This is an essay. It contains the advice or opinions of one or more Wikipedia contributors. This page is not an encyclopedia article, nor is it one of Wikipedia's policies or guidelines, as it has not been thoroughly vetted by the community. Some essays represent widespread norms; others only represent minority viewpoints. |
This page in a nutshell: While it might be cool to have your own Wikipedia article, chances are you're not notable. |
You're not notable. Yes I know, hurts to hear right? I mean after all, you are l33t, popular, funny, and your best friend thinks you are the most super awesomest person ever. Maybe your band just got done playing in your garage, and you think to yourself "We GOT to get on Wikipedia now right?". While yes, to your family, friends, co-workers, pets, you are very noteworthy, here however sadly.....you aren't. Many, many people decide to create these articles everyday and sadly they are deleted.
You may be asking yourself right now, why Wildthing61476, why are you being so mean? Here's the thing, I'm not, no really I'm trying to save you some grief here. Wikipedia has a set of guidelines that explain and go into detail of who and what is notable, and what is needed to prove a subject is notable. Let's start with the main subject of this essay, which is WP:N, Wikipedia's guidelines for notability. This guideline has a number of sections, including on people, which is WP:BIO. Here notability is pretty easy to understand, if you've been the subject of multiple secondary reliable sources, guess what, you're notable! Also, there are other ways to be included, such as winning a notable award, being a major politician, or a significant or unique contribution to entertainment. Now even here you can break things down, for instance if you are looking at your band's article, well there's WP:MUSIC. This article has a list of items that if your or your band meets, guess what? That's right you're notable.
Of course you are saying to yourself, but why is Wikipedia being so mean to me? Aren't I important too? Well, you are, but with the vast numbers of articles on Wikipedia, it's important to sort through what NEEDS to be in an encyclopedia, and what needs to be removed. After all, you wouldn't pick up a copy of say the World Book encyclopedia and see articles about a small band in suburban Walla Walla unless of course they were notable enough to be included in there.
