Maria Ana Baptista

[edit]

Maria Ana Baptista is a Portuguese geophysical scientist born circa 1962.[1], best known for her interest and research in earthquakes and tsunamis. Baptista got her undergraduate degree in Physics from the University of Lisbon in 1984[1]. After, she finished her master's in Geophysical sciences in July of 1993 at the University of Lisbon as well[1], and continued to get her PhD in physics and geophysics in 1998 from the University of Lisbon. She specialized in geophysics, in which she did her thesis, "Genese Propagação e Impacte de tsunamis na costa portuguesa"[2], about the effects of tsunamis on the Portuguese coast. In 2009, Baptista finished her postgraduate specialization in Geophysical and Geoinformation sciences at the University of Lisbon[1].

Baptista is the executive editor of Natural Hazards and Earth System Sciences (NHESS) and has experience as a topical editor for NHESS, working on topics such as earthquake hazards, sea hazards, and coastal hazards[3]. Additionally, she has been the president of the ICG/NEAMTWS (Intergovernmental Coordination Group for Implementing Tsunami Early Warning Systems in the Northeast Atlantic, Mediterranean, and Adjacent Seas) from 2020-2024[4], previously having been the vice president of the group from 2007 to 2011. Furthermore, Baptista is also an editor for the Natural Hazards and Earth Systems Science journal and has run multiple workshops on tsunamis and threat assessment of at the Earthquake Monitoring Center of Sultan Qaboos University[4].

Studies and Research Projects

[edit]

Baptista’s studies mainly concern the causes and effects of natural disasters such as earthquakes and tsunamis, and the social and economic impacts these disasters may have. Her research publications begin in 1991, where she studied two historic earthquakes causing destruction in her native capital Lisbon, occurring on November 1, 1775 and February 28, 1969[5]. The Great Earthquake of 1775 in Lisbon serves as a huge exploration point for a majority of her works. In addition, many of her works reference historical documentation of large scale natural disasters.

Since then, Baptista has authored and co-authored around a hundred publications[6] in the field of geophysics, primarily regarding earthquakes, tsunamis and coastal hazards. The majority of her works come from the late 1990’s, 2000’s and the 2010’s. Her most cited resources include a paper she published on January 9, 2009 titled ‘Revision of the Portuguese catalog of tsunamis,’ with JM Miranda, which documents the various causes and effects of tsunamis in the Gulf of Cadiz of the coast of Portugal[7], and a paper published on January 1, 1998 titled ‘Constrains on the source of the 1755 Lisbon tsunami inferred from numerical modelling of historical data on the source of the 1755 Lisbon tsunami’ which aimed to remove the uncertainty of the Great Lisbon Earthquake of 1775 by using tsunami parameters rather than the conventional seismic-based approach to uncover the epicenter of the earthquake[8]

Baptista’s work has also helped build precautionary measures by providing official statistical data on tsunami wave heights using modeling software (This is further explored in her paper The Tsunami Generated by the Gorringe Bank Fault: Analyzing Wave Heights and Travel Time in the Atlantic Coast of Morocco.)
