[edit]

Wow, that's quite a bit more. I can only name a few German actors, nowhere near 21,000. --Happy editing! Nehrams2020 (talkcontrib) 02:21, 2 July 2010 (UTC)

Dear Blofeld, how are you? Well you probably don't know me, but I have seen your work around the Bollywood related articles. I just created an article on an upcoming actor of bollywood named Maradona Rebello. Would you be interested in taking a look at the article? --Legolas (talk2me) 07:13, 2 July 2010 (UTC)

Thanks. Its a start though. And I couldn't do anything about the Hungama watermarks. Removing it would have given only the head of the subject. That's creepy :) --Legolas (talk2me) 09:47, 2 July 2010 (UTC)

Yes, wherever I find an internet facility I work on wikipedia. My people say that I am really possesed by "Wiki Bhootham" (Wiki ghost) or "Ma Wiki" spirit. I have added some text to the above draft article from Simple English Wikipedia where one reference is in French and the other is in Spanish. It now needs your expert verification. I have completed my work on it. It is left to you now to copy edit and post it on DYK. The Vietnam article in User:Nvvchar/Vietnam Province 3 has the history linked to present day Vietnam. I have mostly completed my inputs but some part of History needs verification by Yellowmonkey with some more eferencing. If I find internet on the ship I will continue with my wiki work.-- N.V.V. A tag has been placed on El Poder de las tinieblas requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a very short article providing little or no context to the reader. Please see Wikipedia:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles. Also please note that articles must be on notable subjects and should provide references to reliable sources that verify their content. You may wish to consider using a Wizard to help you create articles - see the Article Wizard.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag - if no such tag exists then the page is no longer a speedy delete candidate and adding a hangon tag is unnecessary), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the page does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that they userfy the page or have a copy emailed to you. Hanoi districts

[edit]

I noticed you've added a list of redlinked streets to Dong Da, Ba Dinh and Cau Giay. Are you sure it's worth it to add all of those? I doubt that any particular street in any of those districts is notable enough to deserve an article of its own (as would, say, Wall Street)... wards, sure, and maybe notable buildings on some of them, but not the streets themselves.

One thing I could see working is a list of streets in the Old Quarter, in Hoan Kiem District, since those are well-known for their themes (i.e. one street for sunglasses, one for silk, another for shoes, etc). That kind of list would be notable, and would be a valuable addition to the scanty coverage of the Old Quarter (which has been at WP:VIET's Requested articles section since forever). --dragfyre_ʞןɐʇc 18:48, 6 July 2010 (UTC)

OK, that's fine. I just noticed the change and wondered if there was any particular intention behind it, but I understand. Regarding province/district articles, one thing that would be wonderful to have is demographic tables instead of plain lists of subdivisions, such as what we have at Mekong_Delta#Provinces. Bare lists are boring to see, and it's easy to look up population/area/density figures for the different provinces and districts. Are the Regions of Vietnam on the priority list? Some of those (like Nam Trung Bộ and Tây Bắc) have been stubs for ages.

By the way, speaking of all these Vietnam-related articles, there are a few issues for discussion at WT:WPVIET that you might want to give your two cents on, such as the use Diacritics in articles and article titles, and the size of locator maps. --dragfyre_ʞןɐʇc 19:54, 6 July 2010 (UTC)

Thanks, although I should be slightly insulted at the suggestion I only do articles on Nigerian Generals. You may not be aware that I was a major contributor to Roadkill cuisine, which made onto the front page with the assertion "Did you know ... that partaking in roadkill cuisine is advocated by some vegans?" It lasted about an hour before it was yanked after the howls of protest started flooding in. A high point in my editing career. In the heat of a war over AfDs for bilateral relations articles, I think Iceland-South Korea relations was something of a classic. Seriously though, I notice that your earlobes look completely different these days. Aymatth2 (talk) 00:25, 7 July 2010 (UTC)

Just kidding. I tend to stray into an area, do some editing on related articles, then get sidetracked and stray off into some other area. Think you do too. To me, editing is a bit like doing a jigsaw puzzle where you don't know what the picture will look like until you have dug around to find the pieces and then fitted them together. I am not that picky about the subjects, although mostly they seem to be people or places. A harmless pastime, maybe sometimes useful if there are not too many gaps in the pictures. Aymatth2 (talk) 13:30, 8 July 2010 (UTC)

I am optimistic. In a sense, the whole web is a very informal sort of mega-wiki where people present material and the search engines crudely cross-index the sites. Some sites are fairly reliable, others not at all, and readers make their own judgement. Wikipedia is part of that broader context. I am sure the overall web will evolve to give better databases, indexes, cross-linkages and reliability weightings - these are still very early days. Wikipedia will probably also evolve to include more formal linkages to trusted databases, and maybe some day will dissolve out into Web 5.0 or whatever. I don't see it as a static structure, and do see value in whatever content is added, even if there are huge gaps. Meanwhile, it is satisfying to focus in on one subject and put together a essay that gives some information that may be of use. Aymatth2 (talk) 14:39, 8 July 2010 (UTC)

Notability question

[edit]

Dr. Blofeld, hi there and thank you in advance for your attention! I wanted to ask you a very specific question and I wanted to address you based on your vast experience in Wikipedia. Would merely having been a kaymakam (in the sense of sub-governor) be enough for notability? Would it pass wp:politician? I have a list of potential articles on former kaymakams in the 19th and 20th century in the Ottoman Empire, but I don't want them to go to deletion. --Sulmues Let's talk 02:42, 7 July 2010 (UTC)

I have just asked him. Will let you know what he says. Cheers,—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); July 8, 2010; 13:11 (UTC)

Yes, both the selsoviets and the corresponding rural settlements are in the database. Creating set indices on those is actually my first project after the database is finished, although I am still thinking about the best ways to go about those. So far I'm leaning to creating the set indices with redirects to the administrative/municipal composition sections of the appropriate districts. Then we'll be able to put the basic info into those sections without having to create ~20,000 substubs on each individual selsoviet. Of course, should someone have more than basic info about any given selsoviet/rural settlement, a separate article can always be created then. What do you think?

As for something like Template:Third-level administrative divisions of Russia, I should tell you that there's a lot more work there than meets the eye. Each federal subject of Russia has its own way of going about those (e.g., not everywhere they are called selsoviets, in some FSs selsoviets co-exist with other types of divisions, in others selsoviets don't even exist any more; plus, you need to cross-reference the selsoviets with the corresponding rural settlements, and not in all FSs they correspond 1:1; then there is that whole masculine/neuter/feminine naming mess... you get my drift? :)). Once the database is done, such a cross-walk can be created fairly easily (because all of the relations and terminology are properly documented); with a manual approach, it's just going to be one big mess... even with the example above, I count so many problems it makes me cringe to think them multiplied by 20,000 (or even by 238, if you only do Buryatia)... Sorry!—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); July 8, 2010; 13:38 (UTC)

Well, rural settlements are municipalities (are nicely/consistently structured/named they are, too); they are just added on top of the existing administrative divisions, which are not nicely/consistently structured/named :)

As for the database, here's where I'm at. There are 83 federal subjects that need to be covered. As of today, the database covers 40 FSs, which are in perfect order, and another 27 which need further review/clarification/amendment/updating (that's not too difficult of a task, though). Most of the remaining 16 are not in there mostly because the necessary sources are simply not yet available, although I am gradually adding the partial info as it becomes available.—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); July 8, 2010; 13:56 (UTC)

I don't want to start on the forty, because it's easier to do everything properly once than to have to update hundreds of pages every time additional info for new FSs becomes available... which will leave significantly less time for me to work on the database... it's a vicious circle I don't want to enter. Patience and focus pay, you know :)

When I will be 100% done, I don't know. When those sixteen FSs pass the missing laws I need is obviously not something under my control. On the bright side, I am on the finish line for some of the datasets (e.g., the lists of rural settlements are available for all 83 FSs; I just need to finish the data entry for the missing 16). Rest assured, I am neither slacking nor procrastinating; things are just taking longer than I anticipated. Honestly, had I known three years ago when I just started working on this blasted database just how much time and effort it is going to cost, I probably would have never even started the project in the first place. Lucky for y'all, once I start something, I don't stop until it's all done (unless I die first, that is :)).—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); July 8, 2010; 14:45 (UTC)

I'll shoot myself well before 2015, if I see it's going to be taking that long! :) I'm not planning to sit on my ass doing nothing and wait while those 16 FSs pass the laws I need either. Any missing information I do not yet have can be substituted by the data from OKATO. The reasons why I'm waiting are because despite technically being a "reliable source" (by our definitions) OKATO sucks big when it comes to actual accuracy and timely updates and because there is some other good-quality data which I can occupy myself with. While I'm working on the data entry, there's a chance some other missing pieces will appear, and I can get to work on that (when I started to work on the database, I only had good data for perhaps a dozen FSs). Once I run out of those, however, I'll start filling the missing pieces with the OKATO data. So don't you despair just yet :)—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); July 8, 2010; 15:14 (UTC)

I was thinking of producing copy-paste lists locally using the database and entering them manually into Wikipedia for a while (as to make sure the process flow is OK). After the process is polished and we make sure that there is not going to be something unexpected hindering with automation, someone will need to program a bot (I don't have skills for that part) and finish the job. If for some reason automation turns out to be unfeasible, then we'll dump the core onto a maintenance page, break the work into manageable pieces, write up detailed instructions, and call for volunteers (you are already signed up as #1 in that list, did you know? :))—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); July 8, 2010; 16:25 (UTC)

Oh yes they can be. I didn't slave over these templates for no reason :)—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); July 8, 2010; 16:51 (UTC)

Coming back to the pin maps, Viktor said that he'd been taking a break from those maps for a while, but he is now just about to resume working on them again. I think we'll have more of those pin maps fairly soon. Cheers,—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); July 9, 2010; 14:19 (UTC)

Oh, I think he knows :) I, too, hope he's not going to run out of steam before finishing the project... or we'll be stuck with yet another incomplete set of maps!—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); July 9, 2010; 14:32 (UTC)

Yes - you are right - will do that. Aymatth2 (talk) 13:42, 9 July 2010 (UTC)

Question: Template:Oaxaca has a huge list of municipalities hidden in it: there are 571. The list is not very accessible because the reader has to click "show" twice, and it is redundant to the sortable list in the article Municipalities of Oaxaca. I can't see much navigational value. What I would prefer is to make eight templates, one for each region, which would expand to show the districts and the municipalities within each district. Visually they would be a bit like Template:Regions and districts of Oaxaca, but one level lower, if that makes sense. I think it would be more useful for navigation. Would it violate an overall standard? Aymatth2 (talk) 14:10, 9 July 2010 (UTC)

I took a first shot at one with Template:Mixteca Region, Oaxaca. Still sort of hard to browse. Tried one for a district at Template:Huajuapan District, Oaxaca. Maybe this works better. Views? Aymatth2 (talk) 14:59, 9 July 2010 (UTC)

I have "done" Etla District, Oaxaca and the municipalities in the district. I think this works reasonably well for readers who use navbars to move around, and will continue with the other districts. They all need much more real content, but sometimes it is easier to do this kind of grunt work systematically first and get it over with, then do research & improvement. Issues

[edit]

OK, I think the shouting on both sides is done, and it's time to talk - reasonably, decently, productively.

With regard to the maps, I suggest starting a section heading on the talk page of the template and saying what you would like done - in particular, what maps etc are available (eg which you have created) to be used for the purpose. We managed it last September on the Australian template, I don't see why the same is not possible here as the formats are relatively similar and I should be able to figure out what the PNG people have done logic-wise. Orderinchaos 17:07, 10 July 2010 (UTC)

I just have an awful amount of work to be doing on here so anything which is unproductive and reverted I get angry with because the time spent on it could have gone into referencing/expanding our stubs. I think the PNG is redundant ans several years out of date. Obviously I am now powerless to delete it so please at least get rid of the old X and Y coordinates and update it with the svg maps and the regional map choice. I'd be happy to create maps of the provinces for regional views. Especially important for the islands. But if you insist it must me kept please please please get shot of the Krypton Factor maps and introduce a standard pushpin mapping option. Once again my main issue for the infobox is the maps. That is my major concern about most infoboxes I edit because I create maps and add them to articles and certain old templates do not allow for this. Dr. Blofeld White cat 17:13, 10 July 2010 (UTC)

That was what I thought too (I agree with you about the maps) - just wanted to make sure. Provincial views sounds good - we'd probably use the provincial views for smaller towns and the national for bigger ones. Orderinchaos 17:21, 10 July 2010 (UTC)

If you are wondering what I mean by Krypton Factor look at this. The colours look very familiar..

Haha yes... I think the problem was that back in the day the only thing we had that was legal was NASA satellite imagery (that and PNG is a very green, jungle-dense country). Even in my home state I still occasionally find crazy maps from the bad old days on some pages. Orderinchaos 17:27, 10 July 2010 (UTC)

Haha thanks! By 2020 maybe 50 or so will not be stubs eh? Just too much work needed!!! Dr. Blofeld White cat 07:40, 11 July 2010 (UTC)

I may expand a few. Some of them have no information at all, crying out to be fixed. It is easy enough to bring them up to the level of Santa Cruz de Bravo, which may be sufficient for a community of this size. But yes, a huge job. There are probably 10 million communities the size of Santa Cruz de Bravo. Aymatth2 (talk) 13:24, 11 July 2010 (UTC)

The new one was previously a part of Tehran Province and the locator of Tehran Proviance also needs new changes.Thank you --Alborz Fallah (talk) 17:57, 11 July 2010 (UTC)

Whatcha think? Is Enda Oates beyond "borderline" now? I'm now trying to think a suitable DYK. :) Schmidt, MICHAEL Q. 04:25, 12 July 2010 (UTC)

  • Wow. Thank you very much. THIS is appreciated, and I hope it acts as an inspiration to others to never give up. Best regards, Schmidt, MICHAEL Q. 08:17, 12 July 2010 (UTC)

Disco Ball of Knowledge
I, MichaelQSchmidt hereby award Dr. Blofeld this Disco Ball of Knowledge for his valued contibutions to the article Enda Oates. While I took meatloaf and turned it into steak, he took the steak and turned it into prime rib. With gratitude, I hereby award him this very rare award... for which all should admire and be slightly envious. His thoughtful work and thankless contributions continue to build a terrific Wikipedia. Keep up the great work! --Schmidt, MICHAEL Q. 20:56, 12 July 2010 (UTC)
Hello, Dr. Blofeld. You have new messages at MichaelQSchmidt's talk page.

Enda Oates

[edit]

Hi, I saw that you suggested a joint DYK for Enda Oates. MichaelQSchmidt had already nominated it before you began work on it, and when I verified the hook, I noticed your contributions, and I added credit for you. MANdARAX  XAЯAbИAM 21:26, 12 July 2010 (UTC)

Infobox

[edit]

Sorry, missed your message from a few days ago. Did you get consensus on the talk page of the template for adding those parameters. Usually adding or removing a single parameter can get a bit of a backlash or support depending on the change. --Happy editing! Nehrams2020 (talkcontrib) 02:15, 13 July 2010 (UTC)

Sorry, I didn't see any recent discussion about it. I know that we are trying to keep the infobox to a reasonable size, and adding more parameters may not be the best way to go. For some articles that use nearly all of the parameters, the infobox can stretch on quite a bit. We need to think of another workaround for featuring some additional fields within the article itself. --Happy editing! Nehrams2020 (talkcontrib) 05:39, 17 July 2010 (UTC)

I don't know...Norway has a couple of contenders... --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 20:04, 13 July 2010 (UTC)

So they tell me; as I was ten the last time I was in Oslo, I can't really comment. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 20:16, 13 July 2010 (UTC)
If you can make head or tail of this, it appears to be a list of Greenlandic parliamentarians... --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 20:21, 13 July 2010 (UTC)
I'm afraid I wouldn't be of much use, as I know neither Danish nor Greenlandic. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 20:33, 13 July 2010 (UTC)
Excellent. I may start a couple more artists later - we'll see. I made some good progress over lunch. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 20:45, 13 July 2010 (UTC)
Yeah - that's the case with a lot of those machine-transferred public domain texts; little blemishes get in the way and garble some words. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 20:54, 13 July 2010 (UTC)
It's surprising how inaccurate some of those old reference works can be. You think that's bad, check out Appleton's Cyclopedia of American Biography sometime. That one's legend for its inaccuracies. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 21:00, 13 July 2010 (UTC)
I know. A lot of old art history encyclopedias are similar; they go on about how an artist is either a good or a bad representative of his style, and don't hesitate to make value judgements. Which are nice, and all, but at another time and in another place. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 21:14, 13 July 2010 (UTC)
Well, I've seen a few old Russian ones (including a music encyclopedia my father has), and I know there was a dump from a German public domain encyclopedia in the German wiki some years back. So they are out there; and they'll probably make their way onto Google Books eventually. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 21:42, 13 July 2010 (UTC)
Maybe that's the one I'm thinking of, then. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 21:53, 13 July 2010 (UTC)
Potentially. Odd; I thought there were more categories than that. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 15:17, 14 July 2010 (UTC)

I'll see what I can do tonight. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 17:42, 14 July 2010 (UTC)
You're making me feel guilty I missed my walk last night. It would have been unwise to go - it was raining hard for most of the night. Still, I'm losing my belly bit by bit; the trick is going to be keeping it away during the winter months, now. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 20:26, 14 July 2010 (UTC)
For me, it usually hits around 2 in the afternoon and lingers for about a half-hour. It's most irritating; I feel like I'm walking through a vat of molasses for a while, and have to shake that off. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 20:52, 14 July 2010 (UTC)
I think part of it has to do with the natural cycle of the day, too; I know I'm usually feeling drearier later in the day. Besides, I'm a night person, most of the time; I really come alive later in the evening. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 21:07, 14 July 2010 (UTC)

Old encyclopedias

[edit]

Here's a Peruvian dictionary of biographies.[3] Only the T-Z volume is available in Google books. Could be a fun project to import these to es.wiki, then translate them over. Calliopejen1 (talk) 13:49, 14 July 2010 (UTC)

More biographical/other dictionaries: Yucatan, one on "mujeres celebres", Mexico. Calliopejen1 (talk) 13:55, 14 July 2010 (UTC) Chile one looks very good. A search to find more. Calliopejen1 (talk) 14:01, 14 July 2010 (UTC)
These are all full-text! (Along with all the ones in the search.) Just click on the cover to get in and browse. It's also all OCRed for easy copy/pasting. The Chile one is a very clean scan so there's almost no typos in the OCR. Calliopejen1 (talk) 14:08, 14 July 2010 (UTC)
Weird, could it because you're in the UK? Here's a page link.[4]. Calliopejen1 (talk) 14:14, 14 July 2010 (UTC)
For example: es:Melchor José Ramos. Calliopejen1 (talk) 14:28, 14 July 2010 (UTC)
I know google books limits access by machines (basically to hoard their public domain works - the only way they can protect their monopoly). I downloaded the book in pdf form (not OCRed) and am uploading it to megaupload so you can see the images. Maybe I could copy/paste the OCR and you could help proofread based on the book, and do some formatting with me? Calliopejen1 (talk) 14:43, 14 July 2010 (UTC)
Here you go [5]. Calliopejen1 (talk) 14:43, 14 July 2010 (UTC)
Sounds good... We'll have to figure out a good system. I found PDF (non-OCR) versions of the other volumes here. Calliopejen1 (talk) 19:13, 14 July 2010 (UTC)

Can you see this book? It's all of the biographies, A-Z. The scan isn't as clean so I'm not sure how the OCR compares. Calliopejen1 (talk) 16:40, 16 July 2010 (UTC)

There's also this companion book, with foreigners who were important in Chilean history. Calliopejen1 (talk) 16:42, 16 July 2010 (UTC)
I think the issue is that copyright expires automatically in the US for anything before 1923, whereas in the UK it depends on the death date of the author. So Google is safe to show it in the US, but for the UK they'd have to figure out when the author died... Calliopejen1 (talk) 16:51, 16 July 2010 (UTC)

Allan Burns

[edit]

Why did you make Allan Burns a disambiguation page? As per MOS:DAB, disambig pages shouldn't have any redlinks, leaving the screenwriter as the only notable entry. –Schmloof (talk · contribs) 04:59, 15 July 2010 (UTC)

Because I am getting off of my arse to create missing articles from the Dictionary of National Biography which few others could give a damn about. That's why!!!. They need to be dabbed first. Allan Burns will soon have an article... Dr. Blofeld White cat 08:13, 15 July 2010 (UTC)

Fine, but the new Allan comes nowhere close to the screenwriter in terms of WP:PRIMARYTOPIC. The screenwriter should get the article title, with a hatnote for the (disambiguation) page for your doctor article. Look at the number of articles intended for the screenwriter. --JaGatalk 12:11, 15 July 2010 (UTC)

A minor question.

Thank you, I'm fine. Been missing our usual discussions. If you talk about decent, the last decent movie I saw was Karthik Calling Karthik. You may like it. I miss watching Zinta on-screen and sadly she just disappeared. I'm afraid she just decided to quit acting because she promises all her fans on twitter to come back soon and nothing is coming out. Her film Har Pal got great complications because the leading hero Shiny Ahuja got arrested after his housemaid accused him of raping her... ShahidTalk2me 19:24, 16 July 2010 (UTC)
Ness Wadia is a finished phase in her life. She is 35 and she has to look for another guy. Today he is famous only because of his relationship with Zinta, not his being the grandson of MAG. Anyway, I'm not really following her IPL activities because frankly it doesn't interest me, I'm more interested in Zinta the actress. Too bad I'm not actually because there's a lot to update in her article re IPL. In a few days I'll start updating the article where necessary. I'm going to change some things, but I'm still happy everytime I read it. I think it's a very good article, and after two years it's steady as its good quality's been kept. Since its promotion it's only improved according to me. It may have got a lot to do with the fact that since then she has not done lots of work where acting goes, so there wasn't much to write about her. :) What about you? Any new projects? What about the braglist I had insisted that you create? ShahidTalk2me 20:27, 16 July 2010 (UTC)

Vietnam Articles

[edit]

Yes, I went on a 9 days cruise to Alaska. Incredible place to see. As regards Vietnam artciles, I find it hard to find acceptable references for all the translated versions. Mots of them have been taken from Travel sites and are rejected when I use them with references. May be we can do better without the traslated versions. I find each article is to be expanded to atleast about 30,000 ch. I have so far done five of them. It may take many more days to complete. You have to take a view about the translated version. I will be back in India on the 28th of this month. -- N.V.V. Char Talk . 21:21, 16 July 2010 (UTC)

[edit]

Thanks for the welcome note. Glad to hear you are well and continuing busy on the WP, and am really happy to see you getting so much well-deserved credit for all your excellent work. We are in the throes of packing, getting vaccinations, etc., etc. Jo had a huge party for her 70th birthday the night before last. It was heartening to realise we have so many close and wonderful friends here. We will miss them while we are away. We leave here on 4th August and expect to return about the middle of November. I will be doing my very best to collect as many photos and interesting info for articles as I can. I expect to have internet contact from time to time - but there could be weeks when we are out of touch (there are not many wi-fi or internet facilities in the middle of the Himalayas other than at a few of the major towns). I already have Takthok high on my list of places to photograph for you. But do not hestitate to write if anything comes up or you need help or support and I will get back to you as quickly as I can. All best wishes, John Hill (talk) 10:15, 19 July 2010 (UTC)

Flag of Zabaykalsky Krai

[edit]

I added a bit to the article, as well as added a source. The Chita reference is due to the fact that Zabaykalsky Krai is the successor of Chita Oblast and Agin-Buryat Autonomous Okrug, which merged in 2008. The flag of Zabaykalsky Krai is identical to the flag of Chita Oblast.—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); July 19, 2010; 16:29 (UTC)

Torrent (1926 film)

[edit]

Hi Blofeld. Thanks for your contributions on several articles related to Greta Garbo. In Torrent (1926 film)#Overview the use of actor names referring to the characters should be avoided. According to all biographers Cortez and Garbo did not get along very well making a statement "Cortez' love for Garbo is genuine ..." misleading. Apart from that I hardly find it encyclopedic to write "The director's mischievous nature shows again (...)". Would you care to clean up the section and rewrite according to WP:PSTS? Cheers, MarB4 (talk) 16:56, 19 July 2010 (UTC)

Funny how a newbie feels compelled to tell me what is encyclopedic. If you don't "find it encyclopedic", clean it up yourself, that's what your editing tools are for. Compared to the effort it took to write the article the effort required is minimal. You route out what you think the problem is and rewrite it in a manner you think appropriate. This is why people are permitted to edit and not expect one person to do all of the work on an article written in the wiki Roman ages. You clearly know more about WP:PSTS than I do so you do it... Dr. Blofeld White cat 17:06, 19 July 2010 (UTC)

I thought it correct to ask you if you wanted to rewrite a section in an article you obviously have put efforts in, but I have read your answer and will act accordingly. MarB4 (talk) 17:47, 19 July 2010 (UTC)

Thankyou. I look forward to seeing the issues fixed and if possible that the article be expanded and better referenced. Dr. Blofeld White cat 18:14, 19 July 2010 (UTC)

Done it myself. Dr. Blofeld White cat 18:17, 19 July 2010 (UTC)

Hi. I sent MarB4 here to have a talk with you; it's on my talk. I encountered them on Greta Garbo where they added a lot of well-sourced stuff. This all doesn't look to have gone so well, but the page is better, right? mellow, ok? Cheers, Jack Merridew 22:12, 20 July 2010 (UTC)

I don't really know why either you or Mar needed to inform me. You see a problem, you fix it. Plain and simple! Dr. Blofeld White cat 09:43, 21 July 2010 (UTC)

Great work! I'll start working on them and they can easily go to DYK, which we could share. --Sulmues (talk) 12:27, 22 July 2010 (UTC)

I should thank you! I will also inform user:ZjarriRrethues and other members of WikiProject Albania to work at one article at a time and get co-DYKs with you for most of the articles. We have done 30 DYKs in the last 3 months (between Zjarri and I: He has done way more than me), and we have as objective of bringing WP Albania to 50 DYKs shortly. --Sulmues (talk) 14:37, 22 July 2010 (UTC)

Sorry - I'm actually out of the office today. Had some errands to run and a doctor's visit to attend to, so I've been in and out all day.

I'll dig around a bit and see what I can come up with, but it'll be hard; there's not a lot online at the moment. Though I did tweak the wording about the lighthouse a little. And I have a picture, which I'll have to dig up - I was on the Great Wicomico in June. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 20:15, 22 July 2010 (UTC)

Blof there's a user, Incognito222 (talk · contribs) who back in time kept removing the words Muslim and Islam from actor articles, such as Shahrukh Khan, Aamir Khan, Saif Ali Khan. He just kept deleting the fact that they're Muslim. A few days back he removed a great deal of info from Saif Ali Khan's article. I restored it now with sources, but he keeps removing substantial info such as the fact that his mother had converted to Islam and a quote of his in which he says that religion is very important to him.
There was a claim on the Aishwarya Rai article in which she accuses Salman's Khan for hitting and abusing her. The user removed the claim that Khan denied this. I cited a TOI source in which Khan clearly denies this and the guy keeps trying to reword it to show Salman Khan in a bad light.
I warned the user but he keeps at the same. Could you please talk to him? ShahidTalk2me 18:35, 25 July 2010 (UTC)

Wow! Nice work. That article was a mess, which I found especially sad considering the subject. --Ronz (talk) 00:25, 25 July 2010 (UTC)

Hello. In January you added a citation to a book from the "Webster's Quotations, Facts and Phrases" series published by Icon Group International to this article. Unfortunately, Icon Group International is not a reliable source - their books are computer-generated, with most of the text copied from Wikipedia (most entries have [WP] by them to indicate this, see e.g. [6]). I've only removed the reference, not the text it was referencing. I'm removing a lot of similar references as they are circular references; many other editors have also been duped by these sources. Despite giving an appearance of reliability, the name "Webster's" has been public domain since the late 19th century. Another publisher to be wary of as they reuse Wikipedia articles is Alphascript Publishing. Fences&Windows 14:56, 25 July 2010 (UTC)

Better to replace it than readd the BLP tag!... Perhaps it would be better to blacklist that book then?? Dr. Blofeld White cat 16:18, 25 July 2010 (UTC)

It can't be blacklisted by URL as it's Google Books... I've noted my 'crusade' against this source on the RSN and asked if an edit filter is possible. You're right, adding another source would be good, but I'm getting towards the end of clearing out over 100 uses of these 'books' - once I'm done I plan to go back through and help source them at my leisure, but remember that by removing these sources I'm not actually reducing the reliable sourcing at all. Bobby Deol also had a reference to one of these books. Fences&Windows 20:47, 25 July 2010 (UTC)

Aishwarya Rai + Saif Ali Khan

[edit]

Hi Dr. Blofeld, I understand that Shahid has voiced his opinion of me to you. Let me firstly apologize for any wrongdoings on my part. I removed religious affiliations from articles on wikipedia because they were unsourced firstly. I've never removed an affiliation if it was sourced. Secondly, I urge you to see this: This is my edit and I clarified in edit information that this was a cbs 60 minutes news source: http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Aishwarya_Rai&oldid=372150742#Personal_life

And look at what shahid did after: http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Aishwarya_Rai&oldid=374246877#Personal_life

His reason for the edit was 'No source directly supports it.' My source concretely supported my evidence. It seems that shahid has a personal prejudice towards Hindu claims. He very blatantly removed a claim with one of the strongest sources you'll see around. Why? In addition, when I remove any claims about an individual being muslim with weak or no sources at all, he aggressively reverts it and argues.

My sole goal is to keep information as accurate as possible. I have no prejudice towards any religion. In fact, I've added Christian and Zoroastrian affiliation information on individuals before. Incognito222 (talk) 19:08, 25 July 2010 (UTC)

Hello Dr. Blofeld,
I see that you have no replied to my message on your board. I don't know why you haven't replied, but I am sad that you chose not to. I request of you to please just acknowledge that you understand what shahid did on Aishwarya Rai's page was not in good faith. And since you are an experienced and have authority, I also feel that it is ethical that you should reprimand him for that behavior.
Just look at line 81 in this. Look at the claim he deleted for having no reliable source even though it was a cbs news 60 minutes article that has what the claim he deleted almost word for word in it! http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Aishwarya_Rai&action=historysubmit&diff=374246877&oldid=372150742
Thank you Dr. Blofeld. Incognito222 (talk) 19:45, 27 July 2010 (UTC)

When you stop reverting the edits of people like BOLLYWOODDREAMZ who have practically written the entire articles and start discussing why you think it is really necessary to assert religious/ethnic affiliation without embarrassing yourself in edit wars I'll start talking to you. There are far more important things to deal with on here. I despair at the way editors such as yourself feel it necessary to persist with these minor edits when we have several thousands sub standard Indian film articles and very few quality articles on here. Your time would be better spent improving our stubs and poorly developed Indian film articles. For instance if i asked you to write several length paragraphs about Dharmendras career which is completely missing would you be so persistent? Do you realise just how many people are Hindu in India? Why is it necessary to state this in every article? Dr. Blofeld White cat 20:07, 27 July 2010 (UTC)

Dr. Blofeld, it is not within my interest to expand upon dharmendra's career or write articles on some mediocre films. However, when many non-Indian people came to me and said that they thought katrina kaif was pakistani muslim because it said so on wikipedia, I decided to take a personal interest in keeping ethnic and religious information on here as accurate as i can. Apparently it is something many people give value to when they read articles of people on the internet and katrina kaif isn't the only person who someone had misinformation about because of wikipedia.
Having authority on wikipedia, I and others expect that you be as neutral and fair as possible when dealing with anything or anybody. Regardless of shahid's or bollywooddream's opinion of me and regardless of how many times i've reversed edited, i expect you to look upon my edits with neutrality however frivolous they may seem to you. This is why I expect you to talk to me, because you are in a position of responsibility, and I and others respect this.
Another thing, I try to stay within the rules of wikipedia when adding anything or removing anything. The editwars i've had have been very reasonable and I've been correct in most cases!
I really do honestly feel that ranbir kapoor's and kareena's early life sections should indicate their ethnic and religious background. Every other actor has it cited, it's very reasonable that ranbir and kareena do too. And I will try to add it in in alliance of wikipedia's rules.
I'm grateful that you replied doc, and I'm sorry for any resentment I've caused.

Tirana Park on the Artificial Lake. Technically it passes DYK, but I would love if you could work your magic and have it co-nominated like we have done in past: the collaboration is always better than working by myself. --Sulmues (talk) 17:46, 26 July 2010 (UTC)

That's fine Dr. Blofeld and many thanks for the enormous help provided so far! Unfortunately we're kind of a "lazy" WP: only 3-4 active people. Unfortunately there are some ill feelings with other editors and some of us spend too much time running after correcting other people's work, rather than focusing on more neutral, yet much more important articles such as the ones to show their present-day country to the world. In my opinion fighting whether a city in the antiquity was Illyrian or Greek is not as important as showing the best face of your country now, but, hey, that's what people want, and who am I to blame them? Thanks again, and I'll see you around. --Sulmues (talk) 13:42, 29 July 2010 (UTC)

Varga Árpád

[edit]

Do you do much work on Hungarian articles and can you speak the language? Varga Árpád is listed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Varga Árpád. He is a gamer and seems to have some notable achievements such as winning a Quake tournament, placing highly in several others and becoming one of SKZI Gaming's team members. I saw your name on the Hungary Wikiproject as I am about to see if it has a deletion sort tag that can be placed on the AfD. ----moreno oso (talk) 04:42, 30 July 2010 (UTC)

Looks like I was four minutes too late to vote Keep via WP:IAR. I posted my thoughts on the closing admin's talkpage but I doubt I will make a difference. Here is what I was going to write in the AfD, which I got an edit conflict for as it was closed:
  • Comment - No assertion of notability? His article states, "Next year he won the Pazmand Quake competition, considered as an underdog. If I do the math right, that would be approximately in 2005. It also states, "In 2009 he switched to the newest version of the Quake series, called QuakeLive. Varga became an ESL Major Series Player, and finished 4th, in the 5th season." He gets plenty of ghits but I don't speak Hungarian otherwise, I'd try to save this article. ----moreno oso (talk) 05:01, 30 July 2010 (UTC)
  • Keep - per WP:IAR and the assertions of notability in the article (cf above). ----moreno oso (talk) 05:01, 30 July 2010 (UTC)
Good news. The admin, User:Jujutacular relisted the AfD on the basis of the above comments. I sure hope you can save this one. ----moreno oso (talk) 05:19, 30 July 2010 (UTC)

Normally i'd be happy to expand an article but I have little time for people who play video games, sorry... If they got a real profession I'd try to expand it. Dr. Blofeld White cat 08:27, 30 July 2010 (UTC)

Yeah, thanks for all your consideration. ----moreno oso (talk) 12:59, 30 July 2010 (UTC)
BTW, what would you think about Eric Calouro? ----moreno oso (talk) 16:18, 30 July 2010 (UTC)

Understand this amigo. COI is one of my pet hates on wikipedia. I couldn't give a monkeys about video gamers and self promotional kids. For some reason you've got the impression I'm happy for wikipedia to include anything. Dr. Blofeld - 15:36, 18 July 2010 (UTC) 08:27, 31 July 2010 (UTC)

One comment. The same effect give Template:Location map Russia with parameter |relief=1. I do not now, if this parameter is supported by other templates {{Infobox mountain}}, {{Infobox mountain/map}}.--Амба (talk) 01:09, 31 July 2010 (UTC)

I reverted the user who added an unjustified tag on the article, but was reverted back. I posted a message on the talk page, and warned the user - his next revert will lead to his block in accordance with WP:EW. ShahidTalk2me 12:04, 31 July 2010 (UTC)

Translation

[edit]

I heard about that project back when it was first announced; the very idea is fascinating to me. I'm happy to see that there's some movement being made in the arena of transwiki-ing and translating international content. Especially out of English, not to say into English; I'm sure there's a lot here that can be easily translated into other languages.

Besides which, I have the decided impression that machine translation services are getting better. I still don't use Babelfish that much, but on the occasions I have I've been quite impressed with the readability of the result I get. I don't think machine translation will ever replace manual translation, but if it comes close that might be better than I ever hoped for. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 23:08, 31 July 2010 (UTC)
