This is an essay. It contains the advice or opinions of one or more Wikipedia contributors. This page is not an encyclopedia article, nor is it one of Wikipedia's policies or guidelines, as it has not been thoroughly vetted by the community. Some essays represent widespread norms; others only represent minority viewpoints. |
This page in a nutshell: WP:NOTCENSORED is not itself a sufficient argument for the inclusion of material. |
While it is true that Wikipedia is not censored, this policy is often misused as an argument for the inclusion of content.
WP:NOTCENSORED should not be used to:
- Include material that violates Wikipedia policies such as the WP:Neutral point of view, WP:Verifiablity, WP:Biographies of living persons policies.
- Override arguments about WP:Notability in deletion discussions
- Use offensive or vulgar language in Wikipedia's voice (outside of direct quotations)
- Use potentially offensive images in articles where the use of a less-offensive image would be equally useful. (See WP:GRATUITOUS) In all cases, images should be directly relevant to the subject of the article.[note 1]
- Include material in an article where it has little encyclopedic value.

Notes
[edit]- ^ For example, pictures of naked people and depictions of Muhammad are appropriate for articles about anatomy and Muhammad respectively, but it would not be appropriate to use a picture of a naked lady posing with a car to illustrate Automobile, nor would it be appropriate to add pictures of Muhammad where they don't have relevance or encyclopedic value.
