If you are reading this, you most likely were reading a response from me and thinking about replying back to me (or you somehow manage to stumble upon this, then congrats to you!). Anyways, you may have noticed that my signature is "Icepinner (formerly Imbluey2). Please ping me so that I get notified of your response". Most people do actually ping me but there are a few who either try to ping me or just don't at all. I'm not mad at you if you were one of those types but for your consideration, please read this essay!
Why should you ping?
[edit]You might be wondering "Oh why should I ping, it doesn't matter". Well, if you don't ping me, then that means I don't know if I received a new response or not. Moreover, that means I have to go through a bunch of webpages just to see if someone has responded to me and that is extremely inconvenient. Point is, please ping me!
Pinging
[edit]Look at Help:Talk pages#You have new messages. Also for some reason, I can directly type '@' to notify someone when using VisualEditor (though it has to be someone in the conversation).
When I put my signature (which links to this page), I expect that you read it. Furthermore, I also expect that you will ping me for every subsequent response until the end of the conversation. An exception to that rule is when I forget to put my signature. When I have to use Source Editing, I sometimes forget to input my signature. During that interval (until I remember to put my signature in my response), I don't mind if you don't ping me since it's my fault for not telling you to ping me. However, when after I remember to add my signature, I expect you to ping me for every subsequent response unless if it's not nessecary.
When not to ping
[edit]- If it's the end of a conversation (I don't really care). It's pointless to ping me just to indicate that the conversation ended unless if you a closing a discussion such as a GAN or a DYK nomination.
