YehudaDe (talk) 10:26, 27 September 2014 (UTC)
- I would assume that even within <source> tags brackets usually are meant to be paired, and while a mismatch there will not break the syntax it's rather likely to be due to a typo, not deliberate. Thus it seems useful to have the bot look for those mismatches, too. If your edit is meant to introduce a bracket mismatch, you can tell the bot to ignore it via the edit summary; see User:BracketBot#Single edit. Huon (talk) 14:20, 27 September 2014 (UTC)

Hello BracketBot, and thanks for contacting me. I fixed the braquet syntax that you mentioned and summarized the article description. Fixing this article has been a challenge because It looked as if it was written by a foreign English student. It was out of syntax and context, it was full spelling, and gramar errors. In addition it has a lot of broken links. so I'm still working on it. cleaning up broken links and rewriting sections in a better context, since it appeared to be crudely translated from spanish. Fotunately I am fully bilingual, but it will take some time to bring it completely up to wikipedia standards.
--IndependentThinkr (talk) 15:29, 9 October 2014 (UTC)
- @IndependentThinkr: Thanks for working on that article; it indeed needs quite a bit of cleanup. The most urgent issues to me seem to be the references - those it currently cites are either not independent or of dubious reliability (including Wikipedia itself). The Spanish article seems better-sourced; my suggestion would be to use some of those to improve the English version. Huon (talk) 20:51, 9 October 2014 (UTC)
- @Huon: I have looked into the references of the spanish article, unfortunately several of their references are offline; Like the magazine "SuperRock" it went out of business, and Los prisioneros.org is no longer active. a lot of their references cite "Narea 2009" (which actually is Narea; my vida como prisionero) a book which is out of print and there is not even a partial online version of it, not even quotes. Chilean & Peruvian Newspapers and magazines which could have been used as references, but they were never archived on line a lot of them are no longer in circulation. I will do my best.

That's caused by this code you added: <ref>{{sfn|Stuart|1999|pages=183-184}}</ref> - the {{sfn}} template creates a footnote on its own, and stacking one footnote within another will produce an error. Hello,
I inserted the question, What is a Christian apologist? You describe G.K. Chesterton's genre as "Christian Apologist". There is no such genre, and seems to be your creation. Chesterton clearly was a religious man and wrote about Catholicism, but was that out of place in late 19th and early 20th century?
- A Christian apologist is someone who engages in Christian apologetics. For sources calling Chesterton's work "apologetics", see for example Reasons for Our Hope: An Introduction to Christian Apologetics or Faith Reads: A Selective Guide to Christian Nonfiction. A possibly more reliable source also supporting that assessment is G. K. Chesterton: A Biography, published by Oxford University Press. Huon (talk) 14:29, 12 October 2014 (UTC)

- That clause has two closing parentheses, but only one opening parenthesis. I don't see why we should have that mismatch and have reworded that sentence. Huon (talk) 21:34, 16 October 2014 (UTC)

Arcar40 (talk) 11:42, 26 October 2014 (UTC) Hi, I would like to know why in Arturo Carsetti's page that I edit this : "This article has multiple issues. Please help improve it or discuss these issues on the talk page. This article needs more links to other articles to help integrate it into the encyclopedia. (October 2014) This article is an orphan, as no other articles link to it. Please introduce links to this page from related articles; try the Find link tool for suggestions. (October 2014)"
I put all the references, now is good but this add is still there. Could you please let me know why (if you know)? Thanks in advance. Arcar40
- First of all, I assume you are Arturo Carsetti, the subject of the article. In that case, you should take a look at Wikipedia's guideline on conflicts of interest. Writing an autobiography is strongly discouraged because it's difficult to do so from a neutral point of view. Regardint the maintenance issues, they are two sides of the same coin: The "needs more links" issue means that the article should link to more other Wikipedia articles. The "Philosophical and scientific views" section, for example, does not have a single link. The "orphan" issue meant that no other articles linked to the Carsetti one - that had been resolved, and I've removed it. Instead I added a tag that the article needs better references since currently it's based to a very large degree on primary sources such as Carsetti's faculty web page and his own writings - Wikipedia content should be based on what others have written about Carsetti and his work, not just on his own account. - @Alexandersawyer: The bracket issue was fixed by TheRedPenOfDoom who heavily edited the Cas and Jonesy article back in July. In short, you hadn't added the closing curly brackets at the ends of several citation templates. And regarding the "more citations", the problem isn't the sheer quantity, but that the sources you have serve only to support a comparatively small part of the draft's content. Some sections cite no sources whatsoever, other references support only a part of the paragraph they're cited for. Huon (talk) 23:59, 27 October 2014 (UTC)

Dienerto (talk) 16:04, 27 October 2014 (UTC) Thank you first of all, BracketBot, for helping me to make the changes of the "Viroid" page. They as necessary, because, as it stands, the page contains errors amd omission, as follows: 1.Old ref. 1 is a high-school level newspaper article by a science writeer and, in my mind, not suitable for Wikipedia. 2. As in the newspaper article, a very important publication of mine is omitted and must be added. 3. The first two paragraphs of the page are partly obsolete and must be replaced. This means to replace the first two paragraphs (as is already done, but also to rearrange and replace/delete and rearrange the references
I shall try to edit the page correctly this time. Thank you for your patience with some refs.dienerto Theodor O. Diener
- @Dienerto:
- The New York Times is generally considered a reliable source. If there are specific errors in that particular article, please point them out. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia for a general readership, not a scientific journal; high school-level texts may well be appropriate for the introduction to a subject. (If the NYT's main "fault" is that they don't cite your work, see below.)
- To be blunt, you may not be the best judge of the importance of your own work. See WP:COI and WP:SELFCITE.
- To be even more blunt, the new lead you wrote sounded like near-incomprehensible technobabble to me. I assume microbiologists or geneticists may know what an "RNA-based rolling circle mechanism" is; I certainly don't, and I would be surprised if many of our readers did. In contrast, the old lead, while still rather technical, provided a general introduction, links to some of the technical terms such as "nucleobase" that may not be commonly understood, a comparison to viruses, and so on - just from reading that lead I have a rough idea of what viroids are, and that's the way a lead section should be written. More details may have a place farther down in the article. If you think specific changes are required, please discuss your proposal on the article's talk page. Comment/question:
I am not sure what is messing up the link. It is a complex Internet Archive link with a tilde and question mark. I tried encoding as ˜ and removing the ?la=en. But no difference. Help please.
I know I should use a proper long form <ref> but I like the simplicity of taking a URL I am looking at and stuffing it into the archive. If the page is not cached, a copy gets cached. Works on PDFs too. Is there a tool that converts an Internet Archive link to a long from <ref>? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Robert.Harker (talk • contribs) 04:48, October 29, 2014 (UTC)
- @Robert.Harker: First of all, what you should not do is write about <ref> tags without enclosing them in <nowiki> tags. Otherwise everything afterwards will be interpreted as part of one big reference. Here that happened not only to your own comment but also to the one added afterwards. Please use the preview to make sure the displayed text is indeed what you intended to write.
- The link works fine for me. What BracketBot notified you about was the missing square bracket at the end. Fixed.
- I'm not aware of a tool that turns Internet Archive links into well-formatted references; I'd suggest using the RefToolbar (you may have to manually add parameters "archiveurl=" and "archivedate=" to the citation template such as {{cite web}}). Huon (talk) 21:44, 29 October 2014 (UTC)

If so, you may want to check out WP:Referencing for beginners; the video at that page explains how to easily create nicely-formatted footnotes. - I didn't see any immediate issues with that article. Is there anything specific I should be looking for? Regarding the edit to Abū Rayḥān al-Bīrūnī, there's no benefit to calling the Samanid Empire "Iranic" in that article. Readers looking for more information on the Samanid Empire can simply follow the link. I'll also note that the empire article calls it "Persian", not "Iranic". Huon (talk) 17:10, 9 November 2014 (UTC)
- thanks for ur following , so if u read the article about persian u will undestand that persian is equal with Iran.Because Iran name is known against Persian or Samanid Empire and because I think its better that everybody will being read about Abū Rayḥān al-Bīrūnī will understand that he had been from Iran or not another country, what is ur opinion my friend? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Arman53 (talk • contribs) 19:35, 9 November 2014 (UTC)
- Given that neither al-Bīrūnī's place of birth nor his place of death are in what is nowadays Iran, and that he worked most of his life in the capital of the Ghaznavid Empire, which was centred in Afghanistan, not Iran, claiming that al-Bīrūnī is "from Iran" seems to be incorrect. The article already says he was a Persian scholar, which refers to the culture, not the geography; that should suffice. Huon (talk) 20:24, 9 November 2014 (UTC)
- So I think it's difficult that I explain 4 u all history of Iran or Persia but at least I think you must know the personality or relation of everybody is his culture not his geography. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Arman53 (talk • contribs) 20:44, 9 November 2014 (UTC)
- Above you said you wanted people to understand "that he had been from Iran or not another country"; "country" sounds geographical or political to me, and neither would apply here. His place of birth also is an issue of geography or politics (ie what country or empire was he a citizen of?), not of culture. As I said, the article already says he was a Persian scholar; the infobox' "place of birth" field is not a good place to discuss the Samanid Empire's predominant culture. Huon (talk) 00:28, 10 November 2014 (UTC)

Peter and Paul Russian Orthodox Greek Catholic Church see HABS PA,56-BOSW,1-1.tif — note that there's an opening parenthesis in the filename, but no corresponding closing parenthesis. The bot did its job, since I added an odd number of parentheses. As long as we don't get the name wrong, we don't care about a file's name when we're adding it to an article; would it be possible to tell the bot to ignore brackets/parentheses/etc. in filenames?
Nyttend (talk) 02:46, 14 November 2014 (UTC)
- I'd expect it's possible, but is it desirable? What's more likely, that mismatched brackets in a file name are deliberate or that they're due to a typo? Huon (talk) 20:17, 14 November 2014 (UTC)
- I think it's desirable, if nothing else because someone might think that they'd made a mistake. Since we have to be precise with a filename, I always copy/paste it from the file's page, so it's extremely unlikely that I'd make a typo, and I expect that other people do likewise. Moreover, I can see someone thinking that they'd made a mistake and spend time going back to the page, and someone might even try to "correct" the situation and thereby break a link. Finally, typos are frequent in the actual names of files — a file works regardless of the name it's given, so people are sometimes careless when naming them, and renaming a file to fix a typo is normally a bit of work, especially considering that there's virtually no benefit to correcting a minor error. - @Randomharvest: If this is about the September 2013 message you received from BracketBot, the article had been deleted on the same day. Another version has been deleted today. You should take a look at Wikipedia's guidelines on notability, particularly for authors - at a glance Russell does not meet these criteria, and consequently Wikipedia should not have an article about him. The deleted article did not cite any reliable sources such as newspaper articles about Russell, or possibly book reviews. His Amazon profile is not a reliable source for a couple of reasons, including the fact that the biographical content is under Russell's personal control and could be changed by him to say whatever he wants, without any fact-checking or editorial oversight. Comment/question:I think it is a false positive as the reason it seems to me these errors arise (as I recently sent into "help") is because I diligently complete as much as I can that is required under the citing of references box-filling part of adding sources on Wikipedia
Blamethemessenger (talk) 02:17, 24 December 2014 (UTC)
- Thank you for improving citations in Wikipedia articles. The bot is just reporting minor formatting errors. You can use e.g. |page=101 for a single page or |pages=100-108 for a range of pages, but not both. The ISBN is shown as e.g. |isbn=978-1-234-56789-7, not isbn13. For future reference, complete details of the cite book template are at Template:Cite book: Noyster (talk), 10:25, 24 December 2014 (UTC)
- Fixed: [5][6] The "format=" parameter is meant for the file format of online sources (say, PDF) and thus requires an URL. Similar parameters for print sources are "language=" (if there could be any confusion about the source's language; English is usually assumed to be the default) and "edition=". This is the second bracket-error message I've received recently. Both pages seem fine, so I think this may be a bug in error-reporting. – AndyFielding (talk) 08:18, 5 January 2015 (UTC)
- @AndyFielding: It's the same problem as the last time (the last two times, to be precise): In addition to the edit you want to make, you duplicate a lot of stuff at the bottom of the article, including half a line with some mismatched brackets. I can't tell how that happens, but you may want to check the preview or the changes before you save an edit to make sure you don't do more than you intend. For now I've fixed the McCarthy article (while keeping the changes I expect you wanted to make). Huon (talk) 17:15, 5 January 2015 (UTC)

Meanwhile I would like to have the Tetrode page reassessed for quality, but can't find out how to request that. Perhaps you can help there ?
- BracketBot has a ten-minute wait between an edit that mismatches brackets and the notification. If you don't want to be notified of your mistakes at all, see User:BracketBot#Opting out. The Tetrode article is already correctly submitted for a peer review. Huon (talk) 01:18, 6 January 2015 (UTC)

- @Nomentz: Mismatched "<>" are often false positives; the bot keeps an eye on them because they're used in HTML and pseudo-HTML tags such as <ref>, where a mismatch may have severe consequences. The bot cannot reliably tell when they're used to mean "less than" or "greater than", though. Thanks for fixing the

Jaeze (talk) 16:38, 9 January 2015 (UTC) Regarding: November 2014[edit]
Hello, I'm BracketBot. I have automatically detected that your edit to List of poets from the United States may have broken the syntax by modifying 2 "[]"s and 2 "{}"s likely mistaking one for another. If you have, don't worry: just edit the page again to fix it. If I misunderstood what happened, or if you have any questions, you can leave a message on my operator's talk page.
I did not see the item to correct it but I wish you would put the brackets back correctly so that they are done right.
Initially J S Shipman self-published but one of the poems got a poetry award and was published aas a result. The listing is because of the poetry award. Other Shipman works have been published as well. As to the question on notability Shipman is in a few Who's Who books, has a doctorate and has published magazine and refereed journal articles. Her poetry (and for that matter artwork) often are about sustainability. Shipman is a member of the writing communities TIBU and TIBUII. As a scientist, she was the first person to measure membrane potential in trees and created a cell stability index (published by the University of New Hampshire. She has worked as a botanist, teacher, and electrochemical engineer.Jaeze (talk) 16:38, 9 January 2015 (UTC)
- @Jaeze: Wikipedia measures notability not by what a person has done, but by what others have written about her - we'd need articles about Shipman in newspapers or reputable magazines, or maybe published reviews of her literary or scientific work. The list of poets from the United States is supposed to only list people we have an article about, both because a mere name isn't particularly helpful and to prevent people from adding every Joe, Dick and Harry that ever wrote a few lines that rhymed. By the way, the reference you added gave me a "503 Service Unavailable" error message. The entry has since been removed, and I fixed the remaining unrelated mismatched parentheses. Comment/question:
- Your bot claims that the arXiv link is erroneous, but it works fine. arXiv:1501.01375
- http://arxiv.org/abs/1501.01375 Something is wrong with the citation template checker function
65.94.40.137 (talk) 04:08, 10 January 2015 (UTC)
- This is not a problem with the bot, but with the CS1 citations themselves. I suspect they check for the correct number of digits but haven't considered that the number of digits from 2015 onward is larger than before. There is an (incorrect) arxiv error noted on those pages, and the bot notifies you about it. I've left a note here. Huon (talk) 13:24, 10 January 2015 (UTC)
- And we are already working on this. See Help talk:Citation Style 1/Archive 7#arXiv identifier. -- Gadget850 talk 14:21, 10 January 2015 (UTC)
