This is an essay. It contains the advice or opinions of one or more Wikipedia contributors. This page is not an encyclopedia article, nor is it one of Wikipedia's policies or guidelines, as it has not been thoroughly vetted by the community. Some essays represent widespread norms; others only represent minority viewpoints. |
This page in a nutshell: Adding a tag to an article without starting a discussion on its talk page is sometimes helpful but often not. |
A work in progress, see its talk page
Often, tags such as citation needed or dubious are added to an article text, or ones such as advert to its header, with no explanation in the article talk page.
This is sometimes constructive, in that other editors pick up and resolve these issues.
But often, these tags just sit there for years with no action taken. As these tags represent no more than one editor's opinion, and are themselves completely unsourced, it's debatable whether they do more harm than good.
