Comment/question:I got an arxiv date error message. According to the message that was auto-appended to the citation (before I removed the date I added so I didn't get spammed again), this is some problem with a CS1 module. Not my problem is it?? Kindly cease and desist with the BOT spam - I filled in the provided form with the proper date and I don't need BOT messages about system problems. Thanks for adding me to your BOT BLACKLIST.
Twang (talk) 16:58, 16 January 2015 (UTC)
- @Twang: Firstly, this is not at all ReferenceBot's fault. The bot correctly notified you that your edit caused an error. And while there are some current issues with the change in format for 2015 arXiv IDs, that wasn't the issue here - you caused a genuine error that was fixed by Stamptrader; you used the "archiveurl" parameter which, as the name implies, should be a URL (such as a Wayback Machine link, meant for archived copies of web pages) to give the arXiv identifier. Secondly, the bot notifies editors only once about an edit; removing the arXiv ID did not save you any "spam". Thirdly, if you prefer not to be notified of the errors you cause you can use the {{nobots}} template to prevent ReferenceBot from editing your talk page; there's no central blacklist. Comment/question: The CS1 module error (see User_talk:A930913/BracketBotArchives/_13#ReferenceBot_.E2.80.93_65.94.40.137). If this is a commonly alerted error generated by CS1 that ReferenceBot is placing in many user talk pages, it is not helping editors, and may be discouraging them, since there is nothing wrong with this format of arXiv link. Is there a way to discontinue generating missives for all users when the error is generated by the new arXiv format? And is there a timeline to fixing the CS1 module?
65.94.40.137 (talk) 05:16, 19 January 2015 (UTC)
- I would assume that getting the bot to ignore this specific error would be a rather difficult fix for a temporary problem. I would also assume that the number of users who are notified for an error that shouldn't be one is rather small - 2015 isn't that old, and there aren't that many brand-new arXiv papers to be cited. Regarding the timeline you have already asked in a better place than here. Huon (talk) 21:34, 19 January 2015 (UTC)

Just want to you know that I'm new to how the page works, I'm still learning. While, I understand and except that you have removed what I wrote in brackets as well as the stuff that seemed surplus to needs on that page. Some of those questions have ben answered. I asked on the 2000AD Online from where in the entire Slaine Saga can I find Melga. Aside from that I pretty much know Pre-Horn-God Slaine back to front.
I'm wondering why somebody, probably not you... insists that Morgoth's Daughter (I'll been damned if I can remember the correct spelling of her name!) was scarred or killed by a Cythron Laser Sword, Gun, or Cannon. If you or that other person/people re-read "Time-Killer/Tomb of Terror" again. She is getting a facial via the spittle of a Giant-Time-Worm./ Slaine shielded her from being hit directly in the face, but not entirely and she was thus partially scarred with old-age and then later swallowed by the great purple dragon Nidhugg. Unless people are really offended by the money-shot reference, I don't why this information has been miss entered.
Please explain?????
- There's currently no reliable source for the cause of Tlachtga's disfigurement, and reliable third-party sources are in very short supply in the entire article. Instead we're given "references" like Strabo, who I seriously doubt has anything to say about a 21st-century comic strip. The "laser beam" has been removed again, but whether it's breath, spittle or something else entirely that ages her - who knows? Not the given reference, that's for sure. Personally I'd say pretty much the entire article should be rewritten from scratch. Huon (talk) 00:55, 28 January 2015 (UTC)

- Several issues. Firstly, this talk page belongs to the operator of BracketBot, not to Bgwhite. I'll notify him that something of interest may be discussed here, but technically this is the wrong place. Secondly, Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, not a library catalogue. I don't see what the availability of genealogical data tells our readers about those villages. I'd strongly advise you to seek wider community input on whether adding such information on the availability of genalogical data is considered beneficial; personally, as I said abouve, I don't think so. This is not about some easily-fixed editing problems, but about the usefulness of your entire project. - @Peter Dzubay: See WP:PRIMARY. Even if we were to agree that those sources are reliable ("It's true, I read it on Twitter!" - yeah, right), primary sources such as those are not waht Wikipedia content should be based on, and they cannot establish significance. We don't need to cover everything the band published on social media. And in this particular case, there are multiple paragraphs covering years of the band's existence based on nothing but their own word. That is problematic. Also, ReferenceBot didn't notify you because it was unhappy with the primary sources (it's too dumb to care about that), but because when you removed the maintenance tags, you also removed a </ref> tag, breaking the reference in the process. - @Kathydi1977: This probably is moot since you are currently blocked for making legal threats. That said, the article already amply covers Levene's role in The Clash and should not at length present his own view based on nothing but his own word. We're not a platform for Levene's self-promotion. That's not even taking into account issues of plagiarism or copyright which might also have been an issue. Finally, Levene's unhappiness with Wikipedia might possibly be relevant to Levene, but it's utterly irrelevant to a band that was disbanded long before Wikipedia was founded. The article should be about The Clash, not about itself. Huon (talk) 22:19, 12 February 2015 (UTC)

Comment/question: I did a major edit on the Wikapedia pertaining to Ted Healy. Who ever put the original information was well meaning but there are some important details that are wrong. I know something about this subject, I literally wrote the book about him. "Ted Healy-Nobody's Stooge" (Bearmanor Media) Dec. 2014 ISBN#: 978-1-59393-768-3. His name wasn't Charles Nash, it was Ernest Lea Nash. I obtained all my data from public records and baptism records and traced his life. I would like to add my book as a reference to this site, but details need to be cleaned up first. Bill Cassara (talk) 07:41, 8 March 2015 (UTC)
Bill Cassara Wrong place, this talk page is concerning broken brackets. Try asking your question at the Teahouse. Bgwhite (talk) 08:06, 8 March 2015 (UTC)
- @Bill Cassara: I am rather skeptical about the motives of somebody who takes the article on Ted Healy and adds a paragraph on how well-received his own book is - that's rather obviously irrelevant to our readers' understanding of Healy and only serves to promote your own work. If you are an expert on Healy and want to improve Wikipedia, surely you know of sources other than your own book that make the same points? For example, threestooges.com, the source we currently cite for Healy's name, already says his name was Ernest Lea Nash - "Charles" isn't backed up by that source and appears to have been vandalism. The article on Healy could do with some more attention (as a trivial example, his "citizenship" is hardly "Holy Innocents' School" as the infobox currently says), but given your obvious conflict of interest it may be a good idea to propose specific changes on the talk page and let uninvolved editors decide on implementation. The display-authors parameter apparently doesn't work in conjunction with "authors=", but only "author1=", "author2=" and so on, or "last1=", "last2=" and so on. If you use "authors=" to write out an explicit list anyway, there's no benefit to not adding the "et al." to that list directly. Huon (talk) 00:51, 30 April 2015 (UTC)

Hello, I have visited my page for the first time for a long time and am surprised to see that its authenticity is being challenged. This happened several years ago. Please tell me what the actual problem is? If it is a minor punctuation error please let me know.
- @Jeremy Broun: As the name implies, BracketBot is an automated program concerned with mismatched brackets, and in the edit it pointed out on your talk page you added an opening bracket, but no closing bracket. I fixed that, but the article has more severe problems: It does not cite any reliable sources with the possible exception of An Encyclopedia of Chairs - and it doesn't provide much bibliographical information about that one, making it hard to identify. Wikipedia content should be a summary of what reliable third-party sources such as newspapers or reputable magazines have reported about a person. You may also want to take a look at our guideline on conflicts of interest; writing an autobiography is strongly discouraged because it's difficult to maintain a neutral point of view when writing about oneself. If you had given an indication of where the note was left I could have taken a look and fixed whatever issue the bot pointed out, but unfortunately you didn't do so. For registered users it's possible to tell ReferenceBot not to notify them of their mistakes (and a registered user wouldn't receive messages meant for other people either), but there's not much of a point to doing something about IP addresses you share with others and likely won't be using again the next time you visit Wikipedia. - @SusunW: So the book misprinted its own ISBN? While technically it might be possible to add a list of ISBN "redirects", I rather doubt it's common enough an occurrence to justify the huge effort, which would probably include significant changes to the Mediawiki software, not just to templates or other user-designed content. (Out of curiosity, did you check a physical copy of the book, or did you rely on Google Books' digitalization? My trust in the accuracy of scanning was recently shaken, and I'm not sure I'd consider a pattern matching error during digitalization less likely than a misprint in the physical book.) Anyway, I'll leave a note at Wikipedia talk:ISBN, but I don't really expect any positive results.
- A930913, what I'm much more concerned about is that apparently the edit that caused the ISBN error was [8] while SusunW was notified about the earlier diff [9]. Huon (talk) 13:42, 31 January 2015 (UTC)
- Thanks anyway. At least we got the right one on the file. I would never have known it was printed wrong in the book. And no, I have no access actual to English language books here in Mexico, only web versions. SusunW (talk) 15:46, 31 January 2015 (UTC)
- I think we've come across about 3 or 4 books with a misprint in their own ISBN. It may be worth inserting an HTML comment to stop people "fixing" these, and I suppose we could also add it to AWB's list of typos -but people over there were getting a bit squiffy over the size of some of the replacement tables (for no good reason that I could see). All the best: Rich Farmbrough, 01:28, 3 April 2015 (UTC).

- I fixed about five thousand ISBN errors in the past year or so, and I found ten or twenty instances of invalid ISBNs printed in sources. In some cases, where the invalid ISBN actually worked as a link to worldcat.org, I inserted an HTML comment in the citation and used a parameter to suppress the error message (since the point of the linked ISBN is the help the reader locate the source, and that function was actually working). In other cases, I replaced the ISBN with an OCLC or other identifier that leads to the book. – Jonesey95 (talk) 02:11, 3 April 2015 (UTC)

I'm very new and had never added "Notes" before so I'm not surprised I did something wrong! :) I got frustrated as an editor kept reversing changes I made to the page with comments that weren't very mentoring or generous. Instead of writing, "citation needed" on my changes, he deleted them. Background: In March/April a big cull was made to the page and a lot of good, if not well presented information (put up by newbies), was lost. Subsequently, authors not empathetic to what the page represents, have put up a lot of information showing why or how they dislike it. The Notes I wrote up, that the ReferenceBot flagged, identify the first principle or first stage of error with some of this unsympathetic information. That is, the choice to use Chinese and Japanese language symbols currently in use in Japan and China which are, in fact, not the symbols used to represent the name, Reiki. Thanks for your time on this!

- Yes there is; it immediately shows what source we originally cited, without the need to go through the web archive. After all, the web archive is only reproducing that now-gone original, it's not a reliable source in its own right. I did some major edits on "David Holman" who is me. There were several errors and omissions, however I accidentally deleted a line or two of references since this was the first time that I had registered and done any editing on any person or subject. I've read the instructions on correcting these errors, but do not understand how to accomplish it. Help! Signed: Columbia37

- @Columbia37: Others have fixed the references, but the content you added largely does not seem to be based on the reliable sources cited in the article. For example, "Holman currently lives with his life-partner Tom Young and their Westie "Mactavish" in Surprise, AZ, and Holman continues to do creative writing and has been speaking to numerous film & TV students in Texas, California, Illinois & New Mexico." - how can our readers verify that statement? Comment/question: I can't find errors in the refs mentioned in the diff by ReferenceBot. I created a sample <ref> using ProveIt, and it matches the refs I created. I also checked {{cite web}}'s documentation, and it seems the reported offending refs are in order. RefToolbar also returns no errors.

{{Page: List of sounding rockets
Diff: List of sounding rockets: Difference between revisions and the style of urls given as sources.
Comment/question: Most of the examples given by the ReferenceBot are false positives. The page has the following comment: "This list is incomplete; you can help by expanding it." I am adding entries (rockets) and supplying citations for those already listed on the page. This seems to have freaked your ReferenceBot out. I see nothing wrong with the edits. Sometimes the ReferenceBot has flagged "errors" which are in the urls of the pages cited to as in he example "cite web |url=http://www.astronautix.com/fam/skylark.htm#more |title=Skylark |publisher=Encyclopedia Astronautica |accessdate=2015-08-05". I am not responsible for the urls used at my sources.
Sometimes the ReferenceBot has flagged instances where I added citations such as the change from "* Kumulus" to "* Kumulus[1]".
In other cases the ReferenceBot has flagged an instance where I changed the entry from one citing specific versions to one referencing a "family as in "Skylark". There are 26 Skylark versions. I may yet list them all. I am just trying to fulfill the request "This list is incomplete; you can help by expanding it."
In the instance "Disambiguation link notification for August 7" I fixed it.
Regarding "Editing User talk:A930913 (new section)." I feel my comments on the talk page have not violated Wikipedia:Talk page guidelines. I have tried to explain why certain actions were taken. This is done to comply with the talk guideline "The purpose of a Wikipedia talk page (accessible via the talk or discussion tab) is to provide space for editors to discuss changes to its associated article or project page." I have also complied with the guideline "Use separate subsection headings to discuss multiple changes:" I have taken pains to document the reasons for my actions and supply citations to the sources for those actions. This meets the instruction "Discuss edits: The talk page is particularly useful to talk about edits." I even cited NASA's definition of "Sounding rocket" so that editors would know what criteria I am using to decide what is, or is not, a sounding rocket. I did state an opinion in the "V-2 and Bumper" section when I gave a reason for including Bumper as a sounding rocket. The talk page guidelines state " It is a generally accepted standard that editors should attempt to follow, though it is best treated with common sense, and occasional exceptions may apply." I feel that that example is within the realm of "common sense" when giving an explanation for including Bumper despite it having been a test vehicle.
As for the spelling of color I can only quote George Bernard Shaw "England and America are two counties separated by a common language."

Thanks. but... Thanks for notice about missing bracket(s) on 'Bishop'. I have corrected mine, and thanks for pointing it out. But you also mention another missing bracket in opening line re ....Testament]] Greek ἐπίσκοπος, epískopos, "overseer", "guardian") is an ordained or consecrated member of the [[Clergy#Christian... etc I thought I could fix that too! But it seems that there is actually a pair () of brackets already there, and any 'fix' I attempt only makes it worse! So I've left it as it is! Regards --Observer6 (talk) 16:47, 3 August 2015 (UTC)
Observer6 (talk) 16:47, 3 August 2015 (UTC)
- @Observer6: Thanks for fixing that. The other unpaired bracket is a false positive in the first reference, where {{LSJ|e)pi/skopos1|ἐπίσκοπος|ref}} is used to produce a certain accent on the epsilon. I don't think the bot can reasonably resolve such uses. Huon (talk) 11:01, 22 August 2015 (UTC)

Comment/question: I was informed of "duplicate page numbers". I used the automatic citation tool. I think I fixed the problem, but I wasn't sure whether to use the 'page' or 'pages' variable. I choose 'page'. Also, the reference was found in the preface of a book, which are often numbered in Roman numerals. I assume there is no problem with that. Please let me know if I corrected it. Thanks. --98.122.20.56 (talk) 01:09, 16 August 2015 (UTC)
98.122.20.56 (talk) 01:09, 16 August 2015 (UTC)
- You've corrected it, thanks. If it's a single page, use "page"; if it's several (say, pp. 5–7), use "pages". There's no problem with using Roman numerals. Huon (talk) 11:01, 22 August 2015 (UTC)

My name is Mary and I received several notices that I tried making changes/edits to many web pages I don't recognize visiting. I'm not tech saavy and did not knowingly contribute ANY editing to any pages and apologize if it appears so. I don't know why its being linked back to me. As I only read wiki and am not knowledgable on such matters as editing and attributing materials. I don't even know how to create web sites.

Comment/question: This template is a table used in 2 articles. These articles have <references group="note" /> defined and my notes fit there. When I add this section to the template itself, it grabs all the notes on each article and leaves empty sections for notes in the article itself. I will leave it like this until someone provides a solution. Can you offer a solution?
Box73 (talk) 07:35, 22 August 2015 (UTC)
- @Box73: You can use <noinclude> tags to add content to the template page that won't be added to the pages where the template is transcluded, such as sections for the template's references and notes. I did so. See Help:Template#Noinclude, includeonly, and onlyinclude for more details. Huon (talk) 11:01, 22 August 2015 (UTC)
