David Adeola Adeyemo (born April 21, 1993) is a Nigerian-born American weightlifter, author, and U.S. Army sports performance coach. He earned recognition for winning gold medals in the 2010 Youth African Weightlifting Championship in Cairo, Egypt, the 2011 Junior Commonwealth Weightlifting Championship in South Africa,[1] and achieving success in the Nigerian National Sports Festival. David has contributed as a coach, author, and advocate for health and fitness.
Early Life and Education
[edit]David was born on April 21, 1993, in Nigeria. During his early years, he developed an interest in weightlifting, which later led to representing Nigeria in international competitions.
In 2010, he achieved his first major milestone by winning a gold medal in the Youth African Weightlifting Championship held in Egypt. The following year, he added another gold medal to his record at the Junior Commonwealth Weightlifting Championship in South Africa. After winning gold medal at the 2012 Sports Festival in Lagos,[2] the Governor of Bayelsa State, Henry Dickson, recognized his achievements and promoted him from grade level 8 to 10.[3]
After moving to the United States, David joined the U.S. Army and attended American Military University, where he obtained a Bachelor of Science in Public Health. He later earned a Master of Public Administration and a Master of Science in Human Resources Management from Golden Gate University. He also completed a Master of Science in Nursing from Elmhurst University and is pursuing a Ph.D. in Global Health and Development from Africa Research University.
Career in Weightlifting and Coaching
[edit]In 2014, David was appointed as a coach for the Kenyan National Weightlifting Team in preparation for the Commonwealth Games held in Scotland. He has since mentored several athletes, including Mercy Obiero, James Adede, and Stephen Opondo.
David represented the U.S. Army at the national level, as well as Team USA in Barbados in 2018.
