Blowfish for Hangovers
Blowfish is an effervescent hangover remedy sold by Rally Labs LLC. The formulation is designed to be taken in the morning and is recognized by the FDA as effective for treating hangovers.[1] Blowfish was first introduced in 2011 and is distributed in 8,500 stores across the United States.[2]
Cost and Prevalence of Hangovers Studies have shown that hangovers cost the United States over $90 billion a year in lost productivity.[3] In 2013, Blowfish conducted a national poll of 5,429 Americans on their drinking and hangover habits. The results revealed that 50% of drinking Americans have been hungover at work.[4]
History
Rally Labs was founded in 2006, by Brenna Haysom, who had a career in finance before developing the idea while at Harvard Business School.[5][6] The product was first introduced in the New York marketing in 2011, and expanded to national distribution in 2013. It is the top-selling hangover remedy in the U.S.
Blowfish for Hangovers is currently the only product sold by Rally Labs. The company has noted plans for additional products in the future focused on lifestyles of younger consumers.[7]
Rally Labs is headquartered in New York City.
Ingredients
Blowfish is regulated as an over-the-counter drug and is registered with the FDA under NDC code 75920-0464.[8] The product consists of effervescent tablets that contain a maximum strength dose of aspirin (1000 mg per two tablet dose) and about as much caffeine as a cup of coffee (120 mg per two tablet dose)[9]. A number of studies have shown the benefit of combining a pain reliever and caffeine to relieve hangover symptoms[10], but acetaminophen (Tylenol, Excedrin) should be avoided after alcohol consumption because of the risk of serious liver and kidney complications.[11] Blowfish uses medicinal caffeine in a buffered, effervescent tablet. Effervescent tablets have been shown to work twice as quickly as regular pills and have a buffering effect that protects the stomach lining from irritation.[12] Medicinal caffeine is gentler on the stomach than equivalent doses of coffee.
Distribution
Blowfish’s primary distribution is within drug stores, although it is also sold in convenience and liquor stores. The company website states that Blowfish is available at 8,500 retail locations including CVS, select Walgreens, and Rite Aid stores.
