Founded in 1902, the Franklin Square House provided reasonably-priced, safe housing for working women in Boston at 11 Newton Street. The building was originally the St James Hotel, built in 1886. It became the New England Conservatory in 1880 which offered instruction in music, elocution, and languages. In 1891, it became the New England Conservatory of Music. In 1902, Rev. George L. Perin, minister of the Shawmut Avenue Universalist Church, organized a non-profit corporation to purchase it as a residence for women and, in 1914, they added a second building. In 1970, the Franklin Square House was sold to the city of Boston which now uses it as for the elderly.
