Happy New Year!
[edit]Walter Elmer Schofield, Across the River (1904), Carnegie Museum of Art. |
Best wishes for a safe, healthy and prosperous 2021. | |
Thank you for your contributions toward making Wikipedia a better and more accurate place. BoringHistoryGuy (talk) 15:21, 26 December 2020 (UTC) Oneupsmanship: This painting turned the friendly rivalry between Edward Redfield and Elmer Schofield into a feud. Schofield was a frequent houseguest at Redfield's farm, upstream from New Hope, Pennsylvania, and the two would go out painting together, competing to capture the better view. Redfield served on the jury for the 1904 Annual Exhibition of the Carnegie Institute; at which, despite Redfield's opposition, Across the River was awarded the Gold Medal and $1,500 prize. It was not until a 1963 interview that the 93-year-old Redfield revealed the painting as the cause of the 40-year feud between them. Schofield may have painted it in England, but a blindsided Redfield knew that it was a view of the Delaware River, from his own front yard! |

{{subst:New Year 2}} It is good to have industrious and responsible editors creating more good quality articles. Speedy deletion nomination of Hester Jeffreys
[edit]If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.
You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.
A tag has been placed on Hester Jeffreys, requesting that it be deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under two or more of the criteria for speedy deletion, by which pages can be deleted at any time, without discussion. If the page meets any of these strictly-defined criteria, then it may soon be deleted by an administrator. The reasons it has been tagged are:
- It is an article with no content whatsoever, or whose contents consist only of external links, a "See also" section, book references, category tags, template tags, interwiki links, a rephrasing of the title, or an attempt to contact the subject of the article. (See section A3 of the criteria for speedy deletion.) Wikipedia has standards for the minimum necessary information to be included in short articles; you can see these at Wikipedia:Stub. Also please note that articles must be on notable subjects and should provide references to reliable sources that verify their content.
If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator, or if you have already done so, you can place a request here. 5a5ha seven (talk) 03:30, 12 February 2021 (UTC)
- Thank you 5a5ha seven. I created the redirect page Hester Jeffreys in error. It was for a typo, not a variation on the name Hester C. Jeffrey and should be deleted. WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 16:56, 12 February 2021 (UTC)

women's club items for Women In Red editing drive
[edit]Hi, a banner tells me it is near International Women's Day, etc. When I browse in wp:WOMRED's index of redlinks, I cannot find where historic women's club items would be. It was fun in the past working with you and User:Megalibrarygirl and User:Missvain and User:Pegship, on NRHP, California Historic Landmark, etc. articles. Could any of you figure out how to put these redlinks into the month-long March editing drive?
The following are red links on List of women's clubs page which provides context and examples:
- Grosvenor Crescent Club, London, which split off from the Pioneer Club (women's club), London, UK
- National League of Colored Women, of Washington, D.C.
- Mesa Woman's Club, Mesa, AZ, NRHP-listed
- Tempe Woman's Club, Tempe, AZ, NRHP-listed
- Woman's Club (Safford, Arizona), Safford, AZ, NRHP-listed
- Montebello Woman's Club, Montebello, CA, NRHP-listed
- Several clubs not-NRHP-listed but maybe notable, for which the NRHP docs in Women's Athletic Club of Alameda County provide some info:
- Woman's Athletic Club of San Francisco (1914), 640 Sutter St.
- Women's Club of San Francisco (1927), also on Sutter Street
- Women's Athletic Club of Los Angeles (1924)
- Women's City Club of Oakland (1927-1928), 1428 Alice Street
- Woman's Athletic Club of San Francisco, San Francisco, CA, NRHP-listed
- Colorado Federation of Women's Clubs
- Davie Woman's Club, Davie, FL, NRHP-listed
- Everglades Women's Club, Everglades City, FL, in 1965 took home in NRHP-listed Everglades Laundry
- Women's Campus Club, HI, established in 1920, grew from 1908-founded "Women's Club of the College of Hawaii"[10]
- Soroptimist International of Kona, HI (1971)[11]
- Chicago Political League, Chicago, IL, which was pressed by the Frederick Douglass Woman's Club into extending its membership to African-American women.
- Mansfield Woman's Club, Mansfield, OH, NRHP-listed
- Dundee Woman's Club Hall, Dundee, OR, NRHP-listed
- Kirkland Woman's Club, Kirkland, WA, NRHP-listed
- Longview Women's Clubhouse, Longview, WA, NRHP-listed
- Woman's Club of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, WI, NRHP-listed
- Guam Women’s Club (founded 1952), asserted to be the first women’s organization on Guam.[21]
- International Women's Club of Guam (founded 1973)[22][23]
- National Conference of Puerto Rican Women (founded in 1972 in Washington, D.C.)[24]
And best of all perhaps: Tomato club movement or Tomato clubs which were women-empowering and interesting predecessors to Home Demonstration Clubs. See sources Tomato clubs at NCpedia and other sources at archived discussion User talk:WomenArtistUpdates/Archive 2019#Home Demonstration Clubs, and more about Women's Clubs
Also from a very early version of the Home demonstration clubs article:
- Emma Archer, the first home demonstration agent in Arkansas, who organized a canning club for girls in Mabelvale, Arkansas in 1912. She was appointed a state agent in 1916, and supervised experts and district supervisors in a growing system. The system was not racially integrated; black women agents worked with black women in counties having a large black population, and white women agents served black clubs elsewhere.
- Mary L. Ray, who served as the Negro District home demonstration agent in Arkansas from c.1918 until her death in 1934 (while another longtime leader, Connie J. Bonslagel, served as Arkansas' state-level agent from 1917 until her death in 1950).
I'd be very happy if these could be included/offered in the March project somehow. Since the often-great NRHP registration/nomination documents can be a bit hard to find, while they are almost all now available in either the National Park Service's pages or the newer National Archives system (both covered in wp:NRHPHELP), I'd even be willing to try to provide corresponding links to those, to help any potential newbies. Say by editing over in whichever WIR or other page where they were offered.
Anyhow, even if nothing can be done, hope you are well, etc. Cheers, --Doncram (talk) 00:26, 2 March 2021 (UTC)

- Hi Doncram! Nice to hear from you. I see that Megalibrarygirl has got you pointed to the redlist for clubwomen. If you do create or improve some articles you could add them to the #1day1woman page and they would be included in Women in Red metrics. Also feel free to add the tag
{{WIR-00-2021}}
to the article talk page. And as MLG says if you want to point other editors to landmarks/women's clubs, please add the redlink under the "Add other red links here, if possible with a source:" which is located right under the red box called Redlists (lists of redlinked articles to be created) on the #1day1woman page. The tomato club topic seems ripe for the picking (ha ha sorry). Right now I am in the Netherlands (figuratively) working on Dutch women artists who were included in Onze Kunst van Heden so I don't know if I'll be able to take on the tomatoes just yet, but I will be around. Best, WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 16:40, 2 March 2021 (UTC)- Saw your .sig somewhere. I am chagrined to see all the suggested article topics are still redlinks, oh well. :( I'm sure i didn't do whatever would have been better to put these into play somewhere. I still think Tomato clubs would be a great topic. cheers, --Doncram (talk) 03:25, 12 October 2021 (UTC)

Question
[edit]Hi, thanks for all your work on notable women and the barnstar-giving out. Thanks in particular for your copyediting of some of my articles. This is kinda random, but do you understand what authority control actually does? I've never understood what it is or how it works. Cheers, Eddie891 Talk Work 20:17, 7 March 2021 (UTC)
- Hi Eddie891, "Authority control" is a template that links certain identifying information from Wikidata to the bottom of the subject's page in Wikipedia. It is visible in the desktop view of Wikipedia, but (I think) is not viewable on the tablet or phone version. In the case of Sue M. Wilson Brown it looks like there won't be any information added. But possibly, as the wikidata bots and editors work on the entry, some identifiers will be added. For now take a look at Mary Jane Coggeshall's article. There is a small authority control box showing her VIAF number and some other information. In my opinion, this information is useful to some serious researchers and also distinguishes people with similar names. I also assume that the reciprocity of connection from Wikipedia to Wikidata is valuable to Wikidata. As with anything on Wikipedia, there are editors and administrators who consider this information cruft. I don't, and have just gotten in the habit of adding the template to all new articles. Best, WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 20:36, 7 March 2021 (UTC)
- Eddie891 One other thing: I believe that Google uses the data from Wikidata to create the faux infoboxes on a Google search, and I think I heard somewhere at a wiki event that linking the article to Wikidata via authority control assists Google search. Sorry I can't point you to any documentation about this. WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 01:39, 8 March 2021 (UTC)
DYK for Stop AAPI Hate
[edit]On 10 March 2021, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Stop AAPI Hate, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Stop AAPI Hate was formed in 2020 in response to increased racially motivated violence against Asian people, which now includes the murder of Vicha Ratanapakdee? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Stop AAPI Hate. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Stop AAPI Hate), and if they received a combined total of at least 416.7 views per hour (ie, 5,000 views in 12 hours or 10,000 in 24), the hook may be added to the statistics page. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Hi! I reverted one of your edits and am coming by to explain. The 1954 Guggenheim fellowship is not mentioned explicitly on the Guggenheim page, but it's also clear he was awarded two fellowships form the Guggenheim foundation (see this). I am of the thought that he simply delayed the second one. --- Possibly (talk) 22:14, 15 June 2021 (UTC)
- Hi Possibly née ThatMontrealIP, Thanks for stopping by to explain. I know one cannot take "ownership" of an article, but I am particularly interested in the mid-century print movement and the National Serigraph Society and Atelier 17. There is a really interesting phenomenon of artists' children and grandchildren aiming to bolster their ancestor's legacy by writing a Wikipedia article. It has kinda turned into a pet peeve of mine, because usually there is an associated website to be promoted and the children can get as flowery, descriptive, and wander into apocryphal history there instead of here. The "one and done" articles written by newbies in the field of art is problematic and I am sure you have run across in your vast experience. Myers is lucky to have fallen under your wing. I realize that another editor put him in the Atelier 17 list of artists, but that list does not include the third iteration of the Atelier in Paris after the war, so I am going to leave him off.
- Setting aside Myers career, have you had a chance to look at the website The Women of Atelier 17:The Biographical Supplement? Great stuff, both the website and the artists.
- BTW, we are crossing paths a lot this summer. I am working on creating a start of a list of 21st century women artist as a continuation of the List of 20th-century women artists. I am in the research phase now. It will start with births in 1970. It is always delightful to run across your articles. Short, sweet, and solid!

I know it is a tough learning curve. Biographies of Living People (BLPs) fall under special scrutiny for notablilty and puffery. In my case I edited existing articles for about 6 months before I actually created an article. Reading through exisiting articles, seeing neutural tone and reliable sources, made me understand the guidelines for Wikipedia. Happy editing! WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 20:56, 16 June 2021 (UTC)

- Hi Maxmarsh2021, I just ran into an article that might serve you as an example. Beka Economopoulos is about as straight-forward as an article can be IMO. WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 22:25, 16 June 2021 (UTC)

WiG Good Article Editathon
[edit]Alanna the Brave, I assume you would like a riff on this logo. If you go to the talk page of the Latin America Editathon Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Women in Red/Meetup/205 you can see the barnstars I made for that contest. Something like that? WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 22:23, 16 September 2021 (UTC)
- @WomenArtistUpdates: thanks so much for this! Yes -- for our editathon event, I'm initially picturing a bronze star with Women in Green's logo in the center, possibly with some arched text along the top and bottom edges: "WiG Editation" and "October '21". If you have the time, it would also be great to assemble a basic WikiProject barnstar for Women in Green: a gold star with WiG's logo at center. Let me know what you think. Alanna the Brave (talk) 23:04, 16 September 2021 (UTC)
- Alanna the Brave I am happy to try. The barnstar (gold star with WiG's logo at center) is easy-peasy. Your idea for a logo with bronze star and curved text is a great idea!
but might take me a little while to finesse. Would the end of this weekend be OK for a deadline?draft version for your comments. WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 00:09, 17 September 2021 (UTC)

Alanna the Brave For you consideration. I can change fonts, sizes, or colors. Also, I created a category in the [Commons for your project]. Best, WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 16:32, 17 September 2021 (UTC)
- @WomenArtistUpdates: Wow! The gold project star is perfect (good sized logo). Thanks for making that category page too. I like the first draft of the bronze editathon star too, but I'm wondering: could we shrink the upper text a bit and aim to have all the text form more of an almost-circle around the star? If more text is needed for that, you could expand the bottom text to "October '21 - Women's Rights" (that's our event theme). Could we also try some different fonts for the upper "WiG Editathon" text (something a bit fancy/splashy)? End of weekend is 100% fine if you need more time. Thanks again, Alanna the Brave (talk) 20:06, 17 September 2021 (UTC)
- Alanna the Brave Is this more what you had in mind? I don't mind doing a few more tweaks if I can find a font close to what you want. They don't all "bend" well, but please point me towards a font you have in mind (anywhere oon the web) and I will play. Best. WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 01:10, 18 September 2021 (UTC)
- @WomenArtistUpdates: The contrast between the serif/non-serif font looks really cool -- I think I'm happy with the font types. :-) My next (and possibly last) tweak: can we un-stretch the font? I realize it won't make a complete circle anymore, but if we keep the general symmetry (or else fill in the empty circle-gaps with a dash or other filler symbol), I'm thinking it should still work out. Alanna the Brave (talk) 02:24, 18 September 2021 (UTC)
- Alanna the Brave text "un-stretched" somewhat. I was having trouble manipulating the size of the type and the tightness of the curve, so I had to reduce the size of the text a bit to keep the circle true. If you click on the image and go to the commons you can see/compare what we have. You have a great eye for this stuff! I won't have a chance to get back to this until this evening. WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 14:51, 18 September 2021 (UTC)
- @WomenArtistUpdates: I don't do a ton of graphic design, but I do enjoy artsy projects! Okay -- I got some external feedback on the design today indicating that the upper text "WiG Editathon" may be a little too tricky to decipher, so here's my next request: can we replace that flashy font with another serif font that's a little easier to read, and can we expand the upper text to say "Women in Green Editathon"? I'm also wondering if making that upper text entirely lowercase might make for a nice smooth arch, but I'm not sure -- let me know what you think. Alanna the Brave (talk) 21:16, 18 September 2021 (UTC)
- Alanna the Brave, Font swapped to legible serif. WiG written out. There's an all lower case version of the upper text as well if you look at the various versions in the Commons. I prefer the one with upper and lower. WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 21:54, 18 September 2021 (UTC)
- @WomenArtistUpdates: I agree -- upper and lower looks best. Font is very legible too. All right, I can't think of anything else to tweak. I think this will be perfectly good for the editathon event. Thank you for all the help! How do we finish up these two barnstars (editathon star & gold project star)? Does each image need to be incorporated into a template before the star can be given out? Alanna the Brave (talk) 22:56, 18 September 2021 (UTC)
- Alanna the Brave, Great. You would just copy the code. The words can be modified any way you want. You would add a signature to the left of the

Non-free rationale for File:Photo of Roberta Lawson.jpg
[edit]Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:Photo of Roberta Lawson.jpg. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under non-free content criteria, but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia is acceptable. Please go to the file description page, and edit it to include a non-free rationale.
If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified the non-free rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described in section F6 of the criteria for speedy deletion. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Virginia Civil Rights Memorial photos
[edit]Hi there, I see you added several very nice photos to the article Virginia Civil Rights Memorial, and that you tagged the photos with "cc-by-sa-4.0", because, obviously, you took them. But I wanted to let you know about an issue I've run into before with this article. Way back in 2009, when this monument was new, we had several similar photos up, until they were all tagged as copyright violations. The argument presented then was that while freedom of panorama exists for federal monuments, it doesn't for state owned monuments, which is why the article only had one tiny image that we had to move off the commons and tag with a fair use license, and even then it was reduced in size by copyright-weary bots twice. I myself find the idea the the Commonwealth of Virginia would sue a non-profit for displaying a monument so clearly on public ground as just incredulous, but I lost that argument. So I just wanted to let you know and give you a heads up!-- Patrick Neil, oѺ∞/Talk 19:33, 27 October 2021 (UTC)
- Hi Patrickneil. Thanks for the heads up. Wow! Sorry to read that your photos got tagged, and that you did not prevail in keeping the photos on the commons. I uploaded the batch of images of the Virginia Civil Rights Memorial via the "Wikipedia Loves Monuments" portal, so they were vetted at some point. Also in October I uploaded more photos of the Virginia Women's Monument. That monument has had image in the commons since Feb 2020. I uploaded photos of the very recent Emancipation and Freedom Monument also in Richmond. None of those images have been tagged (yet). Let's hope the entity that tagged your photos has revised their interpretation of problematic panoramic images of important Virginia monuments. I hope you still have the your original images from 2009. Perhaps you could try uplaoding them again through Wikipedia Loves Monuments. Best, WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 15:14, 28 October 2021 (UTC)
