Life

[edit]

Early Life

[edit]

Love was born in Santa Monica, CA. The delivery occurred at home to mother, British traditional drummer Jennifer Love and father, William Apter, an American audio-visual salesman.

Having dual citizenship, she spent her childhood traveling back and forth between her English mother’s home in Bristol and her father’s home in California. Much of her time was also spent in Washington DC , the political capital of the United States.

Some of her earliest inspirations include her grandfather David Apter, who was the public relations representative for Martin Luther King Jr., and Dr. King himself. Her grandfather’s intense passion and devotion to the cause, recently resulting in his acceptance to the Civil Rights Hall of Fame, had rubbed off on Layla. However it was King himself who provided the impetus for her to take action and live a life of humanitarian service. Love met Banksy, a United Kingdom-based graffiti artist, political activist, film director, and painter, who “made her fall in love with art.”

Education

[edit]

Associates Degree, 1998. Love received her Associate Degree of Arts in communication at Richmond American International University, London, England, as part of the Honors Curriculum and made the Dean’s List Student. 1996–1998. She also received a Merit certificate for outstanding leadership and service, 1997 and was the Student government vice-president, 1996–1998.

Bachelors of Arts Degree, 2001. Love earned a Bachelors of Arts in Journalism and Visual Communication from the University of California, Santa Cruz in 2001, while interning as a journalist for two of the University papers: The Leviathan and City on a Hill.

Career

[edit]

Love’s work has been characterized as both “personal” and “universally beautiful.”[4] Love herself says “Art changes people and people change the world. The awe inspiring potential of the creative impulse is why I rise each morning. I am greeted with the knowing that art heals the unbreakable and love heals all. I have the pleasure of participating in the process.”

Love started her photography career in 1998 when she accompanied a cultural anthropologist to Northwest Africa (Chad, Cameroon and Nigeria) to document and record images of rare and controversial tribal customs.

While a student at UC Santa Cruz, Love worked as an intern for two student publications, Leviathan (2000) and City on the Hill (2001), where she researched and wrote bylined news features, provided feature photography and assisted with magazine layout and design. Love also helped with fundraising for the production of the publication.

Subsequently, Love exhibited a twelve-image series that explored the development of the female psyche, in conjunction with the Women’s Assembly Theater at a Gallery Exhibition at UC Santa Cruz’ Kresge Town Hall in 2003.

Love’s photography was first put on display in 1995 at the “California Southern County Art Showcase” in San Diego, where she won First Place for young photographer. Love has exhibited her photographic works all around the world, winning awards and raising awareness as well as funds for humanitarian causes, including raising $19,000 in 1999 for orphanages in Viet Nam by selling 100 photographic prints.

Love’s career also includes being a teaching intern in Santa Cruz, CA in 2001 and being and art therapist in Maryland in 2002.

Love is currently working with renowned spiritual teacher Michael Beckwith on a set of 120 affirmation cards called “She of God,” The affirmation cards will feature Layla’s original work on both sides accompanied with an inspirational quote from women all around the world, including Marianne Williamson, as well as some not-so-famous names. A 300-page guide book will accompany the cards.”
