohol consumption is certainly not required!
Although the meetups are popular, many UK-based editors still don't know about them. It would be great to welcome some fresh faces, so I hope you can come along.
Yours,
James F. (talk) 09:27, 3 August 2008 (UTC)

Notable cellist
why was the British cellist Michael kevin Jones deleted from the Wikipedia listings ? I tried to post an article about him at the same time as listing him on the notable cellists page and perhaps this should have been done first ? In any case he is indeed a 'notable' cellist and I request that the deletion be reconsidered . American record guide recently praised his magnificent tone and expansive phrasing and named him an irresistible figure and his recording of the Bach suites for the Metropolitan Museum of Art using a rare Stradivarius cello from 1667 have also recieved considerable praise. He is the cellist in the Jones Maruri cello guitar duo which is known throughout the world as can be verified by any internet search.

reply..It was deleted because it was a copyright infringement of this page. Try writing it again without copying sources verbatim. Regards, BencherliteTalk 22:10, 19 August 2008 (UTC)
I am very upset after having followed your advise . I wrote the article again on British cellist Michael Kevin Jones and the Jones Maruri duo using only genuine references and infomation and everything was removed without warning today . At least on the last attempt I was given 5 days to expand the article ! .. how can this lack of consequence and critearia be possible in Wikipedia ? please help me to restore these artists to your listings. re: Boat club article
Looks pretty good, I've just added a couple to see also.
Perhaps the opening paragraph is a little too long? Also, the history seems to stop around 2002-04, perhaps a line or two on the last few years? I'm being fussy though, that's all I can pick up. Grunners (talk) 17:47, 24 August 2008 (UTC)

A situation I don't know how to handle
Hello, I was referred to you by another editor. I seem to be in the middle of some odd edit war between User:KM*hearts*MC and an anon IP user. I would give you the IP address but it changes with every edit they make yet it is registered to the same company, Telekom Malaysia Berhad, which leads me to believe it is the same person on some sort of public terminal (library, school, etc.) or they are using proxies. The IP user seems to be upset b/c their edit was reverted by User:KM*hearts*MC several times (as well as other editors) and he/she will call the editor "dumb" or "stubborn" in his/her edit summaries. However, I agreed with KM's edit and I stated in my summary that if your edits are being constantly reverted then it should give you a clue that something is wrong. Well, this user has now taken the time to revert every edit I've made in the past two days (without an edit summary) and I can only believe that he/she is reverting KM's edits as well. I am not sure if this is grounds for blocking but although it is quite annoying, I feel this user will continue this act of "revenge". Any thoughts?. Oxford Wikimania 2010 and Wikimedia UK v2.0 Notice
Hi,
As a regularly contributing UK Wikipedian, we were wondering if you wanted to contribute to the Oxford bid to host the 2010 Wikimania conference. Please see here for details of how to get involved, we need all the help we can get if we are to put in a compelling bid.
We are also in the process of forming a new UK Wikimedia chapter to replace the soon to be folded old one. If you are interested in helping shape our plans, showing your support or becoming a future member or board member, please head over to the Wikimedia UK v2.0 page and let us know. We plan on holding an election in the next month to find the initial board, who will oversee the process of founding the company and accepting membership applications. They will then call an AGM to formally elect a new board who after obtaining charitable status will start the fund raising, promotion and active support for the UK Wikimedian community for which the chapter is being founded.
You may also wish to attend the next London meet-up at which both of these issues will be discussed. If you can't attend this meetup, you may want to watch Wikipedia:Meetup, for updates on future meets.
We look forward to hearing from you soon, and we send our apologies for this automated intrusion onto your talk page!

Thanks
Hello! I just wanted to pass along my thanks for your support in my RfA from earlier this week. I hope I did not disappoint you. I am going on Wikibreak and I will let you know when or if I am back on the site -- I am trying to take time away to clear my thoughts and refocus on this and other priorities. Be well. Spammy DYK update/housekeeping-type notice
HI (sorry 'bout the spammy note), DYK updates have been a bit slow and there's a bit of a shortage of admins actively involved. We are asking folks who listed themselves on Wikipedia:Did you know/Admins to update details on this page - User:Olaf Davis/DYKadmins, so we can grade everyone's involvement (and who, knows, someone may want to get involved more :) ). Cheers, Casliber (talk · contribs) 03:14, 8 September 2008 (UTC)
JCBC GA(y)
...couldn't resist... Um, yeah, I'm sorry I didn't get a chance to look at it before you nominated it. I've somehow become embroiled in a plethora of little things which, when added together, becomes a big fat pain in the rump steak. So, I'll go look immediately. If I re-familiarise myself with GA criteria (I used to hang out there for a while instead of FLC) then I'll see if I can nick it and rate it for you. The Rambling Man (talk) 16:14, 12 September 2008 (UTC)
- You have comments. Nice job though, enjoyed it. The Rambling Man (talk) 19:37, 12 September 2008 (UTC)
- Nice work. It's just been promoted to GA. Let me know if you do anything similar and need a copyedit/review/whatever.. The Rambling Man (talk) 17:12, 14 September 2008 (UTC)

Hi, Bencherlite. Just a line to say I left a note for you regarding the above at Welsh wikipedians' notice board a week or two back and wondered if you'd seen it. Cofion, Enaidmawr (talk) 18:51, 15 September 2008 (UTC)
WP:WALES
My name is on Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Contacts as a contact for WP:WALES. I am very sporadic on WP at the moment and would feel someone else who is currently more involved should be the contact. What do you think? Agathoclea (talk) 09:12, 22 September 2008 (UTC)
Adoption and General Advice
It's in a way ironic that you asked me a question and now you're an admin. I would like to ask if you would adopt me, as that would be a huge help to me with my editing. I often feel confused, and would like some assistance. If not, can you give me any general help? RedSkunktalk 01:31, 24 September 2008 (UTC)
- I have two major problems. I find it difficult to find articles where I can contribute. I also have trouble trying to cite resources; the guide just doesn't click for me. RedSkunktalk 14:08, 24 September 2008 (UTC)
Thank you, Bencherlite
Thank you for supporting my RfA nomination, Bencherlite. I appreciate the confidence. Cbl62 (talk) 06:06, 24 September 2008 (UTC)
CFDW listing format
Hi, I'm sending this message to past users of WP:CFDW. Now that I've rewritten Cydebot in Python, the door is open to make all sorts of changes to the listing format. Join the discussion here. I'd love to hear some comments from the most frequent users of CFDW on how best to improve it for humans. --Cyde Weys 03:42, 26 September 2008 (UTC)
AAU reminder notice
Hey there Bencherlite! This is a friendly reminder to update your status at Wikipedia:Adopt-a-User/Adoptee's Area/Adopters whenever it is appropriate in order to provide new users with the most up-to-date information on available adopters. Also please note that we will be removing adopters who have not edited in 60 days. If you become active again (and we hope you do!) please feel free to re-add yourself. Cheers! |

Thanks for the fix. You'd think that someone who works with categories as much as I do wouldn't make that mistake... --Kbdank71 17:38, 8 October 2008 (UTC)

Hi Bencherlite, could I ask for your help with adding categories to this new article? BTW he is an alum of Jesus College, Oxford. Cheers. ∞☼Geaugagrrl(T)/(C) 05:01, 14 October 2008 (UTC)
